Errol Spence Jr. stops Yordenis Ugas in 10th to unify titles, calls for Terence Crawford next

ARLINGTON, Texas — Errol Spence Jr. was dazed as he peered around the ring looking for his mouthpiece.

Yordenis Ugas sent it flying on Saturday after he connected with a brutal right hand in Round 6, before referee Laurence Cole slowly moved to halt the action to allow Spence to retrieve it. That’s when Ugas connected with a left hand followed by a right that sent the distracted Spence careening into the ropes for what could have been called a knockdown.

The series of events seemed to only reinvigorate Spence, who was fighting in front of his hometown fans at AT&T Stadium for the third time in four fights. He began to attack far more aggressively during the following round and took control of the bout after he buckled Ugas with a left uppercut. The systematic beating he dispensed on Ugas slowly but surely closed the Cuban boxer’s right eye before the ringside doctor advised Cole to stop the fight at 1:44 of Round 10.

Ugas (27-5, 22 KOs) was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, to have his right eye examined. Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) was ahead on all three scorecards at the time of the stoppage: 88-82, 88-83 and 88-82. Two judges scored the eighth round 10-8 for Spence.

With the victory, Spence added Ugas’ WBA welterweight title along with the WBC and IBF titles he already owned. Now, Spence only needs Terence Crawford’s WBO title to become undisputed 147-pound champion.

“Everybody knows who I want next; I want Terence Crawford next,” said Spence, ESPN’s No. 6 pound-for-pound boxer. “That’s the fight that I want; that’s the fight everybody else wants. Terence, I’m coming for that motherf—ing belt.”

For years, Spence and Crawford have circled each other but never come close to finalizing a deal for what has long been one of boxing’s biggest potential bouts. Crawford’s win over Shawn Porter in November was the final bout of his long-term deal with Top Rank, a promotional company that rarely does business with PBC, which promotes Spence’s fights.

Now that Crawford is a promotional free agent, the greatest roadblock to the matchup has been removed, and it appears to be a genuine possibility later this year.

“Congratulations, great fight, now the real fight happens,” Crawford tweeted at Spence. “No more talk, no more side of the street, let’s go!”

The superfight with Crawford appeared to be slipping through Spence’s grasp midway through the bout. Ugas, 35, continued to unload on Spence in Round 6 after he was sent crashing into the ropes as the favorite absorbed the punishment. Cole finally paused the bout this time, even though there wasn’t a lull in the action. The delay appeared to allow Spence, 32, to recover; he began firing punches at Ugas after the bout resumed.

“I thought the ref said ‘stop,’ so I stopped,” said Spence, who scored his first stoppage of a champion since he won the IBF title from Kell Brook in May 2017. “And then he hit me with three or four shots. That’s my fault. That was a rookie mistake. You’re supposed to protect yourself at all times, and I didn’t do that. I wasn’t out on my feet. I turned and looked at my mouthpiece and he hit me.”

The sixth round was Ugas’ last stand. Spence, who mostly boxed off the back foot during the first half of the bout, now attacked with relentless pressure. The adjustment made all the difference. ESPN’s No. 2 welterweight targeted Ugas’ midsection, and it paid off as his activity dipped.

Of the 216 punches Spence landed, 70 were to the body, according to CompuBox. Spence threw a fight-high 110 punches in a fiery Round 8 and connected on 46.

Ugas battled it out with Spence on the inside, but his right eye continued to swell to the point he couldn’t see. He was hurt again in Round 8 following a series of shots before Cole paused the bout to allow the doctor to examine Ugas. After nearly a minute, the action resumed. This time, Ugas received the reprieve.

“I feel sad; I trained really hard for this fight,” Ugas, ESPN’s No. 3 welterweight, said through a translator. “All my respect to Errol Spence. He’s a great champion. … The referee stopped the fight, but I wanted to keep going to the end. I definitely had a chance to win the fight in the sixth round, but he recuperated well.”

In a twist, it was Spence’s left eye that led to this matchup in the first place. The 32-year-old was set to meet the legendary Manny Pacquiao in August, but Spence withdrew from the fight after a doctor diagnosed him with a detached retina.

