January 6 committee senses momentum, sources say

The House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack is moving to capitalise on new momentum as it embarks on its final push to complete roughly 100 remaining depositions and conclude the evidence-gathering phase of the inquiry.

The panel has scored two major wins in recent days: more than six hours of testimony from Donald Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, and a conclusion by a federal judge that the former president committed felonies to overturn the 2020 election.

Members on the committee believe Kushner’s cooperation might prompt other Trump officials to assist as the panel inches closer to Trump’s inner circle and the former president himself, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The panel has also been buoyed by the federal court ruling that said Trump “more likely than not” violated the law over 6 January, reaffirming the purpose of the investigation and making it harder for Trump’s allies to defy the inquiry, the sources said.

And members on the committee believe that opening contempt of Congress proceedings against the Trump aides Peter Navarro and Dan Scavino for ignoring subpoenas, will reinforce the message that the panel will punish non-compliance, the sources said.

“There’s a momentum to this process when there’s cooperation,” Jamie Raskin, one of the congressmen on the panel, said of the burst of recent activity. “When people see that others are doing the right thing, it gives them the courage to do the right thing.”

The devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on poor and low-income communities across America is laid bare in a new report released on Monday that concludes that while the virus did not discriminate between rich and poor, society and government did.

As the US draws close to the terrible landmark of 1 million deaths from coronavirus, the glaringly disproportionate human toll that has been exacted is exposed by the Poor People’s Pandemic Report. Based on a data analysis of more than 3,000 counties across the US, it finds that people in poorer counties have died overall at almost twice the rate of those in richer counties.

Looking at the most deadly surges of the virus, the disparity in death rates grows even more pronounced. During the third pandemic wave in the US, over the winter of 2020 and 2021, death rates were four and a half times higher in the poorest counties than those with the highest median incomes.

During the recent Omicron wave, that divergence in death rates stood at almost three times.

Such a staggering gulf in outcomes cannot be explained by differences in vaccination rates, the authors find, with more than half of the population of the poorest counties having received two vaccine shots. A more relevant factor is likely to be that the poorest communities had twice the proportion of people who lack health insurance compared with the richer counties.

“The findings of this report reveal neglect and sometimes intentional decisions to not focus on the poor,” said Bishop William Barber, co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign which jointly prepared the research. “The neglect of poor and low-wealth people in this country during a pandemic is immoral, shocking and unjust.”

NBC broke news of the 44th president’s visit to the 46th, his own vice-president, Joe Biden. It also pointed out that the White House released a video last year in which Obama and Biden discussed their healthcare work.

“Joe Biden,” Obama said then, “we did this together. We always talked about how if we could get the principle of universal coverage established, we could then build on it.”

Confirming the Tuesday event, the White House said Biden would “take additional action to further strengthen the ACA and save families hundreds of dollars a month on their healthcare”.

Donald Trump has endorsed the former governor and vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin for the vacant congressional seat in Alaska.

“Sarah shocked many when she endorsed me very early in 2016, and we won big,” the former president said in a statement on Sunday night.

“Now, it’s my turn! Sarah has been a champion for Alaska values, Alaska energy, Alaska jobs and the great people of Alaska.”

In 2016, Palin was the first current or former state office holder to endorse Trump. She announced her own run on Friday.

The Alaska House seat is open after the death of Don Young, the Republican who held it for nearly 50 years. An open primary will pit more than 50 contenders from all parties against each other.

Joe Biden called Rupert Murdoch “the most dangerous man in the world”, according to a forthcoming book.

The comment, from mid-2021, is reported in This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden and the Battle for America’s Future by Jonathan Martin and Alex Burns, two New York Times reporters.

The book is due out in May. Last month, Politico reported passages in which Jill Biden, now the first lady, is critical of her husband’s decision to pick Kamala Harris as his running mate.

Reporting Biden’s remark about Murdoch, CNN said the president had never spoken in public about the 91-year-old media baron and Fox News owner.

The president did tell a town hall audience he sometimes “turn[s] on Fox to find out how popular I am”. He also apologised to a Fox News White House reporter, Peter Doocy, for calling him a “stupid son of a bitch”.

