Athena one of three new champs crowned on ROH Final Battle undercard

The ROH Final Battle PPV was a newsworthy show with several title changes. Claudio Castagnoli regained the ROH World Championship from Chris Jericho in the main event. The Briscoes became 13-time ROH tag champs by beating FTR. There were also three new champions crowned on the undercard.

Athena conquered Mercedes Martinez to win the ROH Women’s World Championship. The Fallen Goddess tried to manipulate Martinez. It didn’t work at first, but Athena made sure she found success. Athena ripped off the turnbuckle pad in a fit of frustration. She grabbed the referee knowing Martinez would step in. Athena tried to shove Martinez into the exposed steel, but the OG Badass stopped short. Athena went to a backup plan to dropkick Martinez into the corner. Martinez’s head collided into the metal. Athena closed with the O-Face flying stunner for victory.

Prince Nana led the Embassy into gold by assisting Brian Cage, Kaun, and Toa Liona in victory. Dalton Castle & The Boys entered holding the ROH World Six-Man Championship, and they used peacock power for flashy offense. The Embassy’s muscle game took over in the end. Nana caused a timely distraction, and Liona launched Boy (Brent Tate) into Castle. The Gates of Agony lifted Tate into the air for a powerbomb from Cage to win the titles.

Wheeler Yuta made the Blackpool Combat Club proud by winning the ROH Pure Championship from nemesis Daniel Garcia. The sports entertainer was in charge for much of the match. Garcia outsmarted Yuta to use all three rope-breaks early. The professional wrestler rallied down the stretch for a piledriver. When that didn’t keep Garcia down, Yuta unloaded hammering elbows until Gracia was knocked out.

In other championship action, Samoa Joe took care of business to retain the ROH World Television Championship. The King of Television finished Juice Robinson with a Musclebuster.

Jake Paul vs. Anderson Silva fight results: Live boxing updates, scorecard, start time, undercard, Showtime PP

Jake Paul is set for the stiffest test of his young boxing career when he faces Anderson Silva on Saturday night. The social media star and the UFC legend meet in the main event of a Showtime pay-per-view event from Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

Paul is 5-0 as a professional boxer and three of his previous wins have come over UFC veterans, knocking out Ben Askren and then beating former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley by decision and knockout in the rematch. Silva also holds a 3-1 boxing record, which includes a notable win over former middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Also of note on the card, former NFL running back Le’Veon Bell will face former UFC star Uriah Hall and social media personality Dr. Mike Varshavski will battle boxer and UFC veteran Chris Avila.

Naoya Inoue vs. Nonito Donaire 2: Fight prediction, undercard, start time, odds, preview, expert pick

One of the best fights in the last few years is set for its second chapter. Two of the best bantamweights of this era will throw down in Japan on Tuesday when unified champion Naoya Inoue takes on WBC titleholder Nonito Donaire at the Saitama Arena (5 a.m. ET, ESPN+). The pair first met in 2019 in a bout hailed as the best of the year to conclude the World Boxing Super Series tournament in the 118-pound division.

Donaire (42-6, 28 KO) entered the tournament thought by many to be well past his prime and having lost bouts to Jessie Magdaleno and Carl Frampton in two of his last three. While Donaire won his first two fights in the WBSS tournament, he did not enter the finals with Inoue having calmed many concerns over his current form. The first round saw him defeat Ryan Burnett after Burnett suffered a back injury just four rounds into the fight and the semifinal bout came against Stephon Young who was a late replacement for Zolani Tete.

But, when given his shot at Inoue, one of the best fighters in the world, Donaire showed he still held many of the skills that saw him win 30 consecutive fights from 2001 to 2012, a stretch where he won world titles at flyweight, super flyweight, bantamweight and super bantamweight. In his 35th pro fight, Donaire also added a world title at featherweight to his already impressive collection.

“I went in there with so many vulnerabilities and not really caring about anything else but just brawling,” Donaire said in an interview with Yahoo Sports. “This time, I’m bringing everything I am, from a guy with speed, a guy who can counter, a guy who can think and, yeah, a guy who can brawl. I’m going to bring everything that’s in my skill set to the fight this time instead of just going out and brawling.”

The speed of Inoue (22-0, 19 KO) was a major factor in the bout with Donaire, but Donaire never backed down and showcased a brutal right hand in addition to his trademark left hook. Both men would hurt the other throughout the battle before Inoue was able to pull away late, including with a knockdown on a body shot in Round 11. Inoue would ultimately win the fight by scores of 114-113, 116-111, and 117-109, but Donaire’s performance showed he had plenty left to offer inside the ring.

Donaire would be out of the ring until 2021 when he knocked out Nordine Oubaali in the fourth round to capture the WBC title and then retained the belt with another fourth-round knockout, this time over Reymart Gaballo.

Inoue’s nickname “The Monster” is apt, considering his crushing power that has put down all but three of his career opponents. On his rise to the point of being one of the sport’s pound-for-pound elite, Inoue has collected world titles at junior flyweight, junior bantamweight and bantamweight.

