The Doctor Prescribed an Obesity Drug. Her Insurer Called It ‘Vanity.’

“Access to medicines for the treatment of obesity is dismal in this country,” said Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity medicine specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

But even if a patient’s insurer will cover weight loss drugs, most doctors do not suggest the drugs and most patients do not ask for them, as they fail to realize there are good treatment options, said Dr. Scott Kahan, an obesity medicine specialist in Washington, D.C. And, he added, even if doctors and patients know there are F.D.A. approved drugs, many think they are “unsafe or not well studied and that everyone regains their weight.”

The medical system bears much of the blame, Dr. Stanford said. Just 1 percent of doctors in the United States are trained in obesity medicine. “It’s the biggest chronic disease of our time, and no one is learning anything about it,” she said.

Data on medication use by patients predate the newer, more effective and safe drugs made by Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. Still, obesity medicine doctors say, they doubt that the number has changed much from the earlier studies that found that less than 1 percent who are eligible obtained one of these drugs. That is about the same percentage as those who get bariatric surgery, which most insurers, including Medicare, pay for.

“The perception is, ‘If you are heavy, pull yourself up from your bootstraps and try harder,’” Dr. Kahan said.

And that, he adds, is a perception many patients, as well as doctors, share, making them reluctant to seek medical help or prescription medications.

Kim Kardashian puts her iconic curves front and center in tight dress at the Vanity Fair Oscar party

Kim Kardashian put her iconic curves front and center as she mingled with Hollywood royalty at the 2022 Vanity Fair Oscar party.

The reality star, 41, was a vision in a skintight blue dress that hugged every inch of her body as she arrived to the exclusive bash, held at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills on Sunday.

Kim took the look to a whole new level with a pair of futuristic silver sunglasses while diamond teardrop earrings ramped up the glam factor.

Breathtaking in blue! Kim Kardashian put her iconic curves front and center as she mingled with Hollywood royalty at the 2022 Vanity Fair Oscar party

Kim’s extraordinarily fitted dress left little of her hourglass physique to the imagination, despite it completely covering her entire body.

The long-sleeved frock even came with gloved hands.

At the back of the dress, a hint of skin was visible thanks to two cut-outs showing Kim’s toned back.

While Kim made wearing the blue gown look effortless, she definitely needed some assistance as she prepared to walk the red carpet.

All eyes on her: Kim’s extraordinarily fitted dress left little of her hourglass physique to the imagination, despite it completely covering her entire body

Wowza: The dress cinched into Kim’s svelte torso and splayed out onto the floor in a dramatic train

A helpful man was seen placing Kim’s flowing train on the floor, ensuring it looked picture perfect for her moment in the spotlight.

In terms of her footwear, Kim opted for classic heels rather than an elaborate pair of shoes.

And leave it to Kim to have perfect hair and makeup.

Her hair was slicked back into a ponytail which cascaded down her back.

It comes with everything! The long-sleeved frock even came with gloved hands

The future is clear! Kim gazed through a pair of edgy silver shades that looked like they could have come from the future

Her brown eyes, which were occasionally shielded behind the shades, were amplified with lush lashes and an earthy hue of eye shadow.

She finished off her complexion with pink blush and lipstick.

Kim wasn’t the only member of the Kardashian-Jenner family in attendance with her sister Kourtney Kardashian and Kendall Jenner also partying at the exclusive bash.

Like Kim, Kendall opted to mingle inside the bash wearing a pair of sunglasses.

Family affair! Kim wasn’t the only member of the Kardashian-Jenner family in attendance with her sister Kourtney Kardashian and Kendall Jenner also partying at the exclusive bash

Double trouble! Like her big sister, Kendall also partied wearing a pair of sunglasses

On the red carpet, Kourtney was seen putting on a loved-up display her fiance Travis Barker. The couple made an outfit change for the party after attending the Oscars earlier that evening wearing black.

Inside the event, Kim mingled with big names such as Tyler Perry, Kathy Hilton, Emily Ratajkowski, and Hailey Bieber.