According to Burns and Martin, Biden “assessed” Murdoch to be “one of the most destructive forces in the United States”.

Fox News anchors including Tucker Carlson, have prominently relayed coronavirus misinformation and spoken favorably of Vladimir Putin and Russia. The network has been sued for giving voice to Donald Trump’s lies about electoral fraud in his defeat by Biden, who is now a target for daily ridicule by Fox News hosts.

The White House and Fox News did not immediately comment.

Ukraine’s president appears in video message at 2022 Grammys – video | US news

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy has appeared in a video message at the Grammy awards to ask for support in telling the story of Ukraine’s invasion by Russia. During the message that aired, he likened the Russian invasion to a deadly silence threatening to extinguish the dreams and lives of the Ukrainian people, including children. ‘Our musicians wear body armour instead of tuxedos. They sing to the wounded in hospitals, even to those who can’t hear them … But the music will break through anyway,’ he said. ‘Fill the silence with your music. Fill it today to tell our story. Tell the truth about the war on your social networks, on TV, support us in any way you can any, but not silence. And then peace will come to all our cities the war is destroying,’ Zelenskiy said

Here’s some more on Joe Biden speaking later about the Covid-19 pandemic. The president is set to announce a new White House initiative to incorporate a “one-stop shop website” designed to give Americans better access to tools and information in fighting coronavirus.

The president will announce that the US is at “a new moment in the pandemic” with lifesaving tools such as improved testing, vaccines and treatments available, and that the website covid.gov will consolidate guidance into a single point of information.

“With a click of a button, people will be able to find where to access all of these tools, as well as receive the latest CDC data on the level of Covid-19 in their community,” a press release about Biden’s announcement states.

“Protecting the American people… now and into the future relies on affordable and accessible tools like vaccines, treatments, tests and high-quality masks. Through efforts like covid.gov and test-to-treat, the Administration continues to take steps to make these tools even more readily available. Now, we need Congress to do its part and continue to fund the Covid-19 response.”

The funding of vaccinations, and the wider government response to the pandemic, has become a bone of contention, even as rates of infection and the number of deaths have tumbled since the peak of the Omicron variant.

In a statement earlier this month, the White House blasted Congress for failing to provide an additional $22.5bn the Biden administration says it needs to continue, among other initiatives, the funding and distribution of vaccines nationwide, and warned of the risk of a new wave of infections.

On Tuesday, the US food and drug administration (FDA) and federal centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) approved a second booster vaccine for Americans over 50, and those with compromised immune systems.

Many health officials are concerned about the fast spread of the BA.2 Omicron sub-variant, which has now become dominant in the US, the New York Times reports.

Here’s more about the FDA approving a second round of booster shots:

Donald Trump has claimed to have hit a hole-in-one at his golf course in Florida while playing with a former world No1, Ernie Els.

The former president released a lengthy statement about the shot, which was said to have happened on Saturday, late on Monday.

Earlier, a federal judge said Trump likely committed felonies during his attempts to overturn his election defeat by Joe Biden and the January 6 committee recommended criminal contempt charges for two aides, Dan Scavino and Peter Navarro.

If the hole-in-one statement that followed was meant to change the conversation, it was not Trump’s first such gambit.

It was however marginally less dramatic than his move last week, when a prosecutor who resigned from an investigation of Trump’s business affairs said he believed the former president committed “numerous” felonies.

Trump followed that with a 108-page lawsuit alleging a vast conspiracy to delegitimise his presidency, led by Hillary Clinton.

Trump said he scored his hole-in-one on the par-three 7th at Trump International, West Palm Beach. He said there was both a “slight wind” and a “rather strong wind”, as he hit a five iron. The ball, he said, “bounced twice and then went clank, into the hole.”

A video accompanied the statement. It showed Trump picking a ball out of the hole, but not the shot he said put it there.

Referring to Trump’s status as the 45th president, Els tweeted: “Great shot on Saturday 45! Fun to watch the ball roll in for a hole-in-one.”

It has been widely reported that Trump cheats at golf. In 2019, the golf writer Rick Reilly published a book, Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump.

Here’s an interview with Reilly, by Donald McRae:

Biden heads to Poland for meetings on Ukraine refugee crisis – US politics live | US news

Sullivan answered questions from reporters a number of topics.

