The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Next-Gen Update – Cross-Saves And Cross-Progression Explained

From December 14, any player that owns The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be treated with a free, next-generation update. This update gives players access to improved graphics as well new quests, cosmetics, and more, all for free if you already own the game. Those who do not own the game will be able to buy The Witcher 3: Complete Edition, which includes the next-gen update as well as both of the game’s narrative expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. In addition to all of that content, developer CD Projekt RED has also implemented a new online feature in The Witcher 3. This feature gives players access to cross-progression and cross-saves. Essentially, this means that players will be able to access their Witcher 3 saves on different platforms from the one they initially played on. Below, you can see exactly how to take advantage of the new cross-save system in The Witcher 3.

Cross-saves in The Witcher 3

CD Projekt RED has essentially ported over the cross-save system from Cyberpunk 2077 to The Witcher 3. Players can store their save in the cloud, which can then be accessed on different platforms. The caveat is that players can only have one cross-save active on any platform, so you couldn’t transport different saves with plans to save-scrub across platforms. Of course, this new feature also only applies to the current-gen consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and PC, as those are the platforms that are receiving the next-gen update.

Now Playing: The Witcher 3 PS4 vs PS5 Next Gen Update

In order to use the cross-save functionality in The Witcher 3, you will need to simply enable the “cross-progression” option within the settings of the game. To do this, pause The Witcher 3 and then open the “save” or “load” menu. From here, you will be able to enable cross-progression, which will then require you to log into your GoG account, which is CDPR’s digital video game marketplace.

If you don’t have a GoG account, you can make one using a valid email. Once you’ve either signed in or made a GoG account, you can return to The Witcher 3. Now, all of your saves will be uploaded to the cloud. To access your saves on a different platform, repeat the same steps as before to enable cross-progression.

After that’s done, you can then see all of your cloud saves through the “Load Game” menu, which can be accessed in-game or at the opening screen for The Witcher 3. Simply pick which save you want to load, and you will then be taken to whatever point that save was on. The only difference now is you will be on a different platform.

Cross-progression between platforms

The next-gen update for The Witcher 3 will deliver ray-tracing for consoles and graphical improvements on PC, among other updates

While you will be able to access different saves across most platforms, there is a caveat you will need to be aware of when playing The Witcher 3’s next-gen update.

To break it down, you can access your cross-progression saves regardless of what platform you’re on. Xbox Series X|S save files can be transferred to PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch, and vice versa, for example. Similarly, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X|S save files can be transferred to PC and PC save files can be transferred between different PCs and PC accounts (Steam to GoG), as well as to consoles. However, you will need to ensure you’re moving saved data across similar versions of the game, accounting for the fact that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is, in this regard, a different game than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition. If you’re trying to cross-save from, for example the PC version of the base game and the PS5 version of the Complete Edition, it won’t work, so make sure each platform you want to be involved is using the same version of the game.

The next-gen update for The Witcher 3 goes live on Wednesday, Dec. 14 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The Witcher 3’s next-gen update is borked, so here’s how to roll it back

Today is the day The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s much touted free next-gen update arrives on PC and consoles, but it’s not been going so well for a lot of us folk on PC. People have already taken to Twitter, Reddit, and Steam with their tales of performance woe since the update landed, with Steam reviews claiming it’s caused everything from reduced frame rates to issues with the HUD. The RPS Treehouse has also been having trouble since installing the 4.0 update too, getting very inconsistent frame rates on the new max settings even with a RTX 3080 unless they turn off ray tracing and other new graphical features. Hardware editor James and vid bud Liam will have more on this later, but for now, here’s how to avoid having the next-gen update ruin your Witcher 3 experience, and keep Roach running nice and smoothly.

Witcher 3 Next-Gen Update Includes Some Mods, Break Others

Screenshot: The Witcher 3

The good news is that The Witcher 3, already a very good-looking game, is about to get even more good-looking when its next-gen update is released. The bad news is that, for anyone playing the game on PC, loads of your favourite mods from the last seven years aren’t going to work anymore.

As CDPR explain in a blog post, “updating a game means that we change various files, so the mods that modify those exact files stop working”. And when it comes to making those updates, CDPR have prioritised changes that make the base game better, over keeping older things the same for the sake of mods.

Acknowledging that it has been six years since the last major update to the PC version of the game, though, CDPR say that’s “a long time to get used to one’s favourite mods”, and so in an effort to make “this transition to be as smooth as possible” have compiled a list of some of the community’s favourite mods, tested them and shared which ones work with the next-gen update and which ones don’t.

Some of them work! Sadly loads of them, especially the ones reliant on scripting, don’t. As CDPR say, “Because we are changing scripts in the update due to the addition of a new quest, most of the mods that are based on scripts will error out”. For mod creators concerned about this, a team of “modding experts” from CDPR will be around to “provide help and advice to modders on forums post-release when possible.”

Helping to alleviate this somewhat, though, is an accompanying announcement that the next-gen update will be shipping with some fan-made mods baked into it at launch:

Additionally, we are including several popular mods in the update (they’ll be available depending on the platform). We obtained permissions from their creators, reimbursed them, and they’ll be featured in the credits of the updated game. The mods were reworked and assets optimised as needed, and the game adjusted to run with them. There was even a case when a dev got so engrossed in tinkering when including a mod that he ended up simply remaking that particular aspect of the game. So, in a way, the game comes with some mods already included.

That’s neat! Especially the reimbursement part.

Now Playing: Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1 Official Launch Gameplay Trailer

Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1 battle pass

The Chapter 4 Season 1 battle pass contains another eight characters, V-Bucks, and dozens of other cosmetics to earn as you play through the season. Fortnite loves a crossover, and this season is no different with The Witcher’s Geralt of Rivia making his debut on the island, as is the Doomslayer from Doom. We’re actively capturing images of every battle pass reward in the game, and you can find a full rundown here.

