USC vs. Tulane score: Live updates, college football scores, Cotton Bowl 2023 coverage, highlights

The Cotton Bowl finish is setting up to be yet another classic here in this later portion of the 2022-23 college football bowl game schedule with USC holding a 35-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter. USC quarterback Caleb Williams already has 400 passing yards and four touchdowns in his first game since winning the Heisman Trophy, and though the Trojans are down star wide receiver Jordan Addison, the receiver room has gotten a huge boost from Brenden Rice, who has 174 yards and two touchdowns on six catches through three quarters.

While USC, boasting more than 500 yards of offense already, has scored touchdowns on five of its seven possessions, there have been answers at nearly every turn from Tulane. The Green Wave have two touchdowns and a field goal on their three third quarter possessions, and running back Tyjae Spears is challenging Williams and Rice for the moniker of most impactful player in the game. Spears has 152 yards and three touchdowns, marking the eighth straight game he has run for at least 100 yards.

In USC’s case, the stakes for the final quarter include winning a bowl game for the first time since the end of the 2016 season and getting a jump start on the 2023 campaign with another stellar performance from Williams. Tulane is already in its biggest bowl game since before World War II, so to win would cap what has already been a dream turnaround from 2-10 in 2021 to 11-2 in 2022.

CBS Sports will keep you updated throughout the Cotton Bowl with analysis and highlights as USC battles Tulane.

USC vs. Utah score, takeaways: Utes dominate Trojans to defend Pac-12 title, claim Rose Bowl berth

No. 11 Utah played the role of spoiler Friday night in a dominant 47-24 win over No. 4 USC in the 2022 Pac-12 Championship Game. The evisceration of the Trojans, which saw the Utes take advantage of multiple injuries to USC quarterback Caleb Williams, not only sends Utah into the Rose Bowl for the second straight season but also likely knocks USC out of the College Football Playoff.

While that will not be determined for sure until Sunday, the two-loss Trojans are highly unlikely to see the four-team field with two losses to the Utes this season. Expected to replace USC is No. 5 Ohio State, which has only suffered a loss to No. 2 Michigan.

USC jumped out to a 17-3 first-half lead behind some incredible plays from Williams. However, the Heisman Trophy favorite was slowed under the weight of two injuries, including a hamstring injury that opened a door for Utah to rally from a 14-point deficit before halftime and outscore USC 30-7 in the second half.

When the Utes knocked off the Trojans 43-42 on Oct. 15, tight end Dalton Kincaid was one of Utah’s heroes. With Kincaid slowed Friday night by a lower-back injury, however, a variety of characters emerged as threats in the passing game for quarterback Cam Rising. After scoring five touchdowns against the Trojans in the first meeting, Rising turned in another huge performance on Saturday, which included touchdown passes of 57 yards to Money Parks and 60 yards to Thomas Yassmin in the second half. Neither player was among the Utes’ top targets in the regular season, but both came up with huge plays amid a reduced role for Kincaid. With 5:29 remaining, Ja’Quinden Jackson sealed the outcome with a 53-yard touchdown run.

Otherwise, the story was Williams. The sophomore star threw two touchdowns and had an incredible 59-yard run in the first quarter alone. He looked essentially unstoppable. However, an injury to the pinky on his throwing hand and the hamstring injury limited his mobility and accuracy for the remainder of the game. As he slowed down, so did the Trojans.

Williams ‘not even 50 percent’

When Williams scrambled for a 59-yard gain in the first quarter to set up a touchdown that put USC ahead 14-3, he looked like the dynamic playmaker who’d wowed the country for much of the season. For most of the rest of the game, though, he looked like a different player. As it turned out, that dazzling run resulted in a hamstring injury, according to coach Lincoln Riley.

One of the first obvious signs that something may have changed for Williams came late in the second quarter when he was sacked on a second-and-1 Normally elusive, Williams was unable to escape the grasp of Utah defensive end Gabe Reid. A similar scene played out numerous times during the rest of the game. Utah finished with seven sacks on Williams, who walked and jogged with a noticeable limp at times.

“He was not even 50 percent,” said Riley after the game. “I thought about taking him out but he wouldn’t let me … maybe the gutsiest performance I’ve ever seen.”

Though he should remain a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy, the rough night for Williams may add some drama to the vote. Other potential candidates such as Michigan running back Blake Corum and Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker also dealt with late-season injuries that took momentum from their campaigns for the award. If nothing else, the game showed how important Williams is to USC. Once he was less than 100%, the holes in the Trojans’ pass protection became more evident, as did their inability to run the football.

