Duke pulls out of ACC Tournament, NCAA tourney streak ends

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Duke arrived at the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament hoping to make an unprecedented run to extend its long NCAA Tournament streak.

Instead, the Blue Devils abruptly had to pull out of the tournament and end its season due to a positive COVID-19 test and the resulting quarantining and contact tracing.

The ACC announced that the Blue Devils’ quarterfinal game against No. 15 Florida State for Thursday night has been canceled. And athletics director Kevin White said Duke’s season is over, ending the Blue Devils’ streak of 24 consecutive NCAA appearances that began in 1996.

In a statement, White said the positive test for someone within the program came after Wednesday’s win against Louisville, the Blue Devils’ second win in as many days in Greensboro. Before this, there had been no positive tests all season for a player or coach, he said.

“Since last March when the pandemic started, we have listened to our medical experts and always put safety at the forefront of any determinations regarding competition,” White said. “As a result, this will end our 2020-21 season. We wish every team still playing college basketball good health and the very best during the next few weeks.”

The Blue Devils (13-11, 9-9 ACC) failed to live up to their lofty standards, but coach Mike Krzyzewski said he loved this young team and was honored to coach it.

“We have not asked more of any team in our history, and they deserve enormous credit for handling everything like the outstanding young men they are,” Krzyzewski said in a statement. “I feel deeply for our players, who have done a terrific job all season in taking care of each other and the team.

“I am extremely proud of their collective attitudes and effort, which could not have been stronger.”

With Duke withdrawing, the Seminoles advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinals to play the North Carolina-Virginia Tech winner.

“I just think that preparing yourself for the unexpected is what we’ve been trying to do all year long,” FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said. “It’s unfortunate that we won’t be able to play this game today. But we have to deal with it in a mature way and just be glad that no one’s put at risk.”

Additionally, Louisville released a statement Thursday saying its tests came back negative following the Duke game and didn’t anticipate any concerns with contact tracing.

“Our group is tested daily and on a path to have the requisite consecutive days of negative tests to be able to compete in the NCAA Tournament,” the school said.

With Duke’s season over, this will mark the first time since 1976 that both the Blue Devils and another basketball blueblood — Kentucky — won’t be in the NCAAs. The Wildcats lost their Southeastern Conference Tournament opener to Mississippi State on Thursday, ensuring that program’s first losing season since 1988-89.

Duke hadn’t missed the NCAA Tournament since the 1994-95 season when Krzyzewski stepped away from coaching following complications from back surgery. Assistant Pete Gaudet took over, with that team finishing 13-18 a year after Duke had played in the NCAA title game.

Before that, Krzyzewski had missed the tournament at Duke only in his first three seasons, when he went a combined 38-47 and faced growing pressure to turn things around as Triangle neighbors North Carolina (1982) and North Carolina State (1983) both won NCAA championships.

The first tournament bid came in 1984 and Duke went on to win 37 games while reaching an NCAA final two years later. That was the first in a remarkable run of seven Final Fours in nine years that included championships in 1991 and 1992. Krzyzewski’s teams went on to claim three more titles in 2001, 2010 and 2015.

This year opened with some of the same expectations despite a young roster lacking the same NBA-ready talent of recent years with names like Zion Williamson and Jayson Tatum.

The Blue Devils started the year at No. 9 in the AP Top 25 but was unranked by mid-January for the first time in nearly five years. They lacked the typically rowdy homecourt edge in a fan-less Cameron Indoor Stadium and saw top freshman Jalen Johnson depart the team in February to prepare for the NBA draft.

After a lopsided loss at rival North Carolina, the Blue Devils knew they likely needed to win the ACC Tournament to extend the NCAA streak, even though no team has won five games in five days at the tournament. They opened with a lopsided win against Boston College then beat Louisville in Wednesday’s quarterfinals after losing both regular-season meetings.

All along, Krzyzewski said focused more on developing a young group than past successes.

“This will pay off at some time if you stay with it,” Krzyzewski said after a February loss to Notre Dame. “It did in ’82 and ’83, it did in ’95-96, and it did in 2006. There are times in our program where you learned to appreciate the winning that has come at such a high level and how tough losing is.

