A ‘galaxy’ is unmasked as a pulsar — the brightest outside the Milky Way

The brightest extra-galactic pulsar has been identified in the Large Magellanic Cloud (pictured).Credit: Pennock et al.

Astronomers have confirmed that an object they thought was a distant galaxy is actually the brightest extra-galactic pulsar ever seen. The team made the discovery using a technique that blocks a particular type of polarized light, similar to polarized sunglasses, which could be used to spy more ‘hidden’ pulsars.

Pulsars are highly magnetized spinning neutron stars that form from the collapsed remnants of exploded stars. As pulsars spin, they release a stream of radio waves from their poles — a ‘pulse’ that can be detected using radio telescopes. Astronomers use pulsars to test theories of gravity and to look for evidence of gravitational waves.

The new pulsar, called PSR J0523−7125, is about 50,000 parsecs from Earth, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and is quite different from most known pulsars. Its pulse is very wide — more than twice the size of other known pulsars in the LMC, and it is exceptionally ‘bright’ on the radio spectrum, says Yuanming Wang, an astrophysicist at Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Canberra.

Wang and the team say the pulsar is ten times brighter than any other pulsar found outside the Milky Way. Their study is published in The Astrophysical Journal today1.

“Because of its unusual properties, this pulsar was missed by previous studies, despite how bright it is,” said co-author, Tara Murphy, a radio astronomer at the University of Sydney in Australia, in a press release.

New technique

Pulsars are typically identified from their faint pulse, flickering periodically. But in the case of PSR J0523−7125, its pulse is so wide and bright, that it didn’t fit the typical profile of a pulsar and was dismissed as a galaxy.

Wang and an international team of astronomers first suspected the object might be a pulsar in data from the Variables and Slow Transients survey, conducted using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope in Western Australia. The survey looks at a large amount of sky for highly variable radio wave sources, and collects circular polarization, among other data.

Emissions from pulsars are often highly polarized, and some of them oscillate in a circular way. Few space objects are polarized like this, which makes them stand out.

Using a computer programme, the team was able to block out wavelengths of light that were not circularly polarized, revealing the rare type of pulsar. Other telescopes, including the MeerKAT radio-astronomy telescope in South Africa, confirmed their finding (see Hidden pulsar).

“We should expect to find more pulsars using this technique. This is the first time we have been able to search for a pulsar’s polarization in a systematic and routine way,” said Murphy.

Yvette Cendes, a radio astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, says that radio astronomy hasn’t been as effective as optical astronomy at finding ‘transient’ objects — space objects like pulsars that come in and out of view. “Surveys like VAST are changing that,” she says.

“But just because you find a transient [object] doesn’t mean it’s easy to figure out what it is,” she says. Polarization data helped to narrow down the source of the object, which suggests the technique has the potential to identify other transients in the future, she says.

Although other telescopes are collecting polarization data, there have only been a few large-scale radio surveys using the circular polarization technique. In March, researchers using data from the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) telescope in the Netherlands found two new pulsars using the technique, which they detailed in a preprint posted on arXiv2.

‘The Masked Singer’ Season 7 Episode 3: Cyclops, Thingamabob Unmasked

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 7, Episode 3, of “The Masked Singer,” “The Double Unmasking — Round 1 Finals,” which aired March 23 on Fox.

Nope, the unmasking we’re all dreading still didn’t happen in Week 3 of “The Masked Singer,” as two more celebrities exited the show in a double elimination. Exiting this week were “Lost” and “Hawaii Five-0” star Jorge Garcia, who had performed as the Cyclops, and Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, revealed as the Thingamabob.

Garcia, as Cyclops (from “Team Bad”), ended his run after a stirring rendition of “Flashdance (What a Feeling),” by Irene Cara, while Mailata, as Thingamabob (from “Team Cuddly”), sang “Classic,” by MKTO. Neither were guessed by any of the show’s panelists.

