Watch 1 Billion Years of Shifting Tectonic Plates in 40 Mesmerizing Seconds : ScienceAlert

The tectonic plates that cover Earth like a jigsaw puzzle move about as fast as our fingernails grow, but over the course of a billion years that’s enough to travel across the entire planet – as a fascinating video reveals.

In one of the most complete models of tectonic plate movements ever put together, scientists in 2021 condensed 1 billion years of movement into a 40-second video clip, so we can see how these giant slabs of rock have interacted over time.

As they move, the plates affect climate, tidal patterns, animal movements and their evolution, volcanic activity, the production of metals, and more: they’re more than just a covering for the planet, they’re a life support system that affects everything that lives on the surface.

frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen>

“For the first time a complete model of tectonics has been built, including all the boundaries,” geoscientist Michael Tetley, who completed his PhD at the University of Sydney, explained to Euronews in 2021.

“On a human timescale, things move in centimeters per year, but as we can see from the animation, the continents have been everywhere in time. A place like Antarctica that we see as a cold, icy inhospitable place today, actually was once quite a nice holiday destination at the equator.”

The moving and sliding of the plates is quite a sight if you check out the video – land masses that are near neighbors become distant cousins and vice versa, and you might be surprised at just how recently it was that the countries and continents settled into the positions that we know today.

Understanding these movements and patterns is crucial if scientists want to predict how habitable our planet will be in the future, and where we’re going to find the metal resources we need to ensure a clean energy future.

Plate movement is estimated through the study of the geological record – the magnetism that provides data on substrates’ historic positions in respect to Earth’s spin axis and the types of material locked in rock samples that help match the pieces of past geological plate puzzles together.

Here the team went to great lengths to choose and combine the most suitable models currently available, looking at both the movements of the continents and the interactions along plate boundaries.

“Planet Earth is incredibly dynamic, with the surface composed of plates that constantly jostle each other in a way unique among the known rocky planets,” said geoscientist Sabin Zahirovic, from the University of Sydney.

“These plates move at the speed fingernails grow, but when a billion years is condensed into 40 seconds a mesmerizing dance is revealed. Oceans open and close, continents disperse and periodically recombine to form immense supercontinents.”

The further scientists go into the past, the more difficult it becomes to estimate how plates have moved, and in this case the Neoproterozoic to Cambrian (1,000 to 520 million years ago) eras in particular were carefully charted and brought in line to match the more modern records that we have.

Questions remain about how these plates first formed and when this formation happened, but every new data point helps us to understand the ancient history of Earth – even accounting for missing plates in some models.

The scientists admit that their work lacks some finer detail – stretched as it is across the entire planet and a billion years – but they’re hoping that it can act as a useful resource and foundation for the future study of these movements and the impact they have on everything else on the planet.

“Our team has created an entirely new model of Earth evolution over the last billion years,” said geoscientist Dietmar Müller from the University of Sydney.

“Our planet is unique in the way that it hosts life. But this is only possible because geological processes, like plate tectonics, provide a planetary life-support system.”

The research has been published in Earth-Science Reviews.

Google Pixel Watch will get at least 3 years of Wear OS updates

As part of the Pixel Watch rollout, Google has detailed that the Wear OS device will get “at least” 3 years of updates.

That period starts “from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US.” The first-generation Pixel Watch will get “guaranteed software updates until at least” October 2025.

Google says “software updates include Google Pixel Watch security updates, and may include feature drops and other software updates.”

With watches and “Guaranteed software updates,” the company is not making the phone distinction between “Guaranteed Android version updates” and “Guaranteed security updates.” Wear OS 3.5 is based on Android 11, and past history (Android 9) would suggest the next major Wear OS release is built off Android 13. However, most updates to the wearable platform are delivered as apps/services via the Play Store.

One thing to note about this “Learn when you’ll get software updates on Google Pixel Watch” support article is that the company is using nearly identical language as the page for Pixel phone updates. That said, it’s not surprising Google is carrying over the concept of “feature drops” to the Pixel Watch. Those quarterly releases were highlighted at the Pixel 7 launch as a selling point.