“And we as a program need to keep learning that and keep appreciating what it takes to takes to win. You don’t do that by not working hard or trying to get better. And that’s what we’re going to do.”

2021 Big Ten Tournament bracket, schedule: Live scores, updates, dates, live stream for March Madness

Minnesota’s nearly month-long streak of misery finally came to an end on Wednesday as the No. 13 seed Gophers knocked off No. 12 seed Northwestern 51-46 in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament to snap a seven-game losing streak. The Gophers will advance to play No. 5 seed Ohio State in Thursday’s second round as the Buckeyes look to snap a losing streak of their own.

Though still projected as a No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament in Jerry Palm’s Bracketology, Ohio State dropped four straight games against quality foes to end the regular season and will be looking to generate some momentum against the Gophers. Minnesota won the first meeting 77-60 on Jan. 3 behind a 27-point outburst from center Liam Robbins. But Robbins did not play in Wednesday’s win over Northwestern due to a sprained ankle, and he may not be 100% even if he can return Thursday.

Whoever comes out on top on Sunday evening will have withstood a gauntlet as the Big Ten is projected to have nine NCAA Tournament teams, including four teams projected as either No. 1 or No. 2 seeds in Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and Ohio State. Of those four, only the No. 5 seed Buckeyes will be in action Thursday as the other three secured double-byes to Friday’s quarterfinals.

2021 ACC Tournament bracket: Schedule, scores, updates, dates, location, live stream for March Madness

Duke began what it hopes will be a miraculous run in the ACC Tournament on Tuesday by playing some of its best basketball of the season just three days after getting trounced by North Carolina to close the regular season. That loss relegated the Blue Devils to playing in the first round as the No. 10 seed in the conference tournament, and they handled the task with ease by shellacking No. 15 Boston College 86-51.

The win sends Duke on to face No. 7 seed Louisville in Wednesday’s second round. The Blue Devils (12-11) may need to win the ACC Tournament to avoid missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995, and doing so will require winning five games in five days. It will be a tall ask for a team that has not won five consecutive games all season, but Tuesday’s win was a good start as the Blue Devils drilled 15-of-32 3-pointers and forced 20 turnovers by the Eagles.

You don’t have to wait until the field of 68 is announced to fill out your brackets. Play Conference Bracket Challenge presented by Hertz and pick the tournaments for a $10,000 cash prize or start a pool and compete against friends. No purchase necessary, see Rules for details.

The Duke-Boston College game was the second of three games on the first day of the ACC Tournament. The first was far more competitive as No. 13 seed Miami outlasted No. 12 seed Pittsburgh 79-73, advancing to play No. 5 seed Clemson on Wednesday. The last of the three games was the most thrilling of the day, though.

Notre Dame’s chances of going to the NCAA Tournament are virtually nonexistent, but Trey Wertz gave the No. 11 seed Fighting Irish a moment to remember from this postseason when he hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to secure an 80-77 win over No. 14 seed Wake Forest on the first day of the ACC Tournament. Notre Dame closed the game on a 17-2 run to advance to play North Carolina on Tuesday.

College basketball scores, winners and losers: Michigan State wins, Duke loses with NCAA Tournament at stake

Tuesday’s college basketball slate featured a pair of top-10 matchups with No. 2 Michigan facing No. 4 Illinois and No. 3 Baylor facing No. 6 West Virgina, and while those turned out to be interesting games, we already know that all four teams involved will make the NCAA Tournament. That’s why the night’s true intrigue lay in a pair of bubble battles involving blue blood programs.

Duke, which entered as one of the “first four out,” in Jerry Palm’s Bracketology, dropped an 81-77 overtime decision at Georgia Tech. The loss is the second in a row for the Blue Devils, who are headed for another bubble battle on Saturday at rival North Carolina in the regular-season finale for both. Crushing as the defeat was for Duke, it was just as big of a victory for Georgia Tech, which snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Blue Devils dating back to 2010.

The Yellow Jackets are trying to make their first NCAA Tournament since 2010, and senior forward Moses Wright is doing everything can to make sure it happens. The 6-foot-10 Raleigh, North Carolina native continued his recent tear with a 29-point, 14-rebound performance. Wright is now averaging 24.8 points per game over Tech’s five-game winning streak.