Since his win over Donaire, Inoue has remained perfect, scoring knockouts of Jason Moloney, Michael Dasmarinas and Aran Dipaen.

Now, he’s set for a rematch with his toughest opponent to date as well as the biggest name fighter he’s ever faced.

The rest of the undercard fills out with more matchups in the lower weight classes. Takuma Inoue, Naoya’s younger brother, is back in a super bantamweight contest when he takes on Gakuya Furuhashi. Takuma Inoue previously held the interim WBC super bantamweight title in 2019 before suffering his lone pro defeat to Oubaali when he challenged for the full title. He holds a 15-1 record with just three knockouts.

Below is the rest of the fight card in Japan with the latest odds from Caesars Sportsbook before getting to a prediction and pick on the main event.

Inoue vs. Donaire card, odds

Naoya Inoue (c) -550

Nonito Donaire (c) +400

WBA, IBF and WBC bantamweight titles

Takuma Inoue

Gakuya Furuhashi

Super bantamweight

Andy Hiraoka

Shun Akaiwa

Lightweight

Prediction

It’s been a joy to watch Donaire, a true legend and a beloved fighter, resurrect his career as a legitimate top-tier fighter. However, at 39-years old, Donaire is at an age where his body will often not be able to pull off what has become instinct over his long and storied career. Inoue has already proven he has the ability to beat Donaire, albeit in a thrilling fight, and he’s still a 29-year-old who has taken a very limited amount of dents over his time in the ring.

It would seem reasonable to think that Inoue will be able to repeat what he accomplished the first time around and maybe without as much trouble. Expect Donaire to be game and to give everything he has. It’s just that everything Donaire has might not be enough. Pick: Naoya Inoue via TKO10

Tyson Fury vs. Dillian Whyte fight prediction, odds, undercard, preview, start time, live stream, expert pick

In what he claims will be the final fight of his 14-year career, Tyson Fury will defend his WBC and lineal heavyweight titles on Saturday against interim champion Dillian Whyte in London.

Few, of course, actually believe the 33-year-old Fury (31-0-1, 22 KOs) will walk away for good, regardless of the outcome. Still, the event is big enough (ESPN+ PPV, 2 p.m. ET) to warrant the attention of the entire sporting world as the two hulking heavyweights square off in their home country in front of a U.K. record crowd of 94,000 at Wembley Stadium.

The fight will mark the first time Fury is fighting anyone else other than former champion Deontay Wilder since 2019. It will also mark the first time Fury returns to fight in the U.K. since a 2018 win over Francesco Pianeta in Northern Ireland.

“Dillian Whyte is a good fighter,” Fury said at Wednesday’s final press conference. “He is a good, strong, solid man. He’s big, he’s strong [and] he’s tough. He’s game, he’s got good power. He has knocked out a lot of men. He has had a good learning career, as well. He’s got a lot of experience in the fight game. He’s definitely a man that needs a lot of respect.

“That’s why I’ve given all this training camp we’ve had. I’ve had everything I can possibly do to train for this. I’ve haven’t left any stones unturned. I’ve trained as hard for Dillian as I have for Wilder or [Wladimir] Klitschko.”

Fury had hope to be fighting unified champion Oleksandr Usyk to open 2022 in a four-belt undisputed title bout, but both Whyte (28-2, 19 KOs) and former champion Anthony Joshua, who’s expected to rematch Usyk this summer, both turned down step-aside money to clear the way.

Instead, the 34-year-old Whyte is expected to bring a sturdy challenge to the 6-foot-9 Fury thanks to his 6-foot-4 frame, durability and punching power. Whyte, who was born in Jamaica before emigrating to England, is 12-1 since a 2015 knockout loss to Joshua and avenged the one defeat — a devastating 2020 knockout at the hands of Alexander Povetkin — by finishing him in their rematch five months later.

Whyte has been a sparring partner of Fury in the past and gained the champion’s respect throughout a series of difficult victories on the way up the ladder to title contention against the likes of Dereck Chisora (twice), Robert Helenius, Lucas Browne, Oscar Rivas, Mariusz Wach and former champion Joseph Parker.

“[Whyte] is a good fighting man. The fans are in for a real treat,” Fury said. “I know Dillian. I know him personally, and he knows me. And we’re going to rock n’ roll on fight night. We’re ready to throw down and treat us all to a hell of a barnstorm.”

Whyte has been known for his often cantankerous ways in the past, which have included storming out of press conferences while protesting his purse. He pulled a similar stunt on Feb. 28 by no-showing the kickoff press conference because he was upset at not getting a percentage of the PPV sales as part of his deal.

The purses for this superfight are huge as Fury is expected to make $29.5 million opposite a career-best $7.4 million for Whyte. The winner of the fight will also make an additional $4.1 million, as negotiated by both fighters.

“There was no strategy [in skipping the press conference,]” Whyte said. “There are two sides to his story. You only hear one side of the story because one side says a lot of things. Because I didn’t say anything, everyone was saying ‘you’re scared’ and ‘you’re hiding.’ I ain’t scared of shit. I ain’t hiding from shit. Stuff needed to get done.