The Kardashians were just one of many A-listers celebrating Hollywood’s biggest night at the exclusive bash. Sienna Miller, Jessica Alba, Sofia Vergara and Rita Ora brought their fashion A-game for the soiree, which immediately followed the 94th Annual Academy Awards.

Good vibes! The beauty flashed a peace sign and puckered up her lips

Dangerous curves ahead! The bright dress clung to every inch of Kim’s famous curves

Throwing shade: The star exuded cool removing her sunglasses

The show saw Jessica Chastain finally winning her first Best Actress trophy and CODA making history as the first ever streaming film to earn Best Picture.

But Will Smith’s physical altercation with Chris Rock was no doubt the most talked-about moment of the show.

Smith ended up winning Best Actor, and in his acceptance speech tearfully apologized following the ugly row with Rock over a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

The 53-year-old actor earned the honor for his work as father of Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard just minutes after the awkward altercation in which he appeared to strike the 57-year-old comedian with an open hand.

Date night! Kourtney attended the exclusive party with her fiance Travis Barker

Getting handsy! Barker placed his hand on Kourtney’s read end as they put on a loved-up display for cameras

Hollywood elite! Kim and Kendall mingled with Tyler Perry inside the bash

He beat out Javier Bardem – Being the Ricardos, Benedict Cumberbatch – The Power of the Dog, Andrew Garfield – tick, tick… BOOM!, and Denzel Washington – The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Accepting the award, Smith issued an apology for his emotional outburst, saying: ‘I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment.’

The slapping incident occurred after Rock cracked jokes about the haircut of Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. The shocking scene, broadcast live around the world, appeared genuine and stunned both the live audience at the Dolby Theatre and TV viewers.

After Smith strode out on stage and appeared to strike Rock with an open right hand, Rock staggered and exclaimed ‘wow, Will Smith just smacked the s**t out of me.’

Celebrity who’s who! The sisters also ran into Emily Ratajkowski and Hailey Bieber

Friends in high places! Kim also enjoyed a chat with Kathy Hilton

Fashion statement! Kendall also got heads turning with her over-the-top black dress

Leading ladies! The reality stars also mingled with Serena Williams, who was looking all glam in a sparkling mini dress

Smith, visibly emotional, walked back to his seat in the audience and shouted: ‘Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.’

The exchange was muted on a delayed telecast in much of the US, but was aired in full to some international audiences.

Smith, who is nominated in the best actor category, appeared to take offence to a gag Rock made about Pinkett Smith’s short haircut.

Referring to Pinkett Smith’s buzzcut, Rock said: ‘Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2’, prompting the actress to roll her eyes. Pinkett Smith has been grappling with hair loss since revealing her alopecia diagnosis in 2018.

After being slapped, Rock appeared shocked and flustered as he tried to resume presenting the best documentary feature category.

He remarked: ‘That was the greatest night in the history of television.’

Having a blast! Kendall grinned from ear-to-ear whilst chatting with the tennis icon

Undivided attention: The reality star gave Perry 100% of her focus

Mindy Kaling showcased her svelte figure at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

The Office alum, 42, wowed in a glittering, off-the-shoulder dress with a magnificent yellow skirt and thigh-high slit as she posed up a storm at the Beverly Hills bash, held at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.

She was joined by B.J. Novak, her friend, former co-star and ex-boyfriend.

Turning heads! Mindy Kaling wowed in a glittering, off-the-shoulder dress with a magnificent yellow skirt and thigh-high slit as she posed up a storm at the Vanity Fair Oscar party on Sunday

Mindy looked exquisite in a fitted glittering top which cinched into her trim waist and hugged her cleavage.

An elegant cape was attached to the top and fell dramatically to the floor.

She also rocked a pair of platform silver heels.

The Mindy Project star worked a head full of straight tresses with a slight wave, a dash of gold eye shadow beside her inner eye, and stunning teardrop earrings.

