Microsoft Patch Tuesday, February 2021 Edition — Krebs on Security

Microsoft today rolled out updates to plug at least 56 security holes in its Windows operating systems and other software. One of the bugs is already being actively exploited, and six of them were publicized prior to today, potentially giving attackers a head start in figuring out how to exploit the flaws.

Nine of the 56 vulnerabilities earned Microsoft’s most urgent “critical” rating, meaning malware or miscreants could use them to seize remote control over unpatched systems with little or no help from users.

The flaw being exploited in the wild already — CVE-2021-1732 — affects Windows 10, Server 2016 and later editions. It received a slightly less dire “important” rating and mainly because it is a vulnerability that lets an attacker increase their authority and control on a device, which means the attacker needs to already have access to the target system.

Two of the other bugs that were disclosed prior to this week are critical and reside in Microsoft’s .NET Framework, a component required by many third-party applications (most Windows users will have some version of .NET installed).

Windows 10 users should note that while the operating system installs all monthly patch roll-ups in one go, that rollup does not typically include .NET updates, which are installed on their own. So when you’ve backed up your system and installed this month’s patches, you may want to check Windows Update again to see if there are any .NET updates pending.

A key concern for enterprises is another critical bug in the DNS server on Windows Server 2008 through 2019 versions that could be used to remotely install software of the attacker’s choice. CVE-2021-24078 earned a CVSS Score of 9.8, which is about as dangerous as they come.

Recorded Future says this vulnerability can be exploited remotely by getting a vulnerable DNS server to query for a domain it has not seen before (e.g. by sending a phishing email with a link to a new domain or even with images embedded that call out to a new domain). Kevin Breen of Immersive Labs notes that CVE-2021-24078 could let an attacker steal loads of data by altering the destination for an organization’s web traffic — such as pointing internal appliances or Outlook email access at a malicious server.

Windows Server users also should be aware that Microsoft this month is enforcing the second round of security improvements as part of a two-phase update to address CVE-2020-1472, a severe vulnerability that first saw active exploitation back in September 2020.

The vulnerability, dubbed “Zerologon,” is a bug in the core “Netlogon” component of Windows Server devices. The flaw lets an unauthenticated attacker gain administrative access to a Windows domain controller and run any application at will. A domain controller is a server that responds to security authentication requests in a Windows environment, and a compromised domain controller can give attackers the keys to the kingdom inside a corporate network.

Microsoft’s initial patch for CVE-2020-1472 fixed the flaw on Windows Server systems, but did nothing to stop unsupported or third-party devices from talking to domain controllers using the insecure Netlogon communications method. Microsoft said it chose this two-step approach “to ensure vendors of non-compliant implementations can provide customers with updates.” With this month’s patches, Microsoft will begin rejecting insecure Netlogon attempts from non-Windows devices.

A couple of other, non-Windows security updates are worth mentioning. Adobe today released updates to fix at least 50 security holes in a range of products, including Photoshop and Reader. The Acrobat/Reader update tackles a critical zero-day flaw that Adobe says is actively being exploited in the wild against Windows users, so if you have Adobe Acrobat or Reader installed, please make sure these programs are kept up to date.

There is also a zero-day flaw in Google’s Chrome Web browser (CVE-2021-21148) that is seeing active attacks. Chrome downloads security updates automatically, but users still need to restart the browser for the updates to fully take effect. If you’re a Chrome user and notice a red “update” prompt to the right of the address bar, it’s time to save your work and restart the browser.

Standard reminder: While staying up-to-date on Windows patches is a must, it’s important to make sure you’re updating only after you’ve backed up your important data and files. A reliable backup means you’re less likely to pull your hair out when the odd buggy patch causes problems booting the system.

So do yourself a favor and backup your files before installing any patches. Windows 10 even has some built-in tools to help you do that, either on a per-file/folder basis or by making a complete and bootable copy of your hard drive all at once.

Keep in mind that Windows 10 by default will automatically download and install updates on its own schedule. If you wish to ensure Windows has been set to pause updating so you can back up your files and/or system before the operating system decides to reboot and install patches, see this guide.

And as always, if you experience glitches or problems installing any of these patches this month, please consider leaving a comment about it below; there’s a better-than-even chance other readers have experienced the same and may chime in here with some helpful tips.

