Wedding descends into massive brawl, leaving 1 stabbed

A couple’s glitzy wedding descended into chaos when guests started fighting outside the venue, leaving one of them stabbed.

Police were called to the Grand Paradiso in Fairfield, in Sydney’s west, at about 11 pm on Thursday after a mass brawl broke out.

Video from the scene shows two well-dressed men pushing and shoving each other as an argument breaks out.

One of them throws a left hook which narrowly misses, but it quickly causes tensions to boil over.

New Biden family member Mary C. Neal ‘died and went to heaven’ in 1999

And you thought Hunter Biden’s drug benders had taken him on some out-of-body experiences!

The newest member of Joe Biden’s extended family believes she went to heaven in 1999 when she “drowned” while kayaking — and said God’s pearly gates were so stunning she “did not want to return to earth.”

President Joe Biden’s granddaughter — Hunter’s daughter —  Naomi Biden is set to get married Saturday at the White House to Peter Neal, whose mom Dr. Mary C. Neal is the author of “To Heaven and Back: A Doctor’s Extraordinary Account of her Death, Heaven, Angels and Life Again.”

The No. 1 best-seller published in 2011 tells the story of Neal “dying” and coming back to life when she kayaked down a waterfall in Chile’s Fuy River.

Neal writes about getting “pinned in the waterfall” and trying to escape, but the water was too powerful.

“When I no longer felt myself trying to breathe, I assumed I would die,” she wrote in a chapter titled “Death on the River.”

The mom said dying felt “curiously blissful.” As the other people on the expedition rushed to find her and save her, Neal said she went to heaven.

“It felt as if I had finally shaken off my heavy outer layer, freeing my soul. I rose up and out of the river, and when my soul broke through the surface of the water, I encountered a group of fifteen to twenty souls (human spirits sent by God), who greeted me with the most overwhelming joy I have ever experienced and could ever imagine.”

Neal said she was led to a “great and brilliant hall” where she was so stunned by the beauty that she didn’t want to go back to Earth.

Dr. Mary C. Neal wrote a best-selling book about miraculously going to heaven.
Dr. Mary Neal/Facebook

“Don’t get me wrong…I have been very blessed in my life and have experienced great joy and love here on earth. I love my husband and I love each of my children with great intensity, and that love is reciprocated. It’s just that God’s world is exponentially more colorful and intense,” she said.

“I experienced heaven first-hand after my kayaking accident. The heaven I witnessed was so pure, love-filled and magnificent that I did not want to return to earth.”

Meanwhile, as people back on the Chilean river tried to save her life down on earth, Neal said she got annoyed.

The rescuers “begged me to come back and take a breath, I felt compelled to return to my body and take another breath before returning to my journey,” she wrote. “This became tiresome, and I grew quite irritated with their repeated calling.

“I knew they didn’t understand what was happening, but I was annoyed that they wouldn’t let me go,” she said of her desire to die.

Neal, a devout Christian, is a UCLA-trained orthopedic surgeon who lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, at the time of the incident. She said despite her medical training, she is certain she was dead and came back to life thanks to God.

“I believe Jesus was holding me, comforting me, and reassuring me when I was drowning,” she said — but ultimately it was not her time to go to heaven.

Dr. Mary C. Neal’s “To Heaven and Back” became a New York Times bestseller.
WaterBrook

After being resuscitated, Neal said she was badly injured and had to get to the road. That’s when “several young Chilean men materialized out of nowhere,” who she later realized were “angels by the river.”

“These young men were nowhere to be found” after her accident, she writes, “and the people from the village had no idea who they could be.”

Neal returned to Wyoming following the incident, and doctors at the hospital there told her husband she would likely die. However, her community prayed for her and she persevered.

Neal went on to write her memoir, and a second book titled “7 Lessons from Heaven: How Dying Taught Me How to Live a Joy-Filled Life.” She was also featured on the Netflix show “Surviving Death.”

She gave a Ted Talk on going to heaven and coming back, but it was later flagged by the organization which claimed it “appears to fall outside TEDx’s curatorial guidelines.”

“This talk only represents the speaker’s personal experiences. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers,” the group clarified.

Neal is sure to be at the wedding Saturday on the White House’s south lawn.

Naomi Biden, 28, is the daughter of Hunter Biden and Kathleen Buhle. Her parents divorced in 2017. She is named for the president’s first-born daughter, who tragically died along with Biden’s first wife Neila in a 1972 car crash.