Meanwhile, in terms of the frequency of Pixel Watch updates, Google only says they will occur in a “regular” manner. The Pixel phone support document also says the same thing, but we know that occurs monthly.

Looking at the broader Wear OS landscape, it’s not clear if Google will deliver security patches every month for the Pixel Watch. Looking at the Galaxy Watch 4, Samsung did have a period earlier this year where there were three security patch level updates (2022-01, -03, and -05) over the course of three months (February to May), but there’s otherwise no consistency. Samsung has promised “up to” 4 years of updates, while the Apple Watch Series 3 got almost 5 years of updates.

Hot take: Google Pixel 7, 7 Pro lack in innovation, Pixel Watch has big shoes to fill

In typical Google fashion, leaks of Google’s next-generation hardware were aplenty, only this time Google didn’t wait to reveal its fall lineup – instead teasing early renders during Google I/O in May. The Pixel event wrapped Thursday morning, but there were no surprises left to announce if you were following leaks in past few weeks.

We have a new Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel Watch, and we got a glimpse of Google’s upcoming Pixel Tablet. The launch event took place live and in-person with some pre-recorded segments. While it was nice to see a live event, I feel like a pre-recorded event would have been shorter and to the point.

Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are incremental upgrades

There were some improvements to the Pixel 7 duo. A new Tensor G2 chipset boosts the performance and AI processing for photography with an improved GPU outputting photography tasks at faster rates, a new modem, and the Tensor core. These changes are welcome improvements to the Pixel 6’s first-generation Tensor.

But all things considered, the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro don’t deviate much from the Pixel 6 series in either hardware or features. The 7 Pro’s ultrawide camera is new and has autofocus for macro photography, and Google’s Super Res Zoom has improved. Other new features like Photo Unblur and a cinematic recording mode don’t really excite the average smartphone user.

The new phones represent a refinement of the Pixel 6 and they feel more like refreshed versions of their predecessors than true successors. On the upside Google keeps pricing the same as last year’s Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, which is really appreciated.

The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are important for the expansion of the markets that Google services. This year, the Pixel flagships are arriving to a few more countries, but still trails far behind other premium smartphone makers in market availability.

Pixel Watch is cute, but it has a lot to refine

The Pixel Watch feels a couple of years late. Sure, Google (and many other tech companies) experienced severe supply chain constraints in 2020, and so the Pixel Watch is a first-generation product that has a lot to prove. For Google’s Wear OS and for Google’s little Pixel ecosystem it has going on.

The Pixel Watch’s design and style are sleek and fashion-forward. Paired with Wear OS, the vibe emitting from the Pixel Watch is bubbly and helpful.

Fitbit integration with Wear OS shows the first major benefit of the Fitbit acquisition. While the Pixel Watch is the first Wear OS device with integration of the platform, Google currently sells a Fitbit model that’s cheaper than the Pixel Watch’s $349 price point with more comprehensive fitness tracking features.

Different styles of bands available for the Pixel Watch

Software features announced were not anything new. Google gave plenty of examples of things you can do with the Pixel Watch that were already possible on older Wear OS watches. Of course, the face lift it got is welcome but long overdue.

The Pixel Watch has big shoes to fill as the poster child of Wear OS. The company promises 24 hours of battery life, which sounds like charging will be a daily affair. Still, it is too early to make a judgement on endurance.

The Google Pixel Watch

The Price of the Pixel Watch seems high. Even when positioned next to Fossil’s lineup of designer Wear OS watches, the Pixel Watch should be able to keep up with looks. Even without seeing the smartwatch, a $299 price point would seem more appropriate, but still on the pricey side.

The Pixel Watch is expected to be like an Apple Watch equivalent for Android phones, so expectations are very high.

Pixel Tablet teases a versatile smart home display

Google did reveal some new angles of the Pixel Tablet, but it was more of an extended teaser since the new Pixel Tablet won’t arrive until next year. Google’s efforts to improve the Android for the tablet form factor have been apparent since its introduction of Android 12L.

