Michigan vs. Purdue score, takeaways: Wolverines clinch top-two CFP spot, win second straight Big Ten title

No. 2 Michigan clinched its second consecutive Big Ten championship and a top-two spot in the College Football Playoff with a 43-22 victory over Purdue in the Big Ten Championship Game. The Boilermakers and their dynamic offense ran nearly twice as ma ny plays as the Wolverines, but Michigan made critical stops to come away with their second conference title under coach Jim Harbaugh.

Quarterback J.J. McCarthy couldn’t quite match his productivity from the team’s regular-season finale over Ohio State, but he threw three touchdowns in just 17 pass attempts as the Wolverines outscored Purdue 29-9 in the second half to continue their impressive run of closing efforts. Running back Donovan Edwards added 185 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Purdue quarterback Aidan O’Connell played a strong game, but two backbreaking interceptions cost the Boilermakers during a key second-half run. The first came in the third quarter when O’Connell killed a drive in the red zone with an interception to Michigan’s Will Johnson. Three drives later, with Purdue down just nine points, O’Connell threw another pick within his own 20-yard line to set up an easy touchdown toss from McCarthy to receiver Ronnie Bell to push Michigan’s lead out to three scores.

Michigan is one of the last two undefeated programs standing along with Georgia. The Bulldogs and Wolverines should easily slot in at No. 1 and 2, respectively, after becoming the only top-five teams to win conference championships. Now, all eyes switch to the Gaylord Texan Hotel in Grapevine as the College Football playoff committee decides Michigan’s eventual destination.

Wasted opportunities

This Big Ten Championship Game was no coronation like Iowa’s 42-3 baptism against the Wolverines in 2021. Instead, Purdue played almost the perfect football game to beat Michigan but whiffed on some big chances in key spots.

Purdue put together six drives of at least eight plays, an impressive achievement against Michigan’s physical defense. However, only one of the Boilermaker’s drives ended in a touchdown: the second drive of the game. Purdue settled for five field goals, including three of 35 yards or fewer. Michigan responded by scoring on all four trips to the red zone. The gap effectively decided the game.

Donovan Edwards continues to emerge

Michigan running back Donovan Edwards missed part of the season with injuries and played second-fiddle to Blake Corum. But in two games with Corum out of the lineup, Edwards has proved definitively that he can be a workhorse running back for one of the best teams in the nation.

Over the last two games against Ohio State and Purdue, Edwards has run for 401 yards and three touchdowns on just 47 carries while breaking off runs of 85 and 60 yards to swing games and lay knockout blows. Edwards has emerged as a legitimate weapon for Michigan’s offense and ensured the Wolverines that losing Corum isn’t a devastating blow.

McCarthy stays solid

Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy put together an incredible performance against Ohio State. While his numbers weren’t quite as lofty in the Big Ten title win, McCarthy’s performance was critical in keeping Purdue on its toes during a competitive first half.

McCarthy completed 11 of his 17 passes for 161 yards and three touchdowns in the win. He found Ronnie Bell five times for 67 yards and once again extended plays with his feet. Michigan has run the ball at a high level for two years, but McCarthy’s playmaking ability is the wild-card factor that the Wolverines have been waiting for as they await a potential national championship showdown against Georgia.

Charlie Jones should be recognized as elite

Purdue wide receiver Charlie Jones was a little-used bit player at Iowa, but the Big Ten title game should be on repeat for NFL scouts. Jones was unbelievable, catching 13 passes for 165 yards and tripling his nearest teammate in receiving. Every time Purdue needed a big play, Jones managed to complete acrobatic catches around aggressive Michigan defensive backs. Jones will finish with nearly 1,400 yards receiving in a sensational senior season. Not many receivers nationally can boast 100-yard receiving games against Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin and Penn State.

