Adalberto Mondesi traded to Red Sox

BOSTON — Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom continued his quest to make his team stronger up the middle by acquiring talented but oft-injured infielder Adalberto Mondesi in a trade with the Royals on Tuesday.

In exchange, the Red Sox sent lefty reliever Josh Taylor — also a player with a history of injury issues — to Kansas City. The Red Sox will also get a player to be named or cash considerations as part of the exchange.

In Mondesi, the Red Sox get a player who led the Majors in triples (10) in 2019 and stolen bases (24) in ’20 but hasn’t been on the field much the past two seasons. With rule changes coming into play this season that should increase stolen bases, a player like Mondesi figures to be more valuable if he can stay healthy.

Mondesi tore his left ACL on April 26, 2022, which ended his season. It typically takes an athlete about nine months to return from a torn ACL injury, putting Mondesi on target to be ready for Spring Training.

In his career, Mondesi has started 241 games at short, 64 games at second and 20 at third base. Though Hernández has made only 64 starts at short compared to 187 at second, Bloom recently said that the veteran is a plus defender wherever he plays. Cora raved about how Hernández’s first-step quickness would play at shortstop.

For the last two seasons, Hernández was Boston’s primary center fielder. But after the departure of Xander Bogaerts via free agency and Trevor Story undergoing right elbow surgery that will keep him out indefinitely, the Sox decided to move Hernández back to the infield while agreeing to a deal with free-agent slugger Adam Duvall to play center field. Hernández said a few days ago that he prefers playing the infield, because he enjoys playing the game at a faster pace.

The addition of Duvall for one year at $7 million isn’t official because the deal is pending a physical. But the position-player alignment is at last coming into focus for Cora.

The lineup could look something like this:

Masataka Yoshida, LF
Kiké Hernández, SS-2B
Rafael Devers, 3B
Justin Turner, DH
Alex Verdugo, RF
Adam Duvall, CF
Triston Casas, 1B
Adalberto Mondesi, SS-2B
Reese McGuire, C

Rover Christian Arroyo, outfielder Rob Refsnyder and Connor Wong would be available off the bench. Corner infielder Bobby Dalbec and outfielder Jarren Duran will also be fighting for roster spots.

The son of former MLB outfielder Raul Mondesi, Adalberto has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, playing just 358 games while appearing in parts of seven seasons, all with the Royals. He’ll be eligible to become a free agent after the 2023 season. After famously making his MLB debut for Kansas City in the 2015 World Series, Mondesi has posted a lifetime .244/.280/.408 slash with 38 homers and 133 stolen bases in the big leagues.

Taylor was a dominant left-on-left pitcher for the Red Sox in 2021, but didn’t pitch in the Majors at all in ’22 due to a back injury. He has a 3.69 ERA with 129 K’s in 102 1/3 innings spanning 121 appearances (one start) for the Red Sox over three seasons (2019-21). The southpaw, who will turn 30 on March 2, is controllable through 2025.

Thomas Harrigan contributed to this story.

Miguel Rojas traded to Dodgers from Marlins

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers have found a way to address their infield depth, and it involves a familiar face.

Los Angeles acquired shortstop Miguel Rojas from the Marlins in exchange for Minor League infielder Jacob Amaya, the club announced on Wednesday.

Rojas, who turns 34 on Feb. 24, is entering the final season of a two-year, $10 million extension, with $5 million owed to him in 2023. In Rojas, the Dodgers get an elite defensive shortstop who is a two-time Gold Glove finalist — including last season, when he ranked in the 98th percentile of outs above average, per Statcast — as well as a respected clubhouse leader.

Beyond that, they’re reuniting with someone who secured his place in Dodgers history as a rookie in 2014. During the seventh inning of Clayton Kershaw’s no-hit bid on June 18, 2014, Rojas made an excellent pick and throw at third base to keep the effort intact and allow the ace to finish the job.

It’s that glovework for which Rojas was best known during the eight years he spent with the Marlins, after being traded there with Dee Strange-Gordon and Dan Haren for Austin Barnes, Chris Hatcher, Andrew Heaney and Kiké Hernández in December of 2014. Although he’s served as Miami’s primary shortstop for much of that span, he’s also seen time at all three other infield positions.

On the offensive side, Rojas slashed .265/.318/.366 during his time with the Marlins, with 2022 seeing him post career lows in nearly all offensive categories. He spent most of the second half of the season playing with a right wrist injury, though, ultimately undergoing debridement of his right wrist to remove cartilage in October.

After the Dodgers missed out on the big-name free-agent shortstops on the market this offseason, it seemed that Gavin Lux would get the majority of reps there in 2023. That may still be the case, but at the very least Rojas gives them some flexibility. Additionally, Rojas also bats right-handed, whereas Lux hits lefty.

Amaya, who is regarded as a plus defender at shortstop with impressive plate discipline, is expected to make his Major League debut during the 2023 season. He was selected by the Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2017 Draft. Amaya was on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster, so no additional move is needed for Rojas.

James McCann traded to Orioles

The Orioles checked off another item on their offseason to-do list on Wednesday night. This time, they went to the trade market to fill one of the holes on their roster.

McCann has two years and $24 million left on his contract, but the Orioles will assume only $5 million of that total, a source told MLB.com executive reporter Mark Feinsand. The player the Mets will receive is not expected to be a notable prospect, according to the source.

It’s a low-risk, potentially high-reward move for Baltimore, which needed a No. 2 catcher after Robinson Chirinos became a free agent. McCann, a nine-year big league veteran who has played for the Tigers, White Sox and Mets, was an All-Star with Chicago in 2019, when he had a slash line of .273/.328/.460 with 18 homers and 60 RBIs in 118 games.

However, McCann wasn’t quite as productive over his two-year stint in New York. He was limited to 61 games in 2022, due to two trips to the injured list (for a hamate bone fracture in his left wrist and a left oblique strain). The right-handed batter slashed .195/.257/.282 with three homers and 18 RBIs in ’22.

In addition to backing up Rutschman behind the plate, McCann could get some starts at designated hitter, especially against left-handed pitchers. He has a .258/.325/.452 career slash line against southpaws as opposed to a .237/.284/.351 line against righties.

McCann also played nine games at first base over the past two seasons, so he may be an option to get some time there on Ryan Mountcastle’s days off.
