“I think about 40% of the people still don’t think we won”: Tom Brady, Buccaneers visit White House to celebrate Super Bowl win

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday visited the White House in celebration of their 2020 Super Bowl win. The visit was spent cracking jokes with President Joe Biden and encouraging more people to get the COVID-19 vaccination.

“I hope you all know just how important it was for, after such a tough year for the nation, in the middle of a long, dark winter, every Sunday, people were able to sit down and watch you play,” Mr. Biden said. “You created memories that helped folks make it through and believe that we could get back to normal again. And you did it as a team, trailblazing, including the first team with two women in full-time coaching positions.”

In February, the Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 to clinch the Super Bowl LV victory. The win gave quarterback Tom Brady —  who had spent the previous 20 seasons with the New England Patriots — his seventh championship, adding to his record of the most Super Bowl wins by any football player. Tuesday’s visit marked Brady’s first White House celebration since 2005, when he and the Patriots won three titles in four years.

Mr. Biden called Tampa Bay a city of “champions,” and pointed to the team’s incredible rise from the middle of the pack during the regular season to Super Bowl champions, saying that the team proved it was never too late to accomplish extraordinary things.

Mr. Biden also highlighted the team’s philanthropic endeavors, including donating millions of meals to those experiencing food insecurity and using their stadium as a voting station and vaccination center, where nearly 200,000 COVID-19 vaccines have been administered.

Per tradition, the Buccaneers presented Mr. Biden with a commemorative jersey with “Biden” emblazoned on the back with the number 46.

Brady exchanged several jokes with Mr. Biden about the team’s unlikely journey, including cracks about Americans who falsely believe Mr. Biden did not win the presidential election.

“Not a lot of people think that we could have won. And in fact, I think about 40% of the people still don’t think we won,” said Brady, which was accompanied by laughter.

“I understand that,” Mr. Biden added with a grin.

Brady also recalled a gaffe of his own which led to the Bucs losing a regular-season game and the three-time MVP being given a nickname that mirrored the “Sleepy Joe” moniker used by former President Donald Trump against Mr. Biden during the 2020 campaign.

“We had a game in Chicago where I forgot what down it was,” Brady said. “I lost track of one down in 21 years of playing, and they started calling me ‘Sleepy Tom.’ Why would they do that to me?”

Tom Brady won’t be welcomed in return

Patriots defensive tackle Byron Cowart won’t be rolling out the red carpet when Tom Brady makes his much-anticipated return to New England in October.

“We ain’t welcoming him, we just got to play him. There ain’t going to be no damn ceremony for him or nothing like that,” Cowart, who was a rookie during Brady’s last season with the Patriots, recently said on the “Patriots of Life” podcast. “(Fans) might clap for him, but… bro, this is our opponent. Bro, what? We like to win.”

There probably will be a ceremony for Brady, a future Hall of Famer who led the Patriots to six Super Bowls in 20 seasons before leaving for Tampa in 2020 and winning a championship with the Buccaneers.

“We should have a fun night,” Patriots owner Rob Kraft told TMZ in May of Brady’s homecoming. “Excited to have him. He’s a great guy and he did so much for us. I love him.”

It won’t be cheap for Patriots fans to welcome Brady back to Gillette Stadium for the primetime Week Four matchup, with tickets listed for as much as $8,000 on the secondary market.

Report — Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady played entire season with torn MCL

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady played the entirety of last season with a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee, according to a report in the Tampa Bay Times.

Brady suffered the injury in his final season with the New England Patriots and it gradually worsened during his first year in Tampa, according to the report.

Brady, who was was not listed on the injury report all season, underwent surgery to repair the knee in late February after leading the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory at age 43.

Brady has not discussed specifics about the surgery, saying only it was “pretty serious.”

Brady suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the same knee during Week 1 of the 2008 season.

Buccaneers quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen said in June he believed Brady’s knee injury last season was a “nagging nuisance” that affected him all season.

“I don’t think he was 100 percent last year,” Christensen said, relaying a conversation he had with Brady the morning after the Bucs won Super Bowl LV. “His quote, or close to a quote was, ‘Hey, I’m gonna get my knee fixed up and I’m gonna be better next year and you’re gonna be excited about that.'”

Brady wore a brace on his left knee during the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl boat parade. But wearing the brace is not uncommon for the 43-year-old Brady, who also wears it when golfing and during other recreational activities.

The seven-time Super Bowl winner was named Super Bowl MVP for the fifth time in his career after passing for 201 yards and three touchdowns in Tampa Bay’s 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Brady passed for 4,633 yards and 40 touchdowns while leading the Bucs to an 11-5 record during the regular season.

Tom Brady rookie card sells for record $1.32 million

A Tom Brady rookie card sold for a record $1.32 million on Thursday on PWCC Marketplace, an online auction house and repository for cards.

The autographed 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket card was graded an eight with a 10 grading on the signature. It was purchased by James Park, a known card collector and noted Brady fan.

