Astronomers Worldwide ‘Troubled’ By New ‘Cell Phone Tower in Space’

A sprawling new satellite built to connect directly with mobile phones on the surface is brighter than most of the stars in the night sky, according to astronomers who are calling it a threat to their work and humanity’s view of the universe.

The offending orbital object is AST SpaceMobile’s Bluewalker 3, which was launched on Sept. 10, but its 64-square-meter (693-square-foot) array of solar panels and antennas was just fully unfurled earlier this month.

The International Astronomical Union coordinated observations from around the planet, which found that the satellite is almost as bright as stars such as Antares and Spica, the 15th and 16th brightest in the night sky, respectively. Another study found it to be a little less reflective, on par with the 22nd brightest star or so.

It isn’t just Bluewalker 3 that concerns astronomers, but rather the fact it serves as a test model for a constellation of over 100 so-called Bluebirds the company aims to launch as part of its plan to build a network of satellites to provide 5G connectivity from space.

“BlueWalker 3 is a big shift in the constellation satellite issue and should give us all reason to pause,” Piero Benvenuti, director of the IAU Center for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky from Satellite Constellation Interference, said in a statement.

Astronomers have been more concerned about the potential impacts from mega-constellations of thousands of satellites like SpaceX’s Starlink, but the IAU says AST SpaceMobile’s plans raise new issues because of the strong radio waves they will transmit that could interfere with astronomical observations.

Philip Diamond, who directs the the Square Kilometer Array Observatory in South Africa and Australia, worries that orbiting “cell towers” aren’t subject to the same “quiet zone” restrictions that protect radio astronomers from interference by terrestrial cellular networks.

“Astronomers build radio telescopes as far away as possible from human activity, looking for places on the planet where there is limited or no cell phone coverage,” Diamond said. “New satellites such as BlueWalker 3 have the potential to worsen this situation and compromise our ability to do science if not properly mitigated.”

The IAU notes that it has already begun conversations with AST SpaceMobile about potential mitigation measures.

“We are actively working with industry experts on the latest innovations, including next-generation anti-reflective materials,” the company said through a spokesperson.

The company adds it “is committed to avoiding broadcasts inside or adjacent to the National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ) in the US and additional radioastronomy locations that are not officially recognized, as required or needed. We also plan to place gateway antennas far away from the NRQZ and other radio-quiet zones that are important to astronomy.”

AST SpaceMobile CEO Abel Avellan said in a statement earlier this month the goal is to build a constellation that will eliminate mobile dead zones on Earth.

“Every person should have the right to access cellular broadband, regardless of where they live or work. Our goal is to close the connectivity gaps that negatively impact billions of lives around the world.”

Artemis 1 moon rocket blew doors off launch tower elevators

NASA’s powerful new moon rocket damaged its launch pad and blew away elevator doors in the launch tower during its inaugural liftoff last week.

Artemis 1, the first flight of the Artemis program, launched early Wednesday morning (Nov. 16). Nearly 9 million pounds (4 million kg) of thrust took the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket into the final frontier, where it successfully sent an uncrewed Orion spacecraft toward the moon.

While the mission is otherwise nominal, the damage left behind is something NASA is closely looking at to prepare for future missions of the Artemis program, including the next planned one with humans on board: Artemis 2, set to fly around the moon no earlier than 2024.

“The damage that we did see pertains to really, just a couple of areas,” emphasized NASA’s Mike Sarafin, Artemis mission manager, in a press conference with reporters on Monday (Nov. 21).

“It just goes to show,” he added, “that the environment … is not the friendliest when you have the world’s most powerful rocket lifting off.”

In photos: Amazing views of NASA’s Artemis 1 moon rocket debut

Like the space shuttle before it, Artemis 1’s launch used a water suppression system to reduce the amount of damage to the launching deck, which worked as expected. Nevertheless, paint was peeled off the deck of Artemis 1’s launch tower due to the sheer force of the liftoff, Sarafin said.

The elevators for servicing the launch tower fared less well, with photos showing crooked framing around at least one of the two lifts after the doors were ripped away by the shock wave generated by the SLS.

“The elevator system is not functioning right now,” Sarafin explained. “The pressure basically blew the doors off our elevators … right now, the elevators are inoperable, and we need to get those back into service.”

Minor damage was induced to the pneumatic lines associated with gaseous nitrogen and gaseous helium to service the massive SLS tanks, which tricked oxygen sensors on the pad into reading low oxygen levels amid the leaking gas, NASA officials added.