“I don’t call myself a super great singer, but I feel that I’m pretty good at delivering a song,” Garcia said. “Throughout my life, I’ve always enjoyed singing. I did musicals in high school, and I was in the choir. And when I was in college, we would throw parties and form a band. There’s a few times I’ve had opportunities to sing for jobs, but it hasn’t been in the forefront as far as my creative career. But I thought it’d be something that would be unexpected for viewers of the show, and maybe I surprised some people!”

Garcia said the experience made him want to sing more and keep his voice in shape, just in case it comes in handy for another acting gig. “I want to treat it as another part of my toolbox and have it at the ready for when a call might come. I mean, I don’t see myself like putting out an album or anything. But it might show up in a project or two.”

The Cyclops costume was not easy to maneuver, Garcia added: “This costume is huge! The head is giant. And then you start getting nervous and realizing how all the parts are just extra weight that affect things. And then I have to be able to move and sing. But the result was really great. I like the way Cyclops looks and it was kind of an exciting character to get to bring to life.”

As for Mailata, the NFL star said he wasn’t expecting a call from “The Masked Singer.”

“When my agent called me, I thought maybe he found out that I’m going to the Pro Bowl,” he said. “And he’s like, ‘I’ve got something better.’ It took me a while to appreciate the offer because I’m so tunnel vision during the season. Football came first. But after talking to my girlfriend and her relentlessly encouraging me to do it, that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I decided to go all in with it. And we traveled out to Cali and started filming right away.”

Mailata said he’s a regular singer at home, in the car, in the show and even at work. “It’s getting to the point where the guys are like, ‘we get it, you can sing!’ I just love singing, whatever song it is.”

He added that the show gave him the desire to explore his singing even more: “Football will always be first,” he said. “It’s what got me to this platform and what’s paying the bills. And after the whole experience being on the ‘Masked Singer,’ it’s something that I am considering now. In the offseason, do I record albums or write songs? Because it is a passion of mine. Do I share that passion a lot more than I have in the past? It’s something that I’m still trying to figure out if I have time to do that.”

For Cyclops, Robin Thicke thought it was Kevin Smith. Ken Jeong named David Batista. Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg guessed Zac Brown and Nicole Scherzinger went with Michael Keaton.

As for Thingamabob, Thicke came closest, picking another NFL player, JJ Watt. McCarthy Wahlberg went with Michael Strahan. Jeong picked Liam Hemsworth. Scherzinger thought it was Dennis Rodman.

This means Firefly moves on to the Season 7 finale.

Jorge Garcia as Cyclops and Jordan Mailata as Thingamabob join the roster of unmasked celebrities that also includes Duff Goldman as McTerrier and Joe Buck, as the Ram.

“The Masked Singer” entered Season 7 with 15 contestants, who have been divided into “The Good, the Bad and the Cuddly.” This season’s costumes include THE GOOD: Ringmaster, Armadillo, McTerrier, Firefly, Frog Prince; THE BAD: Hydra, Ram, Jack in the Box, Cyclops, Queen Cobra; THE CUDDLY: Baby Mammoth, Thingamabob, Lemur, Space Bunny, Miss Teddy.

The Season 7 contestants boast a combined 112 film appearances, 15 Grammy Nominations, eight Emmy Nominations, seven Super Bowl Performances, two Hollywood Walk of Fame Stars and two World Records.

In another change, the show’s panelists don’t appear to be competing for a “Golden Ear” trophy based on their first impressions of each masked performer (which McCarthy has won two times, but Scherzinger won last season) this season.

“I Got You (I Feel Good)” by James Brown was the final showdown song, performed by the Firefly, Cyclops and Thingamabob. Previous songs by Garcia as Cyclops included “My Sacrifice,” by Creed, and “Suspicious Minds,” by Elvis Presley. The panelists had also guessed William Zabka, Danny McBride, Rob Dyrdek, Chris Pratt, John Lithgow, Rob Thomas and Dax Shepard for him.

