College basketball rankings: UCLA joins top five of AP Top 25, FAU in poll for first time in school history

A wild week in college basketball produced significant changes across the latest AP Top 25 poll released on Monday with UCLA moving up to No. 5 and Xavier and Virginia entering the top 10. The Bruins bumped up two spots from No. 7 last week after both Tennessee and UConn — ranked No. 4 and No. 5 last week — stumbled.

UCLA meanwhile handled business at home vs. Utah and Colorado on the week to keep its perfect Pac-12 record intact as its lead in the league standings held at one game.

The top of the poll remained the same as it did last week with Houston retaining its spot at No. 1 and Kansas, Purdue and Alabama all holding on to its spots at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. The Cougars earned the same number of first-place votes as last week (34) while Kansas received one more (23). Purdue received the final three.

Xavier’s rise up four spots to No. 8 this week marked the program’s first top-10 ranking since the 2017-18 season when it climbed as high as No. 3 under then-coach Chris Mack. First-year coach Sean Miller has led the Musketeers to a 15-3 overall record and a 7-0 mark in the Big East which is its best start in league play since joining the league. Xavier’s hot start has made such an impression that Marquette — which beat UConn earlier in the week then lost to Xavier on Sunday — still climbed in the poll five spots up to No. 20.

Elsewhere in the rankings, FAU entered the rankings at No. 24, its first time in the AP poll in program history after a 16-1 start to the season. The Owls’ rise coincided with Duke’s dip out of the rankings for the first time since the 2020-21 season following its loss over the weekend to ACC-leading Clemson.

AP Top 25

The top 25 teams in The Associated Press’ college basketball poll, with first-place votes in parentheses, records through Sunday, total points based on 25 points for a first-place vote through one point for a 25th-place vote and last week’s ranking:

Others receiving votesNC State 111, Saint Mary’s 106, Arizona St 79, New Mexico 67, Illinois 61, San Diego State 44, Michigan State 29, Duke 24, Wisconsin 14, Creighton 9, Kent State 8, Boise State 6, Texas A&M 5, Ohio State 3, Missouri 3, Iowa 2, VCU 2, North Carolina 1.

College football Week 12: USC defeats UCLA; Oregon leading Utah

Week 12 of the college football season has featured several exciting matchups, and there’s still more where that came from as things wind down Saturday evening.

Currently, No. 10 Utah is attempting to beat No. 12 Oregon for the third time in the last two seasons in a rematch of last year’s Pac-12 Championship Game.

Earlier, Oklahoma got revenge against No. 22 Oklahoma State in the Bedlam Series after losing to its arch-rival last season, and No. 7 USC outlasted crosstown rival No. 16 UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

Elsewhere, No. 4 TCU kicked a game-winning field goal against Baylor as time expired to stay unbeaten. In the Big Ten, No. 3 Michigan also rallied to beat Illinois in the final seconds and No. 2 Ohio State narrowly came away with a win over Maryland. No. 9 Clemson throttled Miami and Texas dismantled Kansas on the road.

Here are the top plays from Saturday’s slate!

No. 10 Utah at No. 12 Oregon

Ducks go up

Oregon was first on the board when Mar’Keise Irving capped off a 10-play, 79-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run to open the game.

Then, QB Bo Nix connected with Biletnikoff Award hopeful Troy Franklin to extend the Ducks’ lead.

Stay tuned for updates!

No. 7 USC 48, No. 16 UCLA 45

Bruins strike first

UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson took it in for the Bruins himself, giving the home team the early lead.

Then, he showed off his arm strength for UCLA’s second first-quarter touchdown, a 30-yard bomb.

UCLA’s Dorian Thompson-Robinson finds Michael Ezeike for a 30-yard touchdown to take a 14-0 lead over USC.

Closing the gap

USC gained some momentum in the second quarter, pulling within three points to keep the Bruins close.

Riding the wave

USC QB Caleb Williams found a rhythm ahead of the break with one big throw after another. That helped set up another Trojans touchdown to keep the Bruins within arm’s reach as halftime approached.

New leader

USC took its first lead of the game in the third quarter when Williams found Jordan Addison for a 35-yard TD.