Managers also found two small flight items near the pad that shouldn’t have been there: “throat plug material” expelled from the rocket during liftoff (which happens from time to time with rocket launches), and one piece of RTV (insulating caulking) from the base of the Orion capsule.

It is unclear, however, whether the RTV flew off during launch or came off during Tropical Storm Nicole, which ripped off a strip of caulking prior to the launch; mission managers had determined before launch that the RTV issue would not be a risk.

The damage was minor enough that Sarafin characterized SLS as “a very clean system,” adding that the rocket exceeded its performance targets and that the team will make some changes for Artemis 2.

“This is about being as safe as we can, given the hostile environment that we’re flying into for our astronauts,” he said of the mission planning at large, including the launch phase. “We take this very seriously. Flight safety for our astronauts is paramount.”

Tower of Fantasy update 1.5 brings the Artificial Island, home crafting, and more next week

Tower of Fantasy is getting a large update with its 1.5 patch, bringing an entirely new zone called the Artificial Island and a host of new features to the game, as well as new bosses, characters, weapons, Simulacra, and more.

Announced via Twitter with a video detailing some of the new content, update 1.5 is coming on September 15, a little over a month since the game’s global release. The new Artificial Island zone is front and center for this update, a vast new area for players to explore, gather materials, and fight new enemies. Showcased in the trailer are the Ring Arena, Puddled Lake, and Rusty Iron Camp areas, which are the same verdant yet ruin-strewn plains as the Asperia world of the base game.

There’s also a new boss called the Interdimensional Frostfire Dragon, an enormous, flying mechanical dragon that shoots lasers and missiles from above. Showcased too is the ability to build a home using a base-building system that appears to be a simpler version of the kind found in open world survival and crafting titles.

Not directly mentioned in the trailer but heavily featured is the character Claudia, who is currently available as a Simulacra only on the Chinese servers for Tower of Fantasy. With her shown so prominently in the trailer, she’ll likely be the third limited event banner weapon, following Frigg.

Tower of Fantasy content is liable to come quickly to the global version of the game, as it’s on a much more accelerated schedule than the initial Chinese releases, likely so the two can reach parity before another significant release occurs. With the Vera 2.0 update announcement already out via Gamescom, players won’t need to wait long for dozens and dozens of hours of additional content. There are also almost a dozen additional Simulacra and weapons that did not release in the west, so even if content continues to come out at a fast pace, there are months of updates likely in the works for fans to enjoy.

Bed Bath & Beyond CFO dies after falling from New York’s Jenga tower

Sept 4 (Reuters) – Bed Bath & Beyond Inc’s (BBBY.O) chief financial officer fell to his death from New York’s Tribeca skyscraper known as the “Jenga” tower on Friday afternoon, police said on Sunday, days after the struggling retailer announced it was closing stores and laying off workers.

Gustavo Arnal, 52, joined Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY.O) in 2020. He previously worked as CFO for cosmetics brand Avon in London and had a 20-year stint with Procter & Gamble (PG.N), according to his LinkedIn profile.

On Friday at 12:30 p.m. ET (1630 GMT), police responded to a 911 call and found a 52-year-old man dead near the building who suffered injuries from a fall. Police identified the man as Gustavo Arnal.

The police statement did not provide further details on the circumstances leading to Arnal’s death and said the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office would determine the cause of death. Bed Bath & Beyond confirmed his death in a press statement on Sunday but gave no details.

The big-box chain – once considered a so-called “category killer” in home and bath goods – has seen its fortunes falter after an attempt to sell more of its own brand, or private-label goods.

Last week, Bed Bath & Beyond said it would close 150 stores, cut jobs and overhaul its merchandising strategy in an attempt to turn around its money-losing business.

It forecast a bigger-than-expected 26% slump in same-store sales for the second quarter and said it would retain its buybuy Baby business, which it had put up for sale. read more

Arnal sold 55,013 shares in Bed Bath & Beyond in multiple transactions on Aug. 16-17, Reuters’ calculations showed based on SEC filings. The sales amounted to about $1.4 million, and Arnal still had almost 255,400 shares remaining.

On Aug. 23, the company, Arnal and major shareholder Ryan Cohen were sued over accusations of artificially inflating the firm’s stock price in a “pump and dump” scheme, with the lawsuit alleging Arnal sold off his shares at a higher price after the scheme.

The class action lawsuit listed Arnal as one of the defendants and was brought by a group of shareholders who claimed they lost around $1.2 billion.

The filing in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia alleged that Arnal “agreed to regulate all insider sales by BBBY’s officers and directors to ensure that the market would not be inundated with a large number of BBBY shares at a given time.”