The Pixel Tablet takes an approach that blurs the line between a portable large-screened device and one of Google’s Home Hub smart displays. The charging speaker dock makes the Tablet double as a smart display that shows relevant information when docked. It will listen for and respond to Google Assistant commands.

The Pixel Tablet with wireless charging speaker combo make it an ideal device for casually sharing with other family members in the house. We hope Google has plans to show the Pixel Tablet with a productivity-focused accessory like a kind of magnetic folio keyboard.

This year’s event slightly progressed the Pixel brand further

With no major changes to the Pixel lineup and a seemingly underwhelming Pixel Watch, this year’s Made by Google event showcased incremental updates to the Google Pixel and an overdue entry to Google’s Wear OS first-party release.

Compared to Apple and Samsung, Google is still far behind in sales volumes, but it is aiming to ship more Pixels next year, and even more the year after that. The Google Pixel Watch is expected to be the Apple Watch equivalent of Android phones and based on what Google’s announced on Thursday, it has a lot of work to do to get there.

Watch the Classic Running Fully Playable at 60 FPS

Since the dawn of time (give or take a few years), mankind has challenged itself to get id Software’s 1993 classic Doom running on the most outlandish and impractical hardware and software possible: refrigerators, calculators, pregnancy tests, etc. One time, somebody got Doom to run inside of Doom. Today, YouTuber Samperson (Sam Chiet) demonstrated that he has Doom running in Notepad at 60 frames per second. Yes, this is Notepad the basic text editor program that comes preinstalled in every Windows computer, but it’s using its text to recreate the visuals of Doom.

Samperson insists the footage in the clip below has not been sped up, the code for Notepad.exe has not been modified at all, and this is genuinely playable and not a trick. He plans to release Notepad Doom to the public in the next couple days, if you would like to experience the black-and-white carnage for yourself.

If you’re looking for a technical explanation of how Samperson got this running, I’m really not the guy for the job. But it appears Notepad is simply being used as the equivalent of a TV screen, while other software is doing all the real work of running the game and translating its visuals into a comprehensible text visualization for Notepad to display. Still, it’s yet another fun way that Doom has achieved a weird, weird immortality, and maybe you can give it a shot if you’ve played Doom Eternal to death.

New York Giants at Green Bay Packers (London)

Time: Sunday, 9:30 a.m. ET (NFL Network), stream on fuboTV (try for free)
Open: Packers -8

Featured Game | Green Bay Packers vs. New York Giants

“The Packers offense struggled to get it going against the Patriots and barely beat the Patriots, who featured a third-string quarterback most of the day. That can’t happen two weeks in a row, right? The Giants don’t seem to be as tough a matchup for Aaron Rodgers and Co., and you have to think the Packers will focus all their attention on stopping Saquon Barkley in this game. If Davis Webb is the QB, the straight line for this game should be double-digits, so act now to lock in this teaser leg.”

SportsLine NFL expert R.J. White likes dropping the Packers down to -2 this week in a teaser. To see his other teaser legs for this weekend, head on over to SportsLine.

Miami Dolphins at New York Jets

Time: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS), stream on Paramount+ (click here)
Open: Dolphins -3

Featured Game | New York Jets vs. Miami Dolphins

“The Jets have lost 12 straight divisional games and in the two games they won this season, they trailed by double digits in both. That’s a tall order to keep games close, especially in a situation like this with Miami on extended rest and New York’s offensive line in tatters. Sure, Zach Wilson had a wild ride to comeback on the Steelers last week, but he’s erratic and looked very much the part of a developmental QB in the first three quarters. I like Mike McDaniel to get the best of another former 49ers assistant, Robert Saleh, here. Teddy Bridgewater is 24-6 against the spread all time on the road, he has elite weapons and speed around him and this Jets defense hasn’t been what I thought it would be up front. Has Miami been overvalued thus far? Perhaps. But the same goes for the Jets, too.”

SportsLine NFL Insider Jason La Canfora likes the Dolphins this week. For his best bets in Week 5, head on over to SportsLine.