Mailata as Thingamabob’s previous songs were “Wanted Dead or Alive,” by Bon Jovi, and “Perfect,” by Ed Sheeran. The panelists also guessed Dwayne Johnson, Omar Benson Miller, Jason Momoa, James Hetfield, Chris Jericho, Terrell Owens and Dennis Rodman for him.

Here is the other contestant and their performances on night three:

Firefly, “The Masked Singer”

Firefly (“Team Good”)

Song: “Attention,” by Charlie Puth
Voiceover: “I’ve never been one to shy away from the spotlight. Even as a young firefly, I loved to dress up in my mom’s clothes and entertain my imaginary audience. Then one day, my mom encouraged me to get in front of a real crowd: My neighbors. I even charged them to watch my show. And believe it or not, it was one of those neighbors who got me my first real gig. I’ve always been a shining star. I’m not just fire, I’m fly. Showdown or not, I’m going to light up that stage and let my voice shine, baby!”
Panel guesses: Alicia Keys, Ciara, Keyshia Cole
Previous songs: “Ain’t Nobody,” by Chaka Khan [interrupted by coughing fit in first try]; “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing),” by Michael Jackson
Previous panel guesses: Alicia Keys, Monica, Aisha Tyler, Keisha Cole, Lauryn Hill

Mysterious Object That Survived a Close Encounter With a Black Hole Is Unmasked

A mysterious cloud that somehow survived a close encounter with a supermassive black hole has now been unmasked.

According to a new study of the object, called G2, it’s actually three baby stars, shrouded in a thick cloud of the gas and dust from which they were born. This interpretation offers a very tidy solution to the questions that remained unanswered after G2 skimmed past Sgr A* – the supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way – back in 2014.

“We propose that the monitored dust-enshrouded objects are remnants of a dissolved young stellar cluster whose formation was initiated in the circumnuclear disk,” the researchers wrote in their paper.

G2 was discovered in 2011 (described in a study published in 2012). At that time, it was hurtling towards an event known as perinigricon – the point in its orbit in which it is closest to the black hole.

Astronomers fully expected that the close encounter would result in G2 getting torn apart and slurped up by by Sgr A*, producing some supermassive black hole accretion fireworks.

The fact that nothing happened was later referred to as a “cosmic fizzle”. G2 stretched out and elongated as it drew close to the black hole; then, after perinigricon, it returned to a more compact shape.

Another vexing characteristic of G2 is that it’s very hot, far hotter than a cloud of dust should be. It’s possible that Sgr A*, or other stars, could have heated the object, but it remained the same temperature no matter where it was. This suggested that whatever was heating G2 was coming from within the cloud itself, not external influences.

Both these behaviors, astronomers found, are more consistent with the behavior of a star. A team of researchers last year suggested that the G2 cloud could harbor a hidden star within – the product of a collision between two stars that produced a huge cloud of gas and dust around them.

But the same study also revealed the discovery of four more similar objects in the galactic center, bringing the total number of G objects to six. That’s a lot of merged binary stars.

Now, a team of researchers led by astrophysicist Florian Peißker from the University of Cologne in Germany has come up with an alternative explanation, after conducting a detailed review of 14 years’ worth of observations taken with the Very Large Telescope’s SINFONI instrument.

According to their analysis, G2 should be concealing three stars, at around 1 million years old. That’s very young, for stars; by contrast, the Sun is 4.6 billion years old. The G2 stars are so young that they would still be surrounded by material from the cloud in which they formed.

“That G2 actually consists of three evolving young stars is sensational,” Peißker says, noting that the discovery makes the three stars the youngest stars ever observed around SgrA*.

The galactic center already has an peculiar population of young stars, known as the S-cluster. According to Peißker’s team’s model, the G2 stars could belong to this population.

The stars could have originated in the same stellar nursery, forming a cluster, which has since dissolved, with individual stars breaking away and generating new orbits around Sgr A*.

Even if not associated with the S-cluster, the G2 stars were likely part of a larger cluster of stars at some point. Other dusty objects orbiting Sgr A* could also have been members of this cluster, which would have been disrupted by gravity after moving towards the supermassive black hole from a greater distance.