The lawsuit also alleged that he issued materially misleading statements to investors.

The company said it was “in the early stages of evaluating the complaint, but based on current knowledge the company believes the claims are without merit.”

Shares in Bed Bath & Beyond have been highly volatile in recent months, being viewed as a so-called “meme” stock, which trade more on social media sentiment than economic fundamentals.

Cohen, a billionaire investor, disclosed a stake of nearly 10% in early March. Cohen’s RC Ventures disclosed plans to sell its stake on Aug. 17. read more

Tower of Fantasy, a New Free-to-Play Shared Open-World MMORPG, Is Now Available

Tower of Fantasy is a light sci-fi shared open-world MMORPG with cross-play that is now available from the official site, Apple’s App Store, and the Google Play Store. This new action-adventure MMORPG send players to the alien world of Aida and will task them with saving what is left of humankind. But fret not, as Tower of Fantasy includes a deep combat system, the unique Simulacrum system that lets players embody heroes of the past, and a world filled to the brim with treasures waiting to be discovered.

Tower of Fantasy has also announced that four million global pre-registrations have been reached, and more rewards have been added for players to enjoy in-game.

In anticipation of the launch of Tower of Fantasy, we wanted to share six reasons why this is one adventure you and your friends won’t want to miss. Also, players can get 59 free draws max, 1 SSR selector, 1 SSR relic, and 10 limited cosmetics. For more details, please check out the official event page.

A Shared Open-World MMORPG Set in the Far Future

A lack of resources and energy have forced humankind to leave Earth, Aida – a lush and habitable alien world – was decided as the best place to build a new life. After they arrived, the comet Mara was spotted and led to humanity discovering an unknown but powerful energy called Omnium in it. They built Omnium Tower to capture the comet, but Omnium’s radiation led to a catastrophic disaster that changed everything forever. Now, it’s up to you and your friends to save humanity from destruction.

Bring Your Friends With You On This Grand Adventure

Tower of Fantasy can be played solo, but it becomes an even more grand adventure when you bring your friends along for the ride. Gather your crew to take on Tower of Fantasy’s greatest challenges and to show off your characters and the gear and weapons you have acquired throughout your respective journeys.

Freeform Character Customization Lets You Create the Avatar of Your Dreams

One of the aspects of living in a virtual world is creating a character you can call your own. Tower of Fantasy has taken this notion to heart and is giving players an expansive set of tools to craft the Wanderer of their dreams by customizing outfits, body type, skin color, eye shadow and color, and so much more. Tower of Fantasy is a free-to-play adventure that will continue to get updates and expansions, and you’ll be able to experience all it has to offer with a Wanderer that shows the world who you truly are.

A Deep and Flexible Combat System

Tower of Fantasy’s combat will be familiar to anyone who has played a hack-and-slash RPG in the past, but it has many unique aspects to it that will make it feel fresh, exciting, and rewarding. In combat, you will have access to three different weapons, and using one will charge up the other two. When the charge on the other weapons has reached a certain level, you can unleash a devastating discharge attack that can turn the tide of battle. Furthermore, if you can pull off a perfectly timed dodge, you will activate Phantasia, an ability that will not only charge your weapons, but one that will slow the enemies near you.

Gain the Weapons and Abilities of Heroes With the Simulacrum System

One of the most important aspects of the combat system and Tower of Fantasy as a whole is the Simulacrum system. These Simulacrum are described as ancient heroes preserved as AI and can be obtained through the gameplay and by unlocking them using real-world money. These Simulacrum can be equipped by the player and doing so will give them access to their special weapon and abilities. You can also choose to look like them if you want, but those that love their own Wanderer can turn that function off. This system allows you to equip different Simulacrum to your different weapon slots to suit your playstyle, whether that be long-range, close combat, magic, or a mix of all of them.

Explore Tower of Fantasy’s Alien World with Motorcycles, Robotic Horses, Mechs, Jetpacks, and More

Exploration is as big a part of Tower of Fantasy as combat is, and players will have the ability to discover many different areas in the world of Aida. To help with that mission, players will gain access to different mounts like motorcycles, robotic horses, mechs, and more. However, that’s not all, as Relics will also play a huge part in the game and will open up parts of the world that were previously inaccessible. For example, the Jetpack Relic will let you fly higher into the air than before and reach treasures that were just out of reach. The Missile Barrage Relic can break up rock formations to open up caves, and it has the benefit of also being a tool to use in battle.

Publisher Level Infinite and developer Hotta Studio have officially released Tower of Fantasy and players were able to preload the game and enjoy character customization ahead of the opening of the servers.