Michigan State’s Aaron Henry was the hero of the night’s other bubble battle as the Spartans outlasted Indiana 64-58. The Spartans entered as a projected No. 11 seed, according to Palm, while the Hoosiers entered as a bubble team on the outside looking in. Let’s dive in to more from those games and the winners and losers from around the sport on a busy Tuesday night.

Loser: Struggling stars

Duke’s leading scorer Matthew Hurt fouled out with 6:14 left of the Blue Devils’ loss to Georgia Tech. It was the second straight game that Hurt has fouled out of — both losses for the Blue Devils. Hurt has finished with four or five fouls in nine of 21 games he’s played this season, which seems like a lot of foul trouble for a player who is not regularly bruising in the post on defense. He finished with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting but missed the most important moments of the game.

Indiana’s star Trayce Jackson-Davis has been phenomenal this season but turned in a dud as the Hoosiers lost their fourth straight. He made just 1-of-5 shots from the field and finished with nine points and four fouls, which limited him to 27 minutes. It’s the first time all season Jackson-Davis has failed to reach double figures, and the 27 minutes tied a season-low in a game when the Hoosiers desperately needed him to be at his best.

Winner: Alabama wins the Iron Basket

No. 8 Alabama had won four of its past five games entering Tuesday’s rivalry contest with Auburn. But the last two were a bit worrisome as the Crimson Tide lost by 15 at Arkansas and then struggled Saturday to squeak out a win over a mediocre Mississippi State team. It looked for a while against Auburn as if the spurt of sluggishness might continue as the Tigers hung with Alabama until midway through the second half. That’s when the Crimson Tide showed why they are the SEC champions and a projected No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. A 3-pointer from John Petty Jr. sparked a 10-0 run that helped the Crimson Tide pull away for a 70-58 win. Now 20-6 (15-2 SEC) Alabama has reached the 20-win mark for just the second time in the past eight years and cut down the nets to commemorate the SEC title it secured on Saturday.

Loser: When Michigan falls, it falls hard

Michigan’s two losses this season have come by a combined 41 points after No. 4 Illinois smacked the No. 3 Wolverines 76-53 on Tuesday. Losing to Illinois is not shameful, but losing to it by 23 points at home while the Illini are without star guard Ayo Dosunmu? That’s concerning. The Wolverines had won seven straight before Tuesday night and remain on the projected No. 1 seed line, according to CBS Sports Bracketology Expert Jerry Palm. Still, with games against rival Michigan State on Thursday and Sunday all that’s remaining on Michigan’s regular-season schedule, it’s worth wondering if some issues that were exposed against Illinois might linger into the postseason.

Winner: Illinois as a potential No. 1 seed

The Illini, on the other hand, come away looking great. Illinois has won 10 of its last 11 games and is thriving under the adversity of playing without Dosunmu. This team has emerged as the fourth projected No. 1 seed in Palm’s bracketology, and the performance against Michigan only solidified its position there heading into Saturday’s regular-season finale at No. 7 Ohio State.

Loser: Wisconsin is reeling

Wisconsin hit its stride at this time last season, winning eight straight games to close the regular season as co-champions of the Big Ten. The returning production from that team is why the Badgers began the season ranked No. 7 in the AP poll and rose as high as No. 4 early in the season. But the lessons learned from last year’s stretch run are not translating to this year’s team. No. 23 Wisconsin has now lost four of its last five games after Tuesday night’s 73-69 loss at No. 23 Purdue. The Badgers (16-10, 10-9 Big Ten) entered the night as a projected No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will be fine on Selection Sunday, but the late-season struggles of a senior-laden roster are confounding.

Winner: Baylor is back

In its first two games back following a three-week break due to COVID-19 protocols, No. 3 Baylor simply did not look like the team that emerged as a serious national title contender during an undefeated start. Well, the Bears got their mojo back Tuesday in a 94-89 overtime win at No. 6 West Virginia, even if the defense was a bit lacking at times. Baylor finally started fast again and also enjoyed its best 3-point shooting performance since the restart. The Bears also got welcome contribution off the bench after the Baylor reserves provided just five total points in the Kansas loss, Matthew Mayer provided 18 himself on Tuesday, including 15 in the second half after West Virginia surged ahead 50-43.