Because the environment around Sgr A* is not considered conducive to star formation, more work will be needed to discover where G2 and the other G objects might have originated. Astronomers may also be able to use the new findings to understand more about black holes.

“The new results provide unique insights into how black holes work,” Peißker says.

“We can use the environment of SgrA* as a blueprint to learn more about the evolution and processes of other galaxies in completely different corners of our Universe.”

The research has been published in The Astrophysical Journal.

‘The Masked Singer’ Season 6 Episode 8: Beach Ball is Unmasked

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched “The Masked Singer” Season 6, Episode 8, “Giving Thanks,” which aired November 3 on Fox.

Honey Boo Boo, we hardly knew you. Reality TV mother and daughter stars June Edith “Mama June” Shannon and Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson joined “Masked Singer” on Wednesday night as new Wild Card contestants the Beach Ball, but were quickly unmasked at the end of the eighth episode of Season 6, “Giving Thanks.” (Episode 7, which aired last week, was a special best-of clip show without performances or an elimination from this season’s contestants.)

Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg thought it was Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jenni “JWoww” Farley. Ken Jeong went with Kim and Khloe Kardashian. Nicole Scherzinger guessed Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo. Robin Thicke said it was Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs. Guest panelist Joel McHale also went with Snooki and JWoww.

Shannon and Thompson as the Beach Ball sang “Party in the USA,” by Miley Cyrus.

“Coming in as the wild card definitely makes sense because my whole life has kind of been wild,” Thompson said in the show’s voiceover. “I was thrown into the game at a very young age and in the spotlight for a very long time. I had famous recipes and I even had a hit single that I recorded in just one take. And best of all, I’ve had my biggest supporter right by my side. Until recently, when both of us went our separate ways. I would call out for them, and they just weren’t there. When they found out I was doing the show, we reconnected. The greatest thing is I know my biggest supporter will always have my back. So whatever happens tonight, I’m truly thankful for that.”

“Mama June” Shannon and Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson (Beach Ball) joined Rob Schneider (Hamster), Ruth Pointer (Cupcake), Larry the Cable Guy (Baby), Tyga (Dalmatian), Toni Braxton (Pufferfish), Vivica A. Fox (Mother Nature) and Dwight Howard (Octopus) as the next celebrity to be unmasked on Season 6 of “The Masked Singer.”

“It was definitely very hot,” Thompson said. “We had a lot of things going on. We had to move the mouth, make sure we didn’t roll off the stage, it was a lot.”

“The Masked Singer” entered Season 6 with the return of a studio audience for the first time since the pandemic began. This season’s costumes include Baby, Banana Split, Beach Ball, Bull, Caterpillar, Cupcake, Dalmatian, Hamster, Jester, Mallard, Mother Nature, Octopus, Pepper, Pufferfish, Queen of Hearts and Skunk.

The Season 6 contestants boast a combined 85 Grammy Nominations and 27 wins, three Academy Award nominations, 12 Emmy Nominations, 12 Razzie Award Nominations, two Super Bowl appearances and two Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The show’s panelists will once again compete for a “Golden Ear” trophy based on their first impressions of each masked performer (which McCarthy has won the last two seasons). Jeong went into episode eight with a point, ahead of everyone else.

As for Beach Ball, Thicke’s first impression was Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs; McCarthy Wahlberg’s initial choice was Kim Zolciak and Erika Jayne. Jeong picked Kim and Khloe Kardashian. Scherzinger gave Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo for her first impression. No one gained a point.

Also new this season, a “Take It Off” buzzer will allow the show’s panelists to prematurely demand a celebrity remove their mask, if they’re convinced they know who it is. They’ll get two extra points toward the Golden Ear tally if they’re right. If they’re wrong, they’ll be “severely punished.”

This week, McCarthy Wahlberg almost pressed the button for Caterpillar, and then stopped herself.

