KJ Apa complains that working on Riverdale is like being ‘in jail’

KJ Apa had some harsh words about his CW series Riverdale in a new interview in which he said working on the series was like being ‘in jail.’

The 23-year-old New Zealander actor opened up for Interview Magazine in a conversation with his Songbird costar Demi Moore that was published earlier this week.

He chatted with the 58-year-old Ghost star about the seemingly oppressive rules on the set of Riverdale, which is inspired by the classic Archie comics series.

Behind bars: Riverdale star KJ Apa, 23, said that working on the CW series feels like being ‘in jail’ in a chat with Demi Moore, 58, published earlier this week for Interview Magazine; seen in March 2020 in Hollywood

The two screen stars opened their interview with a discussion of their film Songbird, which takes place in 2024, when the novel coronavirus has mutated into Covid-23, a more contagious and deadly strain that forces most of the world’s population to stay indoors perpetually.

According to Apa, the movie was a refreshing change of pace from his teen crime series.

‘I felt so free coming from a show where I feel like I’m in jail a lot of the time,’ he said. ‘There are so many restrictions on what I can and can’t do.’

He continued: ‘With this [Songbird] character, it was like, “Wow, this is what it’s like to really express myself in a natural way.” I wasn’t covered in makeup or hair products. I had long hair and a beard. I just felt free.’

Restricted: ‘I felt so free coming from a show where I feel like I’m in jail a lot of the time,’ he said. ‘There are so many restrictions on what I can and can’t do’; still from Riverdale

What a difference: ‘With this [Songbird] character, it was like, “Wow, this is what it’s like to really express myself in a natural way.” I wasn’t covered in makeup or hair products. I had long hair and a beard. I just felt free’; still from the Songbird trailer

Apa is best known for his Riverdale look, in which his character Archie Andrews has red–orange hair and usually sports a clean-shaven face.

He departed significantly from that put-together look in Songbird, in which his character sports thick stubble and he wore his natural brown hair in a shaggy pandemic hairdo.

Lest he be accused of being ungrateful for the career-boasting role, the TV star was quick to add that he was ‘so grateful for the show and its success,’ but he also complained of ‘pressure’ that comes with playing a beloved character.

‘There’s been so much pressure in playing Archie. I’m so grateful for the show and its success, but at the same time, there’s a lot of baggage that comes with that success,’ he told Moore. ‘I feel like the only people I can talk to about my issues are my costars, the people who can really relate to me.’

He singled out Cole Sprouse, who plays Jughead Jones, as a helpful presence because of his experience in the film and television industry going back to his work as a child with his twin brother Dylan Sprouse.

Mixed emotions: Apa said he was ‘grateful’ for Riverdale, but also complained about the ‘pressure’ of the show, especially from fans who can’t separate him from his character; publicity still for Riverdale

He also complained about being judged for his personal attitudes by fans who can’t always separate him from his character.

‘There are times when I’m like, “Wow, they really have no idea that we are actual people. They can’t separate us from our characters,”‘ he said.

‘You don’t have that in other professions. You don’t dissect the life of a builder and start judging the decisions he makes in his life with his wife and kids.

‘As an actor, I will be judged on everything: my political opinions, my opinions on drugs, my opinions on the people I want to be with. Everything. It’s something I’ve had to come to terms with,’ he added.

Apa and Moore found some common ground during their conversation, as they realized they both got their starts on soap operas, with the Riverdale star working on Shortland Street, while Moore appeared on General Hospital.

She revealed she was inspired by Paris, Texas actress Nastassja Kinski, who was her friend and neighbor at the time.

Apa isn’t alone in complaining about the restrictive atmosphere on Riverdale, as his costar Lili Reinhart has previously said she felt like a ‘prisoner’ when she returned to shoot the fifth season in Vancouver amid the pandemic.

‘I genuinely feel like a prisoner, going back to work, because I cannot leave Canada. That doesn’t feel good,’ she said in a profile for Nylon.

‘You can’t go home for Thanksgiving, can’t visit your family. No one can come visit you unless they quarantine for two weeks. It just feels f***ed.’

Today’s Xbox Live outage started about three hours ago, according to the timestamp on the tweet and the roaring complains of suddenly offline gamers. Many recently bought the new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles expected to go online.

