Shah Rukh Khan’s “Unstoppable” Film Makes History, Over Rs 200 Crore Worldwide

Pathaan Box Office Report: Shah Rukh Khan in a still from the film

Shah Rukh Khan’s new release Pathaan made history on its second day at the box office, setting another record with earnings of Rs 68 crore. This sum, reported by trade analyst Taran Adarsh, is the total collected by the Hindi version of the film in ticket sales at home. On Day 2, which was yesterday, Pathaan made nearly Rs 70 crore – the first Hindi film to approach this number in a single day’s takings. Added to the Rs 55 crore earned on its opening day, Pathaan‘s India business now totals Rs 123 crore. The Tamil and Telugu dubs added another Rs 4.5 crore over two days. The worldwide ticket sales for two days add up to over Rs 200 crore.

Taran Adarsh tweeted: “All BO records demolished. Pathaan creates history on Day 2 as well. First Hindi film to near Rs 70 crore on a single day. Wed 55 cr, Th 68 cr (Republic Day). Total: Rs 123 cr. Hindi version. India biz. Unimaginable. Unprecedented. Unstoppable.” He reported the Tamil and Telugu numbers in a second tweet.

See Taran Adarsh’s tweets here:

Pathaan‘s first day collections of Rs 55 crore broke the record set by the Hindi version of KGF: Chapter 2 – Shah Rukh Khan’s film is Bollywood’s biggest opener. With overseas earnings added, Pathaan made its 100 crores on Day 1 itself – Rs 106 crore worldwide, to be precise.

The film hit a second century on Day 2 with worldwide earnings at over Rs 219 crore.

Several other firsts have piled up as well – Pathaan opened in 8,000 screens worldwide, the highest for any Hindi film; 300 shows were added by exhibitors after the very first screening. Pathaan sold about 5.5 lakh tickets in advance bookings, second only to the Hindi dub of KGF: Chapter 2 in terms of Hindi films.

Pathaan, Shah Rukh Khan’s first lead role since 2018’s Zero, is an action thriller set in Yash Raj Films’ spy universe. Directed by Siddharth Anand, Pathaan stars SRK in the title role of a RAW agent who teams p with Deepika Padukone’s ISI agent to tackle a terror threat from the villainous Jim, played by John Abraham.

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ crosses $2 billion mark in worldwide box office

CNN
 —

As has frequently been the case throughout his unparalleled career, James Cameron made film history again this weekend.

His long-awaited sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” has now made over $2 billion in worldwide grosses, as reported by Deadline.

That grand total is after the film’s box office take from this weekend, the sixth consecutive weekend the film has occupied the No. 1 spot since its release in December.

CNN has reached out to “Avatar: The Way of Water” producing studio Disney for comment on the film’s latest financial achievement.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” is the sequel to Cameron’s 2009 extraterrestrial epic “Avatar,” which remains at the top of the list of biggest-selling films of all time, according to Box Office Mojo.

Another of Cameron’s films is also in the $2 billion club – 1997’s “Titanic.” Only three other films are part of that club – 2015’s “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens,” “Avengers: Infinity War” from 2018, and “Avengers: Endgame” from one year later.

Cameron is therefore the only director who can boast that three of his films are among the six to have made over $2 billion, as well as in top 6 bestselling movies of all time.

The director is planning to release at least three other “Avatar” sequels going forward.

Astronomers Worldwide ‘Troubled’ By New ‘Cell Phone Tower in Space’

A sprawling new satellite built to connect directly with mobile phones on the surface is brighter than most of the stars in the night sky, according to astronomers who are calling it a threat to their work and humanity’s view of the universe.

The offending orbital object is AST SpaceMobile’s Bluewalker 3, which was launched on Sept. 10, but its 64-square-meter (693-square-foot) array of solar panels and antennas was just fully unfurled earlier this month.

The International Astronomical Union coordinated observations from around the planet, which found that the satellite is almost as bright as stars such as Antares and Spica, the 15th and 16th brightest in the night sky, respectively. Another study found it to be a little less reflective, on par with the 22nd brightest star or so.

It isn’t just Bluewalker 3 that concerns astronomers, but rather the fact it serves as a test model for a constellation of over 100 so-called Bluebirds the company aims to launch as part of its plan to build a network of satellites to provide 5G connectivity from space.

“BlueWalker 3 is a big shift in the constellation satellite issue and should give us all reason to pause,” Piero Benvenuti, director of the IAU Center for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky from Satellite Constellation Interference, said in a statement.

Astronomers have been more concerned about the potential impacts from mega-constellations of thousands of satellites like SpaceX’s Starlink, but the IAU says AST SpaceMobile’s plans raise new issues because of the strong radio waves they will transmit that could interfere with astronomical observations.

Philip Diamond, who directs the the Square Kilometer Array Observatory in South Africa and Australia, worries that orbiting “cell towers” aren’t subject to the same “quiet zone” restrictions that protect radio astronomers from interference by terrestrial cellular networks.

“Astronomers build radio telescopes as far away as possible from human activity, looking for places on the planet where there is limited or no cell phone coverage,” Diamond said. “New satellites such as BlueWalker 3 have the potential to worsen this situation and compromise our ability to do science if not properly mitigated.”

The IAU notes that it has already begun conversations with AST SpaceMobile about potential mitigation measures.

“We are actively working with industry experts on the latest innovations, including next-generation anti-reflective materials,” the company said through a spokesperson.

The company adds it “is committed to avoiding broadcasts inside or adjacent to the National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ) in the US and additional radioastronomy locations that are not officially recognized, as required or needed. We also plan to place gateway antennas far away from the NRQZ and other radio-quiet zones that are important to astronomy.”

AST SpaceMobile CEO Abel Avellan said in a statement earlier this month the goal is to build a constellation that will eliminate mobile dead zones on Earth.

“Every person should have the right to access cellular broadband, regardless of where they live or work. Our goal is to close the connectivity gaps that negatively impact billions of lives around the world.”
