Los Angeles spa protest turns violent after alleged transgender exposure incident

Tense protests erupted Saturday outside a California spa where a transgender woman allegedly exposed herself to children, teens and adults in the women’s area.

It happened in Downtown Los Angeles outside Wi Spa on Wilshire Boulevard.

Groups showed up in support of the woman who complained about the incident – but videos from FOX Los Angeles and others shared to social media showed that people from both sides of the transgender rights movement clashed at the scene.

Images show people wearing masks and flak vests, some of them carrying weapons and others waving signs or flags.

Another video shows a mob of people clad in dark clothes and masks, some wearing flak vests bearing the word “PRESS,” mocking and chasing a man down the street. He can be seen wearing a T-shirt that reads “Obey Jesus.” He is punched from behind at least once, and subsequent photos show him with blood running down his face and chest.

The camera pans around and shows the dark-clad group engaging in physical contact with at least two other men on the sidewalk.

A dumpster had been dragged into the middle of the street, with its contents burning. When officers arrived, wearing helmets and carrying batons, the smoke could be seen billowing behind them as they tried to restore order.

Some of the street brawling occurred in the middle of traffic as drivers blared their horns and tried to avoid the chaos.

The LAPD confirmed officers were on the scene and had taken control of the situation but could not immediately provide figures on potential arrests or injuries.

Additional videos show rows of squad cars and police SUVs parked up and down the street, as well as helmeted officers declaring the protest an unlawful assembly and attempting to restore order after the opposing groups battled in the street with weapons including bats and bottles. One woman claimed to have been stabbed.

Bystanders tried to break up some of the fighting, videos show, but violence erupted on repeated occasions.

LAPD Officer Mike Lopez, a department spokesman, told Fox News Saturday that no arrests had been made but at least five crimes had been reported against five separate victims.

“Three of them were victims of assault and battery, and the other two were assault with deadly weapon,” he said.

Police were looking for numerous suspects.

The dueling demonstrations came in response to complaints about the spa’s transgender policy after a customer accused a transgender woman of exposing her genitals “right in front of young girls, teens and grown women” in a profanity-laced video of her complaint to a spa worker posted to Instagram.

It’s difficult to make out the clerk’s response behind a Plexiglas shield and coronavirus face mask but appears to mention the transgender customer is protected by California law.

Another customer can be heard demanding a refund and telling a different clerk she won’t be returning to the store.

Other customers attempted to intervene in the argument, and one bystander approached the woman taking the video.

“Are you talking about a transgender person?” he asks.

“There is no such thing as transgender,” she replies. “He has a d—.”

“You’re being a d—,” the man replies.

In a statement, Wi Spa noted California’s anti-discrimination law protects transgender individuals but said it had zero tolerance for “lewd conduct” by customers.

“As a spa located in Los Angeles, Wi Spa complies with California law prohibiting discrimination by a business, including the Civil Code provision set forth above,” the statement reads. “Like many other metropolitan areas, Los Angeles contains a transgender population, some of whom enjoy visiting a spa. Wi Spa strives to meet the needs and safety of all of its customers, and does not tolerate harassment or lewd conduct by any customer, regardless of their sex, gender, or other characteristic.”

The allegations of indecent exposure prompted condemnations from the LGBTQ community.

The Korean spa, which charges $25 to get inside, has been a hotspot for celebrities ranging from John Travolta and Johnny Depp to Demo Lovato.

Late-night host Conan O’Brien and actor Steven Yeun once filmed a skit in one of the spa’s hot tubs.

Modi’s Visit to Bangladesh Sets Off Violent Protests

DHAKA, Bangladesh — At least four people were killed and dozens injured in violent protests in Bangladesh on Friday, set off by the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India to mark 50 years since Bangladesh gained independence.

The deaths occurred in the southeastern district of Chattogram, where students from a prominent Islamic school and members of an Islamist group clashed with the police, officials said.

