College football picks, schedule: Predictions against the spread, odds for top 25 games today in Week 12

Championship races heading down the stretch, both at the conference and the College Football Playoff levels, ramp up on Saturday as the 2021 regular season gets closer to its conclusion. There’s no conference in which separation is potentially greater than the Big Ten, and two of the titans from the East Division in the conference with CFP aspirations are set to square off in a marquee top-10 showdown here in Week 12.

The day begins with No. 7 Michigan State going on the road to Columbus to face a No. 4 Ohio State team that’s really seemed to find its offensive rhythm of late. The Buckeyes are significant favorites because of that offensive attack as well as the Spartans’ poor passing defense. Michigan State, however, enters with a massive chip on its shoulder. This is a team that feels disrespected by the CFP committee in being ranked behind No. 6 Michigan — a team it defeated this season. However, an upset win over the Buckeyes in Columbus would surely earn the Spartans the respect to which they feel entitled.

Also in the spotlight Saturday is No. 2 Alabama, which can clinch the SEC West title and set up the most anticipated matchup of the 2021 season in the conference title game on Saturday, Dec. 4 with No. 1 Georgia with a win over no. 21 Arkansas. In the nightcap of the evening, No. 3 Oregon will look to boost its resume with a victory on the road against a tough No. 24 Utah squad.

While winning is all that matters for the standings, we care about whether these teams will cover their spreads. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports throughout the day for college football coverage from the opening kickoff onward. Let’s take a look at our expert picks for the 12th full Saturday of the season.

Odds via Caesars Sportsbook | All times Eastern

No. 7 Michigan State at No. 4 Ohio State

12 p.m. | ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) — There are two factors at play for me with this pick. The first and most important one is that Michigan State is a good football team, so to get nearly three touchdowns with them against an Ohio State team that’s struggled to dominate opponents all season long is a hard deal to pass up. The other factor is the timing of the game. While this one is huge, Ohio State plays Michigan next week. The Buckeyes have been bad against the spread before the Michigan game, and they have failed to cover the spread a week before Michigan for seven straight seasons (they didn’t play last year). Prediction: Michigan State (+19) — Tom Fornelli

Iowa State at No. 13 Oklahoma

12 p.m. | Fox, fuboTV (Try for free) — Oklahoma’s poor performance against Baylor corresponded with its first matchup against a halfway decent defense. The bad news? The Cyclones might be even better on that side of the ball, and they boast a running back that will keep the chains moving. Oklahoma might find a way to pull away in a home game, but ISU can easily keep the game close once again. Prediction: Iowa State (+4) — Shehan Jeyarajah

No. 21 Arkansas at No. 2 Alabama

3:30 p.m. | CBS, CBSSports.comCBS Sports App — Arkansas’ offense will have enough success against Alabama to at least keep this one in doubt heading into the fourth quarter. Will KJ Jefferson and the rest of the offense get the job done? No. A late mistake or two will cost the Hogs in this one, but they’ll keep it within three touchdowns. Prediction: Arkansas (+20.5) — Barrett Sallee

No. 6 Michigan at Maryland

3:30 p.m. | Big Ten Network, fuboTV (Try for free) — Michigan’s defensive front will be the group that wins this game. Maryland has been able to move the ball between the 20s this season, but it has struggled when it gets into the red zone. That’s where the Wolverines will start to overwhelm a Terps offensive line that has failed to establish an edge against the better teams in the Big Ten. Prediction: Michigan (-14.5) — Chip Patterson

No. 3 Oregon at No. 24 Utah

7:30 p.m. | ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) — Utah’s only loss in the last two months came against an Oregon State team that is one of only two teams in the conference that averages more yards rushing per game than Utah. Now the Utes must face the other one in Oregon. The Ducks should win a close one. Prediction: Oregon (+3) — David Cobb

Stock Market Today: Dow and Oil Drop as Covid Fears Grip Europe While Tech Rises

Text size

Current Chair Jerome Powell is viewed as likely to be renominated as leader of the Federal Reserve.

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Technology stocks popped on Friday, while the

Dow Jones Industrial Average

fell and bond yields dipped alongside a new surge in Covid-19 cases.

In midday trading, the Dow slid 174 points, or 0.5%, after the index slipped 60 points Thursday to close at 35,870. The

S&P 500

was rising 0.2% after the index closed at an all-time high Thursday. The technology-heavy

Nasdaq Composite

rose 0.7%.

The 10-year Treasury yield fell to 1.53% from a Thursday close of 1.61%. That’s a steep drop for one day, bringing it farther below its second half 2021 peak of 1.7%, hit in late October.

That bodes well for the tech trade. Lower bond yields make futures profits more valuable—and fast-growing companies in the sector are expecting a large share of their profits to come many years down the line.

Consistent with that, the S&P 500 is outperforming the Dow because of its concentration in technology. Outside of tech, stocks were having a rough day; almost 60% of S&P 500 stocks were in the red, according to FactSet.

Ultimately, market participants are rushing into safety Friday. The drop in the yield means investors are buying up the bond, sending the price higher. This comes as new Covid-19 cases perk up in Europe, prompting Austria to announce lockdowns beginning next week.

