See how your iPhone tracks your whereabouts 24/7 – turn it off

Our iPhone is now glued to our existence and with us wherever we go.  Yet it’s a little concerning knowing that these smartphones can track you at all times of the day and night, even when you don’t want them to.

It’s incredibly creepy when you use your Maps app or another GPS app, and your phone suggests frequent places you’ve visited, like your home address, a friend’s house, or your workplace.

How is my iPhone tracking my frequent locations?

Apple gave its iPhone devices a special feature called Significant Locations. These locations are typically where you visit the most often.

This feature is turned on by default, and it’s meant to help you keep track of all the places that you have visited most frequently.

Although you may view this as a valuable feature that you enjoy using, I understand that not everyone wants to be tracked at all times of the day, and some would rather keep the places you visit private, even from your own devices.  Centered on privacy, Apple lets us get better control to disable Significant Locations.

Vicky White and Casey White search: Authorities still in the dark on whereabouts of missing Alabama inmate and former corrections officer after reaching another dead-end in search

The 2007 Ford SUV officials believe Vicky White, 56, and inmate Casey White, 38, were traveling in during their escape from the Lauderdale County Detention Center in Alabama more than a week ago was located in a Tennessee tow lot, Sheriff Rick Singleton said Friday during a news conference.

“The car was cleaned out,” the sheriff told CNN Saturday. “There wasn’t anything left in the vehicle. They apparently took everything they had with them.”

The corrections officer, who is now no longer employed by the sheriff’s office, left with the inmate from the jail on the morning of April 29, saying she would take him to the courthouse for a mental health evaluation. She also said she would seek medical care for herself after dropping him off because she wasn’t feeling well.

The pair never arrived at the courthouse or medical facility, setting off a manhunt involving local and federal authorities.

The two are not related but may have had a romantic relationship, Singleton has said.

“It’s been a difficult week, a challenging week, a discouraging week,” Singleton told CNN Saturday. “Ultimately as a sheriff, I am responsible for the jail, and this is on my shoulders.

“I want to see that we get Casey White back behind bars, and I want to see Vicky White brought in so we can understand exactly what she was thinking,” Singleton added.

Although locating the SUV gave authorities a sense of the direction the pair was headed, investigators are still trying to piece together their movements days after they left the jail in a patrol car.

‘Back to square one’

Surveillance video from the detention center showed the pair getting into a patrol car at the facility the morning of their disappearance, with Casey White handcuffed and shackled, officials have said.

The patrol car was later abandoned in a shopping center parking lot near the jail with Vicky White’s jail keys, radio and handcuffs inside. The pair then drove off in an orange Ford SUV that Vicky White had purchased and left in the same parking lot the night before, Singleton has said.

On Friday, authorities said they located the SUV, which had been in a Tennessee tow lot for about a week. The SUV was taken there after it was found abandoned in the woods and without any identifying information last Friday.

Authorities believe the SUV may have experienced mechanical problems, which prompted the sudden stop in that area.

The discovery means the pair drove roughly two hours north to Williamson County, Tennessee, after disappearing from the jail in Florence, Alabama, Singleton explained during the Friday news conference.

“We know now where the car is, we know what direction they went,” the sheriff said. “We’re trying to canvass the area for any witnesses, also trying to research, see if any stolen vehicles were reported in that area during that time.”

Investigators don’t yet know if the pair stole another vehicle or caught a ride with someone else, the sheriff said.

“We’re sort of back to square one,” he said. “After Friday afternoon, when they abandoned that car, which direction they went from there, we don’t know.”

Former officer’s experience could hinder search

Vicky White’s experience in law enforcement has helped the pair escape capture, officials believe.

“Her knowledge of corrections and her knowledge of the procedures that we use here at the sheriff’s office most definitely played to her advantage. I think this was a very well-thought-out plan,” Singleton said Friday during the news conference.

