A Mom Lost Her Hair Due to a Brain Tumor, Son Grew Hair for a Wig

  • Mother-son duo Melanie and Matt Shaha live in Arizona.
  • Melanie told “Today” that she lost her hair after undergoing radiation treatment for a brain tumor.
  • Matt grew his hair for two and a half years, then paid $2,000 to have a wig made for his mother.

An Arizona mother lost her hair while undergoing radiation treatment for a brain tumor, so her son grew out his hair and had it made into a $2,000 wig.

Melanie Shaha, a mother of six, told Today’s Elise Solé that doctors first discovered her benign brain tumor of the pituitary gland in 2003.

According to The National Cancer Institute, the pituitary gland is a small organ attached at the base of the brain that makes hormones that control “many” of the body’s functions like growth and fertility. Around 10,000 pituitary tumors are diagnosed annually in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.

Melanie had surgery to remove the tumor, which grew to be the size of a plum according to “Today,” but in 2006 she underwent a second procedure after it returned. In 2017 when the tumor returned for the third time, she was prescribed radiation treatment.

The National Cancer Institute said that radiation therapy could cause hair loss on the body party being treated. The institute notes that hair typically grows back in 3 to 6 months, but receiving a high dose of radiation may cause hair to grow back thinner or not at all.

“Not having hair, you stick out like a sore thumb and well-meaning people can say things that break your heart,” she told “Today.” “I don’t mind being sick but I mind looking sick. I’d rather blend in and not stand out at the store.”

According to “Today,” in 2018 Melanie’s 27-year-old son Matt made a joke that sparked an idea during a family lunch.

“I said, ‘Why don’t I grow out my hair to make a wig for you?'” Matt told the outlet, adding that at the time he was growing out his hair because the university he attended had strict rules about hair length.

Although Melanie initially didn’t want to take her son up on his offer, he persisted and grew 12 inches of hair by late March of this year, “Today” reported. KSAZ, a local news station in Phoenix, Arizona, reports that Matt grew his hair over the span of two and a half years.

With the help of his coworkers, Matt chopped off his long locks in March of this year, “Today” reported.

“We were super pumped and when they started cutting, we bawled,” Melanie told “Today.”

Then, they shipped the hair to Compassionate Creations in Newport Beach, California, where it was assembled into a hand-stitched wig, “Today reported.” KSAZ reports that the wig cost $2,000.

“The color is spectacular and we had it cut and styled with a hairdresser,” Melanie told “Today.” “Matt said it looks great on me.”

“It’s a no-brainer,” Matt told KSAZ. “She gave me the hair in the first place.”

The Shahas did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

Was Fred Durst Wearing a Wig for Limp Bizkit’s Lollapalooza Set?

Is Fred Durst wearing a wig?

Going by Limp Bizkit’s news-making set at Lollapalooza 2021 and the Bizkit bandleader’s recent social media posts, a new “Dad Vibes” Durst look — retro gray locks, cop shades, handlebar mustache, sensible menswear — has replaced the singer’s signature Yankees cap of Limp Bizkit’s hit-making yesteryear.

Not that Durst had worn the fitted hat much in recent memory. Still, who’d have guessed that, some 20 years later, the onetime MTV star and Chocolate Starfish showstopper would somehow turn his revered and reviled 2000s image in on itself?

It’s been tickling music fans since the days leading to the musician debuting his new visage onstage, culminating with the band’s energetic Lollapalooza set — but, hey, is that a wig? (It’s a wig, right?)

Here’s what people are saying about Durst’s ‘do:

Frazer Harrison, Getty Images

While Durst assuredly has the resources to fund hair plugs, yes, that’s undoubtedly a wig he’s been rocking. Plenty of available images show Durst with a largely hairless dome beneath the caps he often wears, and other images show thinning hair early in his career.

But this is no critique of Durst or his wig — or his hair or lack thereof. It’s a response to curiosity about the musician and his apparent hairpiece. At this point, the Limp Bizkit frontman seems to be leaning into the meme and spoofing himself. He probably wouldn’t care whether anyone thinks it’s a wig or not.

Still, maybe the singer has superpowers and he grew all of his hair back. And now it matches his silver beard that, usually filled out, has been a staple of the musician’s look for the past few years.

What’s more rooted in reality but perhaps just as fanciful is that Durst has seemingly been circling the “Dad Vibes” idea for quite a long time. Though now deleted or hidden, the Limp Bizkit figurehead once filled his Instagram feed with vintage photos of station wagons, going back to 2016. The pics were nearly always appended with the hashtag #wagonfriendly, something Durst continues to use online.

So let the dad vibes commence; let’s make it the summer of dad vibes. Durst and his wig have inaugurated a new age — now, even dads with gray wigs can rock the stage at Lollapalooza. (Indeed, Durst is a real-life dad with two kids, the youngest of whom, Dallas, was present at his father’s July 31 Lolla gig.)

What do you think of Durst’s surreal, meme-worthy comeback with a dad-rock-era Limp Bizkit? Do you think it’s a wig? Are you excited to hopefully hear new material from the nu-metal veterans? It’s been a long time since hits such as “Rollin’,” “Nookie” and others were dominating radio and television.

Going by what Durst said during Bizikit’s Lollapalooza gig, the long-awaited Limp Bizkit album once known as Stampede of the Disco Elephants is now titled Dad Vibes, after the title track he played on the speakers to end the show. It would be their first album in 10 years.

Billie Eilish Just Confirmed She Hid Her Blonde Hair With a Wig

Billie Eilish just debuted platinum blonde hair, but apparently, she’s been rocking lighter locks for a lot longer than she let on.

On March 17, the “when the party’s over” singer unveiled her new, Debbie Harry-esque hair style on Instagram, along with the caption, “pinch me.” Fans flooded the typically dark-hued star’s comments section with compliments, however, this photo didn’t tell the whole story about Billie’s hair transformation.

In a since-deleted post screenshot by fans on social media, Billie’s hairstylist Lissa Renn took to Instagram to dish about how she took Billie from black hair with green roots to this platinum blonde look, writing, “The process is real when you’re doing it right. 6 weeks to get all the black out of her ends without damaging it, along with her following my strict haircare regime. We actually loved all the stages of lifting color but the end result is [fire emoji.]”

The problem? Billie’s hair was its standard black and green at the Grammys on March 14…meaning that the World’s a Little Blurry subject was rocking a wig at the event, and for weeks before.