Watching The Game Awards (Ugh) Might Win You A Free Steam Deck

Image: Valve / Kotaku

If you’ve been wanting Valve’s portable PC console, the Steam Deck, but lack the spare cash, Valve will be giving away a ton of them for free during next week’s annual broadcast of The Game Awards. All you have to do is watch The Game Awards through Valve’s streaming site. Oh, yeah: Remember when Valve launched a streaming site?

Yes, the annual montage of trailers and ads dressed up as a gaming show in a desperate effort to hide its true nature is back. The “award show” will air on December 8 to toss out a few awards as quickly as possible between dozens of trailers, ads, and commercials for DLC and expansion passes. But if you decide to watch the whole thing this year—which can often run nearly three hours—you might at least be able to win a Steam Deck for your troubles.

As announced November 30, Valve is celebrating The Game Awards with a massive Steam Deck giveaway. The company will be giving out a free handheld PC to a single person every minute for the entire run of The Game Awards. (Never in history has someone wanted The Game Awards to run long, until now…) To have a chance, you’ll need to first register for the drawing, which you can do now, then watch The Game Awards via Valve’s Steam.TV website.

What’s that, you ask? It’s a half-baked Steam-ified take on Twitch that the company basically abandoned not long after launch. But like so many Valve products it lingers on, like a zombie.

As with any giveaway or contest of this nature, it has some extra rules and restrictions to be aware of, such that it’s only open to folks in the United States, Canada, the UK, or the EU. You also need to have bought something on Steam in the last 12 months, and your account must be in good standing. If you check all those boxes you can register now at this link. And when you register, you also get a cute animated Steam Deck emoji sticker. So really, aren’t we all winners in the end?

Well, I guess you’ll be less of a winner if you have to sit through The Game Awards.

Germany out of World Cup despite 4-2 win over Costa Rica

AL KHOR, Qatar (AP) — Back-to-back early exits at the World Cup have Germany coach Hansi Flick wanting to go back to basics.

The four-time champions were again eliminated from the group stage, four years after their embarrassing display as defending champions in Russia.

Something has to change, Flick said after a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica on Thursday that still wasn’t enough to secure a spot in the round of 16.

“I believe for the future of German football we need to do things differently in training,” said Flick, who took over as coach after last year’s European Championship. “For years we are talking about new goalkeepers and wingbacks, but Germany was always able to defend well. We need the basics.

“For the future, for the next 10 years, it is very important to focus on the new generation of players.”

It was only eight years ago that Germany won its fourth World Cup title, beating an Argentina team led by Lionel Messi in his prime in the final at the Maracana Stadium. With that victory, Germany became the only European team to win a World Cup in either North or South America.

In Qatar, it was an opening loss to Japan that set the stage for the disappointing finish this time. Germany was beaten 2-1 in that match last week, and followed it with a 1-1 draw against Spain.

That gave the Germans a chance in its last match at Al Bayt Stadium, and for a few minutes during the simultaneous final group matches on Thursday, it was enough. At halftime, for example, Germany was beating Costa Rica and Japan was losing to Spain — results that would have put the Germans into the round of 16.

It was Japan’s 2-1 victory over the Spaniards that essentially cost the Germans a chance to play at least one more match in Qatar.

Flick cited Spain as an example for his country to follow.

“Spain is very good in defense,” he said, even though the 2010 World Cup champions ultimately lost to Japan at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha. “It focuses on training young players. They know the tactics well.”

It all started so well for Germany on Thursday with Serge Gnabry scoring a 10th-minute header and Spain taking an early lead against Japan.

Both matches were turned upside down in the second half.

Yeltsin Tejeda evened the score in the 58th minute and Juan Vargas scrambled another in the 70th, putting Costa Rica ahead 2-1 and all of a sudden on target to advance.

“There were a lot of individual mistakes and these are things that make me very angry,” Flick said.

But Germany substitute Kai Havertz made it 2-2 in the 73rd minute and then restored Germany’s lead in the 85th. Another substitute, Niclas Füllkrug, added the fourth.