Spence quickly underwent surgery as Ugas stepped in on 11 days’ notice for the life-changing opportunity. Ugas was already a champion and had dropped a controversial decision to Porter in a title bout earlier in his career, but this was a chance to establish himself as one of boxing’s elite.

Ugas rose to the occasion with a dominant decision victory in an upset and sent Pacquiao into retirement. Spence’s passing-of-the-torch fight disappeared like a puff of smoke, but another opportunity presented itself.

After he quickly recovered from the surgery, Spence passed up the routine tuneup bout and headed straight into the title unification with Ugas. The bout was Spence’s fourth consecutive on pay-per-view and third at the home of the Dallas Cowboys in his past four fights (announced attendance of 39,946).

“I didn’t have any doubts at all. I believe in myself 100%,” Spence said. ” … I didn’t want a tuneup fight or to fight somebody I know I can beat. I wanted somebody who was going to bring the best out of me and I knew Ugas was going to bring the best out of me.”

Once again, Spence proved following serious injury that he remains one of the top fighters in all of boxing. After he defeated Porter in one of 2019’s best action fights, he was involved in a devastating single-car crash one month later in October.

Following the loss of several teeth and a hospital stay, Spence returned in December 2020 with a decision victory over Danny Garcia to retain his titles. And now, he has scored yet another impressive victory over one of the best welterweights in the world in his first fight back from eye surgery.

All that remains for Spence in the welterweight division, of course, is a long-awaited meeting with Crawford.

Errol Spence Jr. vs. Yordenis Ugas fight results, highlights: ‘The Truth’ unifies titles with 10th-round TKO

ARLINGTON, Texas — In his return from a 14-month layoff and surgery on a detached retina, unified champion Errol Spence Jr. made quite the statement in Saturday’s homecoming about where he stands in the welterweight division.

Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) extended his control as the power player at 147 pounds by unifying his WBC and IBF titles with the WBA belt from Yordenis Ugas (27-5, 12 KOs) in a thrilling 10th-round TKO of his game opponent inside an electric AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

A native of nearby Desoto, the 32-year-old Spence traded huge shots throughout at close range as he looked to make a statement against the brave Ugas, who wobbled Spence in Round 6 with a flurry of shots that knocked out his mouthpiece. To Spence’s credit, he never went down and he went on to swell the right eye of Ugas shut, forcing referee Laurence Cole to stop the fight at 1:44 of Round 10 on the advice of the ringside doctor.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Yordenis Ugas fight results, highlights: Cuban champ upsets Filipino legend to retain title

Two years removed from his last fight, Manny Pacquiao looked all 42 years of his age on Saturday. Now, the living legend must decide whether his boxing future is behind him.

Yordenis Ugas (27-4, 12 KOs), who took the fight on just 11 days’ notice after unified champion Errol Spence Jr. withdrew, relied on defense and hard counterpunching to defend his WBA welterweight title and disappoint the pro-Pacquiao crowd inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

A former Olympic bronze medalist from Cuba, Ugas outlanded Pacquiao by a margin of 101 to 88, according to CompuBox, and landed an incredible 59% of his power shots en route to a unanimous decision (115-113, 116-112, 116-112). CBS Sports also scored it for Ugas, 116-112.

The defeat left Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) unsure about his fighting future as rumors continue to swirl that the Filipino Senator will make a run at the presidency in 2022 for his native country.

“I’m sorry that we lost tonight, but I did my best,” Pacquiao said. “I don’t know, I don’t know. Let me rest first and relax [before] I make the decision of whether I will fight or not.

“I will make a final announcement [about running for president] next month. I know that I am facing a big problem that’s more difficult than boxing but I want to help the people. I want to help them.”

Ugas, 35, turned out to be a problem Pacquiao had trouble solving, particularly over the second half of the fight. Fighting behind his high guard, he was defensively responsible enough to prevent Pacquiao from overwhelming him with flashy combinations while slick enough to counter clean with right hands.

