A Whopping 301 Newly Confirmed Exoplanets – Discovered With New Deep Neural Network ExoMiner

“Unlike other exoplanet-detecting machine learning programs, ExoMiner isn’t a black box – there is no mystery as to why it decides something is a planet or not,” said Jon Jenkins, exoplanet scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley. “We can easily explain which features in the data lead ExoMiner to reject or confirm a planet.”

What is the difference between a confirmed and validated exoplanet? A planet is “confirmed,” when different observation techniques reveal features that can only be explained by a planet. A planet is “validated” using statistics – meaning how likely or unlikely it is to be a planet based on the data.

In a paper published in the Astrophysical Journal, the team at Ames shows how ExoMiner discovered the 301 planets using data from the remaining set of possible planets – or candidates – in the Kepler Archive. All 301 machine-validated planets were originally detected by the Kepler Science Operations Center pipeline and promoted to planet candidate status by the Kepler Science Office. But until ExoMiner, no one was able to validate them as planets.

The paper also demonstrates how ExoMiner is more precise and consistent in ruling out false positives and better able to reveal the genuine signatures of planets orbiting their parent stars – all while giving scientists the ability to see in detail what led ExoMiner to its conclusion.

“When ExoMiner says something is a planet, you can be sure it’s a planet,” added Hamed Valizadegan, ExoMiner project lead and machine learning manager with the Universities Space Research Association at Ames. “ExoMiner is highly accurate and in some ways more reliable than both existing machine classifiers and the human experts it’s meant to emulate because of the biases that come with human labeling.”

None of the newly confirmed planets are believed to be Earth-like or in the habitable zone of their parent stars. But they do share similar characteristics to the overall population of confirmed exoplanets in our galactic neighborhood.

“These 301 discoveries help us better understand planets and solar systems beyond our own, and what makes ours so unique,” said Jenkins.

As the search for more exoplanets continues – with missions using transit photometry such as NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS, and the European Space Agency’s upcoming PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars, or PLATO, mission – ExoMiner will have more opportunities to prove it’s up to the task.

“Now that we’ve trained ExoMiner using Kepler data, with a little fine-tuning, we can transfer that learning to other missions, including (function(d, s, id){ var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.6"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

An ‘earthgrazer’ flew ‘a whopping 186 miles’ over two states, then vanished, NASA says

Credit: CC0 Public Domain

A space object with an intimidating name—”earthgrazer”—zoomed over Georgia and Alabama this week, offering witnesses a glimpse of something rare, NASA says.

“Earthgrazers” are fireball meteors with a trajectory so shallow that they skim long distances across the upper atmosphere, NASA says.

“Very rarely, they even ‘bounce off’ the atmosphere and head back out into space,” NASA Meteor Watch wrote on Facebook.

The fireball appeared Tuesday, Nov. 9, around 6:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, officials say, and was “detected by three NASA meteor cameras in the region.”

It entered the atmosphere “at a very shallow angle—only 5 degrees from the horizontal.”

In fact, it was flying for so long that NASA had to recalculate its data to determine how far it traveled across the planet.

“The meteor was first seen at an altitude of 55 miles above the Georgia town of Taylorsville, moving northwest at 38,500 miles per hour,” NASA says. Taylorsville is about 55 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.

“Its path was so long that our automated software could not handle all the data. So we ran another analysis code this morning (Nov. 10) and discovered that the fireball traveled … a whopping 186 miles through the air,” according to NASA. “The revised calculations put the end point 34 miles above the town of Lutts, in southern Tennessee.”

It was “a rare meteor for those fortunate enough to see it,” NASA officials say.

An overcast sky in the region blocked the view for many people, and also foiled attempts to estimate the size of the rock, officials say.

Scientists believe it was “a small fragment of an asteroid burning up.”

NASA says an uptick in meteor sightings is expected annually between September and November as the planet “passes through a broad stream of debris left by Comet Encke.” The debris travels as fast as 65,000 mph as it “burns up” in the atmosphere.

Someone in The Kalahari Collected Crystals a Whopping 105,000 Years Ago

A rockshelter in South Africa’s Kalahari documents the innovative behaviors of early humans who lived there 105,000 years ago. We report the new evidence today in Nature.

The rockshelter site is at Ga-Mohana Hill – a striking feature that stands proudly above an expansive savanna landscape.

Many residents of nearby towns consider Ga-Mohana a spiritual place, linked to stories of a great water snake. Some community members use the area for prayer and ritual. The hill is associated with mystery, fear and secrecy.

Now, our findings reveal how important this place was even 105,000 years ago, documenting a long history of its spiritual significance. Our research also challenges a dominant narrative that the Kalahari region is peripheral in debates on the origins of humans.

We know our species, Homo sapiens, first emerged in Africa. Evidence for the complex behaviours that define us has mostly been found at coastal sites in South Africa, supporting the idea that our origins were linked to coastal resources.

This view now requires revision.

Above: The Ga-Mohana Hill North Rockshelter is located near the town of Kuruman in the Northern Cape province of South Africa.

A crystal-clear finding

We found 22 white and well-formed calcite crystals brought to the site 105,000 years ago. We determined this using a method called “optically stimulated luminescence”, which dates sediments the crystals were excavated from.