Plus one! Kaling was joined at the exclusive party by her friend and ex B.J. Novak

Red carpet beauty! Mindy looked exquisite in a fitted glittering top which cinched into her trim waist and hugged her cleavage

She also turned heads with a massive glittering ring.

B.J. was looking smart in a black jacket, matching slacks, and a white button down shirt.

Mindy posted a photo series of her glammed up look to her Instagram account on Sunday, which she gave the silly caption, ‘I love the movies!’

The actress has been showing off her trimmer figure on Instagram as of late but has yet to comment on the recent weight loss.

Looking good! B.J. sported a black jacket, slacks, and button down shirt

In August she talked about her weight.

Kaling revealed that her body confidence journey had a major bump in the road after a fellow writer suggested she write jokes about her weight into her work.

In an interview with GMA, the writer and actress opened up about the time a coworker in a different writers’ room said one of her characters should joke about her needing to lose 15 pounds.

Beauty! Kaling has been showing off her weight loss on Instagram as of late

Stepping out in style! She worked a cool pair of silver platform heels

But instead of finding it funny, she said the joke was ‘devastating’ and honed in on her ‘greatest insecurity.’

‘This is my greatest insecurity and someone just called it out. It’s really devastating,’ she recalled thinking.

Mindy has seen her career take off as she not only acts in projects, but she also develops them, making her a force in Hollywood.

Glammed up! Kaling’s hair was styled straight with a slight wave and she adorned her complexion with a dose of gold eye shadow and lush lashes

The beauty has been busy with producing her hit teen show Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives Of College Girls.

And she takes care of her three-year-old daughter, Katherine ‘Kit’ Swati, and her one-year-old son, Spencer Avu.

Mindy welcomed Kit on December 15, 2017. Kit’s middle name is a tribute to Kaling’s late mother, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2012.

She previously shed light on her decision not to reveal her daughter’s father, telling the New York Times Magazine: ‘My feeling is that until I speak to my daughter about that, I’m not going to talk to anyone else about it.’

And Spencer was welcomed in mid 2020.

‘I love the movies!’ Kaling shared her red carpet look to her Instagram account

Hello sunshine! The dress boasted a canary yellow cape which dripped dramatically to the floor

Removing the %&*@ from Maine’s vanity plates will take time

Removing the flipping obscenities from license plates on Maine’s roads and highways isn’t going to happen overnight, even though a law banning such profanities in a state where such regulation has been unusually lax goes into effect Monday.

Currently, there are license plates with salty language including f-bombs, references to anatomy and sex acts, and general insults. One license plate says simply, “F—-Y0U” — except that on the plate, it’s plainly spelled out.

Now, rule-making is getting underway to ensure the law protects First Amendment rights while getting rid of obscene language.

The process, which includes public comment, could take between two to four months, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said.

Requests for so-called vanity license plates that are deemed to be potentially offensive will be on hold in the meantime. Eventually, the state will begin recalling previously issued plates, likely this winter.

“Rule-making will delay the process of active removal of plates from the road but will help us balance the free speech rights of citizens and the public interest of removing inappropriate license plates,” she said.

A majority of states have restrictions on license plate messages that are considered profane, sexually suggestive, racist, drug related, politically objectionable or religiously offensive.

But Maine became the “wild, wild, wild west of vanity license plates” when the state dropped its review process in 2015. “Our anything-goes approach was unusual,” Bellows said.

As a former executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine, Bellows understands the importance of the First Amendment protections on free speech. But she acknowledged she didn’t understand the extent of “really disturbing” license plates before she was sworn in as secretary of state earlier this year.

There have been lawsuits over the issue in other states.

Last year, a federal judge ruled that California couldn’t enforce a ban on vanity license plates it considers “offensive to good taste and decency.”

The California law was overly broad, so states must be careful to target license plates that are profane or obscene, or represent hate speech.

In Maine, there are about 121,000 vanity license plates on the roads in a state with about 1.3 million residents. An estimated 400 offensive plates could be subject to recall, officials said.

Bellows said she’s looking at it this way: “If you can’t say it on the 6 o’clock news, it shouldn’t be on a license plate.”