All-out effort

There were six more touchdowns exchanged between both teams, as this one came down to the wire. In the end, the Trojans sealed the deal with a late-minute interception as UCLA charged downfield.

Oklahoma 28, No. 22 Oklahoma State 13

In the dust

Drake Stoops burned the man covering him and made a diving grab at the 1-yard line to set up Oklahoma for the game’s first score.

Man of the hour

Sooners QB Dillon Gabriel tossed two more touchdowns in the first quarter to put Oklahoma up 28-0, and Oklahoma State was never able to find its footing.

Texas 55, Kansas 14

Order up

Bijan Robinson plowed his way into the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown run to get Texas on the board.

Then, the Longhorns’ star running back notched his second touchdown of the game, running untouched into the end zone to make it 14-0.

Star power

Bijan Robinson completed the hat trick by running in for a 1-yard score as time expired in the first half.

Then, he Longhorns’ standout broke a pair of tackles, stutter-stepped and turned on the jets for a 32-yard touchdown run, good for his fourth score of the game as Texas ran away with the win.

No. 2 Ohio State 43, Maryland 30

Highlight reel

Ohio State’s star receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. made the tough catch along the sideline while getting interfered with for a 30-yard gain, which helped the Buckeyes take a 7-0 lead on the opening drive.

Terps on top at the half

Taulia Tagovailoa found CJ Dippre in the back of the end zone to give Maryland a 13-10 lead.

Blocked punt

After struggling to move the ball following its opening drive in the first half, Ohio State got things rolling in the second half by blocking a punt in Maryland territory. It was Lathan Ransom’s second straight game with a punt block. Two plays later, Ohio State scored to go up 17-13.

Finding their groove

With multiple injuries at running back, Ohio State turned to Dallan Hayden, who scored his second touchdown to extend the lead to 27-13.

Taulia time

Maryland’s QB kept the ball himself and ran it in for the TD. The deficit was cut to 27-21 following a successful two-point conversion.

Three for the backup RB

Hayden added a third touchdown right after Maryland’s score that briefly put the Buckeyes up by 12. The Terps, however, blocked the PAT and ran it all the way back for two points to make it a 10-point game.

Shades of his brother

Tagovailoa razzled and dazzled on fourth-and-goal, scrambling all the way to the sideline before throwing a touchdown to cut Ohio State’s lead to 33-30, but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback.

No. 9 Clemson 40, Miami (FL) 10

Can’t tackle DJ

DJ Uigalelei powered his way into the end zone to extend Clemson’s lead to 14-0 early on.

Wide open

Clemson had its way with Miami, as Luke Price got wide open on the play-action pass at the goal line to make it 24-0 en route to an easy win at home.

No. 4 TCU 29, Baylor 28

Booming early

Qualan Jones capped off Baylor’s opening drive by punching the ball into the end zone on a 10-yard scamper.

Qualan Jones couldn’t be stopped as his 10-yard rushing score early in the first quarter gave Baylor a 7-0 lead over TCU.

Ground game strong

TCU QB Max Duggan has made a name for himself all season for the plays he’s made with his arm. However, it was his legs that got the Horned Frogs on the board to even up the game late in the first quarter.

Max Duggan runs it in for a 7-yard game-tying TD

Max Duggan ran it in himself to tie the game for TCU against Baylor.

Battling

Things didn’t stay tied for long, however, as Kelsey Johnson took the reverse and ran up field for a 2-yard touchdown to give Baylor the lead back.

Right after Baylor scored its second touchdown of the game, Duggan connected with Taye Barber for a near-80-yard reception on the opening plan of the ensuing drive that set up Kendre Miller to run for a touchdown a few plays later.

INT frenzy

Baylor tried to get a touchdown in right before halftime. But TCU defensive back Bud Clark had other plans, picking off a pass in the end zone to keep the game tied going into halftime.

Then, Baylor got an interception of its own after TCU’s star QB tried to go for the home run ball to break a 14-14 tie. Instead, the Bears ended up with the ball.

TCU on top

The Horned Frogs took the lead for the first time in the game when Duggan threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Gunnar Henderson, who was wide-open coming out of the backfield.