More importantly, Ugas was creative and the frustration began to show for Pacquiao, boxing’s only eight-division champion, who had trouble picking up Ugas’ sidearm body shots and looping right hands, which left the “PacMan” with a cut above his left eye and significant swelling below his right by the end of Round 12.

Ugas made the first defense of the title he was upgraded to as full champion during Pacquiao’s 25-month layoff. Pacquiao had captured the WBA title in 2019 by outpointing Keith Thurman while Ugas originally held the interim belt.

“I’m very excited but most of all, I want to thank Manny Pacquiao for giving me this moment in the ring today,” Ugas said. “I told you that I’m the only champion of the WBA. He’s a great competitor and I have a lot of respect for him but I won the fight.

“The double jab was the lead punch. We only had two weeks of training but I listened to my corner and it all worked out.”

Ugas made adjustments throughout to offset the speed advantage of Pacquiao. The living legend blamed the lack of time to prepare for the fight as the reason for his loss after Spence pulled out, needing surgery for a torn retina suffered in training camp.

“I had to make an adjustment for [only] a few days. It’s good but that’s boxing,” Pacquiao said. “I know I was having a hard time in the ring making adjustments about his style. That was a problem for me because I didn’t make an adjustment right away and my legs were tight. It was hard to move.”

Pacquiao did a good job staying with Ugas in the first half by covering up the difficulties he was having with activity. But his output lowered the more frustrated he got as Ugas dared to play chess with the future Hall of Famer while standing right in front of him at close range.

“Now the plan is to unify the title at welterweight,” Ugas said. “Everybody said he’s the champion but now they know who the real champion is.”

Manny Pacquiao vs. Yordenis Ugas fight results: Live boxing updates, scorecard, start time, undercard

The sport of boxing’s only eight-division champion returns from a two-year layoff on Saturday to headline yet another pay-per-view card.

Despite original foe, unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr., pulling out of the fight on less than two weeks’ notice, Manny Pacquiao is still expected to face a difficult challenge when the 42-year-old Filipino icon challenges for Yordenis Ugas’ WBA title inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao will be fighting for the title he won in his last fight when he dropped and outpointed then-unbeaten Keith Thurman in 2019. Ugas, a native of Cuba, moved up from the undercard where he was originally scheduled to defend his title against Fabian Maidana.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Yordenis Ugas fight start time: Live stream, PPV price, TV channel, how to watch

Legendary boxer Manny Pacquiao is ready to make his return to the ring. After nearly two full years away, “PacMan” is back in Las Vegas in the main event of a PBC on Fox PPV event to take on WBA titleholder Yordenis Ugas.

Pacquiao earned the WBA strap in last outing with a decision win over Keith Thurman in September 2019. But with the Filipino legend out of commission, the sanctioning body promoted him to “champion in recess” to open up the title once more to the rest of the division.

Ugas, meanwhile, is not someone who can be looked over. At 35, the Cuban has just one defeat in 12 trips to the ring since 2015 with the lone loss coming by disputed decision to Shawn Porter for the vacant WBC title. He’s taken on some of the best in the world at 147 pounds, including victories over Jamal James, Thomas Dulorme, Ray Robinson, Omar Figueroa Jr. and Abel Ramos.

It’s sure to be a busy night as a WBA champion is crowned with the hopes of one day unifying with either Spence or WBO champion and pound-for-pound great Terence Crawford.

Three more bouts fill out the undercard in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Most notably, a pair of veterans meet in the co-main event when Robert Guerrero and Victor Ortiz meet at welterweight. Guerrero, 38, is back after his own two-year hiatus and enters on a three-fight win streak. This comes after a brief retirement in 2017 following a three-fight skid. Ortiz, 34, has not fought since February 2018 while facing sexual assault allegations that were dismissed in December 2020. He has not won since a July 2017 knockout. Plus, Filipino prospect Mark Magsayo gets his chance to move closer to gold when he takes on former champion Julio Ceja in a WBC title eliminator at featherweight.

Here’s how you can catch all the action in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Manny Pacquiao continues to defy Father Time as he enters another title bout against Yordenis Ugas

It was just over six years ago that defending welterweight champions Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao met in boxing’s biggest fight to date for the title of best fighter of their collective era.

