49ers expect Brock Purdy to miss six months with torn UCL in throwing elbow

Getty Images

The injury suffered by 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy during the NFC Championship Game was a serious one.

Purdy has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will likely be sidelined for about six months, according to multiple reports.

That timeline would have Purdy back before the start of the 2023 preseason, but it will definitely affect the 49ers’ quarterback plans. After the way he played during the regular season, Purdy appeared poised to start for the 49ers next season. Now he’ll be out of the offseason program, which may open the door to Trey Lance — or to the 49ers acquiring another quarterback.

The last pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Purdy had an outstanding rookie season after both Lance and backup Jimmy Garoppolo were lost to injuries. On the basis of his rookie year he appears to have a bright future, but he now has a long rehab ahead of him.

Bucs LB Shaquil Barrett out for season with torn Achilles, source says

TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Bay Buccaneers outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett will miss the rest of the 2022 season after suffering a torn Achilles, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday.

An MRI on Friday confirmed the Achilles tear, with the source saying Barrett is expected to be out seven to nine months.

Barrett was injured on a third-and-1 run play during the third quarter of Thursday’s 27-22 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. After being attended to by athletic trainers, Barrett came off the field while barely putting any weight on his lower left leg and was carted off to the locker room once on the sideline.

The 29-year-old had three sacks in eight games this season, his fourth in Tampa Bay, but Thursday night might have been one of his best performances of the season — with a sack, three tackles for a loss, four combined tackles and a 21.1% pressure rate prior to leaving the game.

The Buccaneers surrendered three touchdowns after Barrett left the game in the third quarter. He was replaced by Anthony Nelson, who had five sacks last season.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Barrett has been the Buccaneers’ top edge rusher since his breakout season in 2019, when he led the NFL with an astounding 19.5 sacks. Barrett’s 40.5 sacks are the fourth most of any defensive player since 2019, just behind Aaron Donald, as are his 12 forced fumbles.

Barrett’s injury couldn’t come at a worse time for Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers have dropped five out of their past six games and have fallen to a 3-5 record. Their once-top-ranked run defense has given up 632 rushing yards over the past four weeks — the most in the NFL — and the unit has struggled to pressure opposing quarterbacks.

Next week, the Bucs face the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams, whom they have lost to three times since 2020, including a 30-27 loss in January that knocked the Buccaneers out of the postseason.

Jets acquire James Robinson from Jaguars via trade after Breece Hall suffers torn ACL

Breece Hall is out for the season after suffering a torn ACL in the Jets’ Week 7 win over the Broncos. One day later, New York has found a notable replacement for its star running back, acquiring James Robinson from the Jaguars in exchange for a future sixth-round draft pick, according to NFL Media and confirmed by CBS Sports NFL insider Josina Anderson. Robinson made a speedy return from his own serious injury to open 2022 in Jacksonville’s backfield, but Travis Etienne Jr. has emerged as the Jaguars’ lead ball-carrier in recent weeks.

The sixth-round pick acquired by the Jaguars can become a fifth-rounder depending on Robinson’s performance as New York’s presumptive RB1. Michael Carter was previously slated to take over as the Jets’ top back after Hall was carted off Sunday’s win and quickly ruled out. Now, Gang Green will have the 24-year-old Robinson not only for the remainder of 2022 but possibly beyond. As CBS Sports contributor Joel Corry notes, the Jets can eventually extend the veteran on a restricted free agent tender through 2023.

Robinson is two years removed from a 1,000-yard rushing campaign as a rookie. The former undrafted standout was off to a similarly productive start in 2021 before suffering a torn Achilles in Week 16. This year, splitting touches with Etienne, he wasn’t nearly as efficient, averaging less than four yards per carry in three different games, before taking zero carries in Week 6. Etienne, meanwhile, a 2021 first-round pick by Jacksonville, has emerged as one of the club’s top offensive play-makers as of late.

In New York, Hall quickly made a name for himself as one of this year’s top rookies, powering the Jets’ ground game with 463 rushing yards in seven games. Considering he faces a potentially long road to recovery following his ACL tear, it’s possible Robinson could also serve as the team’s starting ball-carrier, or at least split carries, to open 2023 as well.