Tennessee Titans at Washington Commanders

Time: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS), stream on Paramount+ (click here)
Open: Commanders -1

Featured Game | Washington Commanders vs. Tennessee Titans

“The Titans have saved their season with back-to-back wins, while the Commanders offense has looked atrocious the last two weeks. That means it’s the perfect time to take Washington here, as we’re fading a team with high stock and buying a team with low stock. Tennessee’s defense is 30th in pass yards per play, a far departure from the units Washington played the last two weeks. Washington’s edge rush should be a problem for Tennessee’s tackles, and the Treylon Burks injury lowers the ceiling of the Titans passing attack. The lookahead here was PK, and I don’t think these teams are much different than they were a week ago.” — SportsLine’s R.J. White

White has been SportsLine’s No. 1 expert for the past five years and has delivered a 56.8% hit rate on his SuperContest picks. To see where he is leaning for his Circa Million picks this week, go check out SportsLine.

Los Angeles Chargers at Cleveland Browns

Time: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS), stream on Paramount+ (click here)
Open: Chargers -3

Featured Game | Cleveland Browns vs. Los Angeles Chargers

“This is a team that’s playing back-to-back road games, I usually don’t like that outside the division. But look, we thought the (Chargers) offensive line would be a disaster. That Salyer kid went in there and played really well for them. The rookie at left tackle held up. I think they are going to be able to score. I think the Browns defense — I know they get guys back — but the Browns defense isn’t good. Particularly in the back end, they’ve been giving up a lot of big plays. I think this is a good spot for Herbert, I’ll take the Chargers in this game minus the points.”

That’s Pete Prisco’s take from the Pick Six Podcast, where he, Will Brinson and R.J. White broke down every game from a gambling perspective and gave out best bets on Friday — as they do every week. Give it a listen below and subscribe for great NFL content in your feed daily.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Buffalo Bills

Time: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS), stream on Paramount+ (click here)
Open: Bills -9

Featured Game | Buffalo Bills vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

“A rematch of the Week 1 stunner from last year features an entirely new Pittsburgh QB situation, which has evolved over the last 96 hours or so. Kenny Pickett is in and Mitchell Trubisky is out. Pickett threw three picks against the Jets in a loss, but Pro Football Focus didn’t give a turnover-worthy grade on any of those throws. Pickett became the first quarterback in NFL history to run for two touchdowns in his debut. The Bills are just too much — Pittsburgh has never won without T.J. Watt and slowing down Stefon Diggs will be problematic for a secondary that’s allowed top-tier wideouts to explode. Three great stats here in addition to the Watt thing: 1) Sean McDermott/Mike Tomlin are 3-0 to the under all time, I expect it to continue; 2) the Bills have allowed seven total second-half points this season; 3) the Bills have the most wins (12) by 14-plus points since the start of 2021 and the next-closest team has seven.”

CBS Sports senior analyst and Pick Six Podcast host Will Brinson is on the Bills to cover the big number this week. To read his breakdown of each game this weekend and his best bets, click here.

Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Time: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (Fox), stream on fuboTV (try for free)
Open: Buccaneers -11

Featured Game | Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Atlanta Falcons

“Atlanta has been a betting darling through the first month of the season. They own a 4-0 ATS record that includes a tightly contested game against the defending champion Rams and back-to-back wins against Seattle and Cleveland. However, the clock looks like it’ll strike midnight on this run in Week 5 when they visit the Buccaneers.

Even if you put the 28-3 jokes aside, Tom Brady has historically destroyed the Falcons. Brady is 10-0 in his career against Atlanta (including playoffs), making him one of just four quarterbacks in NFL history to have double-digit wins and zero losses against one opponent. Brady has also performed extremely well when his teams have lost back-to-back games like the Bucs just did. In his career, he’s 14-0 SU and 12-2 ATS immediately after a two-game losing streak. His teams also own a +19.6 points per game differential in those games.”

Tyler Sullivan says this is the week to back Tom Brady. To read his Week 5 picks column, click here.

