Hesperia shootout: 15-year-old girl shot at deputies before she was killed in 15 Freeway gun battle, sheriff says

HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) — A 15-year-old girl shot at deputies before she was killed in a highway shootout between her father – a fugitive wanted in the death of the teen’s mother – and law enforcement, the San Bernardino County sheriff said Wednesday.

Anthony John Graziano and his daughter, Savannah Graziano, were killed Tuesday in a shootout with deputies on the 15 Freeway in Hesperia after a 45-mile chase. Shots were fired at the officers from the pickup truck as it was being chased.

Once it came to a stop, the girl, wearing a tactical helmet and vest, got out and ran toward deputies amid a hail of gunfire, police said. Authorities are investigating whether she was shot by deputies or her father, or both.

Police have said the only weapon retrieved at the scene was a rifle in the truck, where Anthony Graziano died. There is police video of the shootout that authorities are reviewing.

In a 39-second video posted on social media Wednesday, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said that evidence suggested the 15-year-old girl was “a participant in shooting at our deputies.” Dicus did not provide further specific details in the video.

On Tuesday, Dicus said during a news conference that it was possible that the teenager had fired at deputies amid the chaos, but investigators were still trying to determine if that was the case.

The California Department of Justice announced Wednesday that it is investigating the shooting. A state law that took effect last year requires the department to review any officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of an unarmed civilian.

More details that shed light into what led to the highway gun battle were released Wednesday.

Police in Fontana – where Graziano’s wife, Tracy Martinez, was killed Monday near an elementary school – offered some details about the family’s life before the bloodshed.

Anthony Graziano had moved out of the family’s home a month or two before the killing, as the couple went through a divorce, Fontana Sgt. Christian Surgent told The Associated Press. Savannah Graziano left with her father, while her younger brother stayed with their mother.

Police issued an Amber Alert after Martinez’s killing, saying Savannah Graziano had been abducted by her father. Detectives are trying to determine whether or not she was forced into leaving Fontana.

A public information officer with the Fontana Police Department told Eyewitness News Savannah was in the vehicle when Anthony Graziano shot and killed his wife.

Fontana police had not received any reports of domestic violence at the home before this week, Surgent said, and child services had not been involved with the family. Neither parent was on probation or parole at the time and investigators believe Savannah was being home-schooled while she lived with her father, who police said liked to camp out in the desert and mountains in his pickup truck.

A 911 caller Tuesday reported seeing the suspect’s Nissan Frontier around Barstow.

Law enforcement located the pickup truck and chased it on the highway to Hesperia. Throughout the pursuit, Graziano was “constantly shooting back at the deputies” with a rifle through the truck’s rear window, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Tuesday during a news conference.

Dicus said there were “some indications” Savannah was shooting at deputies during the chase but didn’t provide any details.

A firefight in Hesperia ensued when the truck went off-road and somehow became disabled, with dozens of bullets flying. Savannah ran toward deputies – who did not realize it was her – in the chaos and went down amid the gunfire. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly before noon.

Her father was found in the driver’s seat and pronounced dead at the scene.

15-year-old Savannah Graziano, killed in Hesperia shootout, had been staying with father before mother’s slaying in Fontana

HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) — A man who was accused of killing his estranged wife in Fontana and abducting their 15-year-old daughter had been living with the teenager out of his pickup truck and hotels for weeks before the violence, authorities said Wednesday.

Anthony John Graziano and his daughter, Savannah Graziano, were killed Tuesday in a shootout with law enforcement on a highway in the high desert after a 45-mile chase. The girl, wearing a tactical helmet and military-style vest that can hold armored plates, ran toward deputies amid a hail of gunfire. Authorities are investigating whether she was shot by deputies or her father, or both. San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Wednesday that evidence suggested the teenager was “a participant in shooting at our deputies.”

While many questions remain regarding Tuesday’s gun battle, police in Fontana – where Graziano’s wife, 45-year-old Tracy Martinez, was killed Monday – offered some details about the family’s life before the bloodshed erupted this week.