She and her husband-to-be are both lawyers and live in the White House.

Thailand is courting Indian weddings

Thailand hopes to boost its tourism revenue by targeting high-spending groups like Indian wedding parties and honeymooners, a senior tourism official said.

Famous for its white-sand beaches and nightlife, Thailand hopes to tap into “pent-up demand” from the multi-billion-dollar Indian wedding industry, Tourism Authority of Thailand deputy governor Siripakorn Cheawsamoot told Reuters in an interview this week.

“Data from the last two years showed that many Indian couples got married, but couldn’t find honeymoon locations … or held back on getting married because they wanted to have their reception overseas including in Thailand,” he said on Tuesday.

Foreign tourism revenue from January to August 2022 came in at 186 billion baht ($5 billion US) from 4.2 million visitors, and 10 million arrivals are expected for the full year.

The Southeast Asian country relies heavily on tourism as a driver of economic growth. Foreign arrivals plummeted to just 428,000 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, compared with a record of nearly 40 million in 2019 when tourism made up 12% of GDP.

Now, having dropped most pandemic-related restrictions, the government is targeting revenue of $11 billion in the second half of 2022.

Indian weddings in Thailand can last up to a week and include everything from event planning to catering, decoration and transportation.

About 60% of Indian destination weddings in Thailand were those of residents of India, while the remainder were from overseas Indian families, he said, so Thai tourism representatives in Mumbai and New Delhi are expanding partnerships with wedding planners.

Siripakron expects tourists will be spending at least 48,000 baht per trip this year and in 2023 he hopes that number will rise to 50,000 baht per trip, helped by other high-spending segments like medical tourism and executives choosing to work remotely in Thailand.

The government will also extend some tourist visas from 15 to 30 days starting in October as traveler behavior changes to favor longer stays due to expensive flights and low availability, he said.

Britney Spears’ past weddings – Las Vegas whirlwind to Kevin Federline surprise party

Britney Spears and Sam Asghari are set to tie the knot in front of a small room of people. Before Sam, she had short marriages to Jason Alexander and Kevin Federline

Britney’s doomed weddings as she sets to tie the knot after finally finding happiness

Britney Spears is set to marry for the third time today, after finding love with actor and dancer Sam Asghari.

The 40-year-old pop icon and her 28-year-old fiancé are expected to exchange their vows in front of a small room of people which does not include her mum Lynne Spears, dad Jamie or sister Jamie Lynn.

Sam had got down on one knee and asked her to marry him back in September, not long after she was freed from her 13-year-long conservatorship.

The Oops! I Did It Again star is finally happy after years of being under control but it took a lot for her to get to this point.

Before Sam, she was married twice – first to Jason Alexander and then later to Kevin Federline.

She also shares Sean, 16, and Jayden, 15, with K-Fed.

Here’s everything we know about her first two weddings…

Jason Alexander

The duo tied the knot in a chapel in Vegas

Jason Alexander was one of Britney’s childhood friends and the two stayed close throughout the years.

In 2004, when Britney was 23 years old, she partied with Jason in a fun-filled New Year’s Eve Week in Las Vegas.

And we all know what happens when two people get drunk in Vegas…

Like many people, the drunken duo got married in A Little White Wedding Chapel in Sin City and even rented a green stretch limo.

“It was just so crazy, man,” Jason told Access Hollywood about the spontaneous wedding on January 3, 2004.

“We were just looking at each other and said, ‘Let’s do something wild, crazy. Let’s go get married, just for the hell of it.'”

Chapel owner Charlotte Richards even told Rolling Stone that the two ‘appeared to be extremely happy’.

“I thought it was a marriage that would last forever,” she said, two days before Britney had the marriage annulled.

A mere six months later, Britney married backup dancer Kevin Federline after meeting him on the dancer floor at Joseph’s club in Hollywood.

The couple announced their engagement in July 2004. While on her private plane, Britney asked K-Fed whether she would marry him.

Speaking to People, the Toxic singer said: “Then all of a sudden I said, ‘What if you want to get married?’ And I kind of went from there to asking him if he would marry me.

“I asked him… He said no because he thought it wasn’t the right way to do it.” However, he asked her to marry him a few moments later.

A week later, he gave her a five-carat diamond ring. The proposal received a lot of criticism as K-Fed had just broken up with actress Shar Jackson, who was pregnant with their second child at the time.