Utah repeats

A 29-26 Week 1 loss at Florida changed the outside perception around the Utes. Though it entered the season regarded as a potential CFP team, Utah faced an uphill climb after just one game. When star tight end Brant Kuithe was lost early in the season due to injury, coupled with the Utes falling to 4-2 with a loss at UCLA on Oct. 8, it seemed as though a disappointing year was on the horizon. However, as it has become the norm for the program under 18th-year Kyle Whittingham, Utah persevered.

While the UCLA defeat essentially eliminated Utah from CFP contention, the Utes beat USC for the first time the following week and stayed locked in on returning to the Pac-12 title game. The program has been to the league championship game in four of the past five seasons and now has back-to-back titles. After suffering a second Pac-12 loss to Oregon in November, It actually took a convoluted tiebreaker for Utah to get into the Pac-12 Championship Game over Washington and the Ducks. No matter how they ended up in the game, the Utes left carrying the trophy.

USC’s defense falls short

While the injuries to Williams will rightfully gain a lot of attention from Friday’s result, the lackluster play of USC’s defense was arguably more significant in determining the outcome. Utah converted 5 of 11 third downs and busted three plays of 50 yards or more. One prominent example of USC’s poor tackling came with Utah facing a third-and-19 from its own 43-yard line early in the third quarter. The game was tied at 17 and it appeared the Trojans were about to force a three-and-out when Rising hit Parks for a go-ahead touchdown.

Numerous defenders had a chance to tackle Parks, but he accelerated through the defense and gave Utah its first lead. The Utes finished with 533 yards and were effective on the ground and through the air. The Trojans have feasted on turnovers all year (they finish +21 in turnover margin) but they’re going to be a national title contender in Year 2 under Riley, they will need to make significant defensive improvement.

CFP hope for Ohio State

In the moment, Ohio State’s 45-23 loss to Michigan last week seemed like a fatal blow to the Buckeyes’ CFP aspirations as it knocked them out of the Big Ten Championship Game and out of the top four in the CFP Rankings. As it turns out, Ohio State may still have a chance to compete for a national championship. Unless the CFP Selection Committee decides to admit a two-loss team for the first time in its nine-year history, Ohio State will be an obvious choice to include in the field. At 11-1, the Buckeyes could reach the playoff for the second time as a non-division champion. They also made it with an 11-1 record in 2016 when Penn State won the Big Ten East, though they lost 31-0 to Clemson in a semifinal.

No. 21 Oregon State edges No. 9 Oregon, clearing way for USC vs. Utah rematch in Pac-12 Championship Game

USATSI

No. 9 Oregon squandered a trip to the Pac-12 Championship Game after losing 38-34 to rival No. 21 Oregon State as the Beavers pulled off a miraculous comeback. No. 14 Utah, with its 63-21 win over Colorado coupled with No. 13 Washington’s Apple Cup victory, jumped past the Ducks thanks to conference tiebreaker rules and will play No. 6 USC in Las Vegas. The title game will serve as a rematch of a 43-42 victory for the Utes on Oct. 15.

The Ducks could have clinched a title game berth with a win over their rival, but Washington’s win over Washington State bumped the Huskies into a three-way tie with the Ducks and Utes. The tiebreaker rules gave Utah the three-way advantage due to a better strength of schedule. The Ducks will have a long offseason to think about their loss after giving up a massive lead.

Oregon State trailed 31-10 in the third quarter but finished the game on a 28-3 run down the stretch to beat its rival for just the third time since 2008. The Beavers’ passing game struggled, but a dominant running performance helped make up the gap. Running back Damien Martinez, one of the best freshmen players in America, toted the ball 15 times for 103 yards to lead a Beavers rushing effort that posted 268 yards and five touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Ben Gulbranson completed just six passes and threw two interceptions in the win.

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix had another strong game with 327 yards passing and two touchdowns, but the Ducks failed to convert in key situations. The Ducks settled for a field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter at the Oregon State 6-yard line and muffed a punt at the 2-yard line to set up another Beavers score. Nix made a wrong decision on a fourth-and-1 zone read and was stopped for a turnover on downs.

Nix had one last chance to throw a game-winner into the end zone, but his pass on fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line fell harmlessly into the end zone. Oregon State was able to get a first down and run out the clock.