Costa Rica had lost its opening game against Spain 7-0. The team then put on a much better display and beat Japan 1-0.

“We are not what we saw in our first game,” Costa Rica coach Luis Fernando Suarez said. “We had to go back to what made us qualify for the World Cup.”

HISTORY MADE

The match was also notable because French referee Stéphanie Frappart became the first woman to officiate a men’s World Cup match.

RECORD SET

Manuel Neuer played in his 19th World Cup match to set a record for a goalkeeper — overtaking German great Sepp Maier and Brazil keeper Cláudio Taffarel.

GINTER’S WAIT

Matthias Ginter was participating in his third World Cup, but going into the match against Costa Rica he had yet to play a single minute at any of those tournaments. That all changed when he came on as a substitute in the 89th minute.

USA’s win over Iran caps off tense week

DOHA, Qatar — On Monday, United States men’s national team manager Gregg Berhalter was asked to be, among other things, an economist, a customs agent, an expert on military policy and a United Nations ambassador.

On Tuesday, he finally got to be what he most wanted: a coach who has taken his team to the knockout rounds of the World Cup.

After the USA held off Iran 1-0 at Al Thumama Stadium, Berhalter embraced his coaching staff in a group bear hug in the technical area, their arms wrapped tightly around one another’s shoulders as they bounced up and down. He then jogged out onto the field to bask in the celebration with his players and the raucous contingent of American fans behind the goal.

Four years after taking over a program in disarray, Berhalter had brought the US through what is, by some distance, the biggest win of his career.

“It’s the first time in 92 years that we’ve had two shutouts at a World Cup,” Berhalter said later, his face flushed. “So, the boys are doing something right.”

It was a remarkable 24 hours for Berhalter, the type of incredible juxtaposition that can exist only in international soccer — and only with a matchup like the one the US had against Iran, a country whose history, both on its own and with the United States, is deep and complicated and messy.

That history is what fueled the build-up. The U.S. Soccer Federation played no small part in the uncomfortableness ahead of the game, as it — without the knowledge of Berhalter or his players — posted images to social media that showed Iran’s flag without the Islamic Republic logo in an attempt to show support for women in Iran who are fighting for the most basic human rights.

Well intentioned as it might have been, it nonetheless created a firestorm, and Berhalter was left to navigate it. At his news conference Monday, Iranian journalists volleyed harsh questions at him, asking him to explain why inflation might contribute to a lack of popularity for his team back home or to justify the various visa requirements that the United States has for Iranians who might want to travel there. There was a question about US warships in the region.

It was, by any measure, bizarre, but Berhalter — to his credit — handled it deftly. He apologized for any offense the social media posts might have caused while expressing support for those who are fighting for a better life. He also did his best to push the focus back to soccer. In many ways, this match was judgment day for Berhalter and his players at the end of a four-year resurrection, and Berhalter needed to do whatever he could to make sure his players were up for it.

In short, they were. Castigating Berhalter is a bit of a cottage industry in the circles of those who follow the US team closely — such is life as an international manager, really — but this much is sure: Berhalter has won a Gold Cup and a Nations League. He has beaten Mexico three times (including in World Cup qualifying). He has overseen a complete roster overhaul of young and talented international players, made tough — and in some cases stunning — choices about who to bring to Qatar and has now led that squad to the Round of 16 in the World Cup.

Is he perfect? He’s not. There are still reasonable criticisms to be made of his tactics or substitution patterns, but forward Joshua Sargent was called back in and delivered a strong performance against Iran, as did defender Cameron Carter-Vickers (who came in for Walker Zimmerman). Tim Ream, a surprising late add to the roster just before the World Cup, was stout in defense as well. However stressful it might have been, the USA was able to see out its lead late.

Even more, Berhalter motivated his players, pushing them to meet the moment. Berhalter recalled earlier in the week how he’d watched the US lose to Iran in the infamous 1998 World Cup meeting, and he highlighted how what stood out to him was the mismatch in emotional levels on the field. The Iranians wanted the game so badly, Berhalter said, and it was clear the Americans were nowhere near the same type of feeling.