Our analysis indicates the crystals were not introduced into the deposits via natural processes, but rather represent a small cache of deliberately collected objects.

Crystals found across the planet and from several time periods have previously been linked to humans’ spiritual belief and ritual. This includes in southern Africa.

People at coastal sites similarity started to collect non-food seashells around the same time (but not earlier) – perhaps for similar reasons.

Egg-citing technology

Ostrich eggshells can make excellent water storage containers and were used as such in southern Africa during the Pleistocene and Holocene. At coastal sites, the earliest evidence for this technology dates back about 105,000 years.

At Ga-Mohana Hill, we found ostrich eggshell fragments that show all the signs of being human-collected, based on their strong association with artefacts (including animal bones that are cut-marked from being butchered), and evidence of having been burned. These fragments may be the remains of early containers.

Above: 105,000-year-old ostrich eggshell fragments (left). Modern day example of ostrich eggshell canteen (right).

This suggests early humans in the Kalahari were no less innovative than those living on the coast.

A global effort

International and interdisciplinary collaboration makes for the best research and our paper’s authorship includes researchers from eight institutions across Australia, South Africa, Canada, Austria and the UK.

Local South African collaborators had an especially crucial role. For example, Robyn Pickering, Jessica von der Meden and Wendy Khumalo at the University of Cape Town provided important palaeoenvironmental context for the archaeology.

By dating tufa deposits around Ga-Mohana Hill, they showed water was more abundant 105,000 years ago when early humans were using the rockshelter.

Nnoga ya metsi

Many who visit Ga-Mohana Hill today for ritual practice see it as part of a network of places linked to the Great Water Snake (Nnoga ya metsi), a capricious and shape-shifting being. Many of these spiritual places are also associated with water.

Places such as Ga-Mohana Hill and their associated stories remain some of the most enduring intangible cultural artefacts from the past, linking modern indigenous South Africans to earlier communities.

These enduring beliefs establish an important sense of orientation in a country that has been spatially disorientated by colonial disruption.

Respectful research benefits all

Those who visit the site today for ritual purposes rely on its association with fear to launch them into their desired ritual states. The site’s remoteness greatly contributes to this.

Recognising this significance, we’ve been adjusting our project methods to not undermine the practices held there. For example, following each excavation season, the areas we work from are completely back-filled and covered with sediment.

In this way, we can carefully recover our sections later, but leave almost no visible trace of our work. We haven’t erected any signage or structures, or otherwise left any significant permanent modifications.

Community engagement continues as we consider ways to integrate the cultural and archaeological values of Ga-Mohana Hill. We are working to further develop an approach that has a positive impact on local communities, while also reflecting on what these communities teach us – particularly regarding respect and ritual.

From an archaeological perspective, we believe this approach will help ensure Ga-Mohana Hill can continue to offer new and valuable insights into the evolution of Homo sapiens in the Kalahari.

Cruella trailer racks up a whopping 71 million views in the first 24 hours of release

Cruella trailer racks up a whopping 71 million views in the first 24 hours of release… besting Disney hits like Maleficent 2 and Aladdin

Disney made quite the splash last week when they debuted the first trailer for the highly-anticipated Cruella.

The trailer was watched a whopping 71 million times on all platforms within the first 24 hours, according to a report from Deadline.

While the numbers bested other Disney hits such as Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (61.7M views) and Aladdin (60.8M), it’s still nowhere close to the all-time record.

Trailer views: The trailer was watched a whopping 71 million times on all platforms within the first 24 hours, according to a report from Deadline

Disney holds the top four slots in the most-viewed movie trailers of all time, with the first trailer for Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame leading the way with 289 million views.

The second trailer for Avengers: Endgame came in second place with 268 million views followed by the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War with 230 million views and the live-action remake of The Lion King with 224.6 million views.

More recently, Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan amassed 175 million views in its first day, though that was before the COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on the movie industry in more ways than one.

Cruella also earned an impressive 265K mentions on social media, surpassing both Aladdin (228K) and Beauty and the Beast (154K), which amassed 127.6M views of its first trailer.

A lot of the social media conversation swirled around controversial comparisons between Emma Stone’s title character and the Joaquin Phoenix film Joker.

Whether or not those social media impressions will translate into big box office dollars remains to be seen, with Disney setting a May 28 release date for Cruella, positioning it in the all-important Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Still, with roughly 53% of North American theaters closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cruella’s success certainly depends on how many theaters are open by the end of May, as COVID-19 vaccines continue to be rolled out.

Many had wondered if Cruella would get a hybrid release in theaters and on Disney Plus with Premier Access, like the studio is doing with Raya and the Last Dragon on March 5.

However, the studio made no indication of a hybrid release during Disney Investor Day, though it still remains to be seen if theaters in major markets like Los Angeles and New York will be open by then.

Cruella is set in 1970s London, as Stone’s character Estella de Vil, who finds herself amid the punk rock revolution, as she tries to make a name for herself with her unique designs.

She befriends a pair of thieves, Boris (Mark Strong) and Horace (Paul Walter Hauser) as her designs catch the eye of fashion legend Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson).

This relationship sets forth a chain of events that leads to Estella’s transformation into the wicked Cruella de Vil.