Bears back on top

After running one in earlier, Johnson made the tough grab at the goal line to give the Bears the lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Then, Baylor RB Richard Reese pounded one into the end zone on for a 1-yard touchdown to extend Baylor’s lead, 28-20.

Mad scramble to kick for the win!

Emari Demercado ran into the end zone with ease for the 3-yard score to cut Baylor’s lead to 28-26 with just over two minutes remaining, but TCU wasn’t able to tie the game due to a failed 2-point conversion.

TCU tested its kicker by calling a running play on third-and-long with just 22 seconds left. However, Griffin Kell remained cool, calm and collected to nail the field goal as time expired to give the Horned Frogs the win and keep them unbeaten.

No. 3 Michigan 19, Illinois 17

Hot start

Michigan running back and Heisman hopeful Blake Corum juked multiple defenders on the game’s opening play for a 35-yard gain before scoring later in the drive to put the Wolverines up 7-0.

Injury watch

As Michigan aimed to score its second touchdown of the game, Corum fumbled, grabbing at his left knee and remaining on the turf for a few moments afterward before walking off the field under his own power.

Corum was cleared to return after undergoing tests on his left knee during halftime. He reentered the game on Michigan’s second play from scrimmage in the second half and carried the ball for a 5-yard gain.

That was Corum’s only touch in the second half, however, leaving his status for next week’s meeting with Ohio State (Saturday, 12 p.m. ET, FOX) in question.

Evening it up

Illinois finally got into the end zone midway through the third quarter when Chase Brown broke through the pile for an 8-yard score to make it a 10-10 game. Then, Brown burst open for a 37-yard touchdown run that put Illinois up 17-10 and gave Michigan its first fourth-quarter deficit of the season.

Jake Moody nailed a 35-yard field goal to complete the comeback for Michigan.

BEST OF THE REST:

Upset alert!

Vanderbilt pulled off a 31-24 upset over Florida on Saturday, making it just the second time in 32 games the Commodores have beaten the Gators.

No. 1 recruit making top plays

In shades of his college coach, Travis Hunter was scoring touchdowns on both sides of the ball for Jackson State. The freshman had a pick-six before making an impressive touchdown catch.

USC vs. UCLA score: Live game updates, college football scores, NCAA top 25 highlights today

No. 7 USC and No. 16 UCLA traded barbs in the first half of their pivotal rivalry showdown as the Bruins made it to the locker with a 21-20 lead. If the Trojans can rally for a win on the road, they will clinch a spot in the Pac-12 title game. Even after an upset loss to Arizona last week, UCLA still has a shot at making the conference championship game as well, and the Bruins came out swinging on their senior night.

Redshirt senior quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson accounted for each of UCLA’s three touchdowns in the first half as he ran for two and passed for another. But when the Bruins had opportunities to extend their lead late in the half, Thompson-Robinson threw interceptions on consecutive possessions. USC kicker Denis Lynch drilled a 49-yarder on the final play of the first half after starting 1 of 3 in the game to send USC into the half with momentum.

The stakes are always high when the Bruins and Trojans meet for their late-season crosstown rivalry, if for no other reason than bragging rights. But the magnitude of this matchup is particularly significant this time as the Trojans and Bruins remain in the Pac-12 title hunt. If USC wins, it will not only lock up a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game but also keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive. Syracuse vs. Clemson, Texas vs. Oklahoma State, UCLA vs. Oregon and more

This week may not have an epic game like last week’s Tennessee vs. Alabama tilt proved to be, but there are still five ranked vs. ranked games and a bunch of others that are very interesting for a variety of reasons.

Multiple undefeated teams have already gone down today and more could be in trouble.

Bo Nix and No. 10 Oregon scored at will against No. 9 UCLA, which entered the day 6-0. The Ducks emphatically ended the Bruins’ perfect start to the season with a 45-30 win at home.

Another team that started the day unbeaten, No. 7 Ole Miss, fell 45-20 to unranked LSU. It was a dominant performance for the Tigers, who trailed 17-3 early before kicking into high gear the rest of the way though.

In an earlier marquee matchup, No. 5 Clemson got a serious scare from No. 14 Syracuse (also previously unbeaten), which led in the fourth quarter before the Tigers took control and eked out a 27-21 win.