Concern that Russia may use chemical weapons was an “important topic of conversation” during Biden’s visit to Europe. Biden vowed to respond “in kind” if Russia uses chemical weapons in Ukraine.

Pressed on what that means, as chemical weapons are illegal under international law and Biden has repeatedly said the US would not send troops to fight Russia in Ukraine, Sullivan said it was an issue being discussed and prepared for both militarily and diplomatically as well as among allied leaders.

“We are working through contingency planning for a range of different scenarios,” he said. “It is difficult to give precision to these kinds of hypotheticals because of course, the form of use, the location of use, the context of use, all have a bearing on the specificity of the response. But in broad terms, I believe that there is convergence around the fundamental nature of how the alliance would respond to these issues.”

He also told reporters that the US does not believe China has granted Russia’s request for military aid.

“We have not seen the Chinese move forward with the provision of military equipment to Russia, but it’s something we continue to watch every day,” he said.

Asked whether the president expected to discuss a Polish proposal to send international peacekeepers into Ukraine, Sullivan said he wasn’t sure if the Polish president would raise that with Biden during their meeting and said the US needed more information before it responded.

He also said there is “no update” on Ukraine’s request for more warplanes, after the US rejected a proposal from Poland to transfer Russian-made MiG fighter planes from a US base in Germany to Ukraine out of concern that it might escalate the conflict with Russia.

Asked about how Biden views his trip to Europe, Sullivan emphasized a point Biden stressed in his remarks on Thursday: that unity will take work over time.

“Part of the reason that he decided that we needed to do this is because the early weeks unity can be carried forward by momentum and inertia and adrenaline,” Sullivan said. “But this could go on for some time, and to sustain that unity as costs rise, as the tragedy unfolds, that’s hard work. And the president wanted to get everybody together to say, ‘we’ve got to do that work.’ …It takes an American president coming over to really try to drive this forward.”

Mitch McConnell says he will not support Ketanji Brown Jackson nomination – live | US news

The House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack will consider holding in criminal contempt of Congress next week two of Donald Trump’s most senior White House advisers in Dan Scavino and Peter Navarro, the panel announced on Thursday.

The move to initiate contempt proceedings against the two Trump aides amounts to a biting rebuke of their refusal to cooperate with the inquiry, as the panel deploys its most punitive measures to reaffirm the consequences of noncompliance.

House investigators said in a notice that it would consider a contempt report against Scavino and Navarro in a business meeting scheduled for next Monday on Capitol Hill, after they defied subpoenas compelling them to provide documents and testimony.

The select committee is expected to vote unanimously to send the contempt report for a vote before the House of Representatives, according to a source close to the panel, so that the Trump aides can be referred to the justice department for prosecution.

The select committee took a special interest in Scavino, since, as Trump’s former deputy chief of staff for communications, he was intimately involved in a months-long effort by the Trump White House to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Ketanji Brown Jackson faces questions on second day of confirmation hearings – live | US news

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican of South Carolina, is asking a series of combative questions with the intent of using Jackson’s hearing to make a point about Democrats’ handling of past judicial nominations.

He opened with a series of personal questions about Jackson’s faith.

He asked her what faith she was. “Protestant … non-denominational,” she said, adding: “Personally, my faith is very important. But as you know, there is no religious test under article 6—”

Before she could finish her response, he dove in with another question, asking whether she could fairly judge a Catholic and asked on a scale of 1 to 10 how faithful she was and the frequency with she attended church. She said she was reluctant to respond to this line of questioning, to which Graham told her he only goes to church about three times per year.

The point of his questions, he said, was to underscore the inappropriateness of Democrats’ question about the faith of Amy Coney Barrett.

“Just imagine what would happen if people on late-night television called you an effing nut speaking in tongues because you’ve practiced the Catholic faith in a way they couldn’t relate to or found uncomfortable,” he said. “Judge Barrett, I thought, was treated very, very poorly.”

Graham also raised the nomination of Janice Rogers Brown, a Black jurist whose nomination to the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit by president George Bush was filibustered by Democratic senators, including by then-senator Joe Biden.