They ended up having a secret wedding after getting too much attention from the media

Things were out of control when their wedding, which was planned for October 16 of that year, became too publicised.

It stressed the couple out and they ended up shocking the world when they tied the knot in a secret wedding.

“It became this huge thing and I was like, ‘What are we waiting for? We know this is the real thing, why not just do it now?’ That’s why I wanted to sneak and do it our little way,” she told the publication.

30 of their closest friends and family were invited to their wedding at their Studio City home, but they all thought it was an engagement party.

She looked stunning in a $26,000 Monique Lhuillier wedding dress and half-gloves.

Keeping the entire thing casual, the couple offered guests a meal of chicken fingers, crab cakes, ribs, and mashed potatoes.

To celebrate the special day, they even hit up a club.

Three years later, the couple decided to go their separate ways. According to a source, K-Fed’s party-boy behaviour contributed to their split.

In 2008, K-Fed opened up about the split, saying: “It’s hard enough to be in a marriage, and then have a kid, then kids, it changes everything

“For me, I’d become more concerned with my children. Not that I ignored Britney, but my kids are always most important.”

It was completely different for Britney, who claimed she married for the ‘wrong reasons’.

“I think I married for the wrong reasons,” she said. “Instead of following my heart and doing something that made me really happy, I just did it for the idea of everything.”

Just a short month after Kris’ divorce to Kardashian was finalized, she married the Olympic champion Caitlyn Jenner – who was known then as Bruce Jenner – on April 21, 1991. The couple kept their wedding intimate, with their children serving as the bridal party.

Kris shared with Oprah in 2012 details of her second wedding. “It was a very intimate, small wedding—I had such a big wedding the first time and we just really wanted close family and friends [the second time].”

During Caitlyn’s proposal, she popped the question in such a surprising way: she didn’t even have a ring. She ended up giving Kris a ring 22 years after they married while on vacation in Bora Bora.

Kim Kardashian’s marriage to Damon Thomas is one that is not often talked about since it was before the “Skims” founder rose to fame.

At just 19 years old, Kardashian married the music producer – who was 10 years older than her – in a Las Vegas wedding in 2000. After four years, the couple called it quits with Kardashian accusing her ex of abuse, which he denied, per Yahoo.

Kim Kardashian isn’t bringing Pete Davidson to Paris Hilton wedding

Kim Kardashian may be intrigued with “SNL” star Pete Davidson — but it’s not quite yet at the point where she’s bringing him to weddings as her date.

We’re told Kardashian will attend longtime friend Paris Hilton’s wedding to Carter Reum on Thursday without Davidson.

“[Kardashian] is not bringing Pete. She will be there solo,” an insider told Page Six.

Hilton’s wedding is set to be a three-day affair with a ceremony and reception at the reality star and heiress’ late grandfather Barron Hilton’s $65 million Bel-Air estate, we exclusively reported.

Hilton was reportedly planning to have the ceremony at the Good Shepherd Church, where her parents Kathy and Rick wed, but she changed the venue weeks ago, according to other sources.

It’s unclear if Kardashian’s siblings will be attending — but her mom Kris Jenner and Jenner’s boyfriend Corey Gamble are featured in a trailer for Hilton’s upcoming reality docuseries “Paris In Love,” and are expected to attend, we’re told.

Hilton’s big day has been causing some chaos for certain guests, since it’s happening on the same day that Kardashian confidante Simon Huck will say “I do.”

“People are having to divide and conquer,” a source told us.

Meanwhile, planning for Hilton’s big day has come with venue changes, last-minute dress decisions, and invitations without addresses.

“It’s not exactly the most organized,” a guest told us.

But at least Hilton and Reum are clear on their wedding registry. It includes over $60,000 worth of merchandise — such as a $500 Hermés platter, and a $985 Christofle party tray — according to their Geary’s registry.

Season 2, Episode 10, “No Weddings And A Funeral”

Photo: Apple TV+

Picking up a few weeks after Richmond’s loss to Man City, “No Weddings and a Funeral” wastes no time clarifying its emotional purpose. After opening on Sam and Rebecca musing about whether to take their relationship public, Rebecca’s mother arrives with the news that her husband has died, and all of the show’s narrative energy converges on his funeral.