Microsoft’s status page indicates that Xbox Live being down is ongoing and affects some core functionality. Across its online gaming community, you won’t be able access your account and profile, the Xbox store and or its subscription service, and, key, multiplayer gaming and cloud gaming. This includes Xbox Game Pass, which has been heavily pushed by Microsoft in this new console generation.

In other words, you can’t do much of anything with the Xbox Series X, Series S or Xbox One when it comes to Xbox Live functionality. “Friends and social activity”, for example, remains intact, so you can join a watch party or prune your Xbox Live friends list. Exciting for a Thursday night.

TechRadar has reached out to Microsoft for additional comment.

Google says it’s working to get ‘Hey Google’ working on Wear OS again

Activating the Google Assistant by saying “Hey Google” has been broken for months, according to a report from 9to5Google. Google tells The Verge it’s now working on a fix, saying that it’s “aware of the issues some users have been encountering” and will help its partners “address these and improve the overall experience.”

There are a good number of users reporting the issue — a post on Google’s Issue Tracker has almost a thousand stars. Reading through the thread, it’s clear that many users with different smartwatch models are all reporting the same issue going back to November 2020. They say the assistant isn’t completely unusable, as users are still able to trigger it with a long button-press, but if the voice-activation feature hasn’t been working for that long, it likely doesn’t help the perception that Google doesn’t care about Wear OS.

Google’s statement doesn’t make it clear how long it’ll be until the issue is fixed, but hopefully it’s getting attention now. While Wear OS may not be core to Google’s strategy, the Assistant seems to be, and it’d be nice for people who have chosen to put Google’s OS on their wrists to have easy access to it.

U.S. and Israel to reconvene Iran working group

The United States and Israel have elected to reconvene a strategic working group on Iran, with the first round of talks on intelligence surrounding the Iranian nuclear program expected in the coming days, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have sharply contrasting views of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, but the resumption of the working group is a signal that their governments are starting with a serious and professional dialogue rather than a political fight.

Flashback: The working group was established in the early days of the Obama administration following a White House visit from Netanyahu in 2009. The top-secret forum was even given a special code name.

  • It was the main venue for strategizing over how to apply pressure to Iran during Obama’s first term, and it became the primary setting to air disagreements about the nuclear deal during Obama’s second term.
  • During Donald Trump’s tenure, the forum convened to discuss the U.S. withdrawal from the nuclear deal and to coordinate the “maximum pressure” campaign.
  • The forum is headed by the U.S. and Israeli national security advisers — currently Jake Sullivan and Meir Ben-Shabbat — and includes top officials from across the various national security, foreign policy and intelligence agencies in both countries.

Driving the news: Sullivan proposed the resumption of the working group in his first phone call with Ben-Shabbat on Jan. 23.

  • Israel was engaged in an interagency disagreement over how to engage with the White House over Iran, and the decision of whether to accept the proposal was further delayed by Israel’s domestic turmoil ahead of next month’s elections.

Behind the scenes: On Monday, Netanyahu held the first high-level interagency meeting on Iran with Minister of Defense Benny Gantz, Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, and the chiefs of the other national security and intelligence agencies.

  • The meeting started with the various agencies providing updates on their engagements to date with the Biden administration, to provide a full picture of what had been discussed through the various channels, sources familiar with the meeting tell me.
  • Next came proposals on how to engage with the Biden administration going forward. The directors of the Mossad intelligence agency and Israel Defense Forces both stressed the need for a quiet dialogue, free from public confrontations.
  • The main action item was the decision to accept the proposal to resume the working group.

What’s next: The top Israeli priority in the first meeting — which will take place over a secure video conference system — is to lay out all the latest intelligence and data on Iran’s nuclear program and assess whether the U.S. and Israeli intelligence pictures align.

  • Israeli sources familiar with the issue say that a mutual intelligence baseline must be established before moving on to policy discussions.

The state of play: Netanyahu swiftly expressed concern last Friday after Secretary of State Tony Blinken said the U.S. was prepared to begin nuclear talks with Iran aimed at restoring the 2015 deal.

Prince Harry and Meghan will not return as working members of royal family

As a result, the honorary military appointments and royal patronages held by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be revoked and redistributed among working members of the royal family, the palace said in a statement.