The win clinches a 9-3 season for Oregon State, which is the best since former coach Mike Riley led the Beavers to a 9-4 campaign in 2012. If Oregon State can win a bowl game, the Beavers could put together a 10-win campaign for the first time since 2006.

The Pac-12 Championship Game features No. 6 USC facing off against No. 14 Utah in Las Vegas at 8 p.m. ET on Friday. With a win, the Trojans can likely earn their first trip to the College Football Playoff. The Utes will try to win their second consecutive conference championship after entering the season as betting favorites.

Utah to play USC in Pac-12 championship game after improbable weekend

Estimated read time: 3-4 minutes

BOULDER, Colo. — It was an improbable path, but one that was possible, too.

Coming into the final weekend of the regular season, Utah was on the outside looking in for a potential Pac-12 championship game appearance. There was still a narrow chance the Utes could defend their 2021 title, but everything had to go as planned over the weekend.

Utah needed four games, to be exact, to go their way. If they did, they’d be in the program’s fourth title game appearance in five seasons:

  • UCLA needed to beat California
  • Oregon State needed to beat Oregon
  • Utah needed to beat Colorado
  • Washington needed to beat Washington State

As the final score flashed on the video board at Folsom Field, Utah fans erupted in cheers.

It wasn’t Utah’s 63-21 win over Colorado to closeout the regular season — one of the four necessary steps — but a 38-34 result in favor of Oregon State over rival Oregon in the game formerly known as “The Civil War.” That was the game that seemed the most likely to cause problems for Utah, and the Beavers took care of it.

Suddenly, the path for Utah came down to one game (UCLA beat Cal on Friday night to unlock the first step) and a late-night Apple Cup rivalry game would determine the team’s fate.

It was a game for the ages where the winner of the game determined which outside team got into the championship game to face a USC team on the verge of a potential College Football Playoff bid. If Washington won, Utah was in the championship; if Washington State, Oregon was in.

After a wild back-and-forth, high-scoring, it was Washington that came out on top with a 51-33 win over their rival.

Utah was in.

For Utah, it was the equivalent of hitting a parlay — making two or more bets as one to increase the amount of money won, but it comes with a higher risk — in sports gambling, and Utah collected big.

Easy, right? Not exactly. If looking at standard betting odds in a four-team parlay, the chance to win were about 7.5% … or a 15.3% chance according to ESPN for Utah specifically.

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said he was made aware of the Oregon-Oregon State game at different points throughout the end of their game against Colorado, but it wasn’t a constant check — he was coaching a blowout game, after all.

“Not until the very end,” he said. “I mean, I saw the score flash up like everyone else did periodically, but not until deep into the fourth quarter was I getting some feedback from my guy on the sidelines.”

It was on everyone’s mind, though, and was hard to put away.

“Yeah, we were looking,” Utah quarterback Cam Rising said of the occasional glances to Colorado’s video board when the scores showed.

Whittingham said after the game that they’d be “rooting hard for the Huskies and see where it takes us.”

The Huskies took the Utes back to Las Vegas for another meeting against USC.

Utah is the only team to beat USC this season and the Trojans will be looking to avenge a 43-42 loss in Rice-Eccles Stadium on a gutsy 2-point conversion by Cam Rising.

USC vs. Notre Dame score: Live game updates, college football scores, NCAA top 25 highlights today

No. 6 USC is one quarter away from finishing its first regular season under coach Lincoln Riley with an 11-1 record as the Trojans take a 24-14 edge on No. 15 Notre Dame into the fourth quarter. With quarterback Caleb Williams showing why he’s become a Heisman Trophy favorite and the Trojans’ defense coming up with timely plays, USC has looked like a College Football Playoff-caliber squad during much of the rivalry showdown.

But Notre Dame is proving to be a resilient foe, both tonight and on the season as a whole. After a rough start to his first season, Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman has his squad playing solid football. If not for an untimely fumble from quarterback Drew Pyne in the third quarter and a failed fourth-down conversion attempt in the first half, this game would look much different. As it stands, the Trojans are closing in on a victory that would keep their CFP hopes alive entering next week’s Pac-12 Championship Game.

CBS Sports will be here throughout the night with live updates, highlights and analysis as the Trojans and Irish battle each other in what should be a tremendous game to wrap up Rivalry Week.