“I lived in Boston for 10 years and so am a huge fan of Brady,” Park said in comments posted to PWCC Marketplace’s Instagram account. “I’ve also had a love of collecting cards since I was a kid. Given Brady’s uncontested status as GOAT in football, this card is an important piece of sports history and of any collection.”

The $1.32 million price tag is believed to be the highest price paid for a football card, eclipsing the previous record by nearly $500,000. As the card marketplace continues to rise in interest and value, this sale soared past a recent Patrick Mahomes card that sold for $861,000 in the beginning of February.

The 2017 National Treasures autographed Mahomes card was graded a nine and was one of only five of that specific card. That sale broke the previous record, which was held by another Brady card that sold for $555,988 in January.

This most recent record might be short-lived given the way the industry is headed, and considering there is already a similar card being sold at Lelands auction house. The same Brady card is up for auction, but it’s graded an 8.5 with the signature graded a nine.

The card at Lelands currently has a bid at $707,565 with 29 days still remaining in the lot.

What Gisele Bündchen asked Tom Brady after he won Super Bowl 2021

There was more to Tom Brady’s post-Super Bowl embrace with wife Gisele Bündchen in Tampa Bay last month.

During an appearance Tuesday on “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” Brady — now the owner of seven Super Bowl titles — spoke about the moments after his Tampa Bay Buccaneers topped the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 2021.

“I was looking for my family,” the 43-year-old quarterback recalled. “All the sudden I see my oldest son [Jack] run over to me, ‘Dad!’ you know, and I gave a big hug. I saw my two little ones [daughter Vivian and son Benjamin], and then all of the sudden I saw my wife, and I gave her a big hug.”

Brady said his wife of 12 years then asked him: “What more do you have to prove?”

“I was trying to figure out a way to change the subject really quick,” Brady said of his response. “I think I moved on to something else pretty quickly.”

Following Brady’s first Super Bowl win with his new team, Bündchen posted a family photo to Instagram that featured their two children, Vivian, 8, and Benjamin, 10, and 13-year-old Jack, whom Brady shares with his ex, Bridget Moynahan.

“Congratulations my love! Over the years I have seen you overcome so much adversity, physically and emotionally. I can for sure say you are the most dedicated, focused and mentally tough person I have ever meet,” Bündchen, 40, posted at the time.

“It has been a challenging year and watching you in a new environment, putting in the extra time to get to know and support your teammates, working with your new coaches with respect and grace, waking up extra early every day to deal with the bumps and bruises of playing football, never complaining, you just kept focusing on your goal to go out there and be the best leader you can be.”

Bündchen has broached the retirement subject before. After Brady led the Patriots to a Super Bowl comeback over the Falcons in 2017, Bündchen expressed concern over concussions in an interview with CBS.

“He had a concussion last year. He has concussions pretty much every …” she said, before cutting herself off. “I mean, we don’t talk about it. But he does have concussions. I don’t really think it’s a healthy thing for anybody to go through.”

While this is Brady’s first season in Tampa Bay following 20 seasons in New England, Bündchen was already convinced in late 2018 that any retirement chatter would go in his ear and out the other.

“I haven’t been very successful.” the Brazilian-born model told Saints fan Ellen DeGeneres at the time. “I want him to do whatever makes him happy.”

Last month, Brady said he will “definitely consider” playing past the age of 45. He turns 44 in August.

Source — Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady to have minor knee surgery during offseason

TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady will undergo a minor surgical procedure on his knee this offseason, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The upcoming surgery was first reported by the Tampa Bay Times.

A source close to the situation told ESPN that this was not a recent injury and that Brady, who led the Bucs to a victory this past Sunday in Super Bowl LV, had been planning the procedure for months.

Brady was not listed on the Bucs’ injury report all season. He was listed on the report as “not injury related” when he was given a handful of off days by coach Bruce Arians, something the Bucs also did with Rob Gronkowski, Ndamukong Suh and other veteran players.

Brady wore a brace on his left knee Wednesday during the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl boat parade. But wearing the brace is not uncommon for the 43-year-old Brady, who also wears it when golfing and during other recreational activities.

Brady was named Super Bowl MVP for the fifth time in his career Sunday after passing for 201 yards and three touchdowns in Tampa Bay’s 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

With the win, Brady has more Super Bowl titles (seven) than any franchise in NFL history, topping the six each won by the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots. Brady also became the only player with five Super Bowl MVPs; Joe Montana is second all time with three.

Source — Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady apologized to Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu in text message after Super Bowl

TAMPA, Fla. — Immediately after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 in Super Bowl LV on Sunday, Bucs quarterback Tom Brady texted an apology to Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu for several on-field verbal altercations, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

ESPN was read the contents of the text out loud.

Brady apologized to Mathieu for losing his composure in the heat of the moment, of which Mathieu said, “I’ve never really seen that side of him.”

During the game, Brady and Mathieu sparred multiple times. At one point, Brady even chased him down and got in his face.

Brady called Mathieu the “ultimate competitor” in his apology text and said he knew he needed to match Mathieu’s intensity Sunday.