Seattle Seahawks at New Orleans Saints

Time: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (Fox), stream on fuboTV (try for free)
Open: Saints -4.5

Featured Game | New Orleans Saints vs. Seattle Seahawks

Before you make any Week 5 NFL picks or NFL parlays, you need to see what SportsLine senior analyst Larry Hartstein has to say. A former lead writer for Covers and The Linemakers, Hartstein combines a vast network of Vegas sources with an analytical approach he honed while working for Pro Football Focus. He entered the 2022 NFL season 427-344 all-time on NFL side picks (plus $3,764 for $100 players), including 394-330 against the spread. Hartstein went 68-50 ATS and 8-3 on money-line plays last season for a profit of $1,552.

Now, Hartstein has locked in three confident Week 5 NFL best bets. If you successfully parlay his picks, you’re looking at a payout of almost 6-1. We can tell you Hartstein loves the Saints to cover against the Seahawks. To read his reasoning and to see his other two spread picks that he’s including in his parlay, head on over to SportsLine.

Houston Texans at Jacksonville Jaguars

Time: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS), stream on Paramount+ (click here)
Open: Jaguars -3.5

Featured Game | Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Houston Texans

“The Jaguars are coming off a sloppy loss against the Eagles that they let get away after leading 14-0. The Texans played well in coming back against the Chargers, but this is a tough trip against a team that will be ready to get back on track. Look for a better showing by Trevor Lawrence as the Jaguars win it.”

CBS Sports senior NFL writer Pete Prisco likes the Jaguars to cover seven points this Sunday. To read his breakdown of every game in Week 5, click here.

Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings

Time: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (Fox), stream on fuboTV (try for free)
Open: Vikings -5.5

Featured Game | Minnesota Vikings vs. Chicago Bears

“I made fading the Bears a best bet last week and it cashed, so let’s do it again. The Chicago Bears-New York Giants matchup was wild to me. Matt Eberflus was slow to adjust to Brian Daboll’s effective bootleg rollouts, and then the Bears’ offensive play-calling was confusing. The Bears went 0-for-3 in the red zone last week and seemed like they were playing for field goals the entire matchup. There was even an instance on third-and-6 where Chicago dialed up an underneath tight end screen on New York’s 14-yard line that went for a loss of 3 yards. I don’t like this offense.

I was surprised that the Vikings were separated from overtime against a short-handed New Orleans Saints team by just a double-doink. Without Jameis Winston, Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas, you would expect the Vikings to roll, but that did not happen. I also don’t love that Minnesota doesn’t get its bye week after its trip to London, but this pick is more about fading the Bears than it is supporting the Vikes. Chicago has the second-worst offense in the league (274.8 yards of total offense per game) and the worst passing attack by far in the NFL, as the Bears average just 97.5 passing yards per game. Every other NFL team averages at least 139 passing yards per contest. I like this number better at MIN -7, but give me the Vikings.”

CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani isn’t afraid of a London hangover. To read his Week 5 picks column, click here.

Detroit Lions at New England Patriots

Time: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (Fox), stream on fuboTV (try for free)
Open: Patriots -6.5

Featured Game | New England Patriots vs. Detroit Lions

Before you make your Week 5 NFL survivor picks, you need to see which team the SportsLine Projection Model is backing. The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up almost $7,000 for $100 players on top-rated NFL picks since its inception. The model enters Week 4 of the 2022 NFL season on an incredible 139-103 run on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season.

Despite their underdog status, the Week 5 model loves the Patriots here. However, they aren’t the only team the model likes this week. For the full results from our advanced computer model, head on over to SportsLine.

San Francisco 49ers at Carolina Panthers

Time: Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET (CBS), stream on Paramount+ (click here)
Open: 49ers -3.5

Featured Game | Carolina Panthers vs. San Francisco 49ers

“The Carolina Panthers are the most unwatchable team in the NFL. If Watchability Rankings aren’t a thing yet, they should be, and the Panthers would be 32nd for four straight weeks. The 49ers should stomp Carolina — the only concern is how the San Francisco offensive line handles a good Panthers pass rush. Can Jimmy Garoppolo score 21 points? I say yes, which means the Niners win this one and probably cover with the way that defense is playing right now.”

CBS Sports senior analyst and Pick Six Podcast host Will Brinson is fading Carolina this week. To read his breakdown of each game this weekend and his best bets, click here.