Tennessee falls to South Carolina, USC keeps CFP hopes alive

No. 5 Tennessee was blown out 63-38 by South Carolina in the biggest upset of the day. The Vols defense was helpless against the Gamecocks’ prolific passing game.

That loss could potentially be great news for No. 7 USC, which held off UCLA 48-45 in a wild affair. That puts the Trojans at 10-1 with a spot in the Pac-12 title game secured. The Trojans’ playoff hopes are very much alive.

Meanwhile, it was a scary day for another group of playoff hopefuls as No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 TCU all had to survive some close calls on Saturday.

Ohio State held off a furious late rally from Maryland to win 43-30, Michigan beat Illinois 19-17 on a field goal with 9 seconds to play, and TCU prevailed 29-28 over Baylor on their own last-second field goal.

Even No. 1 Georgia had a less-than-convincing 16-6 victory over Kentucky. In the end, everyone got the job done to get up a high-stakes final weekend of the regular season.

Tomorrow’s Top 25 Today: USC, Clemson playoff profiles improve amid jumps in college football rankings

The razor-thin margin for error in college football was on display throughout the scores and results from Week 12. It was a week where the scoreboard showed a couple upsets for top 25 teams, but we were also a few bounces away from total chaos in the college football rankings.

No. 1 Georgia was backed up into the red zone by Kentucky, holding a 10-point lead with 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter before forcing a missed field goal and a turnover on downs to remain undefeated. No. 2 Ohio State, also on the road against an unranked opponent, led by just three points late in a battle with Maryland. Meanwhile, No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 TCU both won thanks to last-second field goals. If a few plays (or even just a couple kicks) had different results, the AP Top 25 voters would be faced with a difficult challenge sorting out the carnage in their updated ballots.

That’s not to say the voters job will be easy in the wake of Saturday’s results.

The debates about body of work against recent results will be on full display with the slotting of Tennessee after a stunning 63-38 loss at South Carolina. The Volunteers are now 9-2 and carry wins against both Alabama and LSU, yet Saturday night’s defeat as a 22-point favorite could have Tennessee falling behind one or both of those SEC foes. A similar conservation will be had further down in the rankings after Ole Miss lost for a second straight week, this time at unranked Arkansas. The Rebels are 8-3 and fell just one score short of toppling last week, when looking for quality wins voters must determine how valuable close wins against Kentucky and at Texas A&M are compared to other three-loss teams.

By the end of the night, five teams from the top 16 in the AP Top 25 will have taken losses, providing plenty of opportunities for other teams to move up. Benefitting most from the limited chaos were USC and Clemson, which each took care of business (in quite different fashions) to remain atop their respective conferences entering Week 13. If both can win out, the College Football Playoff Selection Committee may have some extremely tough decisions to make on Selection Sunday.

Here’s how we think the new AP Top 25 will look on Sunday:

1. Georgia (Last week — 1): An absence of an obvious challenger for the No. 1 spot keeps the status quo as the Bulldogs remain at No. 1 following a 16-6 win at Kentucky.

2. Ohio State (2): The Buckeyes could catch a few more first-place votes after pouring on the points late in a 43-30 win at Maryland, but voters tracking scores through the day will note that this was a three-point game deep into the fourth quarter. Freshman running back Dallan Hayden had a breakout performance with 146 yards and three touchdowns, all of them after halftime as Ohio State overcame an early deficit and took control of the game in the third quarter.

3. Michigan (3): There is a lot to be concerned about for Michigan coming out of Saturday’s win against Illinois — from Blake Corum’s health to how often scoring opportunities seem to end in field goal attempts — but merely holding on for a win will be enough to remain in the top five of the rankings.

4. TCU (4): The dream season continues for TCU thanks to quarterback Max Duggan leading a couple of fourth-quarter scoring drives, opening the door for a potential jump into the top three of the rankings. Our projection is that the AP voters will keep last week’s order in place, but the playoff committee has fewer voters can thus can be more volatile. TCU could end up No. 4 on Sunday but No. 3 on Tuesday night thanks to the game-winning field goal at Baylor.

5. USC (7): The Trojans rallied from down 14-0 after the first quarter, outscoring the Bruins by 17 over the final 45 minutes for a 48-45 victory to remain the lone one-loss team in the Pac-12. With Tennessee falling and USC impressing down the stretch as it clinched a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game, the Trojans should jump two-loss LSU into the fifth spot.