Speaking colorfully as he does, Graham claimed that conservative Black women faced a double standard.

If you’re an African American conservative woman, you’re fair game to have your life turned upside down, to be filibustered no matter how qualified you are,” Graham said. “And if you express your faith as a conservative, all of a sudden you’re an effing nut.”

“We’re tired of it, and it’s not going to happen to you,” he asserted.

Tom Brady praises Vitalik Buterin after Twitter trolls call Ethereum founder ‘TB12 on meth’

On Friday, TIME Magazine published a cover story on Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, calling him “The Prince of Crypto” and explaining his efforts to fix the world of cryptocurrency.

After the article’s release, Twitter trolls started making fun of Buterin’s appearance, comparing him to a ‘dystopian’ Tom Brady. Buterin himself pointed out the barrage of Tweets demeaning his physical aspect, saying that he didn’t even know who Brady was and had to ask people around him to explain.

“I didn’t even know who Tom Brady is, had to ask people around me. My best guess was that he was the actor from Mission Impossible [Tom Cruise],” wrote Buterin.

Some of the harsh comments included people calling him too ugly to be that rich and saying his face is deserving of being shoved into a locker. However, most of the trolling consisted of saying Buterin looked like Brady if he had stopped working out or if he ate dog food, among others.

Tom Brady responds to Vitalik Buterin

Nearly 24 hours ater Buterin’s post, Brady replied by thanking the Ethereum founder for his work in the field of crypto, crediting him for making it possible to start his NFT company Autograph. Brady went on to call Buterin a ‘GOAT‘ and said he hopes to meet with him one day.

What’s up Vitalik! You may not know me but just wanted to say I’m a big fan of yours,” wrote Brady. “Thank you for everything you’ve built in the world of crypto, otherwise @Autograph wouldn’t have been possible. Hope I get to meet you some day you’re the GOAT.”

Who is Vitalik Buterin?

Buterin is a Russian-born computer programmer raised in Canada worth an estimated $1.5 billion. He co-founded Ethereum in 2014 and told TIME Magazine that he’s now working to fix the world he helped create.

“One of the decisions I made in 2022 is to try to be more risk-taking and less neutral,” Buterin said. “I would rather Ethereum offend some people than turn into something that stands for nothing.”

Biden calls Putin a ‘murderous dictator’ and says Russia ‘waging an immoral war’ – US politics live | US news

Lloyd Austin, the US defense secretary, is in Bratislava, Slovakia, and held a presser with his Slovakian counterpart, defense minister Jaroslav Nad.

Another journalist asked about the option of supplying S-300 systems to Ukraine, the Soviet-designed, long-range surface-to-air missile system.

Austin said: “What has been successful for the Ukrainian forces is that they’ve been able to really prevent Russia from establishing air supremacy and they have done through effective use of air defense systems, both medium-range and short-range systems.”

Ordinary observers are probably a bit surprised to hear him say that Russia has not established air supremacy when it’s bombarding Ukraine from the air in ruthless fashion. Zelenskiy also clearly thinks that there is, indeed, more in Nato’s power that it could do. And more weapons are under discussion, as we’ve written.

However, Austin continued: “So our goal has been to continue to reinforce those things that have worked for the Ukrainian forces. So we are talking to a number of our allies and partners to get as much capability as we can to continue to provide help.”

Austin is asked about the long-range missile systems Russia is using to attack Ukraine and what he is discussing with allies about alternatives to the S-300 system, in order to help Ukraine in “the long-range arena”.

Austin said: “The systems that are being used by the Russians…they are using a lot of rockets, missiles and artillery. There are a number of things that can be used to counter that. We see that drones have been very effective, we’ve also seen that having the ability to conduct counter-fire with rockets and artillery is also very effective so I think increasingly we’ll see the Ukrainian forces turn to those methods to counter that.”

“The rockets, or actually cruise missiles, that you mentioned are fired from aerial platforms, I think you know that those were fired actually from inside of Russia so a no-fly zone would not have prevented that activity.”

Nad said supplying S-300 systems is being discussed and there is a willingness as long as there’s backfill to ensure the security of Nato and the individual members’ territories by replacing the systems given to Ukraine.
