Mass Shooting at Tavern in Johannesburg, South Africa, Soweto Township Kills 15 People, Police Say

At around 12:30 am local time on Sunday, a group of men rolled up to a tavern in Johannesburg, South Africa, and shot 23 people, killing at least 15 of them, police said.

According to the South African Police Service’s media statement, 12 individuals died at the scene. A total of 15 are now dead, while seven victims remain in critical condition, The Guardian reported.

As the Associated Press reported, police are probing a report that the alleged gunmen approached the tavern—identified by a local government official as Mdlalose’s in the Nomzamo settlement in the township of Soweto—in a minibus and opened fire at bar-goers. According to the police commissioner, the number of cartridges recovered suggests that the gunmen opened fire within the tavern, a claim corroborated by witness accounts.

“[The gunman] didn’t say anything and started opening fire,” one witness, who says that the shooting lasted for approximately 10 minutes, told News24. “My friend and others at the pool table scattered for cover. He sprayed them with bullets…Four dead people were lying near me.”

A national police spokeswoman said that the suspects, who remain at large, used rifles and a 9 mm pistol in the mass shooting, in which police say people were attacked “at random.” As of right now, police do not know of a motive.

The initial investigation suggests, according to officials, that the tavern was operating legally and that all victims were of legal drinking age. According to the police commissioner, many were shot while struggling to run out of the tavern. Yet compiling a complete account of the attack is proving difficult, as the tavern was dark when the shooting occurred and witnesses struggled to identify the suspects.

The Nomzamo settlement is one of the poorest in Soweto, a relatively affluent city on the edge of Johannesburg. A national police spokesperson said that the township has long been a source of difficulty for the police, as there is no electricity.

Thabiso Letlojane, 31, is a lifelong resident of Nomzamo and told The Guardian that he was at the bar just hours before the attack.

“It’s just a normal pub,” he told the outlet. “It was very calm in the evening…It just shows that no one is safe, especially in this area. People are shooting all the time, every day every night. You can’t sleep without hearing the sound of the guns.”

Though South Africa’s murder rate dropped during the COVID-19 pandemic, it shot up in the final months of 2021. On Saturday, police say that another shooting at a bar in the city of Pietermaritzburg killed four people and injured eight others. Two weeks ago, 21 teenagers died under unknown circumstances at a tavern.

Witness Describes Chaotic Moments During Joliet Township Halloween Party Shooting – NBC Chicago

What was supposed to be an exciting time turned into a terrifying night for the more than 200 people who attended a Halloween party in Joliet Township early Sunday morning.

Two people were fatally shot and more than a dozen others sustained injured when shots erupted at approximately 12:30 a.m. in the backyard of a residence near the intersection of Jackson Street and Walnut Street, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

Two men opened fire on the crowd from an elevated porch, authorities said, unleashing mayhem and prompting partygoers to run for cover.

“Everyone was having a good time, we were back there dancing, and then all of the sudden a group of people just started firing shots, and everyone fell to the floor,” said Adolfo Sandoval, who attended the party.

The area was blocked off by crime scene tape Sunday afternoon when Sandoval returned to search for belongings he lost while running away from gunfire.

“When they started shooting, I felt the ricochet of the bullets and when I started feeling them I pushed my girlfriend to the side and I fell with her,” he recounted. “As I’m getting back up people just started stomping on me, running me over.”

A sergeant with the Will County Sheriff’s Office was nearby at the time and heard between approximately 10 to 12 gunshots. The sergeant responded to the area where the gunfire had been located, and observed more than 100 individuals fleeing the scene, running eastbound on Jackson Street, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officers responding to the scene located numerous victims, and began to perform lifesaving measures and began to treat wounds. While those officers were on the scene, additional gunshots rang out, according to authorities.

Of those injured, four sustained life-threatening gunshot wounds, police stated.

Hours after the frightening situation, Sandoval counted his blessings, knowing the outcome was much worse for so many others.

“I just feel bad for the innocent, innocent people there. It didn’t have to be like that you know what I mean?” he said.

Detectives with the Will County Sheriff’s Office are coordinating with the Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force to investigate the shooting.

Officials say that they are searching for at least two shooters. One of the men is described as an Hispanic male with facial hair. The man was wearing a red hoodie, a black flat-billed hat and dark pants. The second shooter was described as an “averaged-sized, light-skinned Black male or Hispanic man,” and was wearing a yellow hoodie and a ski mask.

Anyone with information, cellphone pictures or videos, or potential information on the suspects is asked to call the Will County Sheriff’s Office. Will County officials also have set up an anonymous tip line on their website. Individuals who wish to remain anonymous can also call Will County Crime Stoppers at 800-323-6734.

MSP: Carjacking suspects barricaded inside home in Holly Township

Police said the couple barricaded themselves in a home on East Maple Street in Holly Township.

State police said a tipster called 911 and reported a man and woman in a stolen minivan. The caller spotted the vehicle entering a rest area on northbound I-75 before Holly Road.

After troopers attempted a traffic stop, the couple fled, exiting off the freeway and crashing the vehicle before running into an occupied home.

The homeowners were released unharmed, police said.

State police said neighbors in the area had been evacuated and urged others to remain inside their homes until the situation has been resolved.

According to MSP, the woman surrendered to troopers and was taken into police custody. Authorities said the man fired shots at police and remained inside the home.

Police said a bomb squad robot was sent inside the home early Wednesday morning after they received no response from the suspected gunman. Authorities said the robot found the body of the male suspect, who appeared to have died from a gun shot wound.