“The license plate is the property of the state,” she said. “If you really want an offensive slogan on your car, then you can use a bumper sticker.”

Vanity Fair critic accuses Netflix of ‘gaslighting us’ on Dave Chappelle’s ‘transphobic’ special

Vanity Fair TV critic Sonia Saraiya is accusing Netflix of “gaslighting” the public amid the uproar over Dave Chappelle’s new stand-up special.

The streaming giant has stood by Chappelle’s “The Closer,” which critics including Saraiya have decried as “transphobic” over remarks he made supporting J.K. Rowling in that gender is based in fact, declaring himself on “team TERF,” which stands for trans-exclusionary radical feminist.

Saraiya insisted Netflix “has spent the last week alienating” its queer audiences.

“Of course, Chappelle is a comedian who relies on tweaking our most sensitive buttons, and has targeted trans people in his humor in the past. But this special muddles through polemic and memory, incorporating Chappelle’s trans friend Daphne Dorman’s suicide into a special that also asserts, not very humorously, that ‘gender is a fact,’” Saraiya wrote Friday.

Saraiya then quoted Netflix employees who’ve been outspoken with their condemnation of the Chappelle special and cited the internal Netflix drama that included the suspension of a trans employee who attempted to storm into a high-level meeting and the firing of another trans employee who leaked financial documents regarding Chappelle’s specials to Bloomberg News.

NBC NEWS SLAMMED FOR DAVE CHAPPELLE HIT PIECE RELYING ON 3 RANDOM TWITTER USERS OUTRAGED OVER TRANS REMARKS

“[Netflix CEO Ted] Sarandos’s memo chose to recenter the conversation on whether or not ‘The Closer’ caused harm, and then to strongly argue that it does not. This led the executive toward some bold language: ‘While some employees disagree, we have a strong belief that content on screen doesn’t directly translate to real-world harm… The strongest evidence to support this is that violence on screens has grown hugely over the last thirty years, especially with first party shooter games, and yet violent crime has fallen significantly in many countries. Adults can watch violence, assault, and abuse—or enjoy shocking stand-up comedy—without it causing them to harm others,’” Saraiya quoted the Netflix boss.

“There are so many red flags in this statement that I don’t quite know where to start. Certainly you have to admire its casual conviction; after all, what exactly would make Ted Sarandos an expert on how what we see onscreen affects who we are in life? The statement turns watching Chappelle into a question of taste, a personal choice that has no political ramifications,” Saraiya reacted to Sarandos. “It’s so slippery and difficult to pin down what makes someone violent that Sarandos’s statement is hard to immediately disprove—and trying to disprove it puts you in the deep weeds of trying to suss out the motivations of hate.”

After citing statistics of a surge in anti-trans violence, Saraiya wrote, “It is not rocket science to suggest that a huge comedian spouting bigotry on a major media platform might make it a little more likely that an already at-risk group of people will suffer more violence. Chappelle offers absolution for prejudice; he’s making anti-trans prejudice acceptable, digestible, indeed, even funny. Netflix knows just how powerful Chappelle’s anti-trans rhetoric is—because his specials have devoted, vocal fans. Ironically, Sarandos is picking and choosing his real-world effects; he’s singling out the adoration of Chappelle’s fans while dismissing the effect of anti-trans rhetoric.”

The Vanity Fair critic acknowledged Sarandos’ support for Chappelle “is at least partly about money” since Netflix made a multi-million-dollar investment into the comedian and that “Studio heads have long made devil’s bargains for their talent.”

“Sarandos, and Netflix’s leadership as a whole, seems to think the efforts to make Chappelle fit on the platform are worth squandering the years of goodwill and investment made in making Netflix a space where queer audiences are seen as just as important and valuable as straight viewers. They certainly seem particularly confident that while they are collecting their ‘impact value’ off of Chappelle’s specials that his rhetoric is doing no harm. I will be curious to see what costs, if any, they bear for breaking their long-standing relationship with the LGBTQ+ community,” Saraiya added.
