Is this common pain medication wrecking your stomach?

As far as medical emergencies go, this one was at least pretty straightforward. On a cloudless early recent morning, I found myself careering toward the hospital in an Uber, my 18-year-old daughter sobbing beside me and puking into a plastic bag. Three days earlier, she’d had surgery to remove her wisdom teeth. Now, her insides were staging a violent rebellion. The source of her pain? Her pain reliever itself, in the form of a bottle of prescription strength ibuprofen.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most commonly used medications in the world. They alleviate pain by blocking the production of the enzyme cyclooxygenase. That process in turn inhibits the production of prostaglandins, which leads to less swelling and inflammation. You probably have several over-the-counter and prescription NSAID varieties in your medicine cabinet right now — aspirin, ibuprofen, Naproxen, Celecoxib. They’re what you reach for when the menstrual cramps kick in, you overdo it at the gym, your arthritis or back pain flare up. Writing for Harvard Health in 2020, Robert H. Shmerling, MD, reported that roughly “15% of the US population takes an NSAID regularly (including those that are over the counter and prescription strength),” and that, along with “sporadic users,” adds up to “more than 30 billion doses … taken each year.”

Most of the time, taking NSAIDs is a good thing. Appropriate medication means not missing days of work or school. It means being able to participate in cherished activities. There’s even now a growing body of research into the use of NSAIDs in patients to help combat the opioid epidemic. With one-fifth of us living with chronic pain, managing it effectively is a serious issue — and a basic right.

But NSAIDs can be hard on your stomach — harder than you may ever have bargained for. Speaking to Mayo Clinic News Network in 2018, family physician Dr. Summer Allen noted that “one of our greatest concerns with NSAIDs for patients is the fact that it can lead to bleeding in their GI, or stomach lining or tract.” That can be particularly risky for people using them regularly or long-term. The Canadian Society of Intestinal Research estimates that “15–30% of long-term NSAID users are at risk of developing ulcer disease, with 2–4% of these ulcers leading to complications.”

Where things get even trickier — like, sitting on a stretcher hooked up to an IV drip for 12 hours-level tricky — is in the ever widening realm of adverse drug interactions, comorbidities and overprescription. Consumer Reports notes that “More than half of us now regularly take a prescription medication — four, on average.” And they don’t all play well together.

Are you among the approximately 20 million Americans on antidepressants? A 2021 study out of Creighton University School of Medicine found that for patients already on NSAIDs, adding SSRIs meant “the odds of developing an upper gastrointestinal bleed increased by 75%.”

Are you on blood-thinning medicines, ACE inhibitors, beta blockers or other NSAIDs? All of those combinations can cause stomach irritation or other side effects.

Do you have Crohn’s disease? NSAIDs can make your symptoms feel worse.

Are you over 65? More than a decade ago, research in the journal of the American Medical Directors Association warned that chronic NSAID use “increases the risk of peptic ulcer disease, acute renal failure, and stroke/myocardial infarction” in the elderly.

By the time we heard the word “gastritis,” she’d been in the hospital for half a day.

But even for the otherwise perfectly healthy, there are important considerations to understand before taking NSAIDs. A 2016 report in the British Journal of General Practice warns, “From the first day of use, all NSAIDs increase the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, myocardial infarction, and stroke.” And in yet another example of the boomerang effect, research out of Canada released just last month suggests that taking “drugs like ibuprofen and steroids to relieve short-term health problems could increase the chances of developing chronic pain.”

My daughter was, at the time of her oral surgery, already on two prescription medications, including the NSAID Naproxen. After her procedure, she came home with two more prescriptions — one for ibuprofen and one for antibiotics (which can also lead to stomach problems including diarrhea, cramping, and even in some cases C. Diff infections). In retrospect, it’s lucky she didn’t have a worse reaction to everything than she did.

Her symptoms did not, at first, seem like they were NSAID-related. They didn’t even seem of a digestive system nature at all. Her initial complaint was intense back pain, followed soon after by stomach pain. By the time it moved down to her abdomen, she was vomiting. By the time we heard the word “gastritis,” she’d been in the hospital for half a day.