After Beard’s divisive detour into the streets of London, the choice to once again largely ignore the on-field dimensions of Richmond’s season is a bit of a surprising one, with only two episodes left to go in the season. But what becomes clear is that for the show’s writers, whatever ending the season is building to cannot happen until Ted and Rebecca achieve a sense of clarity about how they intend to approach those circumstances, based on what they’ve experienced in the season thus far. For Ted, that means confronting the core emotions about his father’s death which were inevitably brought to the surface by someone else losing their own father. For Rebecca, this means confronting her mother about how she could be romanticizing the cheating, gaslighting man she kept letting back into her life, and what her understanding of this means for her own relationships.

The climax of “No Weddings and a Funeral” is a cross-cut between Ted’s house call therapy session with Sharon—who he called after he had a panic attack putting on his tie to head to the funeral—and Rebecca confronting her mother with the truth about her father’s behavior. For Ted, this is the culmination of the season’s strongest storytelling, gradually allowing us to understand how Ted’s philosophy is founded on his grief and anger over his father’s suicide. It isn’t as simple as the idea that Ted is compensating for his sense of loss. It’s that his entire personality has become about simultaneously working to help everyone in the way he wishes he could have helped his father, and also doing everything in his power to not show his pain and become a burden on them. It’s Rebecca’s mother who says that “once I love something, I love it forever” when defending her choice to stay with her husband, but in many ways Ted’s stubbornness about his coping mechanisms was equally absolute, up until his divorce shattered the equilibrium he had managed to attain. And so not only is Ted feeling that he’s quitting on his family like his father quit on him, but he’s also trained himself never to let anyone else share his pain, trapping him in a toxic cycle.

Based on what Sharon says to Ted over the phone about breathing exercises, this is not their first session since the phone call after the Man City game, but it’s their breakthrough moment. Jason Sudeikis has always been at his best when the show asks him to strip down to Ted’s deep well of sadness, and he’s excellent here as Sharon flips a switch in his brain about how he thinks about his father. It’s important for his therapy that he details the day he found his father’s body, and the hatred he felt for what his father did to his wife and son, but it’s more important that he understands the love he feels for his father in relation to that. The Johnny Tremain story is a core memory for Ted, but one that he had pushed aside, even as it informs the responsibility he feels for his players and his family. And his wish that his father could have known how good he was at being a father is hopefully the permission he needs to let himself accept that he is a good father, friend, and coach, even if he isn’t able to solve all their problems (and even if things like the Nate situation might reveal ways in which he’s failed in those roles at times).

It’s a powerful and important scene, and one that has clear reverberations through all of Ted’s relationships both personal and professional as we head into the rest of the season. The choice to cross-cut it with Rebecca’s conversation with her mother, though, is where things start to get more muddled. To start, Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham is tremendous throughout the scene, matching Sudeikis’ energy and reminding us how well she taps into Rebecca’s vulnerabilities. It’s a tall order to match up something as dark as Ted discovering his father’s body to her finding her father cheating when she was a teenager, but Waddingham sells it, and fully anchors us in Rebecca’s struggle to understand her mother’s choice to act as though this funeral isn’t celebrating a man who did them wrong. And ostensibly, the choice to run the scenes in parallel makes the case that even if it may not have been traumatic to the same degree, Rebecca’s life philosophy has been similarly shaped by her father’s cheating: it informs her approach to romantic relationships, whether it’s her divorce from Rupert or her anxiety over her relationship with Sam.

Except, try as Waddingham might, I struggled to find a coherent narrative in Rebecca’s storyline here, mainly because her arc in the season has been so opaque. As I’ve explored previously, the show entirely lost the character’s work-life balance this season, pivoting exclusively to the bantr storyline outside of the Cerithium Oil situation in “Do The Right-est Thing” that ended up being part of the bantr storyline anyway (which Nora cements by reprising the “Boss Ass Bitch” line to describe Rebecca shagging Sam). What “No Weddings And A Funeral” does is make the argument that her narrow focus on finding love this season is a symptom of her own pathology: whereas the first season saw her come to terms with how her unhealthy desire to hurt Rupert was blinding her to the relationships she was building with her co-workers and her investment in the team she vowed to destroy, that realization didn’t suddenly mean that she knew how to be in a healthy relationship, or that she necessarily knew how to run a football club.

