Sean McVay: Cam Akers needs an increased level of urgency, accountability

USA TODAY Sports

Earlier this week, Cam Akers said everyone would see Thursday night how healthy is. Health isn’t an issue; maximizing his opportunities is.

Coach Sean McVay challenged the running back to do just that after Akers played only 12 snaps in the Rams’ opener against the Bills.

“No matter who you’re talking about, you want to see guys do the little things the right way, compete with and without the ball,” McVay said, via Sarah Barshop of ESPN. “There were some instances where there were some positive things and some things that he can do better, but we want to see just an increased level of urgency and accountability snap in and snap out from him.”

Akers had three carries for no yards. Starter Darrell Henderson played 54 snaps and ran for 47 yards on 13 carries and caught five passes for 26 yards.

Akers might have seen even fewer chances if not for the early ankle injury to Kyren Williams.

With Williams out 6-8 weeks, the Rams will need Akers to backup Henderson.

McVay said he knows what Akers is “capable of,” which is why he’s confident Akers will be “that guy that we’ve all seen at the right moments as this season continues to progress.”

“We’ve all seen how talented and what a special player this guy’s capable of being,” McVay said. “And I want to see him reach his highest potential. And that’s really all there is to it. It’s not about anything other than when he and Darrell [Henderson] are playing at a high level, I feel really good about those two guys at running back for us.

“And the opportunities were minimal. There were some things that within each of those individual plays that I think that we can be better collectively, starting with me, then to the players around him, but also with Cam. And so it’s more of a reflection of the confidence that I know what he can be and I’m confident that he’ll be that guy that we’ve all seen at the right moments as this season continues to progress. And that’s our job to help get it out of him.”

Akers missed most of last season after tearing his Achilles, returning in time to play the regular-season finale as well as the team’s four postseason games. In the 2021 postseason, he rushed for 172 yards and caught eight passes for 76 yards. He didn’t look like he did in 2020 when he had 156 touches for 748 yards and three touchdowns.

Myles Garrett: No added urgency facing Baker Mayfield, but I’d enjoy a couple sacks

Getty Images

Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield said on Monday that there will be some extra juice in Week One because he is facing the Browns in his first game with his new team, but one of his former teammates said on Tuesday that the feeling isn’t mutual.

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett went first overall the year before Cleveland took Mayfield in the same spot and the hope was that the two players would usher in a new era of success in Cleveland. They got to the playoffs once and won a game in four seasons, which wasn’t enough for the Browns to pull the plug on the partnership and replace Mayfield by trading for Deshaun Watson.

Garrett said that history doesn’t add anything to his motivation for Week 1, although he admitted he would like to reunite with Mayfield at the end of a couple of plays during the game.

“He’s my former teammate, but there’s no rivalry there between me and him and there’s no rivalry there between the Panthers and the Browns,” Garrett said, via Cleveland.com. “Yes, he was here but it doesn’t mean I have an added sense of urgency to get to him. I want to play my best and whatever’s in the cards that’s what’s in it for me. If I can help my team win, if I can put them in the best position to win, I’m gonna do that. If I can get a couple sacks along the way, I’d kind of enjoy that too.”

With the Browns missing Watson for 11 games, the Browns will take the kind of urgency that leads to multiple sacks from Garrett every week. If they should help ensure that Mayfield doesn’t get his first Panthers win against them, they’ll be even happier.

Jayson Tatum and Boston Celtics approaching Game 5 against Miami Heat with ‘more sense of urgency, especially to start’

MIAMI — In three of the first four games of the Eastern Conference finals, the team leading at the end of the first quarter has come out on top each time.

So, as the Boston Celtics prepare to take on the Miami Heat in Game 5 at FTX Arena on Wednesday night, with the series knotted at two games apiece, they are aware they need to zero in on a strong start to this game to come away with a desperately needed road victory.

“Whatever happened last game is last game, regardless if we won by 25 or 2,” Celtics star Jayson Tatum said after Boston’s shootaround Wednesday morning. “They all count as one [win]. So we shouldn’t feel any better about ourselves because we blew them out [in Game 4].

“And I think we shouldn’t relax. We should kind of look at it as a new series, and tonight is a must-win game. And I think when you approach something as a must-win and have more sense of urgency, especially to start, I think that’s how we should approach tonight, and that goes in with the first five, six minutes of the game.”