Fortnite Chapter 4 weapons

Typically, a new chapter means a major loot pool overhaul, and that’s true again in Chapter 4 Season 1. This season, Fortnite introduces new weapons including two new shotguns–time will tell which one fans prefer You can find a full breakdown of all the new loot and weaponry right here.

Fortnite Chapter 4 map

Maybe the most exciting part of a new Fortnite chapter is the new map. The Chapter 4 map brings a complete makeover to the Fortnite landscape, including the introduction of motorcycles, but it’s not without some nods to past maps that longtime players may enjoy stumbling upon. For a full look at the new map, check here for our tour guide.

Exotic and Mythic weapons

The best guns in each season are the Exotics and Mythics. Exotics are sold by NPCs and Mythics are dropped by hostile NPCs when they’re defeated. We’re now searching the island for all of these, so you’ll find our guide here shortly.

Kinetic Ore

This new resource can be used by crafty players to get the advantage in showdowns with other players. We’re building out a complete guide on how to find and use Kinetic Ore.

Augments system

A new Fortnite perks system, called Augments, that doles out gameplay buffs is coming with Chapter 4, and we’re building out a guide to break it all down for you. Things like faster reloads, faster sprinting, and more are available, and here’s how they work.

All NPC locations

Each season of Fortnite since Chapter 2 Season 5 has introduced new NPCs, often simply called “Fortnite characters” by Epic, roaming the island, and offering goods and services to players. We’re actively tracking down all Fortnite characters in Chapter 4 Season 1 and we’ll have a full map and list here shortly.

All fish locations

Just like you can finish off your character collection book, so too can you find every fish in the game. You’ll want to do this for a few reasons, including receiving their many buffs to things like health and shields, but also to compete with your friends to catch the biggest fish. Like with NPCs, we’re looking into all the fish and will have a guide linked here as soon as we can.

Zero Week challenges

Zero Week is a fairly new way that Epic handles launch week challenges in Fortnite. Rather than wait for Thursday to arrive and kick off with the Week 1 challenges, Zero Week challenges now give players a full extra slate of major XP gains to earn. We’ll be guiding you through these as soon as the servers come online, so check back here soon.

The Witcher 3 PS5 FAQ

Below, we’ve gathered together the most frequently asked questions about The Witcher 3 PS5.

Does The Witcher 3 PS5 include all DLC and expansions?

Yes, The Witcher 3 PS5 features all of the original game’s free DLC packs, along with its two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. However, it’s unclear whether you’ll be able to access the expansions if you’re upgrading from PS4, and you don’t own them on that console. We’ve reached out to CDPR for clarification on this point.

Is The Witcher 3 PS5 a free upgrade?

Yes, The Witcher 3 PS5 is a free upgrade if you already own the game on PS4. This counts for both the original release and the Game of the Year Edition.

Will The Witcher 3 PS5 get a physical release?

Yes, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 3 PS5 will receive a physical release. However, the release date for the physical edition is currently unknown. It’s expected to release after the upgrade launches digitally, on the 14th December, 2022. We’ll update this part of the guide once we know more.

What about The Witcher 3 PS5 Trophies?

The Witcher 3 on PS5 will have its own separate Trophy list from the PS4 version, although the Trophies themselves are the same. Trophies that you already earned in the PS4 version will not automatically unlock if you transfer your save — you’ll have to earn them again on PS5 by starting a new game.

Witcher Remake Will Give It The Open World It Deserves

Image: CDPR

The recently announced remake of The Witcher is getting more than just a visual upgrade, CD Projekt Red confirmed in a new investor presentation. Instead, the first game in its critically-acclaimed adaptation of the fantasy series will get the full-blown open world treatment. That’s good news for everyone who’s been asking for exactly that ever since The Witcher 3 blew fans away with its free-roaming map back in 2015.

Teased back in October, project Canis Majoris was later revealed as a remake of CDPR’s 2007 debut using Unreal Engine 5. Unlike the level-based original, however, the company confirmed on Monday that the new version will be a “story-driven, single player open-world RPG” and a “modern reimagining.” Buzzwords aside, it seems to strongly imply that the ground-up remake will ditch many of the archaic systems that held the original back.

While there is plenty about The Witcher 1 to celebrate, including its characters and story, it remains an extremely acquired taste when it comes to actually playing. The original was built in BioWare’s Aurora Engine, an updated version of what was used to make the Baldur’s Gate games, and while it certainly makes the original Witcher a classic among diehard CRPG fans, it’s not nearly as immersive or cinematic as what players have come to expect from the later games.

It was also pretty linear, and didn’t have any of that sense of exploration that made players feel as if they were accidently happening upon a mysterious but meaty side quest, something that The Witcher 3 excelled at. This is why there have been no shortage of ambitious fan mods aimed at rebuilding the game inside The Witcher 3’s engine. With CDPR working alongside Epic Games to add deeper open world development functionality to UE5, the results will no doubt be even better for the remake.

Production on the remake is being handled by a new Polish studio called Fool’s Theory that contains some ex-CDPR devs who previously worked on the series. The good news is that it seemingly won’t distract too much from CDPR’s own work on a completely new open world Witcher game. The bad news is that the remake is only in early production and likely still many years away.

My own personal pipe dream is that The Witcher 2 will also get remastered in some way, and that the entire trilogy will be able to live on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in some way, allowing players to carry their save date and narrative choices over between all three games. That seems extremely unlikely, and if it does happen it probably won’t be until the next the PS6 is out.
