Inside Gwyneth Paltrow And Winona Ryder’s Longtime Feud

At one point in time, actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder were practically inseparable.

The two were constantly spotted out together during the late 90s, which was the height of both of their careers.

For Ryder, she had gained notoriety for her roles in “Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands,” and “Little Women,” while Paltrow had recently starred in the films “Se7en” and “Emma.”

On top of that, both women had been dating best friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and Paltrow was even the one who’d introduced Ryder to Damon.

The two stars were allegedly roommates at one point and were always spotted out attending glamorous Hollywood events together, though their friendship quickly turned sour due to a movie role.

Why did Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder fall out?

The two icons allegedly came to a bitter halt in their friendship in the late 90s and haven’t been the same since.

Gwyneth Paltrow allegedly stole a script from Winona Ryder’s home — igniting their feud.

It all started after Paltrow visited Ryder at her home in San Francisco and saw the script for “Shakespeare in Love,” which immediately piqued her interest.

Paltrow reportedly read the script for the 1998 film and instantly fell in love with the leading role of Viola de Lesseps.

The “Iron Man” actress didn’t waste any time calling her agent to book an audition, despite Ryder vying for the same role due to her having the script.

Of course, that caused a major conflict in Paltrow and Ryder’s friendship.

It was made worse after Paltrow was not only cast in the 1998 romantic period comedy-drama film; but also received the Oscar win for Best Actress in a Leading Role the following year.

Despite the rumors that Paltrow swiped the script from Ryder’s home and stole the part, the “Sliding Doors” actress has denied doing such a thing in the past.

Paltrow accused Ryder of making up ‘lies’ about her.

During a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, Paltrow claimed the allegations were an “urban myth.”

“I swear to God I did not, I’m raising my right hand on the Bible. I swear to God,” she said, adding that she hadn’t seen or spoken to Ryder in years.

She further claimed that Ryder’s “jealousy” had led the “Stranger Things” actress to “make up lies” about their friendship and subsequent ending.

Paltrow had previously hinted at a feud between her and Ryder.

Despite Paltrow vehemently denying that she had any part in Ryder not securing the lead role in “Shakespeare in Love,” she once alluded to feuding with Ryder in 2009.

In a Goop newsletter post titled “Evil Tongue and Living in Negativity,” Paltrow referred to a “frenemy” she once had who was “hell-bent on taking me down.”

“This person really did what they could to hurt me,” she wrote, according to Access.

“I was deeply upset, I was angry, I was all of those things you feel when you find out that someone you thought you liked was venomous and dangerous.”

She continued, “I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and…happiness. There went the high road.”

While Paltrow didn’t explicitly name Ryder in the 2009 post, many people believed she was talking about her former friend, especially after writing about an “unfortunate” incident happening to the unnamed person.

Many believed that Paltrow had made an indiscreet reference to Ryder’s arrest in Beverly Hills in 2001 because of shoplifting.

At the time, the actress was accused of stealing $5,500 worth of designer clothes and accessories at a department store, where she was later convicted of grand theft, shoplifting, and vandalism.

In December 2002, Ryder was sentenced to three years of probation, 480 hours of community service, $3,700 in fines, and $6,355 in restitution to the Saks Fifth Avenue store.

Winona Ryder reflects on her breakup from Johnny Depp during the ’90s: ‘My ‘Girl, Interrupted’ real life’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Winona Ryder is looking back at her relationship with Johnny Depp.

The pair began dating after meeting at the New York premiere of “Great Balls of Fire!” in 1989. They went on their first date two months later. Then five months after the first date, the two Hollywood stars got engaged. They appeared in the 1990 film “Edward Scissorhands” and Depp even got a tattoo that read “Winona Forever.”

But in June 1993, the couple called it quits. Depp famously altered his body art to “Wino Forever.”

Ryder, who is on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar’s July 2022 digital issue, called their breakup and the Hollywood culture at the time “my ‘Girl, interrupted’ real life,” referring to her 1999 movie about mental health struggles.

The 50-year-old told the outlet that an “incredible” therapist suggested she try picturing her younger self and being kinder to her.

“I remember, I was playing this character who ends up getting tortured in a Chilean prison [for the 1994 film ‘The House of the Spirits’],” she recalled. “I would look at these fake bruises and cuts on my face [from the shoot], and I would struggle to see myself as this little girl. ‘Would you be treating this girl like you’re treating yourself?’ I remember looking at myself and saying, ‘This is what I’m doing to myself inside.’ Because I just wasn’t taking care of myself.”