For the past two rounds, dating back to the start of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Milwaukee Bucks, the Celtics are now a pristine 5-0 when they lost the previous game. But coming off wins, Boston is a dismal 1-4, with its lone victory coming at home in Game 7 against Milwaukee.

If Boston is to get out of this series and reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2010, that record must change — and the Celtics will have to win another game in Miami after winning Game 2 here last week.

In addition to starting the game off well, the other obvious difference in each game is Boston’s ability — or lack thereof — to take care of the ball. In the Celtics’ two victories, they’ve committed only a handful of turnovers. In their two losses, they’ve thrown the ball all over the gym, allowing the Heat to get one easy transition basket after another.

“I think we’re confident,” guard Payton Pritchard said. “We know what we have to do, take care of the ball, set the tone defensively, but we’ve been in this situation in the last series.”

“It just starts from the jump … it starts with our intensity. Every time we come off a loss, we play like our backs are against the wall. We got to take that mentality into every game, and obviously just take care of the ball. The games we lost, we had 39 turnovers. The games we won, we had 18 turnovers, so that’s a big difference.”

Boston is also waiting to see whether guard Marcus Smart and center Robert Williams III can play, as both are listed as questionable for a second straight game. Smart is dealing with the right ankle sprain that held him out of Game 4, and Celtics coach Ime Udoka said he still has “pain, swelling and soreness” ahead of Game 5. Smart will again get treatment throughout the day leading up to tipoff before a decision is made on his status, Udoka said.

Williams, meanwhile, is also dealing with ongoing soreness, and his stems from the left knee that has given him a variety of issues for the past two months. Williams had surgery on his meniscus late in the regular season, causing him to miss most of Boston’s first-round series against Brooklyn, then missed three games in the Milwaukee series because of soreness stemming from a bone bruise.

He also sat out Boston’s Game 3 loss in this series with soreness in that knee, then returned in Game 4 — and he appeared to be limping at times in the third quarter.

As with Smart, Udoka said Williams will receive treatment throughout the day before his status will be determined.

‘Urgency’: WHO expects more monkeypox cases globally | World Health Organization News

World Health Organization reports 92 confirmed monkeypox cases and 28 suspected ones in 12 nations as the mysterious spread continues.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says it expects to identify more cases of monkeypox as it expands surveillance in countries where the disease is not typically found.

As of Saturday, 92 confirmed cases and 28 suspected cases of monkeypox were reported from 12 member states that are not endemic for the virus, the UN agency said, adding it will provide further guidance and recommendations in the coming days for countries on how to mitigate the spread of monkeypox.

“Available information suggests that human-to-human transmission is occurring among people in close physical contact with cases who are symptomatic,” the agency said.

‘Genital form’

Monkeypox is an infectious disease that is usually mild and is endemic in parts of West and Central Africa. Although it belongs to the same virus family as smallpox, its symptoms are milder.

People usually recover within two to four weeks without needing to be hospitalised, but the disease is occasionally deadly.

It is spread by close contact so it can be relatively easily contained through such measures as self-isolation and hygiene.

“What seems to be happening now is that it has got into the population as a sexual form, as a genital form, and is being spread as are sexually transmitted infections, which has amplified its transmission around the world,” said WHO official David Heymann, an infectious disease specialist.

Heymann said an international committee of experts met via video conference to look at what needed to be studied about the outbreak and communicated to the public, including whether there is any asymptomatic spread, the people who are at most risk, and the various routes of transmission.

He said the meeting was convened “because of the urgency of the situation”. The committee is not the group that would suggest declaring a public health emergency of international concern, WHO’s highest form of alert, which applies to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said close contact was the key transmission route, as lesions typical of the disease are very infectious. For example, parents caring for sick children are at risk, as are health workers, which is why some countries have started inoculating teams treating monkeypox patients using vaccines for smallpox, a related virus.

Many of the current cases have been identified at sexual health clinics.

‘You can protect yourself’

US President Joe Biden said on Sunday the recent cases of monkeypox identified in Europe and the United States were something “to be concerned about”.

In his first public comments on the disease, Biden added: “It is a concern in that if it were to spread it would be consequential. They haven’t told me the level of exposure yet but it is something that everybody should be concerned about. We’re working on it hard to figure out what we do.”

He added that work is under way to determine what vaccine might be effective.