Loser: Xavier’s sense of security after a loss to Georgetown

Xavier tried its best to mount an epic second half comeback to erase a 19-point deficit and avoid an embarrassing loss to Georgetown. But in the end, the Musketeers came up short, falling 72-66 to the Hoyas in a game they will wish they had back. Xavier (13-6, 6-6 Big East) has now lost four of its last six games after an 11-2 start. The Musketeers entered Tuesday’s action as a projected No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament, according to Palm. But don’t be surprised if Xavier shows up on the bubble entering what feels like a must-win regular-season finale at Marquette on Saturday.

Loser: Kentucky’s offense is bad again

Kentucky reached 70 points in six straight games during February and won three straight at one point as it seemed the Wildcats were finally figuring things out. Not so fast. UK is on yet another losing streak after Tuesday’s 70-62 loss at Ole Miss. The Wildcats (8-15, 7-9 SEC) shot just 37.5% from the floor, 25% from 3-point range and made just 15-of-25 free throws. Those offensive struggles? They haven’t been cured entirely. It’s too bad Ole Miss lost at Vanderbilt on Saturday, because otherwise this would have been a nice bubble win for the Rebels (14-10, 9-8). But with just a rematch against the Commodores remaining on their regular-season slate, it doesn’t look like an at-large bid is in the cards for coach Kermit Davis’ squad.

Winner: Arkansas keeps destroying people

Arkansas’ offense has been good this season, but it had only reached 100 points once until it thrashed South Carolina 101-73 on Tuesday. The Razorbacks’ previous high of 100 came against Central Arkansas came back in December, but to reach the century mark against a league foe shows just how well Arkansas is playing. The Razorbacks are now 20-5 (12-4 SEC) and have won 10 straight SEC games. Three players surpassed 20 points against the Gamecocks, led by Moses Moody. The freshman wing poured in 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting and may be running away with the race for SEC Freshman of the Year.

Loser: Wake Forest is depressingly bad

The Demon Deacons are making programs that didn’t make coaching changes last offseason look smart. Wake Forest fired Danny Manning and replaced him with Steve Forbes amid the pandemic. To put it mildly, it’s been a struggle this year, and it only got worse on Tuesday in a 70-57 loss to Pittsburgh. Wake Forest (6-14, 3-14 ACC) has now lost six ACC games in a row for the second time this season and have lost five straight games by double-digits. The frustrating part about Tuesday’s loss is that it came against a Pittsburgh (10-10, 6-9) team that had lost five straight.

As Palm noted in Tuesday’s Bubble Watch, nothing good could come from Boise State’s regular season finale on Tuesday against a Fresno State team ranked No. 202 in the NET. Ultimately, something disastrous occurred for the Broncos, who lost 67-64 after entering as one of Palm’s “last four in.” Boise State had been 13-0 in games against Quad 3 and 4 competition. But the loss to Fresno State will count as a crushing Quad 4 defeat.

Pro beach volleyball players back out of Qatar tournament over bikini attire

German professional beach volleyball stars Karla Borger and Julia Sude said Sunday they will not be going to Qatar for a tournament over an issue involving their playing attire.

Borger represented Germany in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro but lost, along with teammate Britta Buthe, in the round of 16. The pair won silver at the Beach Volleyball World Championships in 2013. Sude had partnered mostly with Chantal Labouruer during her career. Sude and Borger have been teammates since 2019.

“We are there to do our job, but are being prevented from wearing our work clothes,” Borger told a German radio station. “This is really the only country and the only tournament where a government tells us how to do our job – we are criticizing that.”

Borger added that given the extreme temperatures in the Middle East, “We are asking whether it’s necessary to hold a tournament there at all.”

The women’s portion of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Tour will head to Doha, Qatar, for the first time next month. Female players have been asked to wear long shirts and trousers for the event, according to The Guardian.

The FIVB says the request was “out of respect for the culture and traditions of the host country,” according to The Guardian.

Borger and Sude both told Germany’s Der Spiegel they would “not go along” with the Qatari rules. The country’s weather would make bikinis necessary for playing in the tournament.

