Culver’s restaurants switching from Pepsi to Coca-Cola, upsetting fans

Culver’s, the Midwest chain known for its butter burgers and frozen custard, recently announced it is switching from Pepsi to Coca-Cola, upsetting many of its longtime fans.

The franchise broke the news last Wednesday, telling media outlets the transition was in progress and would take some time for its nearly 900 restaurants spread out across 26 states, FOX 6 reported.

Parting ways with Pepsi means that restaurants will no longer serve its signature as well as Mountain Dew, Sierra Mist, and Tropicana Drinks.

VIRAL OFF-MENU WAFFLE HOUSE SANDWICH THAT STARTED AS ‘PREGNANCY CRAVING’ RECEIVES RESISTANCE FROM WORKERS

It remains unclear which Coca-Cola products will be offered, but the company owns Spire, Fanta, and Minute Maid, in addition to many variations on its namesake beverage.

One Twitter user wrote that news of the switch “ruined my entire day.”

In response to the tweet, the company confirmed the transition, but said many Culver’s Signature Root Beer, Diet Root Beer, Dr. Pepper, and fresh brewed sweetened and unsweetened tea will still be available.”

Another Twitter user wrote to Culver’s: “Had my last @culvers today. When you switch back to @pepsi I will be back.”

Yet another Twitter user wrote in response to a post about loyalty that the company’s decision to get rid of Pepsi products has “got me pondering.”

A Facebook user posted a comment on the company’s main page, saying she would no longer be going to Culver’s because they will now be offering coke products like the restaurants she avoided.

“Now you’re going to be like them,” she wrote. “Sorry about this decision. You had the best Pepsi on tap. Now I have to search for another restaurant that has Pepsi.”

NFL Week 16 grades: Tom Brady’s Buccaneers get ‘C’ for Christmas win; Packers earn ‘B+’ for upsetting Dolphins

The NFL officially turned into a winter wonderland in Week 16.

The league had eight games that kicked off with a temperature below freezing on Saturday, which was a record for a single day. Things were so cold in Nashville that the Texans-Titans game actually got delayed an hour due to rolling blackouts in Tennessee that were ordered due to the extreme cold.

The Panthers played their coldest home game in franchise history (20 degrees at kickoff), which was a 37-23 win over the Lions. The Ravens also had their coldest home game in franchise history (17 degrees), a 17-9 win over the Falcons. Not to be outdone, the Seahawks dealt with a temperature (12 degrees) that was the coldest in franchise history for any regular-season game.

One game where weather wasn’t an issue was in Minnesota, where the Vikings beat the Giants 27-24 on Greg Joseph’s game-winning field goal from 61 yards out. The kick was the fifth-longest game-winning field goal in NFL history. The Vikings are now 11-0 in one-score games this season, which is the most one-score victories in a single season in NFL history.

So what kind of grade do you get for winning on a 61-yard field goal? Let’s get to the Week 16 grades and find out.

On Christmas Sunday, the elements were much better as we saw another Tom Brady comeback in the desert, Aaron Rodgers keeping the Packers alive in Miami and Baker Mayfield putting up 50 points in L.A.

If you’re looking for a deeper dive on the Jaguars’ big win over the Jets that was played Thursday, you can check that out here.

Padres keys to upsetting Dodgers in NLDS

LOS ANGELES — Having played six series against the Dodgers in his first year as Padres manager — and having lost all six of those series — Bob Melvin sat at the podium in the Petco Park interview room last month and was asked about the prospect of facing Los Angeles for a seventh time in October.

“I hope we do,” Melvin said, confidently.

No, it wasn’t quite the careful-what-you-wish-for brazenness it might sound like. The Padres were fighting for their playoff lives. An October date with the Dodgers meant they’d have reached the postseason, then won a Wild Card Series on the road.

Lately, the rivalry has looked as lopsided as it’s ever been. The Dodgers took 14 of their 19 meetings with the Padres during the regular season, and they’ve won nine straight series between them overall. But the Padres, defiant as ever, insist this time might be different.

Here are four reasons they might be right:

1. This is the best baseball they’ve played

Convenient, isn’t it? The Padres picked the Wild Card Series against the Mets to play perhaps their two most complete baseball games of the season.

They got pitching and defense and production from the entirety of their starting lineup.

“That’s the point of it all — we need everybody,” said center fielder Trent Grisham, the breakout star of that Wild Card Series. “That’s what everyone in this locker room wanted to see. We didn’t want it just to be Manny [Machado] taking over, like he has all year. I mean — we want that. But we want it to be more than that.

“It was a bunch of different guys, and in a locker room that breeds confidence and breeds belief, and that’s what you need in a postseason.”

Of course, there’s a reason the Padres haven’t been at their best when facing the Dodgers: The Dodgers are good and very hard to play against. But if there were ever a time for the Padres to take their best shot, it’s now — with a suddenly deep offense, one of the league’s best defenses, and …

2. A healthier, steadier pitching staff

The Dodgers are World Series favorites for good reason. And yet, doesn’t it feel like they enter the playoffs with more than their share of question marks — particularly on the pitching side of things?