There are numerous other games with major division, conference and even College Football Playoff implications. We’re past the halfway point of the season, so each week gets more important.

This is one of two massive games in the Big 12 this weekend. While TCU and Kansas State are undefeated in conference play, both Texas and Oklahoma State have just one Big 12 loss apiece. Texas, after a 2-2 start, has won three straight games and has had star quarterback Quinn Ewers back in the lineup in its last two outings. Oklahoma State, meanwhile, saw a massive opportunity slip away last week. OSU was facing TCU in a battle of unbeaten teams and the Cowboys had the Horned Frogs on the ropes, but allowed TCU to fight back and eventually win in double overtime. Will Mike Gundy’s team be able to bounce back after such a disappointing loss?

Time: 3:30 p.m. | TV: Fox | Line: Oregon -6 | Total: 70.5

UCLA is undefeated at 6-0 and is coming off consecutive home upsets over Washington and Utah. UCLA is an underdog again this week, but this time it’s on the road in Oregon, Chip Kelly’s old stomping grounds. The Bruins are led by quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and running back Zach Charbonnet. On the other side is Oregon, which has been hot since its ugly season-opening loss to Georgia. The Ducks are in their first season under Dan Lanning, who helped lead UGA to last year’s national title as defensive coordinator. Oregon’s strong suit has actually been its offense though. After posting just three points in the UGA loss, Oregon has averaged 49.8 points per game in the five games since.

Time: 3:30 p.m. | TV: CBS | Line: LSU -1.5 | Total: 67.5

While No. 6 Alabama is set to host No. 24 Mississippi State in the 7 p.m. window, this feels like the more competitive SEC game on Saturday’s schedule. Ole Miss is 7-0 and ranked No. 7 in the country but is actually a slight underdog for its trip to Baton Rouge to face LSU. LSU, in its first season under Brian Kelly, has had some highs and lows so far in 2022, but the win over Florida was the best LSU’s offense has looked all year. Can a performance like that carry over to this week’s showdown with Ole Miss?

Time: 8 p.m. | TV: FS1 | Line: TCU -3.5 | Total: 54.5

TCU has been one of the biggest stories of the season so far. In Year 1 under Sonny Dykes, the Horned Frogs were expected to finish in the middle of the pack in the Big 12. Instead, they are the last undefeated team remaining in the conference at 6-0 and 3-0 in league play. Meanwhile, Kansas State should be nice and rested after its bye week. The Wildcats are 5-1 on the year, having only lost at home to Tulane in an upset. The strong start for K-State has been led by QB Adrian Martinez. A transfer from Nebraska, Martinez has only thrown for 900 yards, but he’s rushed for 546 yards and nine scores and has been an excellent pairing with shifty running back Deuce Vaughn. Those two, plus a solid K-State defense, will present a big challenge to TCU.

Pac-12 crown jewels USC, UCLA steering league’s sudden resurgence while preparing for Big Ten departures

Melva Thompson-Robinson might reflect the current state of the Pac-12. Her son, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, is UCLA’s star quarterback and a Heisman Trophy candidate who has led the Bruins to an undefeated record nearly midway through the season. But her heart — at least part of it — is with her alma mater 1,600 miles away.

“My mom is a diehard Michigan fan,” Dorian said. “She’s been a little bit disappointed I can’t go play in The Big House. Shoot, even sometimes she’s watching the Michigan game on her phone while she’s at my game.”

That would be a pithy anecdote except that UCLA will soon be playing Michigan in Big Ten conference games. The resurgence of the Pac-12 this season, then, might come with an asterisk. (* Don’t get used to it.)

USC and UCLA are both undefeated and on their way out the door. For every game they win, it puts the current Pac-12 closer to a playoff berth. It’s also part of a long, painful goodbye from the conference they made famous.

Thanks to the shocking events of the summer, the Trojans and Bruins have 1 ½ seasons left in the Pac-12 before heading to the Big Ten in 2024. Meanwhile, the current state of affairs is a reminder, as the conference is back on the national radar, how weakened it will be without the two Los Angeles centerpieces.

“It’s been a long time since both L.A. schools have been this successful out of the gate,” UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond said. “There are still a lot of games to play … but you’ve got to enjoy these moments.”