Fantasy take

How James Robinson trade affects Michael Carter

From CBS Sports Fantasy analyst Dave Richard: When you think about the past year-plus for Carter — his inability to cement a large role in the Jets offense as a rookie, watching his team draft a stud rookie in April and then trade for a good veteran power back to replace the stud rookie — it’s tough to see him evolving into a serious Fantasy asset. That would change if he could start commanding targets on a week-to-week basis, but the Jets offense doesn’t call for a lot of throws to the running back, and quarterback Zach Wilson has a tendency to look downfield, not throw short.

Carter has also gotten off to a pretty blah start. His rushing average sits at 3.5, his rush attempts per game is at a smallish 9.4 and his receiving numbers have all but dried up since Wilson has taken over at quarterback. His only highlight was scoring twice in a blowout win versus Miami in Week 5.

Carter is obviously worth rostering but isn’t likely to be any better than a No. 3 running back for however long Robinson makes an impact. He should still be on the hook for at least 10 touches per week and roughly 40% of the snaps with the Jets, but it’s unlikely he’ll be used regularly in high-value situations like near the goal line.

Jets rookie RB Breece Hall suffered torn ACL in win over Broncos

Breece Hall’s promising rookie season is over after he suffered a torn ACL in the Jets’ 16-9 win on Sunday over the Broncos, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Monday.

Hall exited the Jets’ Week 7 game in Denver due to the knee injury and was taken to the locker room on a cart. An MRI confirmed Hall’s torn ACL and a meniscus injury, Rapoport added, which will end Hall’s first year after just seven games.

The rookie RB suffered the injury late in the first half of Sunday’s game, but made a difference prior to exiting. His 62-yard run stood as the only touchdown on the day for the Jets, giving New York a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Hall left the game after four rushes for 72 yards and the aforementioned score, bringing his season totals to 80 rushes for 463 yards and four touchdowns. The rookie averaged 5.8 yards per carry, helping the Jets to a 5-2 start to the 2022 season and building a strong case for Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in the process.

Unfortunately, that’s where Hall will finish statistically. The rest of New York’s exciting group of young contributors — including second-year running back Michael Carter, who will take over starting duties in place of Hall — will have to forge ahead without him.

Baltimore Ravens CB Kyle Fuller out for season with torn ACL

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Kyle Fuller is out for the season after an MRI revealed Monday that he tore his left ACL.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh called the injury “a crazy circumstance on AstroTurf.” Fuller, a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback, was hurt covering Elijah Moore with 1:18 left in Baltimore’s 24-9 win over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

“He got pushed off and just landed the wrong way,” Harbaugh said. “And the turf doesn’t usually give as much as grass. So that’s what happened.”

Fuller, 30, was playing in his first game for his hometown team. Ravens officials initially thought Sunday there was a chance that Fuller’s injury wasn’t serious, but tests Monday confirmed the ligament tear. Fuller signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with Baltimore this offseason.

Brandon Stephens, a second-year defensive back, will fill in as a starting cornerback until Marcus Peters is ready. Peters is coming off a season-ending ACL and was inactive Sunday.

Before the Sunday game, Peters was spotted running the stairs of MetLife Stadium.

Asked how close Peters was to playing, Harbaugh said, “I don’t have the measurement on that.”

In recent years, the Ravens have had trouble keeping their cornerbacks healthy. Last year, Baltimore had four cornerbacks finish the season on injured reserve.

In addition to Fuller, the Ravens also lost left tackle Ja’Wuan James for the season in the opener Sunday. He tore his left Achilles tendon late in the second quarter.

Patrick Mekari will replace James at left tackle until Ronnie Stanley (ankle) is ready to play.

Pittsburgh Steelers believe T.J. Watt suffered torn pec as he, Najee Harris leave OT win against Cincinnati Bengals with injuries

The Pittsburgh Steelers believe star pass-rusher and reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt suffered a torn pectoral during Sunday’s 23-20 overtime win against the Bengals in Cincinnati, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Watt is scheduled to undergo scans Monday to confirm the diagnosis, the source said.