Vicky White had submitted her retirement papers before disappearing and the day of the escape was to be her last day at work.

She now has an active arrest warrant for allegedly permitting or facilitating escape in the first degree. She is no longer employed by the sheriff’s office, the office said.

Investigators believe she had a large amount of money when she and the inmate vanished and she has used aliases, including for the purchase of the vehicle, Singleton said. “I’m assuming she’s probably ditched those aliases and probably got some new identities now,” he explained.

Further, the pair should be considered armed and dangerous and may have an AR-15 rifle, handguns and a shotgun, the US Marshals Service warned.

Before escaping, Casey White was serving 75 years for a series of crimes in 2015, including a home invasion, carjacking and a police chase, according to the US Marshals Service. He also faces two counts of capital murder for the stabbing death of 59-year-old Connie Ridgeway in 2015, the service said.

The US Marshals Service has offered up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the inmate and up to $5,000 for the former officer. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey also said an additional rewards of $5,000 each for information leading to the arrest of the pair.

CNN’s Ryan Young, Jaide Timm-Garcia, Paradise Afshar, Nadia Romero and Christina Maxouris contributed to this report.

Sergei Shoigu: Questions swirl over whereabouts of Russia’s defense minister

Shoigu, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, has kept a low profile recently despite having a leading role in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The independent investigative Russian outlet Agentstvo reported Wednesday that Shoigu was in poor health, citing anonymous sources in the ministry.
Peskov dodged questions on Thursday about the health of Shoigu. “The Defense Minister has a lot on his plate at the moment,” he said when CNN asked about Shoigu’s reported absence. “The special military operation is going on. Naturally, now is not exactly the time for media activity, this is quite understandable.”

The Kremlin spokesperson declined to disprove the report by Agentstvo when asked by CNN. “I can’t. You shouldn’t listen to the Agenstvo media outlet. Please address [these questions to] the Ministry of Defense.”

Shoigu appeared in a Channel One broadcast on March 18 that the Russian outlet said was from that day, but Russian journalists have speculated that the event being broadcast was from March 11.

State-owned TV channel Russia 24 broadcast footage on Thursday of a virtual meeting attended by Shoigu, but did not say when the meeting took place.

The anchor quoted Peskov suggesting Shoigu was giving a report to the National Security Council on the military operation in Ukraine remotely. The broadcast footage, which interrupted a live interview, did not show Shoigu speak, but his image appeared on screen among other video call participants reporting to Putin.

During a televised Security Council Meeting in Russia on March 11, Shoigu told Putin that its invasion of Ukraine was being carried out successfully, despite evidence to the contrary.

Western leaders said at the time that Russia’s military had encountered unplanned obstacles and resistance.

“All is going according to the plan, we report to you here every day this week,” Shoigu said.

He also claimed that the Russian army had received more than 16,000 applications from volunteers in the Middle East wanting to join the war in Ukraine.

The defense minister also asked Putin for more weapons to arm the separatist regions in Ukraine’s Donbas.

Russian military leaders, including Shoigu, have been stonewalling their US counterparts, declining calls since the invasion began, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said in a statement Thursday. He added that US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark A. Milley, “have sought, and continue to seek, calls with their Russian counterparts. Minister Shoigu and General (Valery) Gerasimov have so far declined to engage.”

“We continue to believe that engagement between U.S. and Russian defense leaders is critically important at this time,” Kirby added.

CNN has previously reported that the last known time Austin last spoke with Shoigu was on February 18. Milley last spoke to Gerasimov on February 11.

Envoy quits

The speculation over Shoigu’s health comes as a longstanding Russian government insider, Anatoly Chubais, became the highest-profile Kremlin figure to resign since the war began a month ago.

Peskov confirmed that Chubais quit his job as Putin’s climate envoy, but denied any knowledge of Chubais’ reported opposition to the invasion of Ukraine.