Graziano, 45, had moved out of the family’s home a month or two before the mother’s killing, as the couple went through a divorce, Fontana police Sgt. Christian Surgent told The Associated Press and confirmed to ABC7. Savannah Graziano left with her father, while her younger brother stayed with their mother.

Police issued an Amber Alert after Martinez’s killing, saying Savannah Graziano had been abducted by her father. Detectives are trying to determine whether or not she was coerced into leaving Fontana.

“Did she go willingly?” Surgent said. “Or was she actually abducted? We haven’t been able to prove that just yet.”

Fontana police had not received any reports of domestic violence at the home before the slaying, Surgent said, and child services had not been involved with the family. Neither parent was on probation or parole at the time and investigators believe Savannah was being home-schooled while she lived with her father, whom police said liked to camp out in the desert and mountains in his pickup truck.

On Monday, witnesses saw Martinez walking in Fontana when Graziano picked her up in his truck. Surgent said it was not clear whether she was forced into the vehicle or got in on her own.

“And immediately that’s when they started arguing and yelling and domestic violence was occurring,” he said.

Martinez got out of the truck – potentially to escape – and Graziano opened fire on her with a handgun, striking her multiple times, Surgent said. The shooting on the street near an elementary school during morning drop-off forced students and parents to duck for cover.

“The man just came down the street shooting. He started shooting in that direction,” neighborhood resident Andy Davis told ABC7. “Hit those trees, houses across the street. They say the bullets were skipping off the street, and the woman was trying to run for her life, and unfortunately she was hit. Once she was hit I guess he shot at her a few more times.”

Graziano fled the scene and drove to get Savannah, who had been somewhere else at the time – likely wherever they had been staying that day, Surgent said. The son was at the family’s home at the time and was not involved.

The next day, a 911 caller reported seeing the suspect’s Nissan Frontier around Barstow.

Deputies located the pickup truck and chased it on the highway for around 45 miles to Hesperia. Throughout the pursuit, Graziano – and possibly his daughter as well – was “constantly shooting back at the deputies” with a rifle through the truck’s rear window, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Tuesday during a news conference.

The pickup truck became disabled on the shoulder of a highway in Hesperia, and a firefight ensued, with dozens of bullets flying. Savannah ran toward deputies – who did not realize it was her – in the chaos and went down amid the gunfire. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly before noon.

Her father was found in the driver’s seat and pronounced dead at the scene.

Although the only weapon found — a rifle — was in the truck with Graziano, detectives said it was possible that his daughter was also firing.

But on Wednesday, Dicus said in a 39-second video posted on social media that evidence suggested that the 15-year-old girl was “a participant in shooting at our deputies.” Dicus did not provide further details into when she allegedly fired at deputies.

One deputy was injured by shrapnel during the firefight, Dicus said.

Fugitive murder suspect, his teen daughter killed in shootout with deputies on 15 Freeway in Hesperia; Amber Alert deactivated

HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) — An abducted 15-year-old girl and her father – a fugitive wanted in the shooting death of the teen’s mother – were killed in a shootout with sheriff’s deputies on the 15 Freeway in Hesperia Tuesday, authorities said.

San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said at an afternoon news conference that Savannah Graziano was wearing tactical gear as she ran toward deputies while the shootout was unfolding.

The teenager was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly before noon.

Authorities did not specify whether the teen was struck by bullets fired by her father or responding deputies.

Her father, 45-year-old Anthony John Graziano, was pronounced dead at the scene. He allegedly killed his estranged wife in a domestic violence incident on Monday in the city of Fontana.

Investigators had issued an Amber Alert after Graziano fled with his daughter, Savannah, in a white 2017 Nissan Frontier with California plates. Graziano was described as armed and dangerous.

The sheriff’s department said it received a call Tuesday morning about a vehicle matching the description of the Amber Alert that was triggered Monday for the teen. The call stated the vehicle was traveling southbound on the freeway in Barstow.

Authorities caught up to the vehicle at the Main Street exit in Hesperia and there was an exchange of gunfire between a suspect and deputies. Witnesses of the shootout reported hearing a massive exchange of gunfire.

Deputies had been in pursuit of the father’s pickup truck, and multiple shots were fired out of the rear window during the chase.