The Queen has “written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the Royal Family, it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service,” the statement said.

“While all are saddened by their decision, the Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family,” the palace said.

The couple stepped back from official royal duties in January 2020 and moved to North America, a rare move for senior royals.

Since then, they have launched their own media ventures, and announced earlier this week that they will take part in an interview with Oprah Winfrey — their first sit-down appearance since leaving London.

A spokesman for the couple said Friday that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world” and have “offered their continued support to the organisations they have represented regardless of official role.”

“We can all live a life of service. Service is universal,” the spokesman added.

The announcement comes just days after the couple revealed that they are expecting their second child.
Prince Philip, the Queen’s husband and Harry’s grandfather, is currently in a London hospital as a “precautionary measure” after feeling unwell.

Amazon Is Working on Digital Currency Solutions— Pilot Project Set to Launch in Mexico – News Bitcoin News

The e-commerce giant is preparing to explore the crypto business, as a recent job listing suggests. Amazon is looking to launch a pilot project in Mexico that seeks to build a team that develops new solutions based on “digital currencies.”

E-Commerce Giant Amazon Seeks to Target Customers in ‘Emerging Markets’

According to a job posting, Jeff Bezos’ multinational firm was on the hunt this week for a Software Development Manager for the division of “Digital and Emerging Payments.” The job role has been reportedly filled as the offer is no longer available as of press time.

Amazon stated in the job ad that the new payment product will be deployed on an initial stage in Mexico. One part of the description reads as follow:

This product will enable customers to convert their cash in to digital currency using which customers can enjoy online services including shopping for goods and/or services like Prime Video.

The role requires an expert in computer science or engineering, with experience managing the delivery of distributed software systems. Moreover, Amazon clarifies that it expects to build a tech team to build payments solutions that target “emerging markets.”

The chosen person must be based in Seattle, Washington. Also, it’s not mandatory to have any specific blockchain or crypto-related background.

Amazon New CEO’s Relationship With the Blockchain Technology

Amazon just appointed Andy Jassy as the new CEO, after Jeff Bezos stepped down from the role. In fact, since some time ago, Jassy had been showing an interest in blockchain technology and exploring it to adopt solutions for new payment options. Jassy was the CEO of Amazon Web Services at the time.

So far, the e-commerce giant has not publicly addressed its plans on deploying this upcoming digital currency solution in Mexico. However, the move comes in the wake of mainstream companies’ announcements related to bitcoin (BTC) investments or crypto adoption in general.

Recently, Elon Musk’s company Tesla announced in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Form 10-k filing that the firm had purchased $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin.

On February 11, as news.Bitcoin.com reported, payments giant Mastercard revealed that it is preparing to allow a number of cryptocurrencies to move through its network directly.

What do you think about Amazon’s plans on possibly implementing digital currencies into the platform? Let us know in the comments section below.

OnePlus could be working on a phone with a selfie camera inside the bezel

Credit: Ryan-Thomas Shaw / Android Authority

  • OnePlus has patented a way of tucking away the selfie camera in the bezel of a phone.
  • The company noted in a 23-page patent application that such a device will feature a high screen-to-body ratio.
  • It could be OnePlus’ latest attempt at making an interruption-free smartphone display.

OnePlus could be working on a way to eliminate punch-hole cutouts or notches on its smartphones, and no, we’re not talking about putting in a pop-up mechanism. Instead, the company seems to be working on a “display apparatus” that fits the selfie shooter within the thin bezels of a phone.

Folks over at LetsGoDigital spotted a patent document filed by OnePlus with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). The 23-page documentation describes a OnePlus phone with an OLED display. A hole for the selfie camera is made on the top bezel covered with a “transparent cover plate.”

The patent application describes this display apparatus as having a “high screen-to-body ratio, low production cost, high yield, and high product reliability.”

While under-display selfie cameras are where the industry is headed next, the technology is not quite ready to take off just yet. ZTE’s Axon 20 5G is a prime example of how reliable under-display cameras might still be a while away. Our readers are also of vary of buying early under-display camera phones.