They don’t have a settled closer. Walker Buehler is out. Tony Gonsolin’s role is unclear.

The Padres, on the other hand, probably couldn’t be in a much better place with regards to their staff. (Unless they’d have beaten the Mets in two and had Musgrove lined up for Game 1.)

Still, their rotation of Mike Clevinger-Yu Darvish-Blake Snell-Musgrove is one of the best in baseball, and they’ve all pitched well lately. In the bullpen, the roles have fallen into place nicely, now that Josh Hader looks like Josh Hader again. Robert Suarez and Luis García have asserted themselves as reliable high-leverage options.

There are holes in the middle innings. And the Dodgers still have one of the most complete pitching staffs around. But the Padres like the way theirs stacks up.

3. Soto hasn’t fully asserted himself on this rivalry … yet

So the Padres are looking to pull a stunning NLDS upset of the Dodgers, you say? As it would happen, they employ someone with experience in precisely that matter. Juan Soto did so with the 2019 Nationals — his game-tying homer off Clayton Kershaw in Game 5 serving as one of that series’ enduring images.

The Padres dealt for Soto in early August, and his first full series with the team was a sweep in L.A. He was defiant afterward, aghast when a reporter asked about the gap between the two clubs.

“We’re both in the big leagues,” Soto said. “We both can play.”

Soto’s Padres tenure is off to a slow start — at least by his lofty standards. But he might be on the verge of an October breakout. He went 4-for-12 (.333) in the Wild Card Series with a backbreaking two-run single off dominant Mets closer Edwin Díaz. Afterward, Soto turned his attention to the Dodgers.

“We have a pretty good shot,” Soto said. “We’ve been facing them the whole year, so we know what they’ve got. We’ve just got to go out there and play good baseball like we did this series.”

4. The Padres might come out swinging

“We’ve been playing playoff games for basically the whole last month,” Padres general manager A.J. Preller said amid the chaos of Sunday’s celebrations. “We know the Dodgers well. They’re a phenomenal team. But there’s only four teams left in the National League. We’re one of them. We’ll be ready to go.”

There’s no doubt about that. The Padres played most of September with a renewed sense of urgency, while the Wild Card race tightened. (Really, that dates to a rare team meeting called by Melvin in which he called out his team for its lackluster performance on Sept. 15.)

Since then, the Padres have had something on the line practically every night — and they’ve played like it. The Dodgers, meanwhile, haven’t played a truly meaningful game in that span. By first pitch Tuesday night, they’ll have been sitting for five days.

If the Padres, in a best-of-five series, can deliver the first punch or two, it’d put the Dodgers somewhere they haven’t been very often in this rivalry — on their heels.

NFL Week 3 grades: Chiefs get a ‘D’ after upset loss to Colts, Dolphins earn an ‘A’ for upsetting Bills

It’s not often you see the Kansas City Chiefs fully implode, but that’s exactly what happened on Sunday during the team’s shocking 20-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. There was an offensive implosion, a defensive implosion and even a special teams implosion that might have actually been the worst one of all.

Offensively, the Colts defense seemed to frustrate Patrick Mahomes, who threw for just 84 yards in the first half. As Mahomes headed to the locker room at halftime, his frustrations seemed to boil over. The Chiefs quarterback got into a spat with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who decided to let the clock run out at the end of the half instead of trying to get into field goal range even though the Chiefs only needed about 25 yards to have a shot at a kick.

Despite the offense’s rough day, the Chiefs still had a chance to get this game into overtime, but those chances went out the window when Mahomes threw an interception on Kansas City’s final offensive play of the game.

The only thing uglier than Kansas City’s offensive play in this game was their special teams play. In what can only be described as a disaster, the special teams unit basically cost Kansas City the game. The horrid special teams play started in the first quarter when Skyler Moore muffed a punt that gave the Colts possession at Kansas City’s 4-yard line.

The Colts would score a touchdown three plays after the muffed punt to take an early 7-0 lead. As if that wasn’t bad enough, kicker Matt Ammendola missed both an extra point AND a field goal, which was obviously costly in a game where the Chiefs only lost by three points. The missed field goal came from just 34 yards away.

The Chiefs field goal team was also involved in one of the more bizarre calls of the day. With Kansas City facing a fourth-and-11, the Chiefs lined up for a 42-yard field goal, but Ammendola never got to attempt the kick because Andy Reid CALLED FOR A FAKE and things did not end well.

Between the fake field goal, the missed field goal and the missed extra point, that’s seven points the Chiefs left on the field. The Chiefs defense also made a costly mistake and we’ll talk about that below in our weekly grades.

Alright, let’s get to the grades for every game from Week 3. If you’re looking for a deeper dive on the Browns’ 29-17 win over the Steelers that was played on Thursday, be sure to click here.