Philadelphia Eagles at Arizona Cardinals

Time: Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET (Fox), stream on fuboTV (try for free)
Open: Cardinals -3

Featured Game | Arizona Cardinals vs. Philadelphia Eagles

“The Eagles are one of the top teams in the NFL this season, and they have covered in each of their past three games after failing to do so in their season opener against the Detroit Lions. I’ve made them a best bet to cover in each of the past two weeks, so why stop now? The Eagles look like a complete team to me. Jalen Hurts and the offense have been the headline — and I can understand why. The Eagles lead the NFL in “big plays” this season with 36. If you were wondering, “big plays” are rushes of at least 10 yards and passes of at least 20 yards.

The Eagles have run 184 offensive plays with the lead this season, which is the most in the NFL, while the Cardinals have run 13 offensive plays with the lead this season, which is the worst in the NFL. The Cardinals defense has been interesting to watch, as they blitz at the highest rate in the NFL (41%), but are allowing a 125.8 passer rating with blitz, which ranks No. 29 in the NFL. Hmm.

Arizona doesn’t really have home-field advantage, as the Cardinals have lost seven straight home games — which is the longest such streak in the NFL. But here’s the key stat: The Cards have failed to cover in all seven of those home games as well.”

CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani is on Philly once again this week. To read his Week 5 picks column, click here.

Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Rams

Time: Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET (Fox), stream on fuboTV (try for free)
Open: Rams -5.5

Featured Game | Los Angeles Rams vs. Dallas Cowboys

“As much as I’d like to ramble on here about how the Cowboys are only good because of Cooper Rush, I’m not going to do that because it’s not exactly true. The Cowboys are 3-1 right now because their defense is destroying everyone: They can stop the run, they can stop the pass and they are exceptionally good at embarrassing opposing quarterbacks.

The Cowboys have totaled 15 sacks this season, which is the second-highest total in the NFL. On the other hand, the Rams offensive line has been banged up all year, which has turned the first four weeks of the season into a nightmare for Matthew Stafford.

If you saw what happened to Stafford in Week 1 — he got sacked seven times against the Bills — then you got a taste of what might happen to him this week.  If you saw what happened to Matthew Stafford on Monday night — he got sacked seven times against the 49ers — then you got a taste of what might happen to him this week. Stafford has been sacked 16 times this season, which is tied for the second-most in the NFL, and based on what I’ve seen from the Cowboys defense, they might double that total.

The problem for the Rams is that they almost never win win Stafford gets sacked two or more times in a game. In Stafford’s 22 regular season games with the team, the Rams are 11-1 when he gets sacked one time or less, but just 3-6 when he gets sacked multiple times. Basically, the Rams have a tough time winning when Stafford is getting beat up.

The other thing about the Cowboys defense is that no one can score on them. The Cowboys have yet to surrender 20 points in any game this year, which is impressive when you consider that they’ve already faced quarterbacks like Joe Burrow and Tom Brady.

Since Dak Prescott went down, the Cowboys’ formula for winning games has been pretty simple: Play great defense and pray that Cooper Rush doesn’t make any mistakes on offense. Well, the prayers have clearly been working because Rush has zero interceptions through four weeks. I have no idea if the Cowboys will be sticking with Rush for one more week or turning the offensive reigns over to Dak Prescott, but I don’t care, I’m taking them no matter what.”

Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens

What To Watch For in the Japanese Grand Prix: Verstappen’s title charge and Vettel’s Suzuka swansong

From the top two in the championship starting on the front row to Alpine well-placed for a big haul, and from Sebastian Vettel excelling on his final Japanese GP to an unsettled weather forecast, we pick out some key areas to keep an eye on in Sunday’s race at Suzuka…

1. A Verstappen vs Leclerc front row

It took a little while to be confirmed after Max Verstappen was investigated for losing control of his car in front of Lando Norris in Q3, but being handed only a reprimand by the stewards means Verstappen starts from pole position as he goes for his second drivers’ championship.