6. LSU (6): The Tigers enjoyed the Senior Day festivities with a 41-10 dismantling of UAB. Up next is a trip to College Station to face Texas A&M, then the SEC Championship Game against Georgia.

7. Clemson (9): With a 40-10 win against Miami, the Tigers have now won 40 consecutive home games. Thanks to some of Saturday’s results elsewhere, things are looking up for Clemson’s CFP chances. This marks only the ninth 40-game home winning streak in FBS history, the first since Nebraska won 47 straight home games from 1991-98.

8. Tennessee (5): The injury to star QB Hendon Hooker has added layers of disappointment for a program that saw its playoff hopes dashed with the lopsided loss to a division foe.

9. Alabama (8): No major adjustments for a 34-0 win against FCS Austin Peay.

10. Oregon (12): In defeating Utah, the Ducks seem certain to jump into the top 10, but what’s the ceiling? Look for Oregon to be as high as No. 8, but our official projection is Dan Lanning’s crew will take the Utes’ spot at No. 10.

11. Penn State (11): While chaos ensues all around Penn State’s position in the poll, the Nittany Lions were one of the few ranked teams to absolutely deliver on expectations of dominance with a 55-10 win at Rutgers.

12. Washington (15): The Huskies will move up thanks to shake ups within the top 16 and a dominant 54-7 win against Colorado.

13. Notre Dame (18): Since joining into a scheduling agreement in 2014, Notre Dame is now 40-7 in regular season games against the ACC after a 44-0 win against Boston College. The Fighting Irish, now 8-3 on the year, closed out their home slate with their 28th straight regular season win against an ACC opponent. They face USC on the road in next week’s regular-season finale.

14. Kansas State (19): Winners of three in their last four, the Wildcats are closing in on a Big 12 Championship Game spot after putting 41 points on the board in the first half and defending an early lead en route to a 17-point win at West Virginia. A win against rival Kansas next week secures Kansas State’s shot at a rematch with TCU in Dallas for the conference title.

15. UCLA (16): The Bruins gave up a 14-point lead in the first quarter and four-point advantage in the third as they fell to the Trojans in a key spot. With consecutive losses and now three in the last five weeks, the goodwill UCLA received early in the season can now be overlooked given its rough closing stretch.

16. Utah (10): The bill has come due from a rankings perspective for Utah, a team with three losses on the year but a win against the Pac-12’s lone one-loss team. Beating USC has provided some rankings strength that was overriding losses to Florida and UCLA, but now that Utah enters the debate of three-loss teams following a loss to Oregon, the head-to-head edge for the Bruins could determine how these teams stack up in the rankings.

17. Florida State (20): The Seminoles scored touchdowns on five of six first-half possession and never allowed a visit from Louisiana to become competitive, cruising to a 49-17 win.

18. Tulane (21): A Thursday night AAC showdown with SMU was expected to be a tough test for the Green Wave in the wake of last week’s close loss to UCF, but the Mustangs turned the ball over five times and Tulane seized the spotlight opportunity with a 59-24 win that should impress the voters.

19. Cincinnati (22): Now 9-2 after a 20-point win at Temple, Cincinnati can play its way into a fourth straight AAC title game appearance if it beats Tulane on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

20. Coastal Carolina (23): Saturday’s game against Virginia was canceled as the school and community took Saturday to honor the three UVA players killed in last weekend’s tragic on-campus shooting.

21. North Carolina (13): The best thing North Carolina has going for it in terms of the rankings is only having two losses after falling 21-17 at home to Georgia Tech. Falling from No. 13 all the way out of the rankings is too drastic of an adjustment for this point in the season, but the tumble will be dramatic considering both the disappointing result (losing as a 21-point favorite) and the profile’s lack of high-end wins.

22. Ole Miss (14): The last four results for Ole Miss give little insight into where the Rebels stack up against the best teams in the country. There are three losses — by 25 to LSU, by six to Alabama and by 15 to unranked Arkansas — and a lone win by three at Texas A&M. Ole Miss is a few plays away from 9-2 with a top-10 win but also a few plays away from being 7-4 and out of the top 25. As it stands, we’ve got Lane Kiffin’s team hanging on just inside the rankings after Saturday night’s loss in Fayetteville.

23. Oregon State (25): The Beavers have now won eight games for the first time since 2012 after a convincing 31-7 road victory over Arizona State. They will have a chance to solidify their chances of the finishing the season ranked next week against Oregon.

