Nancy Pelosi breaks silence on husband Paul’s attack: ‘Heartbroken and traumatized’
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a letter to all members of Congress that her family is “heartbroken” after a “violent man” attacked her husband, Paul Pelosi, on early Friday morning in the couple’s San Francisco residence.
“Yesterday morning, a violent man broke into our family home, demanded to confront me and brutally attacked my husband Paul. Our children, our grandchildren and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our Pop. We are grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and emergency services, and for the life-saving medical care he is receiving,” Nancy Pelosi said in the “Dear Colleague” letter to all members of Congress on Saturday.
Nancy Pelosi said that her family has received an “outpouring” of support from other members of Congress, and wrote that Paul Pelosi’s “condition continues to improve.”
“Please know that the outpouring of prayers and warm wishes from so many in the Congress is a comfort to our family and is helping Paul make progress with his recovery. His condition continues to improve,” Pelosi wrote. “We are also comforted by the words of the Book of Isaiah: ‘Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.'”
PAUL PELOSI JR. UPDATES ON FATHER’S CONDITION OUTSIDE SAN FRANCISCO HOSPITAL AFTER HAMMER ATTACK
“We thank you and pray for the continued safety and well-being of your family,” Nancy Pelosi wrote.
San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said that David DePape, 42, now faces charges of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary and other felonies in relation to the attack, which happened after 2 a.m. on Friday.
When police officers arrived at the Pelosi’s residence, Scott said that Paul Pelosi and DePape were struggling over a hammer. Officers gave an order for the men to drop the hammer, and, according to Scott, DePape began attacking Paul Pelosi.
DePape was then tackled by police officers and taken into custody. Officials are investigating a possible motive.

Scott said that Paul Pelosi was hit at least once with the hammer.
Paul Pelosi was sent to a local hospital, where he went through surgery to repair a skull fracture in addition to other injuries, according to a spokesperson for Nancy Pelosi, who said he’s expected to make a full recovery.
According to officials and sources, the suspect yelled “Where is Nancy?” when he allegedly broke into the house.

Uvalde teacher Emilia Marin traumatized over open door claim
A teacher at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, is traumatized after authorities initially said the gunman entered the building through a door she left ajar, her attorney said.
“She can’t stop shaking,” said Don Flanary, an attorney for teacher Emilia Marin.
The educator was helping a co-worker bring in food for a party when 18-year-old gunman Salvador Ramos arrived at the school in Uvalde, CNN reported.
Authorities first said Ramos entered the school through a door left ajar by Marin — but the Texas Department of Public Safety has since clarified that the gunman got in via an unlocked door.
“She felt alone, like she couldn’t even grieve,” Flanary told CNN of the incorrect initial account by authorities. “She second-guessed herself, like ‘Did I not do that?’”
Marin is having trouble dealing with the insinuation that her actions contributed to the massacre, Flanary told ABC News.
“It’s traumatic for her when it’s insinuated that she’s involved, the door open,” Marin’s attorney said. “She’s heartbroken.”
Marin took immediate actions to stop Ramos’ onslaught, Flanary insisted.
“She sees him throw a bag over the fence and he has the weapon, the gun, around his chest,” Flanary recalled. “He hops the fence and starts running at her.”
Marin then kicked away the rock that was keeping the door open and slammed the door, Flanary said.
“She thought she was going to die herself,” the attorney continued. “She was waiting for him to come in. Obviously, she’s heartbroken with all the lives lost.”
Marin had dashed inside to report the crash, leaving the door propped open with a rock, Flanary said. She then returned while still on the line with cops and saw a co-worker running out to safety and others across the street at a funeral home while yelling, “He’s got a gun!”
The latest from the Texas school shooting
The gunman never encountered Marin, or her grandson, who attends the school. But the horrifying attack has left the educator tormented and she had to seek a neurologist’s care, Flanary said.
The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed investigators determined the teacher had closed the door, but it failed to lock, ABC News reported.
Marin’s attorney told CNN the ensuing moments would have been the “most horrific thing anyone could have endured.”
Ramos started firing outside the school before making his way inside. While “frozen” in fear, Marin got a text message from her daughter asking if she was safe — but she silenced her phone, believing Ramos might hear the device, CNN reported.
“She thought he was going to come in and kill her and she made peace with that,” Flanary continued.
Ramos ultimately targeted another classroom packed with students, killing 19, along with two teachers, in the deadliest school shooting in nearly a decade.
Flanary is helping Marin in a possible civil claim against Daniel Defense, the manufacturer of the firearm used in the attack, CNN reported.
The petition doesn’t accuse the manufacturer of wrongdoing, but seeks to investigate whether Marin has legal grounds to file a claim against Daniel Defense, which did not reply to an inquiry from CNN, the network reported.
Marin does not plan on suing the school, the police or the school district, according to the report.
Her traumatic experience echoes those of other Uvalde survivors — like a third-grader who hid inside the school and prayed “so we don’t die” as an hour went by before cops killed Ramos.
Leon Hernandez, 9, told The Post Thursday he ducked beneath a desk with a female classmate as Ramos marched into the classroom and elsewhere throughout the building.
“She was praying and scared,” Leon said of his classmate. “I said we had to pray so we don’t die.”
Leon spoke to The Post Thursday outside a vigil for the victims in Uvalde. Funerals, visitations and burials for the 21 victims began on Monday and are expected to continue through mid-June.