Here were the other contestants and their performances:

I’ve had scrutiny over stuff a family member has said. But no matter how much you disagree, you still have to get together at the end of the day and have a good ol’ supper together. And always remember that there’s probably always more things that we’re alike than we’re different. This next song is from someone I basically consider family, Luke Bryan. Years ago he asked me to get on stage and sing this song. But one problem: I didn’t know the words. I just couldn’t do it. And I have regretted that my whole life. So tonight is my redemption.”

But I had a lot of apprehension, because I wasn’t sure they wanted to get to know the real me. To my surprise, they accepted me with open arms. So you just never know how a simple phone call can change your life. The thing I’m most thankful now is good air conditioning on stage because I’m going to need it. I’m really thankful for my experiences, and hopefully I’ve made it a little easier for others to follow. I’m doing this show to push myself. After the last performance, I wanted to pivot a little. I changed the song last minute, so it’s definitely a risk. My rehearsal was terrible. I said I wanted to be challenged, so here I am. And hopefully I can pull it off.”

Drunk ‘Karen’ attacks unmasked restaurant worker with cleaning spray and demands to see vaccine card

‘I’m vaccinated, b****!’ ‘Karen’ attacks California restaurant worker with cleaning spray for not wearing a mask and demands to see her vaccine card before hitting another staff member

  • A nearly seven minute-long video showed a woman in a Market Broiler restaurant in California on Monday night causing chaos over employees not wearing masks
  • Dubbed ‘Karen’ the woman became increasingly physical as she demanded to see the restaurant manager’s vaccine card
  • She then grabbed a bottle of cleaning spray off the counter and sprayed it in the workers face after telling her ‘you don’t f***ing deserve your f***ing job’
  • Commenters on social media joked that the vaccine made Karen crazy and she had ‘too many coronitas’

This is the moment an allegedly drunk woman attacks a California restaurant worker for not wearing a mask before hitting another who tried to intervene.

The unnamed woman, branded a ‘Karen’ after the cellphone footage went viral, was filmed pushing, throwing things at and spraying cleaning spray at a female employee at Market Broiler in Huntington Beach, California.

Despite not wearing a mask herself, the Karen attacks the restaurant supervisor, demanding to see her vaccination card and bragging that she herself didn’t need to wear one because ‘I’m vaccinated b****!’

The nearly seven minute-long video begins with the already hysterical customer screaming in the face of the staff member that she  ‘doesn’t know what it feels like’ to be discriminated against’.

Karen then hit another staff member and grappled with her after she tried to intervene

A male staff member attempts to intervene but the woman walked round the counter, grabbed a handful of mints from the counter and threw them at the woman.

Karen seemed to be intoxicated as she slurred her words and stumbled around the restaurant, telling the woman ‘you don’t f***ing deserve your f***ing job.’

‘She then asked the unmasked worker if she’s been vaccinated, shouting at her that she ‘has a mandate and a responsibility to have your f***ing mask on’.

Karen repeatedly demanded to see the woman’s vaccine card as she stomped around the restaurant pointing at the woman.

Karen demanded that the supervisor wear a mask and when no one responded to her commands, Karen grabbed a bottle of cleaning spray off the counter and sprayed it in the worker’s face.

One commenter on social media questioned whether the vaccine made the Karen crazy as she was seen in the video demanding to see the restaurant manager’s vaccine card

She keeps spraying as a man ran in between the two women. ‘I don’t need a mask! I’m vaccinated b****!’ she yelled.

Other staff and diners intervened and she was seen grappling with a young member of staff who tried to get her to leave.

She was even observed hitting the woman before others stepped in.

A female diner also stepped in to try and remove the Karen who was making a scene.

She attempted to hold her hands and tell her not to worry about the employees.

This upset Karen even more and she said: ‘Let’s not be worried about the white people.’

She then finally left the restaurant and the diners cheered.

CDC: Unvaccinated, unmasked teacher caused community-wide outbreak in California

An unvaccinated elementary school teacher in California infected more than half of her students with COVID-19, ultimately resulting in a community-wide outbreak in Marin County, a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found.