Although the superfight came roughly five years too late following an extended soap opera of delays, it was still a matchup of the two best fighters, pound for pound at the time, on the planet. And given their respective ages — the unbeaten Mayweather was 38, Pacquiao was 36 — there was a historic element at play to the fight offering each the final chance to permanently define their legacies with a win.

Pacquiao, who partially blamed an injured shoulder, would go on to lose the fight by convincing decision and Mayweather, as expected, would retire for good four months later from the “traditional” portion of his fight career (despite a trio of comebacks best described as quasi, if not full-on, exhibitions). Pacquiao, however, never stopped fighting.

The interesting part about Pacquiao’s exceptional legacy is that even though he lost to Mayweather in a fight that for most would be the defining one of their career, the Filipino icon had already cemented his legacy, or so it seemed, back in 2010 when he became boxing’s only eight-division champion.

Few could’ve guessed Pacquiao would keep fighting at an elite level after 2015 given his age and style as a smaller fighter so reliant upon speed and explosiveness against bigger opponents. Even less could’ve predicted he would still be fighting today, headlining what was originally expected to be the biggest pay-per-view of the calendar year this weekend in Las Vegas.

Yet here we are, just days out from Pacquiao, at age 42, entering as the clear betting favorite following a two-year layoff when he challenges WBA welterweight titleholder Yordenis Ugas in Saturday’s main event (PBC on Fox PPV, 9 p.m. ET), after Ugas was a late replacement for unified 147-pound champion Errol Spence Jr., who withdrew with a torn retina just 11 days out.

Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39 KOs) was just 16 in 1995 when he made his pro debut at 106 pounds. An astonishing 26 years later, at an age when his contemporaries, if they are active at all, are typically cashing out by boxing MMA fighters and YouTube influencers, Pacquiao clearly isn’t done adding to his legacy.

While his immediate post-Mayweather victories over Timothy Bradley Jr. (in their trilogy) and Jessie Vargas were impressive, they did nothing to suggest what would come after. In a 12-month stretch beginning in July 2018, Pacquiao authored a trio of victories over Lucas Matthysse, Adrien Broner and then-unbeaten Keith Thurman. The surprising resurgence nearly won him fighter of the year honors at 40 and re-established him among the P4P best in the game.

So how did we get here, with Pacquiao having seemingly found the proverbial fountain of youth? Is it as simple as a living legend, who consistently matched himself as difficult as possible in an era where it’s not the norm, being the last of his breed as a veritable freak of nature?

“Yeah, a little bit,” trainer Freddie Roach told “Morning Kombat” last month. “His speed, his power and his work ethic are still great. He trains really hard every day and he has great footwork.”

Roach, the Hall of Fame mentor who has served as a father figure for Pacquiao since the fighter walked off the street into his Los Angeles gym a little more than 20 years ago, ultimately settled upon PacMan’s passion for the sport — which has yet to be extinguished despite his fame and success — as the secret to his longevity.

Pacquiao agreed, telling CBS Sports last week, “My secret is training and, of course, discipline. [But] I’m happy doing this for three decades and I’m still enjoying what I’m doing right now.”

Yet when it comes to the reputation he has developed as a fighter who is constantly looking to give back to his fans by not only fighting the best, but seeking out opponents with exciting styles to match his own, Pacquiao referred back to his love of what he does and the opportunity it gives him to inspire others as his main source of motivation. That’s why he sought out Spence in the first place and why he was equally willing to accept Ugas as a replacement on such short notice.

“I think that’s the evidence of being passionate for this sport because this is my passion,” Pacquiao said. “Not only is it to fight and making money, but giving inspiration to the boxing fans and giving encouragement to young fighters to work hard and have the determination for their dreams.”

Although Pacquiao has long been disciplined and a noted gym rat, Roach admitted his fighter got a wakeup call from his disputed 2017 loss to Jeff Horn when Pacquiao, who appeared to get old overnight in a damaging fight, arrived in Australia jet-lagged and somewhat undertrained while juggling duties as a senator in his native Philippines throughout a distracted training camp.