Father of suspect in UK lawmaker’s slaying is ‘traumatized’
LEIGH-ON-SEA, England (AP) — The father of a man held for the fatal stabbing of a British lawmaker during a meeting with local voters has told British media that he was shocked and “traumatized” by his son’s arrest, as police continued questioning the suspect under terrorism laws.
Harbi Ali Kullane, a former adviser to Somalia’s prime minister, said counter-terrorism police had visited him, according to the Sunday Times.
“I’m feeling very traumatized. It’s not something that I expected or even dreamed of,” he was quoted as saying.
British authorities have not released the name of the suspect in the killing of 69-year-old Conservative lawmaker David Amess Friday, but British media reported the suspect was Ali Harbi Ali, 25, believed to be a British citizen with Somali heritage.
Amess, a long-serving lawmaker, was stabbed multiple times during a regular meeting with his constituents at a church in Leigh-on-Sea, a town about 40 miles (62 kilometers) east of London.
The Metropolitan Police has described the attack as terrorism and said early investigations suggested “a potential motivation linked to Islamist extremism,” without giving details.
It is unclear what, if any, the suspect’s connection to Amess was.
Police have been granted extra time to question the suspect, who was arrested on suspicion of murder but has not yet been charged. The BBC and others reported that the suspect was referred to a government program aimed at preventing people from supporting extremism some years ago, but said he was not a formal subject of interest for security services.
Many in the seaside town of Leigh-on-Sea have laid flowers in tribute to Amess, a father of five who has served in parliament since 1983 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2015. A church service in the town is planned for later Sunday. In north London, police investigating the killing continued to search an apartment and another address, as officers stood guard outside.
Friday’s killing renewed concern about the risks politicians run as they go about their work. The attack came five years after Labour lawmaker Jo Cox was killed by a far-right extremist in her constituency in West Yorkshire.
Home Secretary Priti Patel said Sunday that officials are reviewing security arrangements for lawmakers, and the measures being considered include police protection during regular meetings, known as “surgeries,” between lawmakers and their constituents.
But Patel added that she did not believe that the killing of Amess should change the relationship between lawmakers and their voters.
“This should never, ever break that link between an elected representative and their democratic role, responsibility and duty to the people who elected them,” she told Sky News on Sunday.
Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons, said he was working closely with the Home Office and the police to identify ways to improve lawmakers’ safety. But, like Patel, he said “we should not hide away.”
“The very essence of being an MP (Member of Parliament) is to help and be seen by our constituents. They are the people who elected us to represent them, so surely making ourselves available to them is the cornerstone of our democracy?” Hoyle wrote in The Observer and Mail on Sunday newspapers.
The Council of Somali Organizations, which works with Somali communities across the U.K., condemned the killing, saying it was an “affront to all of our values and our democratic society itself.”
