R.I.P. Adam Rich, former child star of Eight Is Enough

Adam Rich, the former child star who played youngest sibling Nicholas Bradford on the ’70s sitcom Eight Is Enough, died at his home on Saturday, per the Associated Press. He was 54 years old.

Best known for his role on ABC’s Eight Is Enough, Rich also made appearances on other television series throughout the ’80s and ’90s, including The Love Boat, The Six Million Dollar Man, St. Elsewhere, and Baywatch. His last major role occurred in 2003, when he played himself in the David Spade comedy Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.

Rich suffered from addiction issues that contributed to legal trouble over the years, including an arrest in 1991 for attempting to break into a pharmacy, per the AP. He was open about his experiences with mental illness; publicist Danny Deraney told the outlet that the actor’s depression “defied treatment.”

“Adam was simply a wonderful guy. He was kind, generous and a warrior in the fight against mental illness,” Deraney shared in a statement posted to Twitter. “Adam did not have an ounce of ego. He was unselfish and always looked out for those he cared about. Which is why many people who grew up with him feel a part of their childhood gone, and sad today. He really was Americas Little Brother.”

Rich’s television brother Willie Aames posted his own remembrance to Facebook (per People), writing, “This morning [my wife] Winnie woke me with the heartbreaking news of Adam Rich’s passing. I’m gutted. Adam was more than a colleague. He was very much my only little brother. A lifelong friend.”

“These last few years Adam had dreams of renewing his career. He was one of those kid actors that our generation will always remember. I can’t tell you how many parents have told me they named their first child ‘Nicolas’ after his Eight Is Enough character,” Aames wrote. “The diminishing fraternity of kids that grew up in the golden years of family television has lost another of our own. I will miss him deeply. Rest ‘A.R.’ You were the cutest TV kid of them all.”

Betty Buckley, who played the Bradfords’ stepmother on Eight Is Enough, also posted a tribute to her co-star. “Adam Rich was a light and my young pal for the four seasons I was blessed to work with him on Eight Is Enough. I adored him and loved working with him in our scenes together on the show. He was so sweet, funny, fresh and natural,” she shared in an Instagram post.

“He brought a lot of joy to all of us on the show and to our audiences,” Buckley continued. “Adam and I have remained friends all of these years. His love and support have always meant a lot to me. I am shocked by the news I received this morning of his death. Sending my love and deepest condolences to his friends and family. In recent years Adam dedicated himself to providing inspiration for others with mental and emotional illness. I will miss him greatly.”

‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey’ Trailer Turns Pooh and Piglet into Slasher Movie Maniacs!

The indie horror movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey is set to be a dark retelling of the classic Winnie the Pooh story, reimagining the beloved characters as murderous slasher maniacs. Rhys Frake-Waterfield directed the upcoming horror movie, and today Jagged Edge Productions has unleashed the official trailer for Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey!

In this version of the classic story, Christopher Robin is headed off to college and he has abandoned his old friends, which then leads to the duo embracing their inner monsters.

Watch the bloody Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey trailer below!

“Christopher Robin is pulled away from them, and he’s not [given] them food, it’s made Pooh and Piglet’s life quite difficult,” Waterfield recently told Variety, detailing the plot.

Because they’ve had to fend for themselves so much, they’ve essentially become feral,” the filmmaker continued. “So they’ve gone back to their animal roots. They’re no longer tame: they’re like a vicious bear and pig who want to go around and try and find prey.”

Waterfield also noted in his chat with Variety that while Tigger and Eeyore won’t appear in the movie due to copyright issues, the story in his mind is that Pooh and Piglet got so hungry they ate Eeyore somewhere along the way. Yeah, it’s that kind of movie.

The film from Jagged Edge Productions is set to be distributed by ITN Studios sometime later this year, and you can learn more about the attention-grabbing project over on Variety.

Amber Doig-Thorne, Maria Taylor, and Danielle Scott star in the horror movie, which is possible thanks to the original story slipping into the public domain. What a time to be alive!

Robot Shatters World Record by Jumping Over 100 Feet in the Air

Since many robots are more durable and expendable than human beings, researchers have experimented with alternate means of getting around that outperform walking around on two legs, including a new bot that can jump to staggering heights and distances from a standing start.

Most robotics research goes into creating automatons that can take over monotonous or dangerous jobs from humans. It’s why robot arms have been used in factories for decades, and why Boston Dynamics’ robotic Spot dog has taken over the night shift at Pompeii, protecting the remains of the city from thieves. But robots can also be engineered to outperform humans in many tasks through various mechanisms like gears, ratchets, and pulleys that can amplify their strength or power—something biological muscles aren’t capable of.

Researchers from the Hawkes Lab at UC Santa Barbara realized that most artificial jumping robots were based on designs from nature where animals like kangaroos, frogs, and grasshoppers have specialized anatomies that exhibit incredible jumping abilities. At the same time, the power these animals can put into a single leap is limited by how much energy can be exerted from a single muscle movement. Unlike superheroes, biological creatures can’t dramatically crouch down, build up energy, and then blast off into the sky. But robots can.

Although it’s tragically lacking a cool name, the UC Santa Barbara researchers have developed a simple robot that uses a mechanical advantage known as “work multiplication.” A tiny motor is paired with much larger springs made of carbon fiber strips that act like an archer’s bow. As the motor slowly reels in a strong filament, the bows are compressed and squished while at the same time a series of rubber bands wrapped around the bows are stretched, adding even more power while also increasing the strength of the carbon fiber so that it doesn’t break.

The robot’s jumping performance is believed to have reached the maximum possible performance of the materials used. When the tension in the bows is released, the robot accelerates from 0 to 60MPH in just nine milliseconds, exerting an acceleration force of 315g (most humans can’t endure more than 9gs) and leaping to a height of almost 100-feet. As the bows straighten out and release their energy, they also transform the robot’s shape into a sleek aerodynamic arrow improving its speed, but since it’s so lightweight, it falls back to Earth afterward without destroying itself in the process.

Are there practical applications to a robot that can easily outjump Winnie the Pooh’s Tigger? Simply leaping over rough terrain and obstacles is a lot easier for a robot than trying to roll or walk across it, and the robot’s abilities would be further improved if deployed on other moons and planets with less gravity than Earth’s. The researchers estimate the robot in its current form could reach heights of over 400 feet and clear distances of half a kilometer on the moon thanks to the reduced gravity and lack of atmosphere. It could capture similar imagery during a leap as the flying Ingenuity probe currently does on Mars, but without the weight and complexity of a helicopter that needs to land as softly as it takes off.