The vehicle became disabled around Hesperia, and the firefight ensued. Dicus said the girl was wearing tactical gear as she exited a truck’s passenger side and ran toward the sheriff’s deputies. The deputies did not initially realize it was the girl who was running toward them, Dicus said, because she was wearing a helmet and a military-style vest that can hold armored plates.

Even though the only weapon found was in the truck with Graziano, detectives say it’s possible his daughter was also firing.

“There may be some information that the passenger was involved in firing back at the deputies and we’re still trying to confirm that at this point,” Dicus said.

Tuesday’s crime scene caused major backups along Interstate 15. The southbound 15 was closed at Main Street.

The search for Graziano began Monday after his wife was shot and killed near a Fontana elementary school, which triggered panic among parents and schoolchildren nearby. At the time, the suspect was believed to be with his daughter.

“The man just came down the street shooting. He started shooting in that direction,” neighborhood resident Andy Davis told Eyewitness News Monday. “Hit those trees, houses across the street. They say the bullets were skipping off the street, and the woman was trying to run for her life, and unfortunately she was hit. Once she was hit I guess he shot at her a few more times.”

An Amber Alert was issued for the teen shortly after the killing, but according to the California Highway Patrol, the alert has since been deactivated.

Romero said Graziano is a Fontana resident but investigators learned he previously lived in Arizona.

Lightning strike death: Woman killed in Pico Rivera while walking dogs identified as 52-year-old Antonia Mendoza Chavez

PICO RIVERA, Calif. (KABC) — The woman who was killed by a lightning strike in Pico Rivera Wednesday has been identified – and home surveillance footage shows what her landlord believes were her last moments alive.

According to authorities, 52-year-old Antonia Mendoza Chavez and her two dogs were killed by a lightning strike Wednesday morning.

Paramedics and police were called to the area of Rimbank and Mines avenues, near the San Gabriel River around 8:50 a.m.

Pico Rivera City Manager Steve Carmona said Chavez was found deceased on the path with her two dogs.

She had apparently been struck by the lightning as storms moved through Southern California in the morning.

Eyewitness News spoke with Gloria Colocho, who said she was Chavez’s landlord. She told ABC7 Chavez walked that trail every morning.

Colocho shared footage from her Nest camera showing what she claims is Chavez walking her dogs Wednesday morning.

“I called her and I texted her and she didn’t answer, and the message was not delivered to the cell phone,” said Colocho. “I called her and it went straight to voicemail, and from there, I had this feeling that it was her. I checked my camera … she left around 7:30 a.m. and I see her with her two dogs, and she left the house and she hasn’t come back at all.”

The city warned its residents in the area to stay inside until the storm passed.

“We should all be cautious with this activity that’s in the area,” Carmona said. “We want everybody to be careful. There’s a lot of instability in the air. Just be careful and do your best to stay indoors at this time.”

Deaths by lightning are very rare in California.

There have only been nine fatalities in the state since 2006, and this was the first one this year.

The nation as a whole sees about six deaths by lightning through June 22 in an average year.

News of the tragedy was disturbing to residents in the area.

“I’m scared,” said Mary Perez, who lives in the area. “I told my granddaughter and her friend, she’s not walking to school, I’m taking her. I think more about the lightning. Not that I never thought about it. I didn’t think it could really do that. It’s just awful.”

The woman was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but did not survive. At an afternoon news conference, Beverly Hills police Chief Mark Stainbrook confirmed the woman killed was 81-year-old Jacqueline Avant.

“The Avant family’s contributions to the world of entertainment and to better communities across Los Angeles are unmatched,” Stainbrook said. He said the department is in contact with the family and offering their support and resources.

Avant was the wife of 90-year-old music executive Clarence Avant and mother-in-law of Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. Clarence Avant, who was not injured in the shooting, is known as the “Godfather of Black Music” who worked with the likes of Louis Armstrong, the SOS Band, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Babyface.

Clarence Avant and a security guard were present at the time of the shooting, but they were not hurt, Stainbrook said.

Stainbrook said he was asked to thank everyone for their messages of support and condolences on behalf of the Avant family.