On Tuesday, that wasn’t an issue. Not even close. There was fire, sure. But also a confidence that the moment wasn’t too big.

“There was a calmness about the team,” Ream said. “No one was breathing heavy or had panic in their eyes.”

It helped that the tactics were in place, too. Christian Pulisic’s goal was a result of a sequence that Ream said Berhalter and the coaches had specifically emphasized in their scouting, a pulling of the play far to one side in order to expose the back post for Pulisic to attack. The goal was, as Ream said, “perfect, perfect, perfect,” save for Pulisic’s collision with the Iranian goalkeeper that sent Pulisic to the hospital in the middle of the game for an abdominal scan.

Steve Nicol and Craig Burley preview the United States’ round of 16 tie against the Netherlands in the World Cup.

If Pulisic can’t play against the Netherlands on Saturday (or is limited), it will be another bump for Berhalter to navigate. He has options — Giovanni Reyna still hasn’t featured much, and Brenden Aaronson is a lively substitute — but, either way, motivation for the group will be crucial again.

That is what Berhalter wants. He has never shied away from the stakes of his mission. He has said, over and over, that this team’s goal is to change the perception of American soccer around the world. The game against England helped that. So, too, did Tuesday.

Now comes another opportunity. Another chance. Berhalter will endure the arrows; all coaches do. He will shoulder the critiques. All he cares about is getting his players to see what he sees, to know what he knows: That this team can do anything. On Tuesday, after the hugging and the shouting and the video call to the hospital so Pulisic could join in the fun, Berhalter came to another, more traditional news conference, and reflected on what pleased him the most about the night.

“We believed in ourselves,” he said. “We believed in what we were doing.”

McDonald’s is giving people the chance to win a ‘McGold Card’ — free food for life

For the holidays, McDonald’s is giving away free meals for life. Well, sort of. (Justin Sullivan, Getty Images)

Estimated read time: 2-3 minutes

ATLANTA — For the holidays, McDonald’s is giving away free meals for life. Well, sort of.

Beginning Dec. 5, every order completed in the McDonald’s app for at least $1 will enter customers into a contest to win a McGold Card. Three winners will get a special card that earns them free McDonald’s for life. Plus, each winner will get three extra cards to give away for a total of 12 cards being won.

The McGold Card has been around for years, with some heavy hitters reportedly holding them, including Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and actor Rob Lowe. In 2018, McDonald’s issued a few gold cards during a contest, but the winner was eligible to get “only” two free meals a week for 50 years. That rule applies to this year’s promotion too, which ends on Dec. 25.

“Our fans have been fascinated by the lore of the McGold Card and if it really exists. And now, we’ll make this McDonald’s legend a reality for our fans by giving them the ultimate holiday gift — a chance to win a card and then share access to it with three of their family or friends,” said Tariq Hassan, McDonald’s USA chief marketing officer in a release.

McDonald’s is enticing people to enter with three weeks of food deals and merchandise, including Chicken McNugget stockings and a AM Wrapper Hoodie in Egg McMuffin or cheeseburger prints.

The deals, which vary by day, include buy-one-get-one-free Big Mac sandwiches, free six-piece nuggets with a $1 purchase and 50-cent double cheeseburger. it’s the third year that McDonald’s has rolled out a December promotion, with last year’s promoted by Mariah Carey.

The annual promotion uses existing ingredients or menu items — creating buzz without adding much extra work for employees. It also entices people to come in and likely spend more than the $1 required to get the free food.

McDonald’s recently reported strong earnings, partially buoyed by deals like these. In the third quarter, sales at McDonald’s U.S. stores open at least 13 months grew 6.1%.

The chain is “positioned as the leading brand in terms of value for money and affordability,” said its CFO Ian Borden in an analyst call last month. He noted that some cash-strapped customers are shifting from buying meals to purchasing value items.

