How to enable new Gmail package tracking on Android, iOS

Back in November, Google announced that Gmail would directly show package and delivery tracking in your inbox. If this feature isn’t live yet, you can manually enable it in Gmail settings.

This new Gmail package tracking shows when a delivery is arriving directly in the inbox view underneath an email. There’s a truck icon and “Arriving [date]” in green.

Additionally, Gmail has redesigned the information that appears when you open a message. It’s now housed in a card with Dynamic Color used for the background. In the top-left corner you get an image preview, name, and delivery date (“From the carrier”) again. You might also see a store-specific “Order number” with the ability to quickly copy. Underneath that is an order timeline with shortcuts to “Track package” on the web and “Order details.”

Compared to the previous design, you actually see less information with “Items” truncated if you have multiple items.

When this feature was announced in early November, Google said it was rolling out on Android and iOS in the coming weeks. Once available, there’d be a “Track your packages in Gmail” card at the top of your inbox.

For those that haven’t been prompted by the card, you can (on Android) open Gmail Settings from the navigation drawer > select your email address > scroll to “General” > Package tracking — “Google will share tracking numbers for your packages with shipping carriers. You’ll get status updates here in Gmail.”

On iOS, open the redesigned settings and scroll to “Data privacy” near the bottom.

You can disable it if you prefer the old view, while Google plans to “proactively show a delay label and bring the email to the top of your inbox” in the coming months. It’s also coming to Gmail on the web.

Live Vote Count: Tracking the House Speaker Votes

On Thursday, Representative Kevin McCarthy of California offered new concessions to a group of ultraconservative Republicans that have prevented him from winning the majority of votes needed to secure the House speaker post.

The House is taking its eighth vote to name a speaker. Representative Kevin McCarthy of California still appears to lack the votes needed to win the position.

A table that shows the current tally for the most recent vote for speaker of the House.

LIVEEighth Speaker Vote Tally

Total Dem. Rep.

McCarthy

178 0 178

Donalds

15 0 15

Jeffries

200 200 0

Hern

2 0 2
1 0 1

Note: To win, a member must receive the majority of votes cast for a person, not counting “present” votes. The Constitution specifies that House members choose the speaker, but the speaker does not have to be a current or even a former representative.

Mr. McCarthy needs 218 votes if every member of Congress casts a ballot, so he only can afford to lose four Republican votes. In the seventh round of voting, held on Thursday, 19 Republicans voted for Representative Byron Donalds of Florida, one — Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida — voted for former President Donald J. Trump, and one voted “present.” All 212 Democrats voted for Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the minority leader.

Mr. McCarthy could win the speakership with fewer than 218 votes by persuading lawmakers who do not want to support him to instead vote “present” or to not vote at all.

A table that shows summary tallies for each ballot round of House speaker votes.

Ballot Round
McCarthy

Jeffries
Other Present
First 203 212 19 0
Second 203 212 19 0
Third 202 212 20 0
Fourth 201 212 20 1
Fifth 201 212 20 1
Sixth 201 212 20 1
Seventh 201 212 20 1
Eighth 178 200 18 0

Note: To win, a member must receive the majority of votes cast for a person, not counting “present” votes.

In the first vote held on Tuesday, 19 House Republicans voted for a Republican other than Mr. McCarthy. During the second vote, those same 19 opposed him but rallied around Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, a founding member of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus. Mr. Jordan pleaded with his colleagues to give their support to Mr. McCarthy, but all 19, plus an additional Republican, voted for Mr. Jordan on the third ballot.

In the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds of voting, held on Wednesday, the same 20 Republicans voted for Representative Byron Donalds of Florida, and one voted “present.” The House reconvened at noon Thursday to continue voting.

NORAD is tracking Santa around the world on Christmas Eve

CNN
 —

Santa Claus has packed his sleigh with toys for all the good kids and he has made sure the reindeer are secured for takeoff. Now, they are traveling around the world to visit millions of households.

While you are waiting to hear the jingle of bells in the air that means Santa is near, the North American Aerospace Defense Command has a tracking system to show the jolly man’s progress worldwide.

NORAD, which is responsible for protecting the skies over the United States and Canada, activates its Santa tracking system at 6 a.m. ET on Christmas Eve. People can follow Santa’s journey around the world on NORAD’s website or they can call the command center at 1-877-HI-NORAD (1-877-446-6723).

