Kliff Kingsbury: Cardinals had “no idea” J.J. Watt was announcing retirement

Getty Images

The Cardinals found out that J.J. Watt was retiring at exactly the same time the rest of us did.

Coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters on Wednesday that the team had “no idea” Watt would be announcing his retirement when he did it.

It’s unclear why Watt didn’t bother to share the information with his current employer before telling the world. His contract expires after the season, so it’s not as if he’s walking away with time left on his deal.

Maybe Watt simply didn’t trust the Cardinals to keep it quiet. When Watt deliberately announced that he’d had an issue with his heart, he did it because someone had said something to someone in the media about it, forcing his hand.

Regardless, the Cardinals didn’t know it was coming. Which is definitely a little weird.

JJ Watt, Arizona Cardinals defensive end, to retire after this season

CNN
 —

Arizona Cardinals defensive end JJ Watt, one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, will retire after the 2022 season, he announced on Tuesday.

Watt, the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, said he played his “last ever” home game this past Sunday, a 19-16 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“My heart is filled with nothing but love and gratitude,” Watt wrote on Twitter. “It’s been an absolute honor and a pleasure.”

Arizona’s remaining two games of the season are on the road – at the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday and at the San Francisco 49ers on January 8.

Known as a dominant pass rusher, Watt is likely bound for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, for which he will be eligible in 2028.

The 33-year-old was named Defensive Player of the Year three times, tied for most in league history with Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald and New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor.

The seven-time All Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection, according to the NFL, was selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans where he played his first 10 seasons. He owns the Texans franchise record for the most career sacks with 101.

In March 2021, he signed a two-year contract with the Cardinals as a free agent. CNN has reached out to the Cardinals for comment.

Watt is well-known for his work off the field.

After Hurricane Harvey devastated areas around Houston and the rest of the Gulf Coast in August 2017, Watt embarked on what would be his most career-defining charitable effort to date.

Through a YouCaring campaign and plenty of social media attention and help from some famous friends, Watt raised more than $37 million for victims of the floods and damage Harvey left behind. Because of his fundraising, he was awarded the 2017 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, which is given to honor the charity and volunteer efforts of NFL players.

Watt has two brothers, T.J. and Derek, who play in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The three Watt brothers played college football at the University of Wisconsin.

JJ Watt revealed in a social media post earlier this season that he underwent treatment for atrial fibrillation – an irregular heartbeat described by many sufferers as a “quiver,” “flutter,” or “flip-flop” of the heart.

2022 NFL trade deadline: J.J. Watt, Jerry Jeudy among 10 players who should be dealt as Nov. 1 draws closer

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. Christian McCaffrey, James Robinson, Robert Quinn and Kadarius Toney are a few of the notable names who already have been moved, but deadlines spur action. Who should be moved prior to the window closing? Here are 10 players who are in need of a change of scenery:

Short of a renegotiated contract, it is difficult to envision Cooks being moved before the deadline. His cap hits over the next two years are insanely high for a 29-year-old wide receiver. He is a productive player and the ideal candidate for a team looking for a veteran addition at the position. In eight seasons, he has had at least 42 receptions and is averaging 73 receptions per season. Through six games this season, Cooks has 28 receptions for 281 yards and one touchdown.

There were murmurings that Gesicki may not be a good fit for what new head coach Mike McDaniel was wanting to do on offense shortly after the latter took the job. Those murmurings still exist and that is why fans are hearing Gesicki’s name bandied about in the media. Through seven games, he has amassed 18 receptions for 197 yards and three touchdowns. The Penn State product is on pace for the fewest receptions that he has recorded since his rookie season but is in line to be in the end zone more than any other season. Miami could look to move Gesicki to a team in the market to fill a more predominant pass-catching role.

Cleveland is unlikely to reach the postseason after displaying an inability to close games early in 2022. Hunt is a free agent this offseason and it is essentially a foregone conclusion that the Browns will not be looking to match his demands as Nick Chubb’s backup. The team has 2022 fifth-round draft pick Jerome Ford, 2021 sixth-round pick Demetric Felton Jr. and last year’s darling D’Ernest Johnson waiting in the wings.