“No, the Kremlin doesn’t know anything about it,” Peskov told CNN when asked to comment on reports suggesting Chubais quit his job over disapproval of Putin’s decision to launch the war in Ukraine.

Peskov also confirmed his resignation letter would have to be sent to Putin himself.

“Those who are appointed by presidential decree write (resignation letters) addressed to Putin,” he added.

Peskov said Chubais had not been a full-time government employee and was working on a voluntary basis.

Chubais first rose to prominence as Russian President Boris Yeltsin’s finance minister in the 1990s before going on to hold powerful posts in the Russian energy industry.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported the last time Milley last spoke to Gerasimov. It was February 11.

Brian Laundrie news latest: Whereabouts of gun unknown

Brian Laundrie shot himself in head, family attorney confirms

The whereabouts of the gun used in Brian Laundrie’s death remains unknown, days after a lawyer for the family revealed the results of an autopsy on the 23-year-old’s remains.

Mr Laundrie, who was the focus of a manhunt for more than a month as investigators searched for clues in the death of Ms Petito during their cross-country van trip together, was found to have shot himself in the head.

The Laundrie family’s lawyer Steven Bertolino said his parents had been informed about the cause of death, a gunshot wound, and the manner of death was suicide.

It comes after the results of autopsy in October found no conclusive cause of death, in part thanks to the remains being found submerged in an area of the Myakkahatachee Creek Environmental Park in Florida on 20 October.

Authorities have also been trying to repair a personal notebook retrieved from a dry bag near his body as part of their investigation into the death of his girlfriend and fiancé Gabby Petito, in addition to the gun.

Crucial to their investigation will be Laundrie’s digital communications, including his texts and emails, use of social media, and internet browsing history prior to his death.

What have Gabby Petito’s family said?

“The Schmidt and Petito family has been aware of the circumstances surrounding the suicide of the sole suspect in Gabby’s murder,” an attorney for the family said in a statement Tuesday.

“Gabby’s family will not be making a statement at this time due to the request of the United States Attorney’s Office and the Teton County Prosecutor’s Office,” the attorney, Richard Stafford, reportedly added of her parents and stepparents.

Brian Laundrie: The dark themes that permeate his digital footprint

A recently uncovered social media account belonging to Brian Laundrie is being pored over by an army of internet sleuths seeking clues to his state of mind prior to his death.

The Pinterest page suspected of being Mr Laundrie’s is also offering new clues into his state of mind in the weeks before his girlfriend Gabby Petito went missing on or about 25 August.

Ms Petito’s remains were found in Wyoming on 19 September. Laundrie was found dead in a Florida reserve a month later, and autopsy results showed he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, family lawyer Steven Bertolino announced on 23 November.

Gabby Petito family waiting to see if others will be charged as Brian Laundrie lawyer reveals cause of death

The family of Gabby Petito has said it is waiting to see if other individuals are charged over their daughter’s murder, after it was reported the suspect in her death had shot himself in the head.

A lawyer for the family of Brian Laundrie, whose remains were recovered from a Florida nature reserve last month, said a post-mortem examination had concluded the 24-year-old had died after shooting himself in the head with a gun.

Laundrie had been named as a “person of interest” by the FBI in the disappearance and killing of the 22-year-old woman, whose case triggered global attention.

Dog the Bounty Hunter questions latest news on Brian Laundrie

Dog the Bounty Hunter has questioned the latest details released on Brian Laundrie’s autopsy results, hinting that he believes that the fugitive could still be alive.

Just hours after the news broke on Tuesday that Laundrie had died from suicde, Duane ‘Dog’ Chapman appeared on Fox News to give his take on proceedings.

During his interview with the channel, Mr Chapman spoke of the fugitive as if there was still some doubt that the human remains found last month in Florida did not belong to him.

“If he’s alive he’s going to get arrested,” Mr Chapman said before adding: “Right now it looks like he committed suicide.”

“It’s a tragedy for both families,” he said.