READ MORE: Verstappen beats Leclerc and Sainz to pole position in ultra-close Japanese GP qualifying

The task is a simple one for Verstappen from there. Win the race with the fastest lap and he’s world champion, come what may. But the driver starting alongside him on the front row is the one with the best chance of stopping that from happening this weekend.

Charles Leclerc lines up in second place and if he finishes there and neither driver scores the fastest lap bonus point, then the title will roll on for another race. However, if Verstappen wins and Leclerc slips to third then the championship will be wrapped up at Suzuka.

The start is Leclerc’s best chance to try and get ahead of his main rival and he starts with the inside line for Turn 1 – but on the dirty side of the grid. Should Verstappen not win the race, then Leclerc only needs a top four finish to take the fight on to Austin, or can finish fifth with the fastest lap to do so.

POINTS PERMUTATIONS: What Verstappen needs to do to win his second drivers’ crown in Japan

It’s at that stage we also bring Sergio Perez into the equation, as he starts fourth on the grid behind Carlos Sainz. If Verstappen wins then Perez’s finishing position is irrelevant, but second place for the championship leader will only be good enough if Perez is outside the top three and doesn’t set the fastest lap (and of course Leclerc fails to score the required points). Simples!

2. Alpine’s chance to hit back

The first race of this double-header was a painful one for Alpine, as a solid run from Fernando Alonso in Singapore was ended by a power unit issue that took him out of the race when he was close behind Lando Norris.

Just a few laps later, Esteban Ocon also retired with a reliability issue, opening the door for McLaren to leapfrog them with a big result as both their cars finished in the top five at Marina Bay.

It was a significant turnaround but the gap between the two teams is only four points at this stage and Alpine are in a strong position to deliver an instant response, with Ocon qualifying fifth and Alonso seventh in Suzuka, ahead of the McLaren pair of Norris and Daniel Ricciardo in tenth and eleventh respectively.

Alpine mixed it with Mercedes in qualifying and if they can continue the form in the race then it could put a buffer between themselves and McLaren, as they try and regain fourth place in the constructors’ championship at the first opportunity.

Alonso has McLaren’s P4 in the constructors’ championship in his sights

3. Vettel’s final visit to Suzuka

There was a poignant moment for Sebastian Vettel ahead of what is set to be his last Grand Prix start at Suzuka, when he reached Q3 and then put together an impressive lap to match his best grid position of the season with ninth place.

As he was returning to the pits after his one and only flying lap in the final part of qualifying, Vettel said: “Thank you for the session, I really enjoyed it. This track is so much better than all of the other ones … Arigatou gozaimasu Suzuka, I will miss this place.”

Before he signs off from the iconic circuit, though, Vettel will get 53 laps to try and turn that P9 starting position into what would be his fourth point-scoring finish in six races.

And Aston Martin have tended to be a more formidable force in races than in qualifying, with the four-time world champion finishing a season’s-best sixth in Azerbaijan after starting from the top ten.

This weekend marks Vettel’s last appearance at Suzuka as an F1 driver

4. Fired-up AlphaTauri drivers

While Vettel was delivering emotional radio messages at the end of qualifying, the same can’t be said for Pierre Gasly, who was eliminated in Q1 after AlphaTauri struggled with a brake issue.

Gasly was fuming after the session because he had asked to go out as late as possible to avoid traffic and be able to manage the problem better, something he felt his team mate Yuki Tsunoda was allowed to do.

He might be leaving for Alpine at the end of the season, but Gasly will be on a mission to recover from 17th on the grid at Honda’s home race, as AlphaTauri carries the Japanese manufacturer’s branding here for this first time this year.

Tsunoda was complaining of a similar problem to Gasly but managed to advance to Q2 and will start from 13th on his Japanese Grand Prix debut, and he’ll be desperate to impress in front of his home fans after we were unable to race at Suzuka for the last two seasons.

5. A tasty weather forecast

There’s been all kinds of weather throughout the race weekend so far, with Friday seeing heavy rain, light rain, and no rain, but resulting in completely wet practice sessions – and then Saturday being fully dry but having spells of gusty winds and lower temperatures.