From an efficiency standpoint, Hunt’s numbers are down this season and yet he has still managed four touchdowns. The running back missed eight games last season; the only games he has missed since serving his suspension in 2019. Since the conclusion of the 2018 season, he has accumulated 385 carries, nearly the equivalent of Derrick Henry’s 2020 season.

Ioannidis has been one of the more underrated players throughout his career. The 28-year-old recorded 4.5 sacks or more in three of his first four seasons. Ioannidis was another one of the Temple products who former head coach Matt Rhule had collected and is playing out the final year of his contract with the organization. As the Panthers turn their eyes to the future, it would make sense for them to move on from Ioannidis if the price is right. There is a shortage of quality interior defenders around the league so there should be a market for the veteran.

Wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. could also be on the chopping block.

Once a prized free agent signing, Jackson has not been a fit for what Washington wants to do on defense. The 30-year-old essentially has one more year left on his deal that carries a cap hit of $13.8 million, which is probably the reason it is taking so long to find a suitable partner. A report surfaced stating that the cornerback was seeking a trade but he has publicly refuted that report. He is a name to know as teams explore cornerback options.

Jeudy is having his best season since joining the Broncos but it comes during the offensive depression of 2022. He is tied for the sixth most drops (4) in the NFL this season. The former No. 15 overall selection has two full years remaining on his rookie contract. A team will be interested in Jeudy because of the potential and reasonable financial control. Is Denver, though, motivated to move him?

New York likely fielded several calls about the potential availability of second-year wide receiver Elijah Moore before declaring that he was unavailable. After years of player empowerment, some organizations have learned that they do have leverage and it is not always in the best interest of the team to move on from the player. Moore has been productive and his contract is very appealing each of the next two years relative to the rising wide receiver market.

The idea of moving on from Mims could be mutually beneficial given he has just nine receptions since making 23 catches for 357 yards as a rookie. The former second-round pick may not bring much value in return but that could be more of a reason to move him now while he does have value. New York is already investing a large percentage of its repetitions to Garrett Wilson, Corey Davis and Moore.

The 29-year-old is in the final year of his contract. He has been effective since joining the team as a fourth-round pick in 2016 but his value may be higher elsewhere than it is on a 2-5 Saints team. On the other hand, New Orleans is still in the running in the mediocre NFC South. Would it be worth it to keep Onyemata to compete for the division knowing that there is no hope of winning a Super Bowl? The Saints are now faced with that decision on Onyemata and others, like wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

Payne is in the final year of his rookie contract so he is due to be a free agent after the season. Washington has some big upcoming decisions along its defensive line. Defensive tackle Jonathan Allen has already received a big contract extension, edge rusher Montez Sweat is due soon and edge rusher Chase Young is not far behind. Two draft picks were spent on the interior defensive line as part of the 2022 class. In a way, it felt as though the franchise was planning for the inevitability of moving on from Payne, who at 25 is a good player and a valuable commodity in the trade market.

Watt is in the final year of his deal with Arizona. Similar to the Saints, the Cardinals are in the running in the NFC West so they may not be motivated to deal. However, it would be entertaining to see him play for a frontline contender like Kansas City before his career comes to an end. The Wisconsin product has 2.5 sacks this season.

Report: ‘Optimism’ T.J. Watt Will Only Miss A Month With Pec Injury

Following up on yesterday’s report from Pro Football Talk over the Pittsburgh Steelers’ “hope” T.J. Watt didn’t suffer a fully torn pec muscle Sunday, CBS’ Jonathan Jones is saying similar. He tweeted out there is “optimism” that Watt’s injury is only a partial tear and could miss only roughly one month of action.

Watt is set to undergo a MRI Monday, though I imagine that’s already taken place and Pittsburgh’s received initial results. While the team hasn’t announced anything, this report indicates the information the team is getting is encouraging. Watt suffered the injury to his left pectoral late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s win over the Bengals, immediately leaving the field and heading to the locker room. Prior to the injury, he has his typical dominant self, recording a sack, pass deflection, and interception against the Bengals.

Even if this report is true, Watt likely still would land on injured reserve but he’d be able to return after four weeks. Malik Reed will be next man up until Watt comes back.