“I’ve never talked about it,” Ryder admitted. “There’s this part of me that’s very private. I have such, like, a place in my heart for those days. But for someone younger who grew up with social media, it’s hard to describe.”

Ryder also noted that she “definitely retreated” from the tabloids in the early 2000s.

“I was in San Francisco,” she told the outlet. “But I also wasn’t getting offers. I think it was a very mutual break. It’s so interesting when you look at the early aughts. It was a kind of cruel time. There was a lot of meanness out there… And then I remember coming back to LA and – it was a rough time. And I didn’t know if that part of my life was over.”

In 2016, Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard got a domestic violence restraining order against the actor amid their divorce. Ryder, who is known for keeping mum about her personal life, told Time magazine that Depp was never abusive toward her during their relationship, which had ended decades prior. Depp, now 59, has long denied the allegations.

“I can only speak from my own experience, which was wildly different than what is being said,” Ryder explained at the time. “He was never, never that way toward me. Never abusive at all toward me. I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy who is very, very protective of the people that he loves.”

“I wasn’t there. I don’t know what happened. I’m not calling anyone a liar,” Ryder continued. “I’m just saying, it’s difficult and upsetting for me to wrap my head around it. Look, it was a long time ago, but we were together for four years, and it was a big relationship for me. Imagine if someone you dated when you were – I was 17 when I met him – was accused of that. It’s just shocking. I have never seen him be violent toward a person before.”

Ryder also described being “depressed” and “going through something” during the 1990s, around the time that she and Depp broke up.

“You can’t look to the industry to validate you as a person because that can just lead to incredible disappointment. I will admit I was guilty of that when I was younger because you get caught up in it, surrounded by people that are telling you that it’s the most important thing, and you’re young and you believe it.”

Winona Ryder Thriller Fizzles Out

The Cow offers a solid initial horror premise, but the mystery takes nonsensical routes that ultimately don’t work. Co-writer/director Eli Horowitz and co-writer Matthew Derby are a bit too on-the-nose for their own good. The Cow is the type of thriller that believes itself to be much smarter than it is, as the audience is always two steps ahead of the narrative’s reveals.

Eli Horowitz’s ‘The Cow’ is a mystery thriller

Winona Ryder as Kath | SXSW

Kath (Winona Ryder) drives to a remote cabin in the redwoods along with her boyfriend. However, they immediately discover that a mysterious younger couple is already in the cabin. It turns out that the rental was double-booked, but it’s already dark outside and there isn’t any cell phone reception. As a result, they decide to share the cabin for just one night.

The Cow picks up the next morning, where Kath wakes up in bed alone. Her boyfriend simply vanished along with the young woman from the other couple. She becomes desperate to find out what happened and why her boyfriend would break up with her in this fashion. However, she would never guess the truth in her wildest dreams.

A film about time and adventure

The characters in The Cow constantly talk about adventure and taking chances in life. Kath and her boyfriend’s age gap plays into this, as they try to operate on the same level. Each time they hesitate to do something risky, such as play a romantic board game with the strangers they just met, they ask one another if it’s “too much adventure” for them. They both have something to prove to one another.

Horowitz tells the story in a non-linear fashion. The Cow jumps back and forth in time, progressively feeding more of the story to the audience. They provide context to their relationship and the sudden strange sequence of events. Kath follows a trail of clues, wanting to finally confront her now-ex boyfriend about his immature and cruel way of ending the relationship.

The Cow provides social commentary on both age and time. Multiple character dynamics and their interactions lend to these two topics. Time plays into each of the characters’ lives in varying ways, but it’s the obstacle itself that they all have in common. Time isn’t on their side and they’re all desperate for answers.

‘The Cow’ flatlines with a serious lack of thrills

Kath and her boyfriend arrive at the cabin at night when it’s already dark outside. As a result, Horowitz provides an eerie atmosphere, where the redwoods aren’t even visible. The cabin is the only visible space, creating a claustrophobic tone that traps the audience into the frame. Unfortunately, he doesn’t take advantage of this beyond the first act.

The Cow makes the mistake of focusing on the past in its non-linear storytelling. The cabin provides the most gripping element of the film, but once the narrative takes the characters out of the area, the film loses its initial tension. Horowitz gives too much away early on, making the story’s big revelation fairly obvious fairly quickly.

There’s a significantly better film buried here. The first act establishes an intriguing premise that truly could go anywhere. However, it opts for the thriller mystery elements, rather than the clear horror story that is much more compelling. The Cow begins to flatline when the first discovery is unveiled and never manages to recover.