“[The fight] means everything. It’s massive. It’s a moment I’ve been waiting for. It’s a big fight. Like Tyson said, we didn’t expect to be here. But I’m here, but I’ve taken risks time and time again. I’ve had a couple slipups along the way, but I’m here and I’m ready to go. You won’t hear any bullshit from me. I’m ready to go.”

Whyte told reporters he needs to be adaptable in order to defeat the slick Fury, who will hold advantages of five inches in height and another seven inches in reach.

“I’m going to make smart decisions, when I need to do what and how I need to do it, and how I need to approach what I’m doing,” Whyte said. “So that’s it. There’s no strategy here. That’s it. I just need to go in there and do my thing.”

The undercard does not fill out with a ton of name value, but Tommy Fury does make his return to the ring against Daniel Bocianski at light heavyweight. The half-brother of Tyson is 7-0 with four knockouts so far in his young career. At just 22-years old, Tommy Fury is just beginning his journey. He was hopeful to face social media star Jake Paul in a main event last December, but he suffered an injury and was forced to withdraw. Now he faces Bocianski, a fighter from Poland with a 10-1 record but just two stoppages on his resume.

Prediction

Whether he gets knocked out trying or eventually delivers the boom himself, Whyte has a decorated history against elite competition of getting inside and turning things into a fight. Given Fury’s pre-fight comments, it’s an inevitability he appears to accept, which is why his predictions have consistently been a knockout.

In many ways, Fury’s third fight against Wilder last fall was the perfect prerequisite for the challenge Whyte brings to the table. Although he entered following an 18-month layoff due to the pandemic and was forced to get up off the canvas twice in a wild Round 4, Fury dug in and stood his ground well against a bigger puncher en route to a violent 11th-round finish.

The performance from Fury was all part of his multi-year transition following his first fight against Wilder in 2018 when he surprisingly cut ties with trainer Ben Davison in favor of the more offensive minded SugarHill Steward, a disciple of his late uncle and Hall of Fame trainer Emmanuel Steward of Kronk Gym in Detroit. Fury also took his father John’s advice to heart of bulking up in weight as he put on more than 20 pounds between the first and third Wilder bouts.

The main difference for Fury in preparing for Whyte, as opposed to Wilder, is that Whyte is far less crude in terms of the technique he uses to set up his power shots. Because of that, Fury will need to properly mix his two styles as both boxer and puncher. And if his public workout this week was any indication, in which he worked out from southpaw for the entirety, it’s likely “The Gypsy King” has a few wrinkles up his sleeve to keep Whyte guessing.

In the end, Whyte pushes the pace consistently enough to where it’s either him or you that gets stopped. While that sort of challenge brings danger to Fury, it’s not something he hasn’t dealt with and the gap between them in terms of hand speed and technique should be enough for Fury to create a buffer for his power shots to get off cleanly.

Deron Williams edges past Frank Gore in wild celebrity fight on Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley 2 undercard

The idea of watching two elite athletes from different sports facing off in a boxing ring will always carry a certain strange appeal. That was the case heading into the four-round exhibition clash between former NBA star Deron Williams and the NFL’s third all-time leading rusher Frank Gore on the undercard of the rematch between Jake Paul and Tyron Woodley. In the end, Williams was able to get the split decision victory in a rare exhibition that had scoring from ringside judges.

Williams entered the ring with a massive advantage in height and reach and put more than a decade of experience training in boxing gyms to work early, using a long jab to keep Gore from getting in range. In the opening round, that jab allowed Williams to follow with a sharp right hand that buzzed Gore.

Gore came back in the second round, rocking Williams with a double jab followed by a winging overhand right. Williams responded with a wild moment where he tried to swarm Gore before shoving him backward through the ropes and leading Gore to need to be checked by a doctor. When the action resumed, Gore returned the favor, trying to throw Williams through the ropes on the opposite side of the ring.

After a warning from the referee, the fight settled into something resembling more of a boxing contest. Williams took over the fight in the third and fourth round, showing more endurance as Gore clearly fatigued. Still, Gore found moments to land big right hand bombs even as Williams was pouring on strikes.

“I always was a physical point guard. I never shied away from contact, and I showed that today. People think basketball players are soft, but I never was one. That’s what I was looking to accomplish here today,” Williams said. “Maybe I gained some new fans, but I’m just glad I made my team happy and my family proud. My mom was nervous. She didn’t want to watch and see her son beaten up, so I hope she was proud of that.”

Williams had the biggest moment of the fight in Round 3, landing a flurry of punches as Gore was pinned in the corner. The referee stepped in and issued a standing eight count to Gore, telling the former NFL Pro Bowler that he was being held up by the ropes and giving Williams a 10-8 round.

At the conclusion of the four rounds, the judges turned in scores of 38-37, 37-38 and 40-35, giving Williams the split decision victory.

After the fight, Williams said he was officially “one and done” as a boxer.

“I’m gonna go sit my old dumb ass down somewhere and let these professionals do this shit,” Williams said. “Honestly, I probably looked terrible out there. … As soon as you come out here and start getting touched, all your training goes out the window.”