My daughter’s experience was far from unusual, even within my own family. Three years ago, while my older daughter was on medication and recovering from an autoimmune issue, she acquired a brand new gastroenterologist for all the NSAID side effects she developed in the bargain. The American Journal of Medical Care estimates that “11% of preventable drug-related hospital admissions could be attributed to NSAIDs,” noting that some figures put the annual number at “more than 100,000 patients hospitalized for NSAID-related GI complications alone.”

So what can you do to end the cycle of pill popping and stomach aching? First of all, weigh the risks and rewards. Talk to your doctor about all the medications you take, including over the counter ones, before any new procedure or prescription. When you have an ache, don’t go with a “more is more” attitude and exceed the recommended dosage. A 2018 study out of Boston University found that about “15 percent of adults taking ibuprofen or other NSAIDs exceeded the maximum recommended daily dose for these drugs… increasing their risk of serious side effects like internal bleeding and heart attacks.” Take your NSAIDs with food, and avoid irritants like alcohol. And don’t hesitate to consult with your doctor or go to the hospital if you are experiencing serious and persistent symptoms. 

“The best way to prevent complications from NSAID use is to speak to a medical professional. If you are experiencing pain beyond three days you should have an exam and be evaluated to see what the underlying cause of pain is,” said Ashley Allen of Allen Health & Wellness, a nurse practitioner specializing  in pain management. “Many times there are other, more appropriate, medications that can be given to treat a condition. For instance, if someone has a sinus headache, it may be best that they are treated with antibiotics for an infection or an antihistamine to decrease swelling, not a NSAID. For some individuals, it may be appropriate to also take a proton pump inhibitor like Prilosec (omeprazole) to help protect the stomach lining from damage.”

My daughter is fortunate. She’s young and strong; she’s bounced back from the oral surgery itself just fine. In her surprise detour to the hospital, she received excellent and thorough care that didn’t detect any other underlying conditions. But her insides are still recovering from the flamethrower effects of her recent experience, and her doctor has put her on a bland diet of small meals for two months. It is not a small thing to be actively fending off pain for such a long time.

And it’s a chronic problem for a whole lot of us, casually swallowing our way through bottle after bottle of ibuprofen, chased soon after by bottle after inevitable bottle of Pepto Bismol. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that a Consumer Healthcare Protection Association list of the top selling over the counter drugs in America places oral analgesics high on the list — with heartburn remedies coming in strong right behind them.

Tesla catches fire in Sacramento wrecking yard three weeks after accident

Sacramento Metro Fire put out their first Tesla fire last week. Firefighters extinguished the flames engulfing a Tesla Model S that had been sitting in a Sacramento wrecking yard for three weeks after an accident. 

“This was the 1st and only. The vehicle sat parked in a wrecking yard for 3 wks after a vehicle accident (not involving fire), and then caught fire in the yard. Our crews were dispatched and ensured the vehicle was extinguished after well over an hour of firefighting operations,” stated Metro Fire of Sacramento.

According to Metro Fire, the Tesla Model S fire started in the vehicle’s battery compartment. Firefighters had difficulty extinguishing the flames because the cells in the battery compartment would reignite. Metro Fire and workers from the wrecking year turned the Model S on its side to expose the battery compartment and get to the root of the flames. 

However, the battery cells continued to reignite even after firefighters sprayed water onto the battery compartment directly. Then, the firefighters decided to fully submerge the Model S vehicle’s battery compartment in water. They dug a small pit, filled it with water, and then placed the Tesla inside. The water pit successfully extinguished the fire. 

No injuries were reported during the Tesla Model S fire incident. 

A 2021 Tesla Model Y was engulfed in flames in Vancouver last month. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reached out to Tesla and asked for information on the Model Y incident in Canada.

In its 2021 Impact Report, Tesla stated that fire incidents for its vehicles were ~11x lower than the average vehicle in the United States. The report said that approximately five Tesla vehicle fires occurred for every billion miles traveled between 2012 and 2021.

10 Ways You’re Wrecking Your Belly Fat Loss Goals, Say Dietitians — Eat This Not That

Losing belly fat is such a frustrating goal for so many people because it can be difficult to pinpoint a specific food or behavior that’s the root cause of weight gain. There are many, many ways we can sabotage our efforts to eat healthily and lose weight. After all, food is everywhere we turn today, and the greatest volume of options seem to be those high in calories and in enticing flavors that keep us eating more and more.