A live operator, or a recording, will give the caller Santa’s current whereabouts, according to a November 30th news release from NORAD.

The tracking service can also be accessed through the NORAD Tracks Santa app, social media, Amazon Alexa, OnStar, and the Bing search engine, according to the news release.

This is the 67th year that NORAD has tracked Santa’s yuletide journey around the world. It started by accident, according to NORAD’s website, in 1955 when a local newspaper advertisement informed children they could call Santa directly – only the contact number was misprinted.

“Instead of calling Santa, the child called the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Operations Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.,” says the website.

“Air Force Col. Harry Shoup, the commander on duty that night who answered the child’s phone call, was quick to realize a mistake had been made and assured the child he was Santa. After more incoming calls, Shoup assigned a duty officer to continue answering calls and a tradition was born, that continued when NORAD was formed in 1958.”

Thus the tradition was started, according to NORAD, and they have carried it on for decades since. Millions of families and children around the world have used the tracking service to monitor Santa’s whereabouts, according to NORAD.

Tracking flu, Covid-19 and RSV hospitalizations in the US

CNN
 —

A tough respiratory virus season is underway in the United States, as influenza and the respiratory syncytial virus came early and hit hard this year, straining the nation’s health care system and driving up hospitalizations to rates not seen in years — even as Covid-19 continues spreading across the country.

While this historic season progresses, CNN will be tracking the impact as updated illness figures are released.

Influenza hospitalizations surged this fall: The cumulative hospitalization rate per 100,000 residents, compiled by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has eclipsed at least five of the past 12 seasons.

While the seven-day rolling average of hospitalization cases derived from US Health and Human Services’ data has come down in recent weeks, experts warn a resurgence is possible as people travel and gather for the holidays.

While Covid levels remain far below prior surges, trends are definitely on the rise across the US, according to data the US Department of Health and Human Services. After a relatively quiet summer, hospitalizations have been on the rise again since early November.

More than 100 million cases have been reported in the United States since the start of the pandemic. However, the actual number of cases is likely much higher, as many individuals who are infected do not test or do not report the results of tests taken at home. As cases are undercounted, hospitalization has become a better indicator of disease trends.

RSV has hit particularly hard and early this season, with a hospitalization rate greater than the previous four seasons already.

Young children are especially vulnerable to RSV, and the virus has a particularly strong impact on children this season. Hospitalization rates for those younger than 5 are more than twice as high as any season since 2018-2019 — when the CDC began tracking data specific to kids.

The flu and other respiratory illnesses often have overlapping symptoms, such as congestion and coughing. But some are unique. RSV, for example, can cause wheezing or decreased appetite while Covid can cause shortness of breath. Testing can help determine which illness is at play, which health experts say is helpful to ensure individuals are receiving the appropriate treatment in a timely manner. For example, the antiviral Tamiflu can help treat flu, while Paxlovid is available for Covid patients.

‘Avatar 2’ Opens Far Below Tracking at $57.1M – The Hollywood Reporter

Disney and 20th Century’s Avatar: The Way of Water opened in China over the weekend to $57.1 million, a starting haul that would be considered a heroic comeback for Hollywood in the increasingly choppy China market — if the movie were made by any filmmaker other than James Cameron.

Presale rates and other online measures of audience interest had suggested Avatar 2 would open in China with well over $100 million. But a growing COVID-19 outbreak in Beijing and other major cities appears to have dampened consumer activity and scrambled all precedents. Analysts now believe the film’s performance will be characterized by a long ebb and flow of earnings rather than a tsunami.

“China’s theatrical industry continues to labor under the impact of COVID, with significant impact to original estimates,” says Rance Pow, CEO of regional box office consultancy Artisan Gateway. “This includes what may be a reluctance of people to return in force to public spaces, including cinemas — ironically, as COVID policies become more adaptable to local conditions. If so, Avatar 2‘s long runtime may work against it. However, the film is sporting excellent social media scores, James Cameron has an immense fan base in China, and his films have an established performance record of legging out well.”