Alauddin Talukder, a police official, told reporters that five injured people had been taken to a Chattogram hospital and that four had died during treatment.

During Mr. Modi’s two-day visit, his first abroad since the coronavirus pandemic began, he will also commemorate the centennial of the birth of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Bangladeshi independence leader whose daughter, Sheikh Hasina, is now prime minister.

Ms. Hasina, who is seen by India as a key partner in maintaining regional stability, welcomed Mr. Modi at the airport on Friday morning.

Critics in India and elsewhere have accused Mr. Modi’s Hindu nationalist party of stoking religious polarization in India and discriminating against minorities, particularly Muslims. In recent weeks, demonstrators in Muslim-majority Bangladesh have urged Mr. Modi not to visit and criticized Ms. Hasina for inviting him.

Bangladeshi news outlets reported on Friday that members of an Islamist group had attacked government buildings, including a police station, in the Hathazari area of Chattogram before the clashes that led to the deaths.

Violence also broke out at the Baitul Mokarram mosque in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital, as rival groups of demonstrators clashed. Police officers used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, injuring scores of people, officials and witnesses said.

Protesters also set fire to offices at a railway station in the eastern district of Brahmanbaria, disrupting communications.

Outside the Baitul Mokarram mosque, hundreds of protesters had gathered by Friday afternoon. Witnesses said the clashes started after one faction of protesters began waving their shoes in a sign of contempt for Mr. Modi, and another group tried to stop them.

Local news outlets said the protesters who tried to stop the shoe-waving were aligned with Ms. Hasina’s governing Awami League party. TV broadcasts showed some protesters throwing stones at the police, who had been maintaining a heavy presence near the mosque. One channel reported that at least 40 people were injured in the clashes, including some journalists.

Abdul Mazid, a businessman, said he was trapped in the mosque after trying to flee when violence erupted during prayers. “I had a feeling that something was going to happen. I am still inside the mosque,” he said by telephone. “There is huge violence, I can see from here.”

After Mr. Modi’s arrival, Ms. Hasina told an audience in a parade square in Dhaka that Bangladesh’s relations with India had reached a new high. “If we move forward hand in hand, the development of our people is inevitable,” she said.

While Mr. Modi’s trip is mainly focused on Bangladesh’s anniversary celebrations, the visit also has political implications in India, where voting begins on Saturday in several state-level elections, including West Bengal, which borders Bangladesh.

With an eye toward galvanizing Hindu support in that battleground state, Mr. Modi is scheduled to visit a Hindu temple outside Dhaka that is sacred to the Matua community in West Bengal. The Matua sect’s vote could decide at least seven seats in a close race for control of the state assembly.

In a tweet late Thursday before his trip, Mr. Modi said the two countries shared a vital relationship.

“Our partnership with Bangladesh is an important pillar of our Neighborhood First policy, and we are committed to further deepen and diversify it. We will continue to support Bangladesh’s remarkable development journey, under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s dynamic leadership,” he said.

Armie Hammer accused of violent sexual assault: “I thought he was going to kill me”

Armie Hammer was accused on Thursday of violently sexually assaulting a woman for more than four hours in Los Angeles in 2017, leading her to believe that “he was going to kill me.” An attorney for Hammer has denied the allegations.

The allegations against the 34-year-old actor, known for his roles in “Call Me By Your Name,” and “The Social Network,” surfaced during a video press conference held by his accuser, identified only as “Effie,” and her attorney, Gloria Allred.

The woman, who cried throughout her statement, said she met Hammer on Facebook in 2016 when she was 20 years old, and “fell in love with him instantly. The relationship progressed rapidly and the emotions from both sides became really intense.” Hammer was married during the time of the alleged relationship, but he and his wife announced last year that they were filing for divorce.

Allred said Effie had an on and off “romantic and intimate relationship” with Hammer between 2016 to 2020. During that time, Effie said Hammer was “employing manipulation tactics in order to exert control over me, until I started to lose myself.”