That’s why dietitians are so adamant about practicing mindful eating. It’s that awareness of the temptations and our responses to them (the munching without thinking) that can give us the greatest control over what and how much we consume. We’ve been indoctrinated into thinking that eating as little as possible is the most effective way to lose weight when that approach often backfires.

“Not only can this lead to increased cravings and potentially feeling more out of control around food, but entering the starvation zone can slow down your metabolism through adaptive thermogenesis,” says medical board member Lisa Moskovitz, RD, a registered dietitian with the NY Nutrition Group and author of The Core 3 Healthy Eating Plan.

Your body needs a certain number of calories and nutrients to function properly. Threatening that basic need can cause your body “to hold onto fat cells and send your body into a protective, premature plateau instead of burning body fat,” she says.

If you’re not eating foods in their whole, natural form regularly, you are likely eating too many overly processed, empty-calorie foods like cakes, cookies, and the like that can sabotage your weight loss efforts.

“Processed foods tend to be high in calories, saturated fat and added sugar and low in nutrients your body needs to stay healthy,” says medical expert Toby Amidor, MS, RD, CND, author of the best-selling Diabetes Create Your Plate Meal Prep Cookbook. “There’s no need to stay completely away from these foods but try to fill up on wholesome foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, lean protein, low/nonfat milk and dairy, and healthy fats first and then if you are craving sweets, make it a small portion.”

Leafy greens are powerhouse weight-loss foods. Why? They deliver mostly water and healthy nutrients for very few calories.

“Fresh leafy greens from spinach to kale to romaine lettuce take up a significant volume on our plate and help ‘trick’ us into feeling more satiated,” says medical board member Molly Hembree, MS, RD, LD. “Leafy greens provide only about 5-10 calories per cup, and this barely makes a dent in our calorie needs for a meal or snack. They also provide fiber, vitamins A and C, folate, and other beneficial compounds to help control our health and body weight.”

You can turn a healthful, fresh vegetable salad into a total calorie bomb and not even realize it by pouring on heavy salad dressings, warn medical experts Tammy Lakatos Shames, RDN, CDN, CFT, and Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT, also known as The Nutrition Twins. Creamy dressings like ranch and Caesar can pack about 12 grams of fat and more than 140 calories in a two-tablespoon serving (and most people use more).

“Instead of calorie-dense oils and fatty dressings, use lemon; spritz it on salads, vegetables, fish, chicken, rice dishes, and more,” they say. “It’s a flavor-enhancing trick used by top chefs to build a lot of flavor while keeping meals light.”

Research suggests lemon’s polyphenol antioxidants may help to suppress body weight and body fat accumulation.

“Fiber helps keep us full and break the cycle of overeating that may lend to excess calorie consumption and weight gain,” says Hembree.

But bland oatmeal isn’t your only option.

“Berries, ideally blackberries or raspberries, have a high-fiber content at five grams or more per serving,” she says. “Throw blackberries into your next oatmeal or raspberries into your next pudding or yogurt parfait.”

You’ve heard the term “liquid lunch.” It doesn’t only mean having a beer at noontime. High-calorie beverages are often a sneaky way to consume more calories every day than you realize. Make water, sparkling water, and unsweetened iced tea your go-to beverages.

“We tell patients to reconsider any drinkable calories, like soda, juice, and even healthy ‘green’ smoothies or juices, because they are not typically seen as a meal,” says Avantika Waring, MD, and Chief Medical Officer at 9am.health. “Most of them contain sugar. Make sure to check the nutrition facts on all beverages you buy and drink.”

Are you in the habit of shaking those paper sugar packets before dumping them into your coffee shop beverage? Satisfying, isn’t it? Or maybe you prefer squirting those sugary flavored syrups into your coffee. Sweetening your beverages or cereal with sugar can add up to lots of added sugar calories without you realizing it.

The Nutrition Twins recommend replacing sugar with cinnamon. “You’ll avoid the extra calories, and the inflammation sugar causes that’s linked to weight gain,” they say. Plus, cinnamon has weight loss and blood sugar benefits.”

A 2019 study in the International Journal of Food Science suggests that as little as a 1/3 teaspoon a day of cinnamon can lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglycerides.

“Sprinkle cinnamon in your coffee, cereal, smoothies, popcorn, yogurt, oatmeal, muffins, baked goods, and more,” the Nutrition Twins advise.