On Friday, leading Chinese ticking app Maoyan was projecting Avatar 2 would earn $360 million (RMB 2.51 billion). Forecasters had good reason to be bullish: Shortly before Friday, The Way of Water exceeded the presale total achieved by Chinese blockbuster The Battle at Lake Changjin 2, which earned more than $100 million on its first day in February and ultimately topped out at $626 million. But by Sunday, Maoyan’s full-run forecast for Avatar 2 had been slashed to $143 million (RMB 1 billion), reflecting how unreliable the usual indicators had become amid the uncertainty of public health conditions.

Nonetheless, The Way of Water has been wildly well received by the Chinese viewers who have seen it so far. The film sports high social scores of 9.3 on Maoyan, 9.2 on Alibaba’s ticketing app Tao Piao Piao and 8.2 on movie site Douban.

As in many markets, The Way of Water is performing especially well on Imax in China. The film opened to $15.8 million on 735 Chinese Imax screens, a 27 percent share of the film’s weekend total, Imax’s best indexing ever in the country (overall, it was Imax’s fourth-biggest opening in China).

The Way of Water‘s fate in China now comes down to how consumer behavior evolves over the coming weeks as the local public copes with its first experience of widespread COVID infection as an everyday fact of life. The country is seeing its first nationwide surge in cases since the lifting of most testing requirements and pandemic restrictions earlier this month.

In the new absence of regular mass testing, the extent of China’s outbreak has become a matter of guesswork, but anecdotal evidence — long hospital waits, businesses hampered by absent staff and unofficial accounts of COVID fatalities — suggests a major spike underway. And while most of the world has grown accustomed to life with COVID, the Chinese public is experiencing a form of whiplash. For over two years, Beijing’s propaganda messaging has portrayed the virus and its variants as extremely deadly, as the government worked to maintain support for its draconian COVID-zero policy and the many sacrifices it entailed. Now, with restrictions suddenly lifted, official messaging has abruptly reversed course, with state media describing the latest variants of the virus as far more harmless. Alarmed by the speed of change in the official stance, a large share of the Chinese public appears to be responding by simply hunkering down and voluntarily semi-self-isolating until circumstances are clearer.

Avatar 2 has time on its side — to an extent. Assuming it is granted an official screening extension after its first four weeks of release, the film will have a largely unfettered run at Chinese cinemas until the Lunar New Year holiday, beginning Jan. 22, when the sequel to local sci-fi hit Wandering Earth debuts.

NASA Artemis 1 tracking website like flying with Orion to the moon

Ride along with NASA’s latest moon mission on a tracking website just launched by the agency.

Artemis 1, the first flight of the Artemis program, launched early in Wednesday morning (Nov. 16). A Space Launch System rocket, on its first-ever mission, successfully sent an uncrewed Orion spacecraft toward the moon.

Though the launch is over, you can keep following along with the nearly month-long mission in real time on this NASA website (opens in new tab). And, if you want, you can download the trajectory data to create your own applications, the agency has said.

The base website shows an animation of Orion in space along with the mission elapsed time, the capsule’s velocity, and its distance from Earth and from the moon. You can change the view of the Orion spacecraft by pivoting the camera or moving between four solar array wing cameras, or switch between views of the mission’s track so far. You can also gaze at the spacecraft up close.

“The ephemeris data can be used to track Orion with your own spaceflight software application or telescope. It can also be used to create a physics model, animation, visualization, tracking application or other conceivable projects,” NASA writer Erika Peters said in a blog post (opens in new tab) on Tumblr.

Available state vectors, or data describing the location and movements of Orion in space, could also be used for tracking apps and data visualizations, NASA said in a separate post (opens in new tab) about the project.

The data visible online is the same as what is generated by a group within NASA’s mission control at Johnson Space Center in Houston. The group, called flight dynamics operations (FDO), is responsible for “keeping track of where the spacecraft is, and where it is going to be,” Peters said.

FDO is gaining information from following Orion on the Deep Space Network, which is a trio of huge satellite dishes on Earth that allow communication with NASA’s missions across the solar system. Between the tracking information received and the models FDO generates, the team aims to provide accuracy on Orion’s path to feed to Artemis flight controllers.

“An accurate trajectory is essential for achieving mission objectives, maintaining communications links, lighting, adjusting the trajectory, and more,” Peters added.