Sude also pointed out that changes were not made when the country hosted the World Athletics Championships in 2019.

The Qatar Volleyball Association said athletes were allowed to wear their national uniforms, according to Yahoo.

“We would like to make clear that we are not making any demand on what athletes should wear at the event,” the organization said.

The country allowed female volleyball players to compete in bikinis as recently as the 2019 ANOC World Beach Games and the 2006 Asian Games, according to The Daily Mail.

Skull Session: If the Big Ten Tournament Started Today, Ohio State’s National Title Odds Improve, and Baron Browning is Versatile

Losing ain’t fun, but I need to offer my sincerest contrast to Michigan for accomplishing something it hasn’t done in almost two decades.

Maybe they should just shutter their football program?

Word of the Day: Emaciated.

IF THE TOURNAMENT STARTED TODAY… We’re getting close enough to the Big Ten Tournament that we can start dreaming. And you can sign me the hell up for this:

I’ll be stoked if Ohio State and Michigan are on opposite ends of the bathroom setting up a potential title game showdown, because I was ready to run that back as soon as Sunday’s game ended.

This time, we just need to keep Michigan from shooting 80 percent from three for an entire half, and then also make more than 50 percent of our layups. All totally doable things!

HIGHEST CEILING IN THE DRAFT. If the pre-draft buzz is any indication, it would seem that Baron Browning is about to make himself quite a bit of money in these next few months.

I’m afraid I’m going to feel the same “why the hell did we not use him like this in college?” feelings towards Baron Browning as I do with former third-team All-Big Ten receiver Michael Thomas.

But hey, if that happens, it means Baron’s balling out in The League, and I’ll gladly take on a little remorse in that case.

PROVED THEMSELVES. The Buckeyes may have lost yesterday, but it seems they’ve earned themselves a few believers with their performance because their national title odds actually improved.

Ohio State entered the weekend with +1200 odds to win the national title, but after Sunday afternoon’s 92-87 loss to Michigan in an absolutely incredible back-and-forth game, Ohio State now has +1100 odds to win the NCAA Tournament – the fourth-best odds in the country with all odds coming courtesy of Bovada.lv.

That tells me that even though Ohio State didn’t get the win on Sunday, they accomplished the mission of proving they belong on can hang with anybody in the country.

HOT MIC MOMENT. Lesson: always check your microphone before screaming profanities to everyone within earshot.

(NSFW audio ahead, just FYI)

Can the ref throw an unsportsmanlike conduct flag on himself? How does that work?

SONG OF THE DAY. “Redbone” by Lando Calrissian

NOT STICKING TO SPORTS. I tracked down the girls who bullied me as a kid and here is what they had to say… The beach bum who beat Wall Street and made millions on GameStop… A customer received a bottle of urine in a HelloFresh delivery… Federal agents seize $2.82 million worth of cocaine-coated corn flakes… Why I’ll always drop everything to answer my brother’s calls from prison… The soothing digital rooms of YouTube…

As the NCAA Tournament looms ahead, Michigan vs. Ohio State arrived at perfect time for college basketball

Michigan-Ohio State is just what college basketball needed.

Arguably the most anticipated game of the regular season eclipsed the hype, offering more compelling play and interest in the schools’ rivalry than football has been able to provide for most of the past decade. A bonus: this was the first top-five college hoops matchup between the programs in their history. Third-ranked Michigan got, from a résumé standpoint, what could be the most accomplished road victory this season with a 92-87 win over No. 4 OSU.

It was as entertaining and provocative a game between two ranked teams that we’ve seen in the past three months.

This has been a rocky season — as predicted — in college basketball. Each week 40-80 games are postponed or canceled. High-end teams like Gonzaga, Baylor, Michigan, Villanova and Florida State have gone on weeks-long pauses. You never want your best teams out of sight (thus out of mind), but that’s how it’s been for much of the past three months. Sure, it’s been a joy to have college basketball at all, even with the problems that come with hosting a season amid a pandemic, but it’s fair to say the sport has lacked some juice as it’s staggered along after losing the 2020 NCAA Tournament.