Call it bittersweet or refreshing. The West Coast is back. The Pac-12 has four teams ranked this late in the season for the first time since 2019. USC and UCLA are both 6-0 for the first time since 2005. Oregon has won five in a row. Defending champion Utah has played in three of the last four Pac-12 Championship Games.

For a league that hasn’t participated in the College Football Playoff in six years, this is heady stuff.

Also, an omen: USC and UCLA were always the shining jewels of the Pac-12. They have combined to win at least a share of 56 conference titles going back to when the old Pacific Coast Conference was formed in 1915. Together, they have played in 46 of the 108 Rose Bowls.

Now, they’re something like carpetbaggers. When they leave for the Big Ten in two years, there will be a giant hole for the conference in Los Angeles.

“I’m not giving up on L.A.,” Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff said before the season.

At the same time the L.A. schools are winning, behind the scenes they are transitioning to a new league. Another bittersweet going-away reminder: There is now a possibility that one or both could be playing at “home” in the Rams’ SoFi Stadium, site of the 2023 CFP National Championship.

“You don’t want to see the Pac-12 schools go away,” Melva Thompson-Robinson said. “But, you know, it’s also a new world.”

A pair of showdowns in the next two weeks will sharpen the nation’s focus on the Pac-12. No. 6 USC plays at No. 20 Utah on Saturday. The defending champion Utes split their last eight meetings with the Trojans. Then next week, No. 11 UCLA travels to No. 12 Oregon. The Ducks been on a run since that embarrassing loss to Georgia.

Utah is 4-2 but still in line for another Pac-12 title. The key is to stay away from the league’s familiar habit: failure to produce a dominant team. There hasn’t been a one-loss or no-loss team in the Pac-12 across a full season since 2016.

For now, this is the highest of times for the Pac-12 since Washington made the conference’s last CFP appearance that season. The Huskies were quickly eliminated by Alabama in the semifinal. Since then, it’s largely been a struggle on the national scene.

Dan Lanning is Oregon’s third coach in the last seven seasons. Washington and Washington State have each had three in that span. Utah’s Kyle Whittingham is the standard. Only Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz has currently been at an FBS school longer. The Utes have grown stronger as time has passed winning four division titles since 2015 and playing in their first Rose Bowl in January.

That’s part of the reason the Big 12 is interested in scooping up Utah if realignment continues.

Kliavkoff declined to comment for this story. Instead, the conference forwarded a statement from Merton Hanks, senior associate commissioner for football operations.

“Our member schools, working with the conference, have made a concerted effort over the past 18 months to elevate Pac-12 football,” read the statement in part. “… These efforts have benefited the football programs at all of our schools, and we are very pleased with the results on the field to date this season.”

For now, it’s OK just to bask in excellence. Lincoln Riley’s turnaround at USC has surpassed the most optimistic projections. Oklahoma transfer QB Caleb Williams has delivered as promised becoming a Heisman candidate himself. USC’s defense has made a quantum leap under coordinator Alex Grinch. The Trojans lead the country in interceptions and sacks.

Positivity abounds. Riley was asked this week about being undefeated at the halfway point and playing six more games.

“Just six?” asked Riley rhetorically, obviously referring to the Trojans’ season lasting longer than 12 games. “That’ll get quoted. Everybody calm down.”

It’s hard to calm down when L.A. is buzzing.

“I’m trying to stay inside my house as much as possible,” said the UCLA quarterback nicknamed DTR. “Stay out of all the noise so I can stay focused. I’ve been there before when we got a nice win and nice ranking and then it’s gotten taken away from us and nobody wants to deal with us anymore.”

Such is life in a city where you’re only as good as your next championship. UCLA hasn’t won the Pac-12 since 1998 when it was the Pac-10 and Bob Toledo came within a game of taking the Bruins to the first BCS title game. USC has won one Pac-12 title since 2008. Utah are Oregon are the established power in the league the last five years. Since 2018, it’s the Ducks (40-13, two Pac-12 championships) and the Utes (37-16, one) ranked 1-2 in winning percentage.

Meanwhile, USC is in the middle of one of the nation’s biggest turnarounds this season as it continues to rebound from a 4-8 record in 2021.