In writing that out, I’m starting to better understand the writers’ goal for Rebecca’s story, but placing it in such close proximity to the subtle yet purposeful setup for Ted’s breakthrough underlines how there wasn’t enough work done early in the season for this to fully register. If you have Hannah Waddingham, giving her a lengthy monologue at her father’s funeral is going to solve some of that problem, but there needed to be more evidence in the season that Rebecca was neglecting parts of her work, and that she was doing more than scrolling through dating apps. The season started with the goal of being promoted, but Rebecca didn’t seem to have internalized that goal, and seemingly didn’t have a professional priority heading into the year. I’m glad that Rebecca still has things to figure out about herself, as the whole message of the show is that personal growth is a process that never ends and can often feel tremendously isolating, but her story just has too many mixed signals for this not to register as an overreach.

While this retcon isn’t entirely successful at justifying her storylines this season, it does at least create a clearer path forward in terms of where the consequences of her and Ted’s actions will complicate Richmond’s future. Although Rebecca weirdly never brings up the power dynamics of her relationship with Sam as a point of anxiety when she decides to break things off, the choice to reintroduce Rupert is indeed conspicuous, and lines up with some discussion in the comments about how the Sam relationship could be used to undermine her leadership given the —fittingly clunky, given the joke earlier in the episode—exposition reminding us about Becks’ shares in the team. And it’s no mistake that Rupert whispers sweet nothings into Nate’s ear on his way out the door, making it increasingly likely that he stages a coup of both Ted and Rebecca in one fell swoop. While my concerns about some of the lack of immediate consequences for past storylines remain, I will be more than happy if the show takes the accumulating neglect from all these storylines into a finale cliffhanger.

However, I am less happy with the clunkiest part of this episode, which was the reintroduction of Jamie into Keeley’s romantic life. I was going to write that it was the return of the Keeley/Roy/Jamie love triangle, but to be honest the show never actually told that story: Keeley had dumped Jamie on her own accord before she really started connecting with Roy, and by the time Jamie returned to the picture Roy and Keeley were already settling into their relationship. Jamie’s return has featured a few moments between him and Keeley, like when he went to her looking for advice on connecting with the team and she took him to Sharon, but those were all fairly minor. Concurrently, the show has never really given us much reason to doubt Roy and Keeley’s relationship, especially given how—as Alan Sepinwall said when I was discussing this episode with him—every fight they have seems to only bring them closer together. And so it was deeply perplexing to watch an episode where Roy picks a dumb fight without a lot of reason, Keeley seems overly impressed that Jamie was willing to wear a normal suit, and they kept stealing glances until Jamie reveals that one of the reasons he came back to Richmond was because he loves her and wants her back.

I just don’t understand the logic of this eleventh hour story. It seems unfathomable to me that anyone in the show’s audience is rooting against Roy and Kelley based on the stories that have been told, and nothing about his minor teasing about her desire to fertilize a tree after she died would have impacted that. And while Jamie has indeed done a lot to fuel his redemption arc, we haven’t been given enough of his point-of-view for him to be an equal rooting interest to Roy, even if Roy had been taken down a peg here. If the show wants this to feel consequential or suspenseful, they needed to have approached the resolution to Roy and Kelley’s past conflicts differently, leaving meaningful wiggle room for it to seem like a legitimate competition. As it stands, it reads as writerly intervention to fuel late-season conflict, without the textual evidence necessary to make it an organic part of the story being told.

With the entirety of the team ditching their trainers—poor Dani might never recover—for the occasion, and Sassy and Nora returning to the fold, “No Weddings And A Funeral” uses its longer running time to deliver lots of small moments of joy, in addition to Rebecca’s Rickroll eulogy serving as an emotional anchor for the funeral itself. And while I do think that this much time spent away from the pitch reinforces the risks associated with Beard’s detour last week, there’s enough fuel in those small moments here to generate momentum, and hopefully bring us a step or two closer to pulling the season’s various threads together. What’s clear here, though, is that the writers may have overreached on how some of these arcs are meant to converge, which is going to create some hurdles to bringing everything full circle by the time Richmond’s do-or-die moment comes at season’s end.