Early genomic sequencing of a handful of the cases in Europe has suggested a similarity with the strain that spread in a limited fashion in Britain, Israel and Singapore in 2018.

Heymann said it was “biologically plausible” that the virus had been circulating outside of the countries where it is endemic, but had not led to major outbreaks as a result of COVID-19 lockdowns, social distancing, and travel restrictions.

He stressed the monkeypox outbreak did not resemble the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic because it does not transmit as easily. Those who suspect they may have been exposed or who show symptoms – including bumpy rash and fever – should avoid close contact with others.

“There are vaccines available but the most important message is you can protect yourself,” said Heymann.

Skull Session: Joe Burrow is “Definitely Still a Buckeye,” Jim Knowles Feels the Urgency, and Haskell Garrett Quarrels With a Michigan Man

It looks like Sam Hubbard’s going to be playing with a little more juice than usual on Super Bowl Sunday…

Win it for Harambe.

Word of the Day: Onus.

“DEFINITELY STILL A BUCKEYE.” Listen, the whole “is Joe Burrow a Buckeye?” thing is getting absolutely exhausting to discuss and write about, so hopefully this quote can put this entire conversation to rest so we can all move on.

Cool? Cool.

If you want to root for him because of his Ohio State connection, very cool! Go for it!

If you think that’s really weird and sad to call him a Buckeye because he actually had all of his success at LSU and not Ohio State, that certainly makes sense! Keep on feeling that way if you’d like!

Personally, as someone who writes about Buckeye football for Arby’s money, I feel like the Ohio State connection is strong enough to continue to mention him in some capacity on this website as he helps lead the Bengals to their first Super Bowl victory alongside five of his former Buckeye teammates.

If that bothers you, please feel free to simply keep scrolling when those words come up on your screen. Maybe I will start issuing a trigger warning from now on.

FIX IT NOW. The good news is, Jim Knowles has fixed a broken defense before. The bad news is, it took him about four years last time.

But he’s well aware he doesn’t have that kind of time at Ohio State.

However, this is a challenge unlike anything the 56-year-old Knowles has taken on before. True, he’s orchestrated defensive turnarounds in his previous stops, but those took time. His Oklahoma State defense was one of the best in the country in 2021, the result of four years of getting his system to take hold in Stillwater.

“It’s not lost on me that I don’t have four years here,” Knowles said. “This program is ready to win every single game right now, and we have to get the defense to that level.”

It will take time to get the system fully installed, years even. Knowles won’t have everything in place in his first season. But he feels the defense will be able to make real strides in Year 1. The key is not to overload his players with too much, too soon while still making life difficult on opposing offensive coordinators and quarterbacks, causing “indecision” on their end without making his own players overthink things.

“From what I’ve seen, we’re not far off,” Knowles said. “I think the guys that were here are good coaches. I just feel like we can gain a lot through presentation, being systematic, having answers, having variety so that the offense doesn’t know what to expect, and being aggressive. I think there are things we can do just through the packaging of it. But I don’t think we’re far off.”

Hypothetically, the players should be more talented in this rebuild than they were at the last stop, so you would think that would help. Taking a dude who built a top-5 defense on three-star players and handing him a roster full of four and five-star players *should* yield solid results.

But truthfully, it doesn’t even have to be perfect – especially in the first year. The reality is, even if Ohio State had a defense that was just slightly above average in 2020 or 2021, it could have won a national title. So with how gas this Buckeye offense is going to be next year, I’ll be fine with that.

As long as there’s noticeable and meaningful improvement in year one, I’m cool with waiting to see the finished product. I’m even giddier about the idea of him taking on the long-term “head coach of the defense” role for the foreseeable future.

THE RIVALRY NEVER STOPS. Haskell Garrett was on the bad end of a battle with a former Michigan offensive lineman at Senior Bowl practices yesterday and was sidelined with an apparent shoulder injury.

But the good news is, it looks like he’s all good to play in Saturday’s game despite the injury. And he ain’t happy about the way he was blocked.

The rivalry is alive and well, even in Mobile, Alabama.

WHY NOT? You know what’s missing from Ohio State’s 2022 recruiting class? A five-star defensive end. But the Buckeyes have a chance to fix that!

The last extended pursuit of a five-star defensive end had good results. I’m certainly down with trying again.