“It’s just a start,” Riley said. “It’s not a guarantee to anything. This is when it gets most fun.”

Riley should know. This is why USC spent more than $100 million over 10 years to get him. The 39-year-old coach has already been to three CFPs.

UCLA was already building something in Westwood. Dorian Thompson-Robinson chose a fifth year with the Bruins over the NFL after the program showed signs of life in an eight-win 2021. All at once, UCLA has matured. DTR and Bruins coach Chip Kelly arrived together five years ago. The quarterback was a coveted four-star prospect from Las Vegas who committed to Jim Mora Jr. (fired before DTR arrived).

Meanwhile, Kelly committed to restarting his college career after a largely unsuccessful NFL run.

All of it took a while. Kelly was extended in December by Jarmond. It was a show of support and commitment. The school could have avoided a potential $9 million buyout by allowing the original contract to expire, but that would have required an eight-figure transition to a new coach. UCLA was already upside-down budget wise, which explains a lot regarding the move to the Big Ten.

“I think I’m more focused on us building something out West and playing some great football,” Jarmond said. “To me, that’s the most important thing. There has been a narrative that West Coast football has not been national. We’re showing the best football is being played out West in Los Angeles.”

DTR has put himself in the Heisman conversation setting the school record for career touchdown passes and leading the league in passing. Duke transfer Jake Bobo has become his favorite target, leading the team in receiving and catching five of DTR’s 15 touchdown passes.

“It was a group of guys who came on official visits,” Thompson-Robinson recalled. “There were offensive linemen on the visit with [Bobo]. But I had to host those two because I needed some offensive linemen this season. Bobo was there. I didn’t know even know he was a recruit. He was kind of in the background, kind of shy.”

This sort of success has begged a previously unasked question: Can West Coast football be exported to the Midwest?

USC and UCLA minds are already drifting East. Kelly said this week his offense is “what the [Big Ten] conference is all about.” When he was at New Hampshire, Kelly was inspired by Bill Walsh’s West Coast Offense. At the FCS power, Kelly called it the “See Coast Offense.”

“We see it, we like it, go run it,” Kelly said.

Sorry, but Bo Schembechler never came to mind when Kelly was chasing champions and strafing defenses with his high-powered Oregon offenses 12 or so years ago. Kelly is a forward thinker who puts an emphasis on program development, nutrition, sleep and winning the day. We’ll see how that blends with a bratwurst and beer in 30-degree temperatures.

Kelly’s new defensive coordinator is an old friend, veteran Bill McGovern. The former Holy Cross defensive back has coached west of Chicago once in 37-year career (2020 as a Nebraska analyst). The Bruins defense had to get better, and McGovern’s unit has gone from 107th nationally in 2021 to No. 2 in the Pac-12 this season.

“He lets us be free,” senior safety Stephan Blaylock said. “Anything we want to bring up, we can bring up. We had a lot of player-led meetings. We had dinner on our own. I felt like that brought us all together.”

Maybe Big Ten affiliation can grow what have been disappointing crowds at Rose Bowl this season. Attendance is down more than 24% year-over-year, the biggest decrease among Power Five programs, according to D1Ticker. The reasons are many: heat, traffic, quality of opponent, entertainment competition.

“I know the [Big Ten] fan base is amazing. Them coming out here might help fill out the stadium more,” said Blaylock, a native of nearby Compton, California. “… I tell people, ‘I don’t blame y’all for not getting out there. When I was a recruit, I didn’t want to drive to Pasadena and sit through traffic. Then the parking is crazy also.”

Sounds a lot like game day at The Big House or The Shoe. And that’s where the dichotomy emerges again.

Melva Thompson-Robinson couldn’t be more Michigan. She went to school with current Michigan AD Warde Manuel. The year she graduated, 1989, Michigan won the NCAA Tournament and Rose Bowl.

Her son still exchanges texts with Arizona coach Jedd Fisch, whom he met on a Michigan recruiting visit when Fisch was a Jim Harbaugh assistant.

“I think it will be fun for me to come back as an alum to catch some away games and some home games with how well the Big Ten travels,” DTR said.

“I still cheer for the Maize & Blue,” Melva said. “I think it would be pretty awesome if UCLA ended up playing Michigan in the Rose Bowl.”