24. Texas (NR): We’re projecting the Longhorns to break back into the rankings. Texas was not only one of the top vote-getters in last week’s balloting outside the top 25, but there will be some “sticker shock” for voters who might have expected Saturday’s game at Kansas to be a potential upset spot and instead saw a dominant 55-14 Longhorns win.

25. UCF (17): There is going to be a drop for UCF on every ballot after the 17-14 home loss to Navy, but the Knights will likely receive enough votes to stay inside the top 25. Now 8-3, UCF does have wins against Tulane and Cincinnati but losses to Louisville, ECU and Navy. The Midshipmen were 3-7 heading into the game, handing the Knights their worst loss of the season. Still, UCF is a team with only three losses and two wins against other teams in the top 25.

Projected to drop out: Oklahoma State (24)

College football Week 12: USC defeats UCLA; Oregon leading Utah

Week 12 of the college football season has featured several exciting matchups, and there’s still more where that came from as things wind down Saturday evening.

Currently, No. 10 Utah is attempting to beat No. 12 Oregon for the third time in the last two seasons in a rematch of last year’s Pac-12 Championship Game.

Earlier, Oklahoma got revenge against No. 22 Oklahoma State in the Bedlam Series after losing to its arch-rival last season, and No. 7 USC outlasted crosstown rival No. 16 UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

Elsewhere, No. 4 TCU kicked a game-winning field goal against Baylor as time expired to stay unbeaten. In the Big Ten, No. 3 Michigan also rallied to beat Illinois in the final seconds and No. 2 Ohio State narrowly came away with a win over Maryland. No. 9 Clemson throttled Miami and Texas dismantled Kansas on the road.

Here are the top plays from Saturday’s slate!

No. 10 Utah at No. 12 Oregon

Ducks go up

Oregon was first on the board when Mar’Keise Irving capped off a 10-play, 79-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run to open the game.

Then, QB Bo Nix connected with Biletnikoff Award hopeful Troy Franklin to extend the Ducks’ lead.

Stay tuned for updates!

No. 7 USC 48, No. 16 UCLA 45

Bruins strike first

UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson took it in for the Bruins himself, giving the home team the early lead.

Then, he showed off his arm strength for UCLA’s second first-quarter touchdown, a 30-yard bomb.

Closing the gap

USC gained some momentum in the second quarter, pulling within three points to keep the Bruins close.

Riding the wave

USC QB Caleb Williams found a rhythm ahead of the break with one big throw after another. That helped set up another Trojans touchdown to keep the Bruins within arm’s reach as halftime approached.

New leader

USC took its first lead of the game in the third quarter when Williams found Jordan Addison for a 35-yard TD.

All-out effort

There were six more touchdowns exchanged between both teams, as this one came down to the wire. In the end, the Trojans sealed the deal with a late-minute interception as UCLA charged downfield.

Oklahoma 28, No. 22 Oklahoma State 13

In the dust

Drake Stoops burned the man covering him and made a diving grab at the 1-yard line to set up Oklahoma for the game’s first score.

Man of the hour

Sooners QB Dillon Gabriel tossed two more touchdowns in the first quarter to put Oklahoma up 28-0, and Oklahoma State was never able to find its footing.

Texas 55, Kansas 14

Order up

Bijan Robinson plowed his way into the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown run to get Texas on the board.

Then, the Longhorns’ star running back notched his second touchdown of the game, running untouched into the end zone to make it 14-0.

Star power

Bijan Robinson completed the hat trick by running in for a 1-yard score as time expired in the first half.

Then, he Longhorns’ standout broke a pair of tackles, stutter-stepped and turned on the jets for a 32-yard touchdown run, good for his fourth score of the game as Texas ran away with the win.

No. 2 Ohio State 43, Maryland 30

Highlight reel

Ohio State’s star receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. made the tough catch along the sideline while getting interfered with for a 30-yard gain, which helped the Buckeyes take a 7-0 lead on the opening drive.

Terps on top at the half

Taulia Tagovailoa found CJ Dippre in the back of the end zone to give Maryland a 13-10 lead.

Blocked punt

After struggling to move the ball following its opening drive in the first half, Ohio State got things rolling in the second half by blocking a punt in Maryland territory. It was Lathan Ransom’s second straight game with a punt block. Two plays later, Ohio State scored to go up 17-13.

Finding their groove

With multiple injuries at running back, Ohio State turned to Dallan Hayden, who scored his second touchdown to extend the lead to 27-13.