Meanwhile, OnePlus’ patented solution seems like an effective way of creating an interruption-free display. However, since it’s just that, a patent, we’re unsure if the company is serious about commercializing the design. We’re certain that we won’t see anything like this on the OnePlus 9 series, given that leaked renders already show a punch-hole on the screen.

For now, all eyes are on OnePlus’ alleged tie-up with Hasselblad for its upcoming flagships. Whether or not this new selfie camera placement is on top of OnePlus’ priority list is anybody’s guess.

Kamala Harris TV appearance in West Virginia surprises Manchin: ‘That’s not working together’

Vice President Kamala Harris promoted the Biden administration’s “critical” coronavirus “American Rescue Plan” this week in a pair of interviews with local TV stations in West Virginia and Arizona.

But U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said he was surprised by the Harris interview in his state, claiming no one from the administration had called him to discuss the appearance, WSAZ-TV of Huntington, W.Va., reported.

The communication gap was a departure from the national “unity” theme that Harris and President Biden have promoted, he suggested.

“We’re going to try to find a bipartisan pathway forward, but we need to work together,” Manchin told the station. “That’s not a way of working together.”

SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS REACT TO BIDEN’S ‘AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN’

Manchin, 73, who has represented West Virginia in the Senate since 2010 and previously served as its governor, is known for an independent streak that has often placed him at odds with national Democratic Party leaders.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ appearance on local TV in West Virginia didn’t sit well with U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.

With the Senate evenly split at 50 Republicans and 48 Democrats — plus independents Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Angus King of Maine who typically side with the Democrats — keeping more free-thinking Democrats like Manchin and Arizona’s Sen. Kyrsten Sinema in the fold is seen as key for the Biden administration to advance its agenda.

Whether the Harris interviews were designed to pressure Manchin and Sinema into backing the American Rescue Plan was not immediately clear. Following the TV appearances, White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked why the vice president chose to address local media in the two states.

“We want to make the case to the American people across the country. … This is a way to do just that,” Psaki said. She added that Harris would likely do more regional interviews in other states.

In her TV remarks, Harris explained the “urgency” of the $1.9 trillion plan that would give out an additional $1,400 in stimulus checks to Americans, expand unemployment insurance, and increase the child tax credit.

When asked about the plan, Manchin said he believed the stimulus checks should go only to those in need, not to everyone.

“We want to help everybody that needs help,” Manchin told WSAZ. “But if a person is making $250,000 or $300,000, I don’t think they’re in much as need as a person making $40,000 or $50,000. We’re going to target it.”

“We want to help everybody that needs help. But if a person is making $250,000 or $300,000, I don’t think they’re in much as need as a person making $40,000 or $50,000. We’re going to target it.”

— U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.

Harris added the plan would also give money to businesses, schools so kids could go back safely, extend the eviction moratorium, and create a national vaccine program, she told WSAZ.

A reporter from the station asked Harris why the many Trump supporters West Virginia should trust the new administration.

“Because we have faith in the American people,” she said. “We ran as Democrats, but we are Americans and we will lead as Americans. We want our country to be strong, we want our country to be healthy, we want our children to thrive, and that’s the bottom line. That’s why we’re doing this.”

STEPHEN MOORE: BIDEN’S $1.9 TRILLION ‘RESCUE PLAN’ COULD DESTROY 4 MILLION JOBS – HERE’S A BETTER IDEA

She also told interviewers in both states that President Biden believes that solving the climate change crisis and job creation complement each other.

“It’s about investing in everything that ranges from manufacturing so that America is the leader in electric vehicles, to what we can do to invest in infrastructure, and that’s about jobs,” she told KNXV-TV in Phoenix. “Our plan includes what we will do to actually invest in America’s work force.”

She also said the administration wanted to work to help coal miners in West Virginia transfer their job skills.

“All of those skilled workers who are in the coal industry and transferring those skills to what we need to do in terms of dealing with reclaiming abandoned land mines,” she told WSAZ.

“What we need to do around plugging leaks from oil and gas wells; and, transferring those important skills to the work that has yet to be done that needs to get done.”

She added to KNXV that the only way all Americans would be able to efficiently get the vaccine is by “having the resources to support governors like [Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican] to support local folks to get the resources … to have vaccines, vaccination centers. We have a whole plan in the American Rescue plan that’s about a national program for vaccinations.”