Did Brian Laundrie leave a suicide note? Damaged notebook may provide last chance of learning how Gabby Petito died

A notebook recovered close to the skeletal remains of Gabby Petito’s boyfriend Brian Laundrie may represent the last hope authorities have for finding answers about her death.

Laundrie, whose death was confirmed to be gunshot wounds by suicide on Tuesday, was found in the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park on 20 October, along with personal items including a notebook that had been sealed inside a dry bag.

The area had been underwater for nearly a month, and the notebook sustained water damage, but North Port Police spokesman Josh Taylor said last month it may be “salvageabale”.

Outrage over FBI ‘hiding’ that Brian Laundrie was ‘armed’

The FBI is being slammed for “hiding” the fact that he was “armed and dangerous,” after it was revealed that Brian Laundrie had shot himself in the head.

Steven Bertolino, the attorney representing Laundrie’s parents — had earlier said one of the Laundries’ guns could not be found at the time their son went missing.

He was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail: “We didn’t want the public going into a frenzy on that. I don’t think they considered him dangerous to anybody he met on the street.”

The family had tried to keep it a secret.

The investigators are still looking for the gun.

Now people are furious with the FBI for hiding that Laundrie was “armed” and “dangerous.”

On social media, several observers asked “Why do we even have an FBI?” and others said: “What is FBI hiding.”

One user, who goes by the handle Tessarossa on Twitter said: “Wow. I saw the update on the news and this blatantly obvious question didn’t even occur to me. None of this makes sense. What is the FBI hiding?”

There was outrage over the fact that the FBI tried to hide the “vital information.” One social media user commented that the law enforcement and the FBI have a lot to answer for in the Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie case “knowing that he had a firearm when he went missing and not notifying the public of an armed and dangerous person.”

Laundrie family lawyer says he has “no reason” to think parents will face charges in Gabby Petito case

ICYMI: Steven Bertolino, the attorney representing the parents of Brian Laundrie, said he has “no reason” to believe that his clients will face charges in the death of Gabby Petito.

“I have no reason to believe any charges will be filed against Chris and Roberta Laundrie [Brian Laundrie’s parents] with respect to this case,” Mr Bertolino said in a statement to Insider.

The statement comes in the wake of Petito family attorney, Richard Stafford, claiming he has advised his clients to remain silent until the FBI investigation into the case has concluded, noting that prosecutors are considering whether or not to charge “additional individuals” with crimes connected to the woman’s death.

Alec Baldwin ‘Rust’ shooting: Police ‘not exactly sure’ of actor’s ‘whereabouts’ but says he’s cooperating

During a press conference on Wednesday, Santa Fe sheriff Adan Mendoza said that he’s “not exactly sure of [Baldwin’s] present whereabouts,” as he hasn’t been asked to stay put in New Mexico, though police say, he has been cooperative in their ongoing investigation into the accidental “Rust” shooting.

The 63-year-old actor was in New Mexico filming the upcoming western-genre film when he discharged a firearm he was told was unloaded during a rehearsal.

A projectile from the gun struck and ultimately killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Director Joel Souza was also injured but has since been sent home from the hospital.

‘RUST’ MOVIE SHOOTING PRESS CONFERENCE: ALEC BALDWIN’S WHEREABOUTS UNKNOWN BUT HE’S COOPERATING

Production on the picture has paused while an investigation into the matter continues, and it wasn’t long after the incident that an assistant was seen packing up Baldwin’s family’s belongings into a car thought to be headed to their estate in the Hamptons.

ALEC BALDWIN ‘RUST’ SHOOTING ‘IS A VERY COMPLICATED CASE,’ POLICE SAY: ‘IT’S A PUZZLE’

Though it was thought that the Oscar-nominee and his family might head to their Hamptons home, there is work being done on the estate, so it’s likely he’s not there.