Those have been tricky enough conditions on their own, but the forecast for Sunday is for a mix of the two, with an increasing threat of rain from when the race starts at 1400 local time onwards.

HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the action from qualifying at Suzuka as Verstappen pips Leclerc and Sainz to pole

That’s one of the reasons there was so much running taking place in the wet on Friday, and it could really mix up the competitive order.

Mercedes looked particularly strong in the wet after being able to switch on their tyres, and a high level of downforce suggests their car is in a good place from a set-up point of view to exploit any rain, but Alonso was fastest overall in FP1 and is another driver who says he is relishing the prospect of mixed conditions.

Watch SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch on record-tying 14th mission Friday night

Update for Oct. 7: SpaceX is now targeting a Friday launch at 7:06 p.m. EDT (2306 GMT) to launch its Intelsat G-23/G-24 mission after an automatic abort on Oct. 6. You can watch it above.

SpaceX plans to launch a Falcon 9 rocket on its record-tying 14th mission Friday (Oct. 6), and you can watch the action live.

The Falcon 9, topped with Intelsat’s Galaxy 33 and Galaxy 34 satellites, is scheduled to lift off from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station Thursday during a 69-minute window that opens at 7:06 p.m. EDT (2306 GMT). Watch it live here at Space.com, courtesy of SpaceX, or directly via the company (opens in new tab).

If all goes according to plan, the Falcon 9’s first stage will come back to Earth and land on SpaceX’s A Shortfall of Gravitas droneship about 8.5 minutes after launch. The robotic ship will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean, a few hundred miles off the Florida coast.

It will be the 14th launch and  landing for this particular booster, according to a SpaceX mission description (opens in new tab). The rocket previously helped launch the GPS III-3 and Turksat 5A satellites, the Transporter-2 rideshare mission and 10 big batches of SpaceX’s Starlink internet satellites.

Fourteen missions is the current record for a Falcon 9 first stage, set just last month during a launch that lofted the BlueWalker 3 communications satellite and 34 Starlinks.

The mission timeline calls for Galaxy 33 to be deployed about 33 minutes after liftoff and Galaxy 34 to follow suit five minutes later.

The duo “are the next satellites in Intelsat’s comprehensive Galaxy fleet refresh plan, a new generation of technology that will provide Intelsat Media customers in North America with high-performance media distribution capabilities and unmatched penetration of cable headends,” Luxembourg-based Intelsat wrote in a statement (opens in new tab). “It is critical to Intelsat’s U.S. C-band clearing strategy.”

Friday’s launch will be the third for SpaceX in a two-day stretch. On Wednesday, the company launched the Crew-5 astronaut mission for NASA as well as a batch of 52 Starlink satellites.

The mission was originally supposed to launch on Thursday evening (Oct. 6), but the Falcon 9 initiated an auto abort shortly (opens in new tab) before the planned liftoff.

‘Google Pixel Watch Services’ released on Play Store

Google has various “services” apps on the Play Store, and the latest today supports the Pixel Watch’s health capabilities.

The Play Store description, with a generic settings gear app icon, for Google Pixel Watch Services says it “provides your watch with improved algorithms for sensor processing.” This approach means full system updates are not needed to deliver improvements, with 1.0.9139874 the current version.

The package name is com.google.android.wearable.fitbit.mcu.data, with Fitbit’s James Park on Thursday noting how the “Pixel Watch uses a combination of on-device machine learning and deep optimization, down to the processor level, to give you an accurate measurement of your heart rate continuously at once per second.” As a reminder, that’s the Exynos 9110 SoC and a Cortex M33 co-processor.

Fitbit and Google’s machine learning teams worked on this, with the former claiming this is its “most accurate heart rate tracking yet.” In marketing, that one-second internal is being equated to “track[ing] heart rate like time.”

The creation process involved taking thousands of hours of training data and applying machine learning to “pull all the common patterns both in everyday life during their everyday exercises, learn to reject the noise, and in the end generate an accurate heart rate.”

Meanwhile, the Pixel Watch will get Fall Detection in 2023 and can alert emergency services as necessary.