Stray observations

  • To our back-and-forth discussion last week about how narratively significant “Beard After Hours” would be, he Facetimes Jane into the funeral like it’s a concert, without any delving into the unhealthy dimensions of that relationship. For me, it’s still a misstep, although I was happy to continue the dialogue we started about it here in the comments last week with the good folks at Lasso Cast.
  • In addition to his little moment with Rupert, Nate’s super villain arc was also fueled once more by Jan, who notes the infantilizing detail that Nate’s only suit came via Ted. At this point, I don’t see how he turns away from the dark side, given how much someone like Rupert validating him and giving him authority would fuel his ego.
  • After this week’s Emmys—where, if you missed it, the show won Outstanding Comedy Series, Actor, and Supporting Actor (Brett Goldstein) and Actress (Waddingham)—and the number of times they played the beginning of the show’s theme song, it stood out how when the episode awkwardly transitioned from “He died” to “Yeahhhhhh.” Definitely intentional, I thought, given the way they didn’t try to fit in any dialogue in between.
  • Rebecca’s mother made a joke about how Sam’s boxer briefs left little to the imagination but if the writers really wanted that joke to land they would have chosen a lighter color (although it’s possible the black was a standards and practices note).
  • I appreciate the show’s follow through on throwaway jokes, like Ted getting ready for the funeral to “Easy Lover” as he explained earlier in the season. It’s the kind of attention to detail that makes it harder for me when the show contorts itself to make things like the love triangle materialize.
  • As his panic attack comes on, Ted sees the army man his son sent to protect him, his son’s visit last season, and then finally a dart hitting a board.
  • After I watched this episode, I had a conversation with a friend about “Never Gonna Give You Up” where he also brought up the fact that everyone initially presumed Rick Astley was black, so I appreciated that Rebecca’s mother still believed this was true decades later. (Also, while I know that the song has become infamous due to Rickrolling, for me as an older millennial it is instead a definitive “Song I Learned About Due To Pop-Up Video”).
  • I thought Jane Facetiming into a funeral was creepy, but I did appreciate that you could see her on the screen singing along to “Amazing Grace.”
  • I’ve never fully understood shipping Ted and Rebecca, to be honest, and a big part of that is because I find Ted and Sassy’s whole dynamic far more compelling. I’ll ship that.
  • Although he started the season as its first case study, Dani has largely faded into the background, so his little runner about the shoes was fun here.
  • Did anyone get really distracted by how small the doors in Rebecca’s house were, given that she towered over them? How many times did she hit her forehead as a teenager?!
  • Not that I’m entirely hung up on that Grindr joke from Colin earlier in the season, but it’s Bi Visibility Day as I’m writing this, so I’m just going to note we’re still waiting for any other piece of evidence to go along with it. His weirdness that Becks was breastfeeding her baby during the funeral and his ignorance to the fact that not all shoes require you to stand in line and wait for them were both unhelpful in this regard.
  • I’ve been told I am not appreciating Higgins enough, so while it probably wasn’t an expressly necessary scene narratively to see the coaches all debriefing after learning Rebecca’s father died, I appreciated it for Higgins’ belief that in heaven animals are in charge and humans are the pets. I look forward to fan art of him curled up in front of Cindy Clawford.

Coronavirus: Israel launches ‘Happy Badge’ for weddings and large parties

On the heels of the third straight day with more than 750 cases, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said the pass was necessary for “maximum protection.”

Starting Wednesday, access to weddings and similar events with more than 100 guests will be reserved to individuals who are vaccinated, recovered or holders of a recent negative coronavirus test, Bennett, Economy Minister Orna Barbivay and Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz said in a joint statement.

The Happy Badge outline was set to be approved by the coronavirus cabinet late Thursday night.

The system was set up after a meeting between Bennett, Barbivay and event-hall owners earlier in the day to deliberate how weddings could continue to take place in a safe manner amid the current coronavirus outbreak.

“Our goal is not to prevent weddings and other celebrations in the halls,” Bennett told the event-hall owners. “This would be the easiest and most harmful step because weddings would take place in an illegal manner with no control. Our goal is to find out how to allow them at the time of a pandemic, with minimum harm to the events industry and maximum protection of Israeli citizens.”

The event-hall owners made several suggestions, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

The new system will be relevant only for indoor gatherings where food and drinks are served and people both sit and stand. There will be no cap on participants, and people will be required to wear masks.

During the coronavirus cabinet’s meeting on Tuesday, health officials recommended limiting access to gatherings with more than 100 people to vaccinated and/or recovered individuals or people with a negative coronavirus test.

No final decision had been made, but a move in this direction was expected.

During the joint press conference with Bennett on Wednesday, Horowitz said the Health Ministry was working to make inexpensive rapid coronavirus tests widely available. Rapid tests, also known as antigen tests, are less accurate than PCR tests, but they offer results very quickly and are easier to perform.