World Cup 2022: Scenarios, standings, tiebreakers as USA face Iran in Group B and Netherlands win Group A

Getty Images

We’re reaching the business end of the World Cup group stage as some of the groups only have one match remaining. So far, France, Portugal, and Brazil are joined by Group A’s Netherlands and Senegal as the teams to book their passage to the round of 16 but more will join them on the final matchday of each group. Qatar have also joined South Africa as the only World Cup hosts to ever fail to make it out of the group stage. But let’s take a look at who can join the trio in the last 16 and what their path is to get there.

Looking at tiebreakers, the start is simple with the team that has the most points advancing. If two teams are level on points then it will go to their overall goal difference. If they still can’t be split, next up the team that has scored the most goals will be the side to advance. The rules will then be reapplied with only the head-to-head match between the two teams that are tied. So the point total in those matches is next followed by goal difference in head-to-head play and goals scored. If they make it the entire way through and can’t be split it finally goes to the fair play system.

Get Your Daily World Cup Fix. Sign up for our new newsletter covering the beautiful game in all its glory, including daily updates about the World Cup, here.

The fair play system will see the team with the fewest penalties in matches advance. So a team loses a point per yellow card, three points for each red card caused by a second yellow card, four points for a straight red card and if a yellow is followed by a straight red card it will count as five points.

What We Learned from Steelers’ win over Colts on Monday

FULL BOX SCORE

  1. Kenny Pickett is starting to figure it out. The rookie isn’t lighting up the stat sheet, nor is he compiling a highlight reel for the ages, but with each week, Pickett is taking positive steps toward becoming a quality NFL quarterback. He completed 20 of 28 passes for 174 yards and a passer rating of 87.5, but it wasn’t about the numbers Monday night. Pickett looked composed, decisive and made the plays necessary to keep scoring drives going. What was most impressive was how Pickett navigated the pocket, escaped when necessary, and consistently found targets downfield for important completions. It’s not as if he’s playing behind a steel wall — Yannick Ngakoue had a short outburst of sacks that exposed Pittsburgh’s inconsistencies up front — but Pickett’s mobility and athleticism are precisely what a young quarterback needs to overcome a lack of reliable protection. Again, his numbers aren’t gaudy and won’t win any awards, but those who watched the game Monday night will likely agree: Pickett went out and won the game (with the help of a number of teammates).
  2. The Steelers have their connection of the future. Pickett and George Pickens are going to rack up a whole lot of yards in Pittsburgh in the years ahead. Monday night stands as proof of their potential, which finished at just three completions for 57 yards, but it was so much more than that. Pickett’s 35-yard pass to Pickens in the first half required the rookie receiver’s latest highlight-reel grab, and also set up the Steelers for their first touchdown of the night. The most important connection won’t make the highlight reel, but helped the Steelers score their decisive fourth-quarter touchdown, thanks to a third-and-9 completion in which Pickett slid left to avoid pressure, flipped his hips forward and threw a perfectly placed pass to Pickett, who made an excellent diving grab to pick up 13 yards and a fresh set of downs. Eight plays later, Benny Snell scored from 2 yards out to give Pittsburgh a 24-17 lead, made official only after — you guessed it — Pickett scrambled and found Pickens in the corner of the end zone for the two-point conversion. The volume will increase in the future, but it’s already obvious these two have a special connection.
  3. Indianapolis’ offensive issues rear their ugly head. We can admit Matt Ryan looks past his prime when it comes to processing and delivering passes under pressure, and the Colts’ current offensive line isn’t helping matters. Ryan appears visibly uncomfortable when dropping to pass, which interrupts his decision-making (including in the crucial split-second in which he could deliver a pass instead of taking a sack) and leads to sacks. Pittsburgh recorded three of them Monday night, and nearly forced a turnover when one sack produced a Ryan fumble. While we’re on that topic, a fumble on the goal line — it was likely Jonathan Taylor’s fault, even if the official scorer pinned it on Ryan — robbed the Colts of their second-best scoring opportunity of the night. Those errors are guaranteed to be costly, and for a team like the Colts that is struggling mightily to produce over four quarters, they simply can’t afford to make these mistakes. Add in Ryan’s interception early in the game and you have a combination of blunders that proved to be the difference against a team the Colts certainly could have defeated, but didn’t.
  4. Jeff Saturday shows his inexperience on the national stage. The Colts’ stunning hire started his head coaching career with a feel-good win over the Raiders, but two straight narrow losses have all but wiped that game from our memories. Saturday didn’t help himself in the final minutes of Monday night’s game, keeping two of his three timeouts in his pocket as the Colts were frantically attempting to score a game-tying touchdown. As the clock ticked down inside a minute, it seemed plainly obvious Saturday should call a timeout before a pivotal third-and-short. Instead, he and Ryan let the clock run to 34 seconds before handing off to Taylor on an inside run the entire national audience saw coming. The timeout that followed didn’t produce a quality play, as Ryan bailed out of the pocket before desperately throwing a pass to Parris Campbell in double coverage, which fell incomplete and sealed the win for Pittsburgh. Saturday could have burned just one more timeout to gather his team’s offense, which didn’t look organized for much of the night. Instead, he’ll keep them as souvenirs, perhaps as a reminder of how useful they can be in key moments.
  5. Pittsburgh’s future beyond 2022 is exciting. The Steelers’ defense has become an opportunistic one in recent weeks, which held true Monday night in the form of two takeaways. The defense has deserved most of the credit for the fact the Steelers aren’t worse at this point. But Monday night gave us a glimpse of what their future might look like if Pickett pans out. Pickens is going to be a star, Diontae Johnson is under contract and Najee Harris, Anthony McFarland, Benny Snell and Jaylen Warren make up a hard-nosed backfield. They just need to improve their offensive line and tab replacements for veterans who might be headed elsewhere (or to retirement) in the years ahead. Once again, the Steelers are doing it the right way, and their rebuild won’t take long before it starts producing a winner once again.