Alec Baldwin was rehearsing a scene for the movie ‘Rust’ when he discharged a firearm – he was told was ‘cold – resulting in the death of a crew member. Authorities said he has been cooperative in their investigation, though they do not currently know of his whereabouts. He was not asked to remain in New Mexico.

It’s unclear whether Baldwin and his brood are hunkering down in a property they are renting or whether a friend or family member is putting them up for the time being.

At the time of the shooting, Baldwin was staying in New Mexico. He was spotted several times at the La Posada hotel, a local told Fox News – once with the son and the husband of Hutchins – though it’s unclear if that’s exactly where he was staying at the time.

“Rust” was being filmed on Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe when the gun was discharged. The actor has not been seen for several days since the shooting.

Brazil wonders about whereabouts of vaccine mascot

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Rumors and conspiracy theories swirled this past week regarding the whereabouts of Zé Gotinha, the mascot for the national vaccination program.

The clamor surrounding the costumed Zé Gotinha began Wednesday, after former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva drew attention to his recent absence.

“Where is our beloved Zé Gotinha?” da Silva said in a speech criticizing President Jair Bolsonaro’s handling of the pandemic.

Zé Gotinha, whose name translates roughly as “Joe Droplet” and who resembles an overgrown Casper the Friendly Ghost, was created in the 1980s to help the health ministry promote vaccination against the polio virus and put children at ease.

“The advertisements about vaccines had been very heavy. They were associated with something terrible, tragic, life-threatening,” Carla Domingues, former coordinator of the national vaccination program between 2011 and 2019, told The Associated Press.

Gotinha changed that and, due to his success, he has since made regular appearances to warn about the importance of preventing measles, tuberculosis, whooping cough, diphtheria and, most recently, COVID-19.

But the last time Gotinha was seen publicly in a ceremony in Brasilia was Dec. 16, launching the country’s vaccination program. The character, much beloved by children, declined Bolsonaro’s attempted handshake in the name of social distancing.

Da Silva, a leftist who is Bolsonaro’s rival, presented his own theory about what happened to Gotinha: “Bolsonaro fired him, because he thought he was from the Workers’ Party.”

One theory is that the mascot’s publicity services may not be needed at the moment, as Brazil is using its limited doses to vaccinate the elderly and people in priority groups, not yet children.

Many on social networks are speculating about Gotinha’s fate. One person spoke of the drama of Gotinha being unemployed. Another reinterpreted a typical poster of a missing child, with the image of the mascot and the caption “disappeared”.

“Cheering for the quick recovery of Zé Gotinha. Only this hero can save us,” said a Twitter user who speculated the mascot could be suffering from a disease.

Since coronavirus vaccinations started in Brazil, Bolsonaro has cast doubt on their effectiveness. He recently began walking back such skepticism but continues to claim drugs such as hydroxychloroquine can help prevent hospitalization, though they have shown no benefits in rigorous studies.

Due to low supplies and slow rollout, almost 5% of Brazilians have received at least one vaccine shot so far, according to Brazil’s national council of state health secretaries. But 79% of Brazilians want to be vaccinated, according to a survey that pollster Datafolha published January 23. That’s up 6 percentage points from the prior poll in December.

On Friday, a drawing of Gotinha made an appearance in the social media of Eduardo Bolsonaro, the president’s son and a federal lawmaker. The mascot was depicted holding a syringe in the shape of assault rifle. “Our weapon is the vaccine,” the lawmaker wrote.

Gotinha’s creator, artist Darlan Rosa, was appalled.

“(Gotinha) was conceived as an educational character. There’s nothing educational about a gun,” Rosa told newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. Carlos Latuff, another cartoonist, drew an image depicting Gotinha breaking a rifle over his knee.

Domingues, the former vaccination program coordinator, said Gotinha was an integral part of vaccination efforts.

“Gotinha was thought up to make vaccination a holiday for children, and it was a great success,” Domingues said. “He was one of the main people responsible for a change of perspective on immunization.”