The cabinet decided to transfer responsibility for enforcement of coronavirus regulations to the Public Security Ministry.

On Thursday, Brig.-Gen. (res.) Amos Ben Avraham was appointed as the ministry’s commissioner responsible for enforcing coronavirus quarantines.

Ben Avraham will head the coronavirus enforcement headquarters, which will coordinate the necessary operations, including the use of advanced technology and coordination between various bodies, such as the police, local authorities and the Airports Authority, the Public Security Ministry said.

Some 765 new cases of the novel coronavirus were reported in Israel on Wednesday, with 1.38% of tests returning positive, the Health Ministry reported Thursday morning.

The figure marks the highest number of new infections since March. Until a month ago, 10 to 20 new virus carriers were identified every day.

Serious morbidity has also increased. Some 54 patients were in serious condition on Thursday. A week ago, there were 41. In April, with about 5,300 active cases, a similar number as now, more than 320 patients were in serious condition.

The likely explanation is that among the current virus carriers, some 2,000 are schoolchildren, and half of them were fully vaccinated. Both groups are very unlikely to develop severe forms of the disease.

Two people succumbed to the virus on Wednesday, bringing the total number of victims since the beginning of July to 11. Nine people died of COVID-19 during June.

Blue Jackets goalie died of fireworks blast at coach’s home

Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Matiss Kivlenieks died in a freak fireworks accident at the Michigan home of the team’s goaltending coach — on the same day as his daughter’s wedding, according to reports.

Kivlenieks, 24, was in a hot tub at the home of Manny Legace in Novi when a mortar-style firework tilted slightly and struck him in the chest Sunday as it fired toward a group of people.

The wedding of Legace’s daughter, Sabrina, to real estate agent Nick Howell, was held at the home earlier in the day, the Daily Mail reported.

Teammate Elvis Merzlikins (left) posted a tribute to Kivlenieks on social media, saying: ‘I really love you, I’ll miss you.’

An ensuing “night of relaxation and uninhibited revelry” was held at the home, with guests clad in Hawaiian-style dress, according to the report, which cited the couple’s wedding website.

Police Lt. Jason Meier said Kivlenieks tried to avoid the fireworks blast while in the hot tub with several other people. Authorities earlier said the Latvian died of an apparent head injury, but preliminary autopsy results released Monday afternoon clarified his cause of death of chest trauma.

“At the moment, we’re pretty certain this was a tragic accident,” Meier said.

The alleged hot tub Kivlenieks was in at the Legace family house when a firework misfired and struck him.

Legace declined to comment when reached early Monday, the Detroit News reported. The president of a neighborhood homeowner association, Kendall Joy, confirmed to the newspaper that the incident occurred at Legace’s home. The goaltending coach and former NHL netminder joined the team in 2018, according to his team bio.

Kivlenieks’ teammate and fellow Latvian native, Elvis Merzlikins, posted a photo of the pair on Instagram in Hawaiian shirts, thanking Kivleniek for being such an “amazing person” and sharing details of their final moments together.

“I really love you, I’ll miss you, we had our last basketball game in the pool and we enjoyed before you left me right after,” Merzlikins wrote. “We love you and fly high baby, fly high! You saved your last puck! You will be our guardian angel.”

Police said Kivlenieks was roughly 10 feet away from the mortar when he was struck, the Daily Mail reported. He died from a percussive injury caused by the blast, causing major damage to his heart and lungs.

Firefighters and paramedics responded to Legace’s home at about 10:15 p.m. Sunday. Kivlenieks told one teammate not to get into the ambulance with him, according to the Daily Mail.

“[Kivlenieks] didn’t want him to have to see that,” the late goalie’s agent, Jay Grossman, told the outlet.

Kivlenieks, a native of Riga, Lativa, who signed with the Blue Jackets in 2017, was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

A moment of silence was held for Kivlenieks prior to Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Monday between Tampa Bay and Montreal. The Canadiens won Game 4, but trail the Lightning 3-1 in the series. Tampa Bay’s coach, Jon Cooper, addressed Kivleniek’s family after his team’s overtime loss.

“It’s an awful tragedy for anybody, any family to go through that,” Cooper told reporters. “But somebody in the NHL family, as close as we all are as the teams even battling out there, from all the Lightning, our condolences.”