Don’t ditch your friends, but do be aware that social pressure can certainly lead to a higher food intake at dinner than you really planned on.

“Whether it’s an alcoholic drink or getting several desserts, having friends around who don’t necessarily support your weight loss efforts can be difficult,” says Amidor. “Your best bet is to review the menu in advance and determine, based on your intake for the day, what you’ll be eating. It is okay to leave room for dessert if you know your friends like to order it, but recommend sharing one dessert with one or two other people.”

Stepping on a weight scale can be a useful tool for losing weight. Or not. For one, it doesn’t always accurately reflect the progress you’re making in losing body fat.

“Relying too much on total pounds can be discouraging and make it difficult to stay motivated,” says Moskovtiz. “Instead of worrying about your weight, pay attention to non-scale successes such as improvement in energy, digestion, sleep, and mood stability.”

A more reliable way to get accurate numbers if you need them to stay motivated is body composition analysis, which reveals your body fat versus muscle mass versus water weight.

“The best tool to help you recognize self-sabotaging behaviors is by keeping a journal,” says Moskovitz. “Don’t just track the food you eat, but also portions, hunger and fullness levels, emotions involved around mealtime, and where you are during the meal. Writing down food behaviors in real time is a highly effective method to stay accountable and self-aware.”

Getting enough protein in your diet is important at any age because it “can help maintain muscle mass, strength, bone health, and is one of the best ways to help with your weight loss efforts,” says Courtney D’Angelo, MS, RD, author at GoWellness.

However, protein becomes even more crucial for your well-being as you age. “Those over the age of 60 are more at risk for losing muscle mass, and not eating enough protein throughout the day could expedite the process,” says D’Angelo.

She suggests incorporating more foods like eggs, salmon, grass-fed beef, chicken, or turkey into your diet when you can. “You can even adapt a healthy habit in the morning by choosing to add whey protein to your coffee or oatmeal, that way you can start your day off strong.”

Fox News host Tucker Carlson said, “Gavin Newsom is turning the state of California into a swamp” on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

TUCKER CARLSON: In addition to all the other problems that California has, housing prices there are higher than any place in the country. The median home price in the state of California is now more than 800,000 dollars, that’s more than double the nationwide median. In recent years, because this really is a problem, leaders in California passed dozens of bills they claim would fix the problem. Governor Jerry Brown, the last guy, signed 15 housing bills just in 2017. Last year, Gavin Newsom signed 18 separate housing bills. Did they work? No, not at all. They did not work for the people who live in California. But they weren’t intended for people who wanted to buy houses. Instead, those bills had one purpose: destroying suburban homes and replacing them with highly dense housing. Real estate developers make more money when singlefamily homes are leveled and replaced with apartment complexes, obviously. And real estate developers happen to be major donors to the Democratic Party of California, and in particular to Gavin Newsom. 

The real estate development firm Marcus was one of Newsom’s biggest donors in the recent recall election. This week after surviving the recall, tragically, Gavin Newsom rewarded those real estate developers the biggest, quote, housing bill ever. Newsom just signed a series of bills, SB9 and SB10, that will abolish the suburbs in the state of California. The state that invented the suburbs. Those bills were endorsed by the California Building Industry Association, which represents, quote, “The interest of builders and developers of housing and commercial projects. They’re about to be quite a few new commercial projects in California’s suburbs.” As the New York Times put it, quote, “SB9 essentially ends single-family zoning.” Property owners now have the state’s approval to convert any single-family home in the state of California into a 4-unit apartment complex. How is this improving anyone’s life? It won’t. It means demolishing homes to put up rental units. 

At the behest of his donors, Gavin Newsom is turning the state of California into a swamp. It’s not just happening in California, recently Oregon passed a statewide ban on single-family zoning. This is insane! Cities like Minneapolis and Sacramento have begun to allow multifamily dwellings on single-family lots. Crowding problem, anyone think? Only the government of China, by the way, appears to be doing anything to reign in real estate developers. “Housing should be living and not for speculation,” said the President of China. Woo, hate to quote the president of China, but in this case, he is right one of the largest and most leveraged real estate companies in the world is collapsing and China has given the indication they’re not interested in bailing out ever again. In this country, real estate companies don’t just get bailouts, they get to write the law, wreck your neighborhood. And in many parts of America, they will be able to demolish the home next door and turn it into an apartment complex. Great!
