Thanksgiving tradition started by mistaken text lives on for a seventh year

Comment

Just two days ahead of Thanksgiving, Jamal Hinton told fans what they wanted to hear: “To answer all your questions, yes Thanksgiving year 7 is planned out! See you guys Thursday!” he posted on Twitter on Tuesday.

Fans had been waiting with bated breath for Hinton to confirm his plans for an annual Thanksgiving meal with Wanda Dench — a now 65-year-old grandmother who accidentally texted him six years ago, inviting him to Thanksgiving.

As people fear the fate of Twitter amid Elon Musk’s recent takeover and the turmoil that has ensued, some users expressed worry that they might miss the long-awaited selfie of Hinton and Dench, which the unlikely pair post on social media each year.

“I hope twitter survives at least til next week so we can get our annual update from them,” one fan wrote Friday.

“Can Twitter hang on until Jamal Hinton and Wanda Dench share their annual Thanksgiving photo?” another tweeted Nov. 12. “That’s just DAYS away.”

Although their selfie has yet to be posted, it’s clear that the touching Thanksgiving tradition will, indeed, carry on for a seventh straight year — and the internet is delighted.

“This a Thanksgiving staple now like yams and mac & cheese,” someone tweeted after Hinton confirmed their plans.

The story started in November 2016, when Dench accidentally sent a text message to Hinton, thinking it was her grandson. She invited him to Thanksgiving.

When Hinton, then 17, received the message from an unknown number, he asked who it was. Dench responded: “Your grandma.”

“Grandma? Can I have a picture?” Hinton replied. He received a selfie of Dench, whom he had never seen before.

Hinton wrote back: “You not my grandma,” with a laughing emoji, then jokingly asked: “Can I still get a plate tho?”

Dench earnestly responded: “Of course you can. That’s what [grandmas] do … feed every one.”

Hinton took her up on the invitation, and so began an ongoing tradition — and an enduring friendship. Every year since the text message mix-up, Hinton has attended Dench’s Thanksgiving meal at her home in Mesa, Ariz. — a 25-minute drive from where he lives in Phoenix.

After nearly a decade of Thanksgiving holidays spent together with their respective families, people have still not stopped swooning over Hinton and Dench’s heartwarming bond. Year after year, devoted fans enthusiastically count down to their annual selfie.

They have supported each other through hardships, including the sudden death of Dench’s husband of 42 years, Lonnie Dench, who also developed a close relationship with Hinton, and was an active participant in their Thanksgiving tradition. He died of covid-19 complications in April 2020.

Before their first Thanksgiving meal without Lonnie Dench, Hinton tweeted: “Thanksgiving isn’t going to be the same anymore but we will make the best of it.”

“I don’t have my beloved Lonnie with me, but I will be with family I love dearly,” Dench echoed in a tweet, sharing a photo of her family, along with Hinton and his girlfriend, Mikaela.

In September, Dench got her first tattoo to memorialize her husband and parents, and, naturally, Hinton accompanied her for the appointment.

“I got three shooting stars. Each one represents my Guardian Angels in Heaven — my husband who stands for integrity, my mother who was courageous, and my father who was about unconditional Love,” Dench later tweeted.

Hinton and Dench’s feel-good friendship is set to be the subject of an upcoming Netflix film called “The Thanksgiving Text.” Hinton announced the partnership last December, though few details — including the release date — have been publicized.

“We are excited to share our story with the world,” Dench and Hinton said in a joint statement. “We hope it inspires more people to reach out and make connections that they wouldn’t ordinarily make.”

King Charles’ Coronation to Be Smaller, Skip Ancient Tradition: Report

  • The coronation of King Charles III may still be months away but event planning is underway.
  • It’s long been reported the king wants a “slimmed-down” monarchy, and his coronation may be similar.
  • According to the Mail on Sunday, plans for a low-key ceremony include cutting the guest list by 25%.

King Charles’ coronation is reportedly going to be a much more low-key affair than the one his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, had, the Mail On Sunday reports.

When the Queen was crowned in 1954, the occasion’s fanfare was immense. More than 8,000 guests were invited to attend the royal event at Westminster Abbey and 129 nations were officially represented at the Coronation service, according to the official royal website.

During traditional parts of the ceremony, the Queen was presented with several golden objects, including spurs, bracelets, and a robe.

However, things are likely to look different now that Charles is king, following the death of the Queen on September 8.

The Mail On Sunday reports Charles’ coronation is being planned in line with his reported desire to “slim down” the monarchy. This includes stripping back much of the pomp and fanfare coronations in British history have previously seen to reflect modern times, the outlet reports palace insiders have said.

Changes that are reported to be part of the plan include a dramatically smaller guest list and a more casual dress code. Instead of the 8,000-plus attendees, Charles’ coronation is expected to see just over 2,000, the publication reported.

Moreover, ancient traditions such as the presentation of golden objects to the monarch will reportedly be cut to shorten the length of the occasion to just over an hour. According to the Mail on Sunday, the Queen’s coronation lasted upwards of three hours. It’s also reported that Prince William, next in line for the throne, could play a significant role.