“He would often test my devotion to him, slyly removing and crossing my boundaries, as he became increasingly more violent,” she added. “He abused me mentally, emotionally and sexually.”

On April 24, 2017, she claimed Hammer violently raped her for more than four hours in Los Angeles. She accused him of repeatedly slamming her head against the wall, and committing “other acts of violence” to which she did not consent — including allegedly beating her feet with a crop.

“During those four hours, I tried to get away but he wouldn’t let me,” she said. “I thought that he was going to kill me.”

The allegations come at a difficult time for Hammer, who stepped away from two major projects earlier this year after multiple women claimed on social media that the actor shared violent sexual fantasies with them. Hammer has denied the claims, which CBS News has not confirmed, calling them “bulls***” in a statement to E! Online.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to CBS News that it has launched a sexual assault investigation into Hammer over allegations of assault based on a report they received on February 3, 2021, but the department did not confirm the report had been filed by Effie. Allred said Effie has given information to police, but declined to comment on if Effie filed a police report at the time of the alleged assault.

An attorney for Hammer denied the claims, telling CBS News in a statement that “Mr. Hammer has maintained that all of his interactions with [Effie] — and every other sexual partner of his for that matter — have been completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory.”

The attorney also released a screenshot of what he said was a text conversation between Hammer and Effie, in which Hammer appeared to decline Effie’s graphic request for sex. The attorney told CBS News that Effie’s “own correspondence with Mr. Hammer undermines and refutes her outrageous allegations.” CBS News has not confirmed the authenticity of the messages.

In response to the attorney’s comment, Allred called on Hammer to “to present all, not some, of his communications with Effie to the Los Angeles Police Department and answer all of their questions directly rather than through his lawyers.”

“Even if a partner consents to some sexual acts, that does not mean that there is consent to any and all sexual conduct with her. It should also not be interpreted as consent to sexual abuse or criminal violence against her,” Allred said during the press conference.

Allred said Effie has provided evidence supporting her claims to law enforcement, adding “it is for law enforcement and the prosecutor to decide if there is sufficient evidence to pursue it.”

“We do think it is important that an investigation of these serious allegations is conducted,” Allred said. “We look forward to learning if Mr. Hammer, rather than his representatives, will be willing to assist investigators in their search for the truth.”

Southern Storms: Tennis ball-size hail forecast as powerful storms and violent tornadoes threaten South

The worst of the severe weather will likely stretch from parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley into Alabama, with several rounds of storms possible for parts of Mississippi and Alabama from Wednesday afternoon and into the night, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
The center is warning of “high risk” for severe weather — a category level that’s not taken lightly and used on average only once or twice per year. There were no “high risk” days in 2020. The last one was in May 2019.

About 11 million Americans in that region are at a higher risk for long-track tornadoes Wednesday, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham, Alabama, warned that “strong to violent tornadoes are expected.” Some areas are at a high risk of violent long-track tornadoes, damaging winds of over 80 mph as well as tennis ball-sized hail, the service said.

Long-track tornadoes are the ones that consistently remain on the ground for an extended period of time, unlike a typical one that could be on the ground for just minutes.

The Alabama Emergency Management Agency warned the storms could be a “dangerous and life-threatening event.”
In response to the forecast, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued a state of emergency, saying in a statement she did so “out of an abundance of caution.”

“Projections are showing that this will likely be a widespread event, with some of the most severe weather anticipated late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning,” Ivey said in a statement.

“Please make preparations now in the event your area is impacted in some way. I will continue keeping a close eye on the system and encourage every Alabamian to do the same,” the governor added.

Other officials also urged residents of the state to prepare Tuesday.

“Ensure you have multiple ways to receive warnings,” the weather service in Mobile wrote on Twitter. “Also have a plan on a safe place to go should a warning be issued. Please, do NOT focus on the exact risk level. Everybody in the region needs to be prepared for significant severe weather!”