All of that seemed to vanish in two hours on Sunday when a national audience tuned in order to tune up for March. A top-five tilt gilded by two of the biggest college athletic brands wound up providing a high-octane, can’t-turn-away outcome. Chef’s-kiss delectable.

This was the third time in the past three months college basketball was gifted a game between two top-five teams. On Dec. 2, No. 2 Baylor coasted past No. 5 Illinois 82-69. Seventeen days later, top-ranked Gonzaga let No. 3 Iowa linger, but it was a 99-88 finish in favor of the still-unbeaten Bulldogs.

Michigan-Ohio State brought what those two games didn’t — a home-court element — in addition to the backdrop of both teams being projected No. 1 seeds.

A lack of fans didn’t suck the drama or viewing experience out of this one. It was a title-level competition. Michigan finished the game at a fiery 1.37 points per possession. (OSU finished just behind at 1.30.) For diehards of the sport, Michigan center Hunter Dickinson was no secret. He’s consistently been rated in the top five of CBS Sports’ Frosh Watch. But for a broader audience, today was something of an extended introduction. Though Ohio State had some missed second chances and two bad turnovers down the stretch, in the end, one team having the 7-footer (who looks like the guy from “Empire Records”) and the other team not having him seemed the difference. Dickinson had 22 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and at least four easy buckets against an OSU team that doesn’t have a player taller than 6-8.

“The difficult thing with them is they shoot it well from a variety of spots,” OSU coach Chris Holtmann told CBS Sports. “And Dickinson is a load.”

The teams combined to make 22 3-pointers and shot 49% from beyond the arc, in addition to Michigan making 57% of its 2-point shots and Ohio State 55% of its attempts inside the 3-point line. Offense, offense, offense — and not on account of poor defense.

Along the way, we got a wonderful potential Final Four preview. Both these teams are obviously good enough to make a run to the final weekend. What Michigan has managed to do after a 23-day pause is almost jaw-dropping. A week ago the Wolverines outscored Wisconsin 40-20 in the second half, shook off any flakes of rust in the process and won on the road. Thursday brought a workmanlike, never-in-doubt home W over Rutgers. Sunday was the best yet. U-M opened with an absurd 10-of-13 first-half shooting performance from beyond the arc. It finished 11-of-23, providing flashbacks of some of John Beilein’s best teams in the process.

Might this group be better than his 2013 or 2018 Final Four teams? At this point, that is on the table. Holtmann told me you can see some of Howard’s NBA influence in the way Michigan runs some of its offensive sets, and it’s what makes this team well-rounded.

Michigan legend Juwan Howard has his team playing at the highest level in just his second season.
Getty Images

“I think what’s so impressive about them is you can just tell they have really taken on his personality,” Holtmann said. “Competitive, smart, tough-minded. I put this team on the same level, just about, as the really good Beilein teams and it’s impressive to see him do this [in his second season].”

In two seasons’ time, Howard has done what Beilein only pulled off once in 11 years: win at Ohio State. This was the Wolverines’ first win in Columbus in seven years and just their second since 2005. Michigan’s now 11-1 in the Big Ten, its best start in league play since 1976-77. Juwan Howard was 4 years old then.

The Big Ten is obviously going to have at least one of its teams earn a No. 1 seed. That will mark the first time since 2015 (Wisconsin) that the league’s been able to find the top line on Selection Sunday. Michigan is not yet a lock to be a No. 1 (games against No. 11 Iowa, No. 5 Illinois and the Big Ten Tournament all await), but it’s as close as it could possibly be to lock status on Feb. 21.

“They’re a complete team,” Holtmann said. “That’s why everyone’s so high on them and rightfully so.”

It’s one of the best stories in college hoops. There was a time recently when a job came open at Michigan. There was a man who, behind the scenes, pushed to be hired. He was a well-known man, an alumnus and someone who found success as a pro in both his playing and coaching career. Could a return to college work? That didn’t matter to fans at first because they were overjoyed at the prospect of having a beloved face back on campus, to have someone that’s tasted serious success at the highest levels opt to coach Michigan again. Even better: to beat Ohio State.

No, not Jim Harbaugh. Another JH: Juwan Howard. The University of Michigan’s men’s basketball team is dominant, relevant and rolling in ways that its football program can only imagine at this point.