Pacquiao has made sure to do a better job balancing his civic duties since then although it can be argued his current ring return is politically motivated because of how much Pacquiao, whose history as a senator on human rights has often been criticized, might use the positive press of an emphatic victory at his age as a national hero to springboard a rumored run for president in 2022.

How Pacquiao’s political hopes might impact his fighting future remains uncertain. Roach believes Pacquiao’s final in-ring goal is to win the election and then win one more boxing match as the reigning Filipino president. Pacquiao was far more noncommittal when asked and insisted he remains on a fight-by-fight basis based upon how he performs and feels.

Either way, Pacquiao’s ageless ways and his charitable reputation have come full circle in the buildup to his boxing return as he has partnered with Takeover Industries to be the face of their NXT LVL Hydrogen Water campaign with Pacquiao’s image currently adorned to collectors series’ cans of the gas-infused spring water used for training and recovery.

Pacquiao has rarely been seen on camera in the pre-fight build without the product in his hand or the logo plastered on the gear of his team. And while it’s expected to be a financially rich partnership for both sides — Takeover CEO Toby McBride said the drink has done over $1 million in the first 120 days online before entering retail — Pacquiao has been much more focused on how he could use it to give back.

After initially being sent samples of the drink while training, Pacquiao loved its benefits so much he reached out to the company to offer a partnership in launching the product throughout southeast Asia. That led to an agreement in which the fighter’s charity, the Manny Pacquiao Foundation, signed on to receive a percentage of all NXT LVL sales to help the less fortunate.

“We are helping so many all over the world giving shelter and, of course, medical attention to so many,” Pacquiao said. “We have been building houses in Uganda [for example] and it’s good. It’s my heart and desire from the beginning that I want to help people, not only for my countrymen, but all over the world. I want to be an inspiration for everyone, as much as possible.”

McBride, who has a history in launching successful beverage brands like SoBe, Arizona Iced Tea and Xyience, said aligning the health and anti-aging benefits of his product with a reputation for longevity that Pacquiao possesses was a no-brainer.

“I have loved the guy since he started fighting. The fact that we can help his charity out kind of sealed it for me,” McBride said. “We can sell as much as we can and that will be great but if we can save lives and help people, I’ve done my job. He’s just an amazing man and that’s why I did the deal. Age is a number now. It’s how you feel and how you run your days and how you should run your life. That’s what our product is there for.”

Pacquiao’s history of defying Father Time makes for a great pre-fight narrative, but inevitably, rare is the boxer who isn’t the last to know they have lingered on for too long. How much of a role will the two-year layoff play in that potentially happening to Pacquiao against Ugas (26-4), a 35-year-old technician and decorated former Cuban amateur star who is big and durable for the weight class?

“In my situation, [the layoff] is good for me because I have been in boxing for almost 30 years,” Pacquiao said. “That’s non-stop so it’s better for me to have rest for two years. My body didn’t have time to rest [previously]. When I got back to training camp and fight mode, I’m so excited and happy. What I’m doing now, I feel like I’m young again. I’m always inspired to work hard like when I was young.”

Asked about the danger his opponent — originally Spence, and now Ugas — brings to the ring against him at this age, Pacquiao was quick to remind that at the elite level, the only danger is not being fully prepared — either spiritually or in the form of physical conditioning — which he promised would not be an issue.

Pacquiao is at an age where a deep retrospective of where he came from and what he has accomplished is natural. Could he have ever imagined as a poor child who once sold doughnuts and cigarettes on the streets of Manila to survive that he might one day be a candidate for president and a surefire Hall of Fame boxer who is still going strong at an age when most have walked away for good?

The answer was an easy one.

“Where I came from, I can’t imagine from the beginning that I would have accomplished all these things,” Pacquiao said. “I always believed I have been brought from nothing into something to help people and be an inspiration to everyone.

“As long as God give me the strength and good health and always protect me, I can still fight. But right now it’s one at a time. I can’t talk about what’s next until I focus on this one first. After that, discuss and talk about the future.”
