One Of Competitive Pokémon’s Top Picks Is Freaking Murkrow
While competitive players continue to plumb Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s strategic depth and tease out its tactical wrinkles, one creature has gotten a shocking amount of playtime over the last month: Murkrow. The unevolved flying dark type isn’t a heavy hitter and its stats are absolute trash, but it does have a unique advantage over every other Pokémon in the game that’s sent it straight to the top of the competitive charts.
Browse social media, hang out on the Smogon message boards, or climb the ranked ladder and you won’t be able to escape Murkrow. The tiny black bird first introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver is finally back in the spotlight, and former Pokémon World Champion Wolfe “WolfeyVGC” Glick explained the reasons why in a recent TikTok:
The first is Tailwind, a move the Gen 2 bird has had from the jump, but which is supremely important in the current landscape, providing all other Pokémon on the team bonus speed for four turns. The second is Prankster, a passive ability that lets Murkow’s non-damage-dealing moves, like Tailwind, take increased turn priority during battles, thus allowing it to strike first. In Scarlet and Violet’s Gen 9, Murkrow is the only Pokémon who has both, guaranteeing a match-defining speed boost on turn one.
But why Murkrow and not its evolved form of Honchkrow? Well, Murkrow’s evolved form loses Prankster in exchange for the damage-oriented passive ability Moxie, ruining the whole strategy. Plus, players can mitigate some of Murkrow’s drawbacks by equipping the held item Eviolite which boosts the normal and special defense of Pokémon who aren’t fully evolved.
“Don’t get me wrong, the combination of Prankster is really good but it isn’t the only reason that Murkrow is popular,” WolfeyVGC added in his recent TikTok. “Murkrow also gets the attack Haze which removes all stat changes from the battlefield. This is relevant because one of the most powerful new Pokémon added is Dondozo who has a way to boost all of its stats by 2.” Haze completely nullifies that, making Murkrow a perfect counter to Dondozo in addition to being a major utility pick for boosting the rest of your team.
That’s been enough to make Murkrow the second most picked Pokémon in competitive play for December, just one percentage point behind all-star crypto coin mascot Gholdengo. As WolfeyVGC wrote in a Twitter thread a couple of weeks ago, Gholdengo’s dual ghost/steel type make it a great defensive pick, while special ability Make it Rain does a ton of damage.
The Swords-Dance-wielding Garchomp and Bulk Up defensive tank Annihilape are also top contenders, as is Hydreigon who can finally use the new games’ Terastalization mechanic to mitigate its traditional 4X weakness to Fairy-type moves. The mushroom bug Amoonguss, meanwhile, has been tearing things up thanks to Rage Powder which forces opponents to target it rather than buff themselves.
American Pickers’ Frank Fritz Hospitalized After Suffering Stroke, Says Former Costar Mike Wolfe

Frank Fritz is in the hospital after suffering a stroke, his American Pickers co-host Mike Wolfe revealed Thursday.
In an Instagram post, Wolfe, 58, wrote alongside a photo of Fritz, 56, smiling: “I have been very private in the past year in regards to Frank’s life and the journey he’s been on. There has been lots of opinions in regards to mine and Frank’s friendship and the show but now is not the time to set the record straight. Now is the time to pray for my friend.”
“Frank has suffered a stroke and is in the hospital. Please keep him in your hearts and thoughts,” he continued.
Ending with a sentimental message for Fritz, Wolfe wrote, “Frank I pray more than anything that you make it through this okay. I love you buddy.”

Fritz and Wolfe have been open about the ups and downs of their friendship. The two previously starred in The History Channel’s reality series American Pickers, which first debuted in 2010. The popular show followed Wolfe and Fritz as they traveled across the country and “earn a living by restoring forgotten relics to their former glory, transforming one person’s trash into another’s treasure,” according to History.com.
Last July, Fritz told The Sun that he left the show and was no longer in contact with Wolfe. A rep for The History Channel confirmed Fritz’s departure to PEOPLE at the time.

“I haven’t talked to Mike in two years,” Fritz told the outlet. “He knew my back was messed up, but he didn’t call me up and ask how I was doing. That’s just how it is.”
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Wolfe, said he will miss his former co-host.
“I have known Frank for as long as I can remember, he’s been like a brother to me,” his statement said. “The journey that Frank, Dani (Danielle) and I started back in 2009, like all of life, has come with its highs and lows, blessings and challenges, but it has also been the most rewarding. I will miss Frank, just like all of you, and I pray for the very best and all good things for him on the next part of his journey.”

Fritz later told The Sun that he had recently checked into rehab after struggling with alcohol addiction, and was later fired from American Pickers.

“American Pickers” star Frank Fitz has been hospitalized.
His former co-host, Mike Wolfe, took to Instagram on Thursday to announce the news.
“I have been very private in the past year in regards to Franks life and the journey he’s been on. There has been lots of opinions in regards to mine and Frank’s friendship and the show but now is not the time to set the record straight. Now is the time to pray for my friend,” his caption began.

‘American Pickers’ Star Mike Wolfe Dating Leticia Cline After Divorce
“American Pickers” star Michael Wolfe is already off the market … he’s got himself a hot new girlfriend on the heels of his wife filing for divorce.
Sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ … Mike’s dating a model named Leticia Cline. She’s a bit of a reality TV star herself, having appeared on the old WB dating show “Beauty and The Geek.”
It’s unclear how long they’ve been dating and how they met, but we’re told the relationship is “pretty serious.”

Mike and Leticia have been hanging out since at least April, when they were spotted together at a printing shop in Norfolk, VA, where she customized a jacket.
Our sources also say Leticia’s been accompanying Mike on ‘Pickers’ shoots, including one at the end of June in San Francisco, and another this week at a different California location.
TMZ broke the story … Jodi Catherine Wolfe filed for divorce back in November after nearly 10 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. She says they separated in June 2020 — so, Mike’s wasting no time getting back on the horse.
It appears Mike and Leticia have known each other for a few years … back in early 2018, she posted a photo of them together.
In addition to her reality TV background, Leticia’s also appeared in “Playboy” and “Maxim” … and once went on Howard Stern‘s radio show and rode his Sybian vibrator in the nude.
Yep, Mike knows how to pick ’em … and not just on his TV show.