Brady told Mathieu he’d watched him since his days at LSU, and he praised Mathieu for his heart, calling him an “incredible leader, champion and class act.”

Brady also expressed his desire to apologize in person in the future. He said his outbursts in an emotional moment were in no way a reflection on his feelings toward Mathieu, whom he spoke of highly throughout the week leading up to the game.

Mathieu explained his side of the altercation, saying in a since-deleted tweet that Brady started the verbal spat when he called Mathieu “something I won’t repeat.”

“He’s clearly chasing me, but I got flagged,” Mathieu said in another deleted tweet.

Tom Brady, Gronk joke about retirement in Super Bowl commercial

Gronk and Tom Brady are going head to head — in a quirky new Super Bowl 2021 commercial.

The two former New England Patriots teammates, who both now play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, appeared in a T-Mobile ad that debuted Friday ahead of Sunday’s big game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

In the commercial, which takes place last year, Brady, 43, calls up his buddy to ask what his next move should be — after two decades in the game and six Super Bowl rings on his fingers.

“I got one word for you: retirement,” a formerly retired Rob Gronkowski, 31, tells Brady while putting around on a sunny golf course. “If you retire now, you’re gonna be walking on soft sand in a week. Retirement is like winning another one! Maybe I’ll even join you.”

Except, that’s not what Brady heard, no thanks to his “spotty network,” a voiceover says.

“If you retire now, you’re soft and weak,” the garbled feed yells out. “Just come to Florida and win another one.”

“Like it’s that easy, Gronk,” Brady says to himself after the call. Fast forward to this year, and the rest is history. “I’m taking Gronk with me,” Brady vows in a fake press conference at the end of the ad.

So that’s how they both ended up in Tampa. Maybe spotty networks aren’t such a bad thing after all.

The Brady-Gronk gag is just one of the Super Bowl 2021 commercials released early ahead of Sunday’s big game, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on CBS. Fellow football great Joe Montana also appeared in an ad for Guinness, while a different-kind-of-great John Travolta and his daughter Ella revived Travolta’s “Grease” moves in a now-viral ad for Scotts & Miracle Gro.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs to square off in Super Bowl LV

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game on Sunday, 31 to 26, to advance to Super Bowl 55. Later Sunday night, the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs took home the AFC Championship with a 38 to 24 win over the Buffalo Bills, securing a spot in a second straight Super Bowl.

Super Bowl 55 is scheduled to be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, making this the first time in Super Bowl history that one of the competing teams will be playing in their home stadium.

The last time a team competing for the NFL championship played in their home stadium was in 1966, when the Packers defeated the Cleveland Browns at Lambeau Field, one season before the start of the Super Bowl era.

Twice in Super Bowl history, California teams have played in the same city as their home field, but in a different venue. The Los Angeles Rams, who at the time called the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum home, played at the Rose Bowl in Super Bowl 14. The San Francisco 49ers played at Stanford Stadium in Super Bowl 19, but their home games were played at Candlestick Park.

Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady, who played with the New England Patriots for 20 seasons, led Tampa Bay to its first Super Bowl appearance since they won it in 2003. Until this season, that was Tampa Bay’s only Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. Brady will be appearing in his 10th Super Bowl, having already won six, both high marks for any player in NFL history.

The Buccaneers got off to a hot start on Sunday, taking a 21-10 lead into halftime. The offense sputtered in the second half, however, thanks in part to 3 interceptions thrown by Brady. But with a little over 2 minutes remaining in the game and facing a 4th down from their opponent’s 8 yard line, the Packers elected to kick a field goal rather than go for the touchdown, which would have put them a two point conversion away from a tie. They never got the ball back, as the Bucs offense got two more first downs on the ensuing possession.

“It’s been a great journey thus far,” Brady said after Sunday’s game. “We put the work in. Guys just embraced everything, really, when [head coach Bruce Arians] got here last year. There was a lot of great things that were happening, a lot of great young players. I just made a decision. I’ve loved coming to work every day with this group of guys.”

Brady will face off against Patrick Mahomes, who earned the title of Super Bowl MVP after leading the Chiefs to a 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54. The upcoming matchup will be the largest age gap between opposing quarterbacks in Super Bowl history, as Mahomes is 18 years, 1 month and 4 days younger than Brady.

The Chiefs faced an early 9-0 deficit in the AFC Championship after a muffed punt gave Buffalo the ball at the 3 yard line. The Bills, already up 3, scored a touchdown on the first play of the drive, but missed the extra point. After that, the Chiefs’ offense came to life, scoring 21 points in the second quarter while their defense held the Bills to just three points. The Bills wouldn’t score another touchdown until the 4:08 mark of the fourth quarter.

After an unsuccessful 2-point conversion, Buffalo found themselves down by 17. They managed to recover an onside kick, but the following possession only amounted to another field goal, cutting the lead to 14 with a little more than three minutes remaining in the game. The Chiefs then put together an eight-play drive, including three kneel downs, to run out the clock and secure the victory.

Super Bowl 55 is scheduled to be played on Sunday, February 7 and will air on CBS.