Delayed opening Tuesday at Prisma Health COVID-19 vaccine distribution site

Prisma Health has delayed Tuesday’s open of many COVID-19 vaccination sites in the Upstate for Tuesday, Feb. 9 until noon. >>For the very latest from Prisma click here. WYFF News 4’s Kylie Jones was at the Greenville Kmart site on Tuesday afternoon. Watch her report above or below: Prisma announced Monday afternoon that the hospital system would not be able to hold any walk-in vaccinations the rest of the week. A release from Prisma outlined the two factors that led to this decision:”First, the delivery of our supply was changed at the last minute on Friday. We were told our supply would come in stages over several days this week, instead of Monday and Tuesday mornings. This morning we received only a partial supply delivery for the Upstate – and we still do not know the amount of the rest of supply we will receive this week for the Upstate or the Midlands. “The second factor is that the 65-69-year-old group showed up in overwhelming numbers today, and we have exhausted all of our walk-in vaccine supply for this week.”People who are due for their second dose – but who did not have an appointment – should now make an appointment on Prisma Health MyChart, officials said. As a reminder, officials said, the vaccination card is not an appointment. Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have said that second doses can occur anytime between 21-42 days after the first dose. “As we receive our additional vaccine supply this week, we will open up second-dose appointments that match our supply for the remainder of the week,” officials said. For real-time updates at Prisma Health vaccination sites, visit www.PrismaHealth.org/Vaccine. Those without access to computers may also call 833-2PRISMA (833-277-4762) for assistance, which is currently experiencing very high volumes. We are working to expand the capacity.

1,201 more COVID-19 cases, 17 deaths reported Tuesday in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 1,201 on Tuesday, with 17 more deaths reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Six of those deaths occurred before January 13 but were still being investigated by the state medical examiner’s office, according to the health department.

The health department estimates there are now 36,747 active COVID-19 cases in Utah. The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 1,394, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that time period is now 16.6%.

There are 396 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, including 130 in intensive care, state data shows. About 76% of all intensive care unit beds are occupied in Utah as of Tuesday, including about 79% of ICU beds in the state’s 16 referral hospitals. About 52% of non-ICU hospital beds are occupied, according to health department data.

A total of 325,457 vaccines have been administered in the state, up from 311,785 Monday.

The new numbers indicate a 0.3% increase in positive cases since Monday. Of the 2,035,662 people tested for COVID-19 in Utah so far, 17.1% have tested positive for COVID-19. The total number of tests conducted increased by 14,840, and 7,499 of those were tests of people who had not previously been tested for COVID-19.

The deaths reported Tuesday were:

  • A Davis County woman who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was hospitalized when she died
  • A Salt Lake County woman who was over the age of 85 and was a resident of a long-term care facility

Tuesday’s totals give Utah 348,409 total confirmed cases, with 13,576 total hospitalizations and 1,685 total deaths from the disease. An estimated 309,977 Utah COVID-19 cases are now being considered recovered, according to the health department.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox is scheduled to provide a pandemic update at 11 a.m. Thursday, according to the governor’s office.

Methodology:

Test results now include data from PCR tests and antigen tests. Positive COVID-19 test results are reported to the health department immediately after they are confirmed, but negative test results may not be reported for 24 to 72 hours.

The total number of cases reported by the Utah Department of Health each day includes all cases of COVID-19 since Utah’s outbreak began, including those who are currently infected, those who have recovered from the disease, and those who have died.

Recovered cases are defined as anyone who was diagnosed with COVID-19 three or more weeks ago and has not died.

Referral hospitals are the 16 Utah hospitals with the capability to provide the best COVID-19 health care.

Deaths reported by the state typically occurred two to seven days prior to when they are reported, according to the health department. Some deaths may be from even further back, especially if the person is from Utah but has died in another state.

The health department reports both confirmed and probable COVID-19 case deaths per the case definition outlined by the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists. The death counts are subject to change as case investigations are completed.

For deaths that are reported as COVID-19 deaths, the person would not have died if they did not have COVID-19, according to the health department.

Melvin Capital, hedge fund targeted by Reddit board, closed out of GameStop short position Tuesday

Melvin Capital closed out its short position in GameStop on Tuesday afternoon after taking a huge loss, manager of the fund Gabe Plotkin told CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin.

The brick-and-mortar videogame retailer, hedge funds’ most-hated stock, was targeted by an army of retail investors who marshaled against short sellers in online chat rooms. In the Reddit forum “wallstreetbets” with more than two million subscribers, rookie investors encouraged each other to pile into GameStop’s equity and call options, creating massive short squeezes in the name.

CNBC could not confirm the amount of losses the firm took on the short position. Citadel and Point72 have infused close to $3 billion into Melvin Capital to shore up the fund’s finances. Plotkin told Sorkin that the speculation that the firm would file for bankruptcy is false.

GameStop shares have more than doubled this week alone to nearly $150 apiece, driving its January gains to 685%. The stock was worth just $6 four months ago.

GameStop shares gained about 60% in premarket trading Wednesday, after popping more than 100% earlier in the session.