Next Gen stat of the game: George Pickens’ 35-yard reception in the second quarter had a completion probability of just 23.9%, the third-least likely completion for the Steelers this season. Pickens owns two of the Steelers’ top three least likely receptions in 2022.

NFL Research: After tallying nine giveaways in his first five games, Kenny Pickett has cleaned things up. Monday marked his third straight game without a giveaway, which was also Pittsburgh’s first win on the road since Week 1 (at Cincinnati).

NFL Week 12 grades: Eagles earn an ‘A-‘ for Sunday night win; Tom Brady’s Buccaneers get a ‘D’ for OT loss

After giving us three crazy games on Thanksgiving, the NFL might have topped itself on Sunday with several wild games that went down to the wire.

In Cleveland, Tom Brady suffered a loss for the first time in his career in a game where his team was leading by seven or more points in the final two minutes of regulation. Before Sunday, Brady had been 218-0 in those situations, but that streak is now over after Brady watched his team blow a 17-10 lead in a 23-17 overtime loss to the Browns.

In Jacksonville, the Jaguars pulled off the most surprising comeback of the day and that’s because the Jaguars aren’t really known for coming back on anyone. Before Sunday, the Jags had lost 162 straight games since 2000 when trailing by seven in the final two minutes of regulation, but that streak ended after Trevor Lawrence led the Jags to a wild 28-27 win over the Ravens.

Overall, four teams  (Browns, Jaguars, Chargers, Raiders) won on Sunday despite trailing by seven or more points in the final two minutes of regulation, which marks the first time that’s ever happened in NFL history.

So did any of those four teams earn an ‘A’ for their performance? Let’s get to the grades for Week 12 and find out. Note: If want to see the grades from the three Thanksgiving games, be sure to click here