The Steelers didn’t provide any additional details postgame, with coach Mike Tomlin only saying that Watt was being evaluated for an upper-body injury.

Both Watt and running back Najee Harris (foot) exited with injuries in the fourth quarter and were ruled out.

Harris suffered a foot injury as the Steelers attempted to run out the clock, and he limped off the field. He was dealing with a Lisfranc sprain in his foot during training camp, but he said earlier this week he was healthy.

Watt came off the field a couple of plays later with his injury and went straight to the locker room.

“Having TJ out there definitely benefits us. He’s a leader. He’s the Defensive Player of the Year,” teammate Cameron Heyward said. “However long it takes, other guys gotta step up. Alex (Highsmith) stepped up pretty good today. Malik (Reed) and Jamir (Jones) are coming along. We had to do some different stuff out there, but we rally around him. And when he gets back, we’ll be ready.”

After the game, Harris was spotted wearing a protective boot as he left the locker room. Beyond the second-year player, the Steelers have a relatively thin and inexperienced running back room. Rookie undrafted free agent Jaylen Warren took the bulk of the snaps when Harris went down, and 2019 fourth-round pick Benny Snell is also an option. He had only 36 carries last season for 98 yards, but the Kentucky product started in place of James Conner five times in 2019 and 2020.

The Steelers also have 2020 fourth-round pick Anthony McFarland on the practice squad.

The positional depth behind Watt is also thin.

Highsmith started every game at right outside linebacker opposite of Watt last season. The Steelers added Reed via trade with the Denver Broncos earlier this month. He started 13 games for the Broncos in each of the past two seasons. The team also picked up Jones on waivers, bringing him back to Pittsburgh after he saw action in three games with the Steelers last season.

“Praying that everything’s going to be all right,” Highsmith said of Watt. “I know a guy like him, that’s gonna hurt him that he’s not out there because he loves football so much. We’re just going to rally around him. We’ve got the guys to just be able to step in and deliver if he’s not able to go.”

Boston Celtics’ Danilo Gallinari diagnosed with torn ACL; source says forward eyeing late-season return

Boston forward Danilo Gallinari suffered a torn ACL in his left knee while playing for the Italian national team, the Celtics announced Friday, an injury that could cause him to miss the entire 2022-23 NBA season.

Gallinari previously tore the same ACL in April 2013 and missed the entire 2013-14 season after undergoing a pair of surgeries. The typical recovery time for an ACL tear is six to 12 months, and a source told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that Gallinari is determined to try and return at some point late in the 2022-23 season.

The 34-year-old Gallinari was injured Saturday during a FIBA World Cup qualifying game against Georgia. He grabbed his left knee after a bounce pass in the lane before hobbling over to the sideline, holding the back of the knee as trainers rushed to his aid. Gallinari then limped to the locker room with the help of a staff member and a teammate.

The Italian team had announced that Gallinari suffered a torn meniscus.

Gallinari signed a two-year, $13.2 million contract — including a player option for the second season — with the Celtics as a free agent last month. The sharpshooting forward, who averaged 11.7 points and shot 38.1% from 3-point range across 66 games for the Hawks last season, was brought in — alongside Malcolm Brogdon, whom Boston acquired in a trade with the Indiana Pacers in July — to bolster the Celtics’ depth and give them some additional offensive punch after the Eastern Conference champions saw their offense struggle at times in their NBA Finals loss to the Golden State Warriors. Gallinari has never played in the Finals over his 13 NBA seasons.

Long considered one of the NBA’s elite-shooting big men, Gallinari is a career 38.2% 3-point shooter, and his 1,426 career 3-pointers ranks 23rd among active players and third — behind Kevin Durant and Kevin Love — among players 6-foot-10 or taller.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the Celtics will be able to apply for a designated player exception to replace Gallinari. That will give the Celtics $3.2 million to either sign, trade for or claim a player on an expiring contract worth up to that amount.