“Jacqueline was an amazing woman, wife, mother, philanthropist, and a 55-year resident of Beverly Hills who has made an immeasurable, positive contribution and impact on the arts community. She will be missed by her family, friends, and all of the people she has helped throughout her amazing life,” Stainbrook read from the Avant family’s statement.

The Avants were married for 54 years. Danny Bakewell Sr., who is the owner of the Black newspaper the Los Angeles Sentinel,  says he is a lifelong friend of the Avant family and was “overwhelmingly pained” at the loss of such a beautiful person.

“For her to be killed in such a senseless way is unfathomable. There are no human beings more kind and generous than Clarence and Jackie, and for their home and their lives to be violated in such a violent manner is unconscionable,” he said in a statement.

Homicide investigators are at the home, which is located in the Hollywood Hills, between Coldwater Canyon and Laurel Canyon Boulevards.

“I cannot believe this is happening to our neighborhood,” Vida Ardebichi, a neighbor who said she’d often see the 81-year-old Avant out walking, said.

Lancaster shooting: Father Germarcus David, accused of killing his children, to make first court appearance

LANCASTER, Calif. (KABC) — A father suspected of fatally shooting his four children, including an infant, and his mother-in-law at a home in Lancaster is expected to make his first court appearance Tuesday.

Authorities haven’t released a possible motive for the weekend attack on Garnet Lane Sunday night.

The children’s mother returned home to find the bodies of the children, all of whom were under the age of 12, and their grandmother and called 911, authorities said.

Grace Beltran, who lives three houses away, said a woman ran back and forth in their front yard, screaming, “My babies are gone! They’re all dead!”

Germarcus David, 29, turned himself in to Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies within minutes of his wife’s arrival at home. He remained jailed on $2 million bail on Tuesday.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether he had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.

The victims were shot in the upper torso and died at the scene. The grandmother was in her 50s and was at the home babysitting, authorities said.

Sheriff’s Lt. Brandon Dean said he wasn’t aware of any previous reports of domestic violence at the home.

David was a licensed security guard and held a permit to carry a gun but it expired in August 2020 and was listed as canceled, according to records from the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, which regulates the private security industry.

What appeared to be David’s Facebook page includes a photograph of a crucifix and posts from late October and earlier this month offering spiritual and moral views.

“Just know that God loves you when you feel unloved for,” David said in a Nov. 16 post.

“The love I give will overflow from one heart to the next as a gift that keeps giving. I will be one of the reasons that others believe in the true goodness of this world,” David posted on Oct. 27, adding: “THAT is what I want my legacy to be. THAT is what I want my children to grow up seeing.”

Purse snatching victim hit and killed in east Harris Co. McDonald’s parking lot as suspect sped off in Chevy Impala, sheriff says

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — In wake of a purse-snatching that left a woman dead, the Harris County sheriff fumed Thursday over the number of recent crimes that have seemingly happened in quick succession and have targeted innocent victims.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez spoke in front of the McDonald’s on Uvalde Road in east Harris County just shortly after a Hispanic woman in her early 70s was robbed just outside of the restaurant. That holdup, deputies said, led to the woman being run over by the suspect in a black Impala that was getting away late Thursday morning.

That woman was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Gonzalez’s deputies at the same time had been dealing with one other violent crime – a woman shot and killed in north Harris County – when he sent a message directed at criminals.

“I don’t know what’s going on in our city right now, but it’s really sad,” Gonzalez said before telling criminals to “get a job.”

Details of the crime

The sheriff’s office said deputies responded to a robbery call at about 10:30 a.m. at a McDonald’s at 430 Uvalde Rd. This is a restaurant that Gonzalez called a “hub of the community” where Coffee With a Cop events, which connect residents with law enforcement, are routinely held.

According to the sheriff, it’s believed the suspect took the woman’s purse before running over her and fleeing in a black Impala sedan that may be equipped with black rims.

Gonzalez added the suspect may be a Black male.

The sheriff went on to say the victim was at the restaurant by herself and parked close to the entrance. She may have also tried to get a picture of the suspect before she was hit.

Investigators are trying to figure out if there was more than one person involved in the purse-snatching.