CNN’s Dave Alsup, Jackson Dill and Jennifer Gray contributed to this report.

NHTSA investigating ‘violent’ Tesla crash, Autopilot not ruled out yet

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating a “violent” crash that involved a Tesla sedan and a tractor trailer late last week in Detroit. Investigators have not yet said whether Tesla’s Autopilot, FSD or FSD beta may have contributed to the crash.

The NHTSA said Monday in a statement, “NHTSA is aware of the violent crash that occurred on March 11 in Detroit involving a Tesla and a tractor trailer. We have launched a Special Crash Investigation team to investigate the crash.” Reuters previously reported the probe.

The Detroit police department said in an email that the crash happened when a Tesla piloted by “an unknown male driver” hit a semi-truck and “became wedged under the trailer.” A passenger in the car is in critical condition, and the circumstances of the accident still under investigation.

The NHTSA has previously embarked on probes into more than a dozen crashes that were thought to involve Tesla’s advanced driver assist systems.

These systems include Tesla’s standard Autopilot package, and a more advanced option marketed as Full Self-Driving, which is sold today for $10,000. The company’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (or FSD) technology do not make Tesla vehicles safe for operation without a driver at the wheel. Some customers who purchase the FSD option also get access to a “beta” version to try the newest features that are being added to the system before all bugs are worked out.

Investigators have not yet said whether any of these systems were in use during or just before the March 11 crash in Detroit. However, Tesla vehicles with Autopilot have collided with stationary objects and large vehicles, including tractor trailers and fire trucks, on multiple occasions.

A 50-year-old, Jeremy Beren Banner of Lake Worth, Florida, died when his Model 3 on Autopilot struck the side of a semi-trailer in Florida on March 1, 2019, resulting in the roof of his car being sheared off as it passed underneath.

Tesla’s Autopilot system, while it has changed significantly over the years, has been a subject of regulatory scrutiny since 2016 when an owner named Joshua Brown died driving his Tesla Model S with Autopilot engaged around Gainsville, Florida. The vehicle also collided with a tractor trailer.

Another federal vehicle safety watchdog that gives recommendations to NHTSA, the National Transportation Safety Board, recently called for clear and stringent rules for automated driving systems at a federal level. The board has pointed to Tesla’s approach to automated driving systems as a reason why stronger safety requirements and clear regulation are needed.

NASA Perseverance Rover will experience a violent seven-minute descent to Mars

One of the most challenging parts of putting any rover on the surface of Mars is the approximately seven-minute-long descent from orbit to the surface of the Red Planet. NASA is gearing up for the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover to land on Mars about 20 days from now. Currently, Perseverance has about 23.9 million miles left on its 292.5 million mile trip to Mars.

The spacecraft is closing on Mars at a rate of 1.6 miles per second. Once the spacecraft reaches the atmosphere of Mars, its seven-minute descent will begin. The spacecraft will experience extreme heat with temperatures equivalent to the surface of the sun.

It will decelerate rapidly using a parachute that will inflate while the spacecraft is traveling at supersonic speeds. Wrapping up the harrowing landing process will be the first ever autonomous guided landing on Mars. After the landing is successfully completed, Perseverance can prepare to begin studying the surface of Mars.

We mentioned earlier this morning that one of its significant experiments would be deploying the Ingenuity helicopter to see if air travel is possible on Mars. The main reason for Perseverance to cruise the surface of Mars is to search for signs of ancient life and collect samples that will one day be returned to earth for study.

Perseverance was constructed using collective knowledge gained from past missions to Mars. Its operations team hopes that it will expand the knowledge of Mars and solve mysteries about the possibility of ancient life on Mars. Jezero Crater is where Perseverance will be landing, a dry 28-mile basin home to a River Delta and ancient Lake filled with water in the distant past. Perseverance is scheduled to arrive at Mars on February 18.