Buckingham Palace did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

As Insider previously reported, Charles’ coronation may still be months away as no official date has been confirmed. Coronations taking place months after a new British monarch has come to power is nothing new, however, as Queen Elizabeth’s coronation took place 15 months after her ascension to the throne.

But speaking to Insider, Marlene Koenig, royal historian and expert in European and British monarchies, says it’s likely to take place in June – the same month that Queen Elizabeth II was crowned nearly 70 years ago.

“It’s going to be focusing on still with the pomp and the circumstance, but not in the same way,” Koenig said of what she expects the coronation to be like.

20,000 people threw truckloads of tomatoes at each other for an hour, a national tradition

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

More than 20,000 people gathered in Bunol, Spain, to throw 130 tons of rotten tomatoes at one another on Wednesday.

The “La Tomatina” festival is a 75-year tradition for the city, but it was forced to halt the practice for the past two years due to COVID-19. Photos show party-goers covered head-to-toe in mashed tomatoes, with many of them having the foresight to wear goggles.

The truckloads of rotten and otherwise undesirable fruit started arriving at midday, and attendees launched them at one another for more than an hour, according to Reuters.

The festival’s origins are murky, but tradition says a similar fight spontaneously broke out between residents in 1945.

Opinion: Beyoncé’s ‘Break My Soul’ follows in the grand tradition of burnout songs

The track is Bey’s first single from her seventh solo album, “Renaissance,” and it’s precisely on-vibe for her stressed-out, post-pandemic audience. “Damn, they work me so damn hard, work by nine, then off past five,” she chants atop an agitated instrumental redolent of the hysterical anxiety familiar to anyone who’s committed to too many projects, then found themselves gasping for air as deadlines come crashing down around them.

As always, Beyoncé’s got her finger on America’s racing pulse, and in the grand tradition of burnout anthems, she’s conversely produced a song bursting with energy. Like Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure,” there’s no suggestion of stopping to rest. With a sound designed for heaving clubs at 2 a.m., “Break My Soul” acknowledges what a nightmare it is to power through amid overwhelming pressure and offers up a rhythm to keep you awake while you do.

The song marks a sharp U-turn from Beyoncé’s 2016 hit “Formation,” which exemplified the “rise and grind” mentality that dominated the 2010s with lyrics like “I dream it, I work hard, I grind ’til I own it.” As famous for her unrelenting work ethic as her talent, Beyoncé was the perfect figurehead for that decade’s hustle culture — typified by the meme “You have the same amount of hours in a day as Beyoncé.” If you worked with Beyoncé, this was literally true: In the 2011 short film “Year of 4,” which documented the making of the singer’s fourth album, Beyoncé declared proudly: “If I’m not sleeping, nobody’s sleeping.”

Yet despite a level of wealth and celebrity that entirely insulates her from the real world, Beyoncé seems to have caught on to the fact that its inhabitants are sick of the grind. The fantasy that we’re only ever a certain number of sleepless nights away from realizing our ambitions has curdled, and we don’t want to be roused to action by the rare freaks of nature or privilege who chased their dreams and actually caught them.

When Kim Kardashian told Variety in March that the secret to success was to “Get your [expletive] [expletive] up and work,” her cranky, underslept audience raged in response. Kardashian later insisted that the quote was taken out of context, but the damage was done. The soundbite came as a slap in the face to the millions who already work hard, but whose success is obstructed by sexist, racist systems that ensure that for some, the race to the top is significantly smoother than it is for others.

This is why burnout music has to be animated and defiant. Floaty exhortations to slow down and take care of yourself would be unbearable when, for many of us, downing tools to rest isn’t a viable option. You can tell within the first 10 seconds of “Break My Soul” that Beyoncé — and no doubt everyone who worked with her — sweated blood over this record. Even if she’s moderated her philosophy on paper since “Formation,” one suspects that, in reality, producing music for a fan base acclimated to nothing but hits still requires a gritty willingness to work until the job is done.

David Bowie and Queen shared that fanaticism when they produced their 1981 hit “Under Pressure” in a haze of competition, nitpicking, and — as Far Out Magazine put it — amid “animosity, wine, cocaine and vocal battles.” Never one to under-perform, Dolly Parton wrote her iconic 1980 single “9 to 5” on the set of the film it was the soundtrack to, rapping the baseline with her nails in-between takes playing a put-upon secretary. It’s no accident that both these songs inject energy and life into the listener — it’s a much more useful outcome than wallowing in the fatigue and relentlessness of it all.

Everyone listening to “Break My Soul” understands that Beyoncé lives an enchanted life. She belts out that she “quit” her job, and we know that if she actually had, she’s already got enough money to fund a thousand retirements.

But burnout songs aren’t instruction manuals. They’re expressions of frustration that are, by necessity, created by people with far more energy and resources than the people intended to hear them. It would be agonizing if Beyoncé produced a record about being tired that actually sounded tired, complete with earnest suggestions that we all just take a bubble bath. Who’s got time? We’re powering through — so bring on the caffeinated, adrenalized beat, and we’ll yawn and stretch and try to come to life.