As we noted yesterday, take everything with a grain of salt until there’s an official, confirmed report, but it’s looking better and better that Watt will suit up this season. And perhaps sooner than initially anticipated.

UPDATE (1:26 PM): Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Steelers may not have an official timeline on Watt’s injury until tomorrow. Watt is likely to seek a second opinion and he notes the team is weighing rehab versus surgery.

Here’s the full text of what he said.

“Yeah, it is a pectoral injury. T.J. Watt having an MRI today to determine the extent of it. My understanding is we may not get firm word on the injury to T.J. Watt, how long he is out and what the next step is until tomorrow. He’s going to get a second opinion, likely to have a couple different doctors review the scans.

“And the reason why, and this is my understanding of the current situation, is that Watt and the Steelers are still trying to figure out does he need surgery, which would knock him out to at least the end of the season, or can he rehab and return in a couple weeks? Both of those options are on the table. There is a possibility that he does not need surgery immediately, which would be great. That would mean it’s more of a pec strain than a full tear, but more information coming likely within the next 24 hours.”

And here’s what he said on Harris’ foot injury suffered yesterday.

“This is related, to my understanding, to the Lisfranc sprain that he had early on in camp. Kind of tweaked that a little bit. As of right now, doesn’t appear to be major. That is the general feel. But he had an MRI this morning, still getting more tests to determine; is there something else here or is it just a small reaggravation of a previous injury?”

Update (2:34 PM): Rapoport seems to echo Jones’ report, suggesting Watt “has options” and may only miss 3-4 games. Still, he cautions there won’t be official word until tomorrow.

UPDATE (2:52 PM): ESPN’s Adam Schefter lays out the same scenario as Rapoport, saying the team is unsure if Watt needs surgery or can rehab it. If the latter, Schefter lays out a timeline of returning in six weeks.

Pittsburgh Steelers believe T.J. Watt suffered torn pec as he, Najee Harris leave OT win against Cincinnati Bengals with injuries

The Pittsburgh Steelers believe star pass-rusher and reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt suffered a torn pectoral during Sunday’s 23-20 overtime win against the Bengals in Cincinnati, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Watt is scheduled to undergo scans Monday to confirm the diagnosis, the source said.

The Steelers didn’t provide any additional details postgame, with coach Mike Tomlin only saying that Watt was being evaluated for an upper-body injury.

Both Watt and running back Najee Harris (foot) exited with injuries in the fourth quarter and were ruled out.

Harris suffered a foot injury as the Steelers attempted to run out the clock, and he limped off the field. He was dealing with a Lisfranc sprain in his foot during training camp, but he said earlier this week he was healthy.

Watt came off the field a couple of plays later with his injury and went straight to the locker room.

“Having TJ out there definitely benefits us. He’s a leader. He’s the Defensive Player of the Year,” teammate Cameron Heyward said. “However long it takes, other guys gotta step up. Alex (Highsmith) stepped up pretty good today. Malik (Reed) and Jamir (Jones) are coming along. We had to do some different stuff out there, but we rally around him. And when he gets back, we’ll be ready.”

After the game, Harris was spotted wearing a protective boot as he left the locker room. Beyond the second-year player, the Steelers have a relatively thin and inexperienced running back room. Rookie undrafted free agent Jaylen Warren took the bulk of the snaps when Harris went down, and 2019 fourth-round pick Benny Snell is also an option. He had only 36 carries last season for 98 yards, but the Kentucky product started in place of James Conner five times in 2019 and 2020.

The Steelers also have 2020 fourth-round pick Anthony McFarland on the practice squad.

The positional depth behind Watt is also thin.

Highsmith started every game at right outside linebacker opposite of Watt last season. The Steelers added Reed via trade with the Denver Broncos earlier this month. He started 13 games for the Broncos in each of the past two seasons. The team also picked up Jones on waivers, bringing him back to Pittsburgh after he saw action in three games with the Steelers last season.

“Praying that everything’s going to be all right,” Highsmith said of Watt. “I know a guy like him, that’s gonna hurt him that he’s not out there because he loves football so much. We’re just going to rally around him. We’ve got the guys to just be able to step in and deliver if he’s not able to go.”