Why it matters: The outbreak, which took place in May, highlights the stakes surrounding a debate across the U.S. among school districts considering implementing stricter measures to curb the spread of the virus, like universal masking in schools.

Details: The teacher who caused the outbreak continued to show up at school for two days while experiencing symptoms before ultimately receiving a test.

  • The school in question requires teachers and students to wear masks indoors. But the teacher read to her students unmasked as she exhibited nasal congestion and fatigue.
  • The teacher tested positive for the virus on May 21, and 12 of her 22 students later tested positive, per the report.

The big picture: Thousands of students were forced to quarantine or isolate due to possible exposure almost immediately after schools reopened in August. Districts have had to temporarily close schools or suspend in-person instruction because of outbreaks.

What they’re saying: The outbreakhighlights the importance of vaccinating school staff members who are in close indoor contact with children ineligible for vaccination as schools reopen,” the report read.

Unvaccinated, unmasked teacher spreads Covid-19 to elementary school students, CDC reports

An unvaccinated teacher who showed up to her elementary school classroom in Marin County, California, while experiencing symptoms such as “cough, subjective fever, and headache” ended up infecting half of her students with Covid-19 as well as some of their family members, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released Friday.

Officials from the Marin County Department of Public Health initiated an investigation into the classroom outbreak on May 26, three days after the teacher reported testing positive for Covid-19. The teacher, who initially attributed symptoms to allergies, was one of only two staff members that had not been vaccinated at the elementary school.

Among the teacher’s 24 students, 22 who were ineligible for vaccination because of age were tested. Twelve tested positive for the virus, according to the report, written by county health officials and experts at the University of California’s Berkeley, Davis and Santa Cruz campuses.

Children under 12 are ineligible for vaccination, meaning that their safety is dependent on others adults to get vaccinated to minimize exposure to the virus, according to the CDC.

Experts concluded that the attack rate in the affected classroom was 50 percent, but the students seating closest to the teacher’s desk faced an increased risk of infection. The attack rate in the two rows seated closest to the teacher’s desk was 80 percent, the CDC reported.

A majority of the students sitting in the first two rows of the classroom contracted the virus, while a minority of those sitting at the back of the class were infected. The teacher occasionally read aloud to students while unmasked, despite school requirements to mask while indoors, according to the report.

Four students from other classrooms also tested positive to Covid-19. They were all siblings of three students in the unvaccinated teacher’s classroom, “and exposure was assumed to have occurred in their respective homes,” the CDC reported.

This classroom seating chart shows the proximity of a Marin County teacher, to students who later tested positive for Covid.Centers for Disease Control

Four parents of children at the school were later infected in the outbreak, according to the report. Of the infected parents, only one was unvaccinated. The vaccinated experienced symptoms including fever, chills, cough, headache and loss of smell.

Additionally, six students from a different grade also tested positive for Covid-19 after one student hosted a sleepover with two other students from the same class, the CDC reported. All students infected in this classroom were also ineligible for vaccination due to age.

Certain specimen evidence gathered throughout the investigation suggests “that infections occurring in the two grades likely were part of the same outbreak.”

A total of 26 elementary school students and their contacts got infected following exposure to the unvaccinated teacher. At least 18 of them contracted the delta variant, the CDC concluded.

“The outbreak’s attack rate highlights the Delta variant’s increased transmissibility and potential for rapid spread, especially in unvaccinated populations such as schoolchildren too young for vaccination,” the report reads.

Experts also concluded that the outbreak’s impact on the broader community may have been limited thanks to Marin County’s high vaccination rate, one of the best in California. At the time of the outbreak, 72 percent of eligible people had been fully vaccinated in the city where the school is located, according to the report.

However, new evidence of the delta variant’s “high transmissibility, even among fully vaccinated persons, supports recommendations for universal masking in schools. … Proper masking, routine testing, ventilation, and staying home while symptomatic are important to ensure safe school instruction,” the CDC said.