Amid GameStop’s explosive rally, short sellers have accumulated losses of more than $5 billion year to date in the stock, including a loss of $917 million on Monday and $1.6 billion on Friday, according to data from S3 Partners.

Short seller Andrew Left of Citron Research said Wednesday that he has covered the majority of his short position in GameStop at a loss. He previously said GameStop will fall back to $20 a share “fast” and called out attacks from the “angry mob” that owns the stock.

Investor Michael Burry said in a now-deleted tweet Tuesday that trading in GameStop is “unnatural, insane, and dangerous” and there should be “legal and regulatory repercussions.” Burry shot to fame by betting against the housing bubble and was featured in Michael Lewis’ book “The Big Short.”

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission declined to comment.

Social Capital’s Chamath Palihapitiya jumped into the controversial name, saying in a Tuesday tweet that he bought GameStop call options betting the stock will go higher. His tweet seemed to intensify the rally in the previous session. The stock ended the day 92% higher at $147.98.

Elon Musk after the bell Tuesday commented on the mania on Twitter and linked to the “wallstreetbets” Reddit chat room. The Tesla CEO tweeted to his 42 million followers “Gamestonk!!” The comment appeared to help send GameStop shares soaring in extended trading Tuesday.

NEW YORK — U.S. equity futures were recovering from negative territory Tuesday hours before the opening bell after finishing mixed Monday as a deluge of corporate earnings reports were scheduled to arrive this week.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller stocks fell 0.3%, to 2,163.27. The yield on the 10-year Treasury sank to 1.03% from 1.07% late Friday.

Besides Apple, more than 100 companies in the S&P 500 are scheduled to tell investors this week how they fared during the last three months of 2020. They include American Express, Johnson & Johnson, 3M, AT&T and Tesla.

As a whole, analysts expect S&P 500 companies to say their fourth-quarter profit fell 5% from a year earlier. That’s a milder drop than the 9.4% they were forecasting earlier this month, according to FactSet.

President Joe Biden has proposed a $1.9 trillion plan to send $1,400 to most Americans and deliver other support for the economy. But his party holds only the slimmest possible majority in the Senate, making approval uncertain. Several Republicans have already voiced opposition to parts of the plan.

The coronavirus pandemic is also worsening and doing more damage by the day. A UN agency said Monday that four times as many jobs were lost last year as in 2009, during the global financial crisis.

The Federal Reserve will begin a two-day meeting on interest-rate policy Tuesday, and the wide expectation is for it to keep the accelerator floored on its stimulus for the economy and markets. It has said it plans to keep interest rates low even if inflation rises above its 2% target.

Meanwhile, traders are keeping a wary eye on rising coronavirus infections in various countries and a bumpy rollout of vaccinations in the U.S. The spread of variants that are thought to be more easily transmissible and might be less effectively targeted by existing vaccines is adding to alarm.

Vaccine maker Moderna said Monday that it will study whether a booster shot would be needed to protect against variants of the coronavirus, “out of an abundance of caution.”

“Nowadays the market mood is set by either the hopes that the COVID vaccine would mark the end of the biggest economic downturn of our lifetime, or the stimulus hopes to keep our heads above water. Yesterday, both hopes got smashed,” Ipek Ozkardeskaya, a senior analyst at Swissquote Bank, said in a commentary.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index declined 1% to 28,546.18, while the Shanghai Composite index dropped 1.5% to 3,569.43. South Korea’s Kospi lost 2.1% to 3,140.31. Shares also fell in Southeast Asia.

Harris County to launch coronavirus vaccine waitlist Tuesday

HOUSTON – Harris County will launch a waitlist Tuesday for people who want to get the coronavirus vaccine.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said the list is aimed at creating an equitable way to distribute and administer the vaccine.

“Getting a COVID-19 vaccine shouldn’t be like ‘The Hunger Games,’” Hidalgo said. “It shouldn’t be about who can hit refresh on a browser the fastest.”

Hidalgo said the waitlist will be made available at ReadyHarris.org or by calling 832-927-8787. The phone line will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and is available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese.

While anyone can signup for the waitlist, only people who are eligible to receive the vaccine in phases 1A and 1B will be able to get the shot at this time, Hidalgo said. She said the system will not be a first-come-first-served system. She said eligible people will be subject to a randomization system to ensure that the administration process is fair. She said that people who are currently ineligible will be contacted once they are eligible.

Hidalgo said Harris County Public Health has administered 27,426 vaccines to date and the county is receiving about 9,000 doses per week. She said that while county leaders are advocating for receiving more doses, the waitlist does not mean that the county has a huge stockpile of the vaccine.

“Supply continues to be extremely limited,” Hidalgo said.