Including Al Horford’s nearly fully guaranteed deal, Boston has 11 guaranteed contracts on its roster along with several players with nonguaranteed or partially guaranteed deals expected to fight for roster spots in training camp.

Report: Tyron Smith could miss multiple months with torn hamstring

Getty Images

The Cowboys may have lost one of their best players for a significant period of time.

Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith suffered a torn left hamstring in Wednesday’s practice and could miss multiple months of the 2022 season, according to ESPN.

Smith went down during practice with what first appeared to be a knee injury, and when tests showed no damage to Smith’s ACL, it seemed to be good news.

But additional testing found that Smith’s hamstring is torn, and now he’s set for more testing on Thursday to determine the severity of the hamstring tear.

Without Smith, the Cowboys are missing a big part of their offensive line. Rookie first-round draft pick Tyler Smith played left tackle in college and might be called upon to do it now for the Cowboys, but prior to Tyron Smith’s injury, the Cowboys wanted Tyler Smith to play guard as a rookie. Josh Ball, a 2021 fourth-round pick who didn’t play at all as a rookie, and Matt Waletzko, a 2022 fifth-round pick, would be other options to replace Smith at left tackle.

The Cowboys selected Tyron Smith in the first round of the 2011 draft, and he’s been in Dallas longer than any other player on the roster. When healthy he has been among the best offensive linemen in the NFL.

New York Giants lose promising WR Collin Johnson to torn Achilles

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants lost wide receiver Collin Johnson for the season Wednesday on the same day that veteran Sterling Shepard returned to the practice field.

Johnson tore his Achilles tendon during Wednesday’s practice, per the team. The big receiver (6-foot-6, 220 pounds) out of the University of Texas had been receiving first-team reps in recent weeks at practice with Kadarius Toney and Shepard among those on the sideline.

Coach Brian Daboll had noted earlier in the week that Johnson and fellow wide receiver David Sills were making a strong impression. Johnson started Sunday’s preseason win over the Cincinnati Bengals and had three receptions for 41 yards; Sills had five catches for 56 yards, with most of the damage coming with the first-string offense.

“Collin Johnson, David Sills, they’ve stepped their game up,” Daboll said. “And they’re right in the mix, not just to make a team but to play.”

The Giants’ opener is in 18 days in Tennessee. Toney (right leg), C.J. Board (ribs) and Darius Slayton are also dealing with minor injuries.

Shepard, meanwhile, was making his way back from a torn Achilles suffered last December. He returned to practice for the first time Wednesday since the injury.

“It felt great, man,” said Shepard, who snuck in some reps during live drills and even caught a 20-yard pass from backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor. “Just being back on the field, it’s a blessing. Especially when you go through an injury like that and you’ve been on the sidelines for so long watching those guys get after it. You have to take every day and cherish them because you never know when you’re going to have to sit out that long.”

It had been eight months and five days since Shepard tore his Achilles. He is the longest-tenured Giant and has 349 catches for 3,884 yards and 21 touchdowns in his career, all in New York.

Shepard’s return made it appear as if the Giants were actually getting healthier at the position. Toney, Board and Slayton participated in the early portions of Wednesday’s practice.

But Toney was seen grabbing at the back of his leg during the workout, and Johnson and Marcus Kemp (hamstring) suffered significant injuries. Both Johnson and Kemp landed on injured reserve later in the day.

The Giants claimed wide receivers Bailey Gaither and Jaylon Moore on Wednesday to fill the voids. They cut tight end Jordan Akins to make room on the roster.

Johnson, 24, has 29 catches for 377 yards in 26 career games with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Giants. He made his mark with the Giants last year as a blocker.

But this summer it appeared he had taken his game to the next level. He was making plays consistently throughout training camp, earning him the trust of starting quarterback Daniel Jones and some first-team reps.

Johnson even had 10 catches for 123 receiving yards in the first two preseason games this season. With Toney still banged up and Shepard coming back from a serious injury, it looked possible that Johnson could have started — or at least played a substantial role — Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans. Instead his season came to a premature end.