Taulia time

Maryland’s QB kept the ball himself and ran it in for the TD. The deficit was cut to 27-21 following a successful two-point conversion.

Three for the backup RB

Hayden added a third touchdown right after Maryland’s score that briefly put the Buckeyes up by 12. The Terps, however, blocked the PAT and ran it all the way back for two points to make it a 10-point game.

Shades of his brother

Tagovailoa razzled and dazzled on fourth-and-goal, scrambling all the way to the sideline before throwing a touchdown to cut Ohio State’s lead to 33-30, but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback.

No. 9 Clemson 40, Miami (FL) 10

Can’t tackle DJ

DJ Uigalelei powered his way into the end zone to extend Clemson’s lead to 14-0 early on.

Wide open

Clemson had its way with Miami, as Luke Price got wide open on the play-action pass at the goal line to make it 24-0 en route to an easy win at home.

No. 4 TCU 29, Baylor 28

Booming early

Qualan Jones capped off Baylor’s opening drive by punching the ball into the end zone on a 10-yard scamper.

Qualan Jones couldn’t be stopped as his 10-yard rushing score early in the first quarter gave Baylor a 7-0 lead over TCU.

Ground game strong

TCU QB Max Duggan has made a name for himself all season for the plays he’s made with his arm. However, it was his legs that got the Horned Frogs on the board to even up the game late in the first quarter.

Battling

Things didn’t stay tied for long, however, as Kelsey Johnson took the reverse and ran up field for a 2-yard touchdown to give Baylor the lead back.

Right after Baylor scored its second touchdown of the game, Duggan connected with Taye Barber for a near-80-yard reception on the opening plan of the ensuing drive that set up Kendre Miller to run for a touchdown a few plays later.

INT frenzy

Baylor tried to get a touchdown in right before halftime. But TCU defensive back Bud Clark had other plans, picking off a pass in the end zone to keep the game tied going into halftime.

Then, Baylor got an interception of its own after TCU’s star QB tried to go for the home run ball to break a 14-14 tie. Instead, the Bears ended up with the ball.

TCU on top

The Horned Frogs took the lead for the first time in the game when Duggan threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Gunnar Henderson, who was wide-open coming out of the backfield.

Bears back on top

After running one in earlier, Johnson made the tough grab at the goal line to give the Bears the lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Then, Baylor RB Richard Reese pounded one into the end zone on for a 1-yard touchdown to extend Baylor’s lead, 28-20.

Mad scramble to kick for the win!

Emari Demercado ran into the end zone with ease for the 3-yard score to cut Baylor’s lead to 28-26 with just over two minutes remaining, but TCU wasn’t able to tie the game due to a failed 2-point conversion.

TCU tested its kicker by calling a running play on third-and-long with just 22 seconds left. However, Griffin Kell remained cool, calm and collected to nail the field goal as time expired to give the Horned Frogs the win and keep them unbeaten.

No. 3 Michigan 19, Illinois 17

Hot start

Michigan running back and Heisman hopeful Blake Corum juked multiple defenders on the game’s opening play for a 35-yard gain before scoring later in the drive to put the Wolverines up 7-0.

Injury watch

As Michigan aimed to score its second touchdown of the game, Corum fumbled, grabbing at his left knee and remaining on the turf for a few moments afterward before walking off the field under his own power.

Corum was cleared to return after undergoing tests on his left knee during halftime. He reentered the game on Michigan’s second play from scrimmage in the second half and carried the ball for a 5-yard gain.

That was Corum’s only touch in the second half, however, leaving his status for next week’s meeting with Ohio State (Saturday, 12 p.m. ET, FOX) in question.

Evening it up

Illinois finally got into the end zone midway through the third quarter when Chase Brown broke through the pile for an 8-yard score to make it a 10-10 game. Then, Brown burst open for a 37-yard touchdown run that put Illinois up 17-10 and gave Michigan its first fourth-quarter deficit of the season.

Jake Moody nailed a 35-yard field goal to complete the comeback for Michigan.

BEST OF THE REST:

Upset alert!

Vanderbilt pulled off a 31-24 upset over Florida on Saturday, making it just the second time in 32 games the Commodores have beaten the Gators.

No. 1 recruit making top plays

In shades of his college coach, Travis Hunter was scoring touchdowns on both sides of the ball for Jackson State. The freshman had a pick-six before making an impressive touchdown catch.