Also not helping investors’ appetite for risk was economic data out of Germany. The countries’ producer-price index gained 3.8% month-over-month, higher than the expected 1.9% and above the previous result of 2.3%. Such strong inflation could compel the European Central Bank to hike interest rates, which could choke off economic growth, ultimately lowering inflation. ECB President Christine Lagarde said Monday morning that the central bank is currently unlikely to raise rates in 2022. Still, economic data will help guide monetary policy.

The price of oil also dropped. WTI crude oil fell 4.2% to $75.70 a barrel. It’s down 9% from its 2021 high of more than $84 a barrel hit on Nov. 9.

Oil stocks slid, too. The

Energy Select Sector SPDR

Fund (XLE) fell more than 3%. It’s down just over 7% since the end of October when it hit a 2021 high.

Overseas, Hong Kong’s

Hang Seng

Index fell 1.1%, underperforming other bourses in Asia as it was weighed down by a stark fall in

Alibaba

(ticker: BABA and 9988.H.K.) stock following the Chinese e-commerce giant’s quarterly results Thursday that showed slowing growth. The pan-European

Stoxx 600

fell 0.3%.

Here are five stocks on the move Friday:

Intuit

(INTU) stock gained 9.5% after the company reported a profit of $1.53 a share, beating estimates of 97 cents a a share, on sales of $2 billion, above expectations for $1.8 billion.

Williams-Sonoma

(WSM) stock rose 0.6% after the company reported a profit of $3.32 a share, beating estimates of $2.56 a share, on sales of $2.1 billion, above expectations for $1.8 billion.

Foot Locker

(FL) stock dropped 12% even after the company reported a profit of $1.93 a share, beating estimates for $1.37 a share, on sales of $2.19 billion, above expectations for $2.15 billion.

Nvidia

(NVDA), which has been on a tear this week—up around 7% over the last five days—was rising again, climbing 4%.

Workday

(WDAY) was sliding, down 3.1% despite posting better-than-expected earnings late Thursday.

La Palma volcano, live updates today: eruption, tsunami warning and latest news | Canary Islands

Almost two months after it first erupted, the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma has claimed its first victim. According to reports from Spanish news wire EFE, a 70-year-old man was killed while working as a volunteer cleaning up volcanic ash when the roof of the building he was on collapsed.

The vast amounts of ash – which consists of fragments of volcanic rock and glass – being emitted from Cumbre Vieja has been carpeting buildings across La Palma, leading the Spanish government to mobilize military personnel to help with the clean-up.

The volunteer, who had the necessary authorization from the Island Council of La Palma to carry out the work on other properties, was on the roof of his own home in the neighbourhood of Corazoncillo on Friday when the accident occurred.

Sony Direct PS5 restock confirmed for today — time and how to get yours

PS5 restock is returning to Sony Direct, and it’s happening soon. This invite-only drop is the retailer’s second restock since it opened up registrations to everyone last month.

The signup page is still live, so even if you didn’t get an invite for today’s PS5 restock, it’s worth registering now, as there could be more drops in the coming weeks as we enter the Black Friday deals season.

News of this latest Sony Direct restock surfaced yesterday, when Sony begin sending out invitations via email. These emails were then posted on Twitter. If you have registered for an invite we advise checking your email account, as you may have been selected.

Today’s invite-only PS5 restock is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET and according to the email will last until 7 p.m. ET or while supplies last. Considering the overwhelming demand for the next-gen console, we definitely don’t expect this restock to continue until the evening.

A restock for the general public could follow after the initial invite-only drop. Should there be a public drop, it’ll likely happen around 5 p.m. ET or so, but we have seen multiple Sony Direct restocks that have been entirely closed. If a public drop does happen, you’ll be able to get the PS5 for $499 via this link or the PS5 Digital for $399 via this link.

Now that Black Friday PS5 deals have arrived, slashing the price of loads of the best PS5 games and accessories, we’re expecting to see additional PS5 restocks at a host of major retailers. Make sure to bookmark our PS5 restock hub and we’ll alert you with the latest updates as we get them.

Sony Direct PS5 restock (in stock at 2 p.m. ET)

How to get notifications from Sony Direct

Occasionally, Sony Direct has restocks for invited guests only. (The invites are sent out via e-mail). Sony recently opened up registration to these events to the general public. Now anyone can sign up for invite-only Sony Direct PS5 restocks.

You’ll want to have an active Sony Direct account and make sure you have notifications set to “yes.” Creating a Sony Direct account is easy: You can sign up via this link here. Once you’ve set up an account, you’ll want to add your address and billing info. Having this info on file will make things easier should you manage to get a PS5 console in your cart.

To turn on notifications from Sony Direct, you’ll need to sign into your account, click on “My Profile,” and then click the “edit” button from your profile page. You’ll then be redirected to a new account settings page. From within that page, choose “notifications” from the left column and then make sure you opt-in to receive news and special offers from Sony.

Keep in mind this trick doesn’t guarantee you’ll get an invite in time for the next PS5 drop, but it should increase your chances for future exclusive Sony Direct PS5 restock events.

How to get a PS5 if you didn’t receive an invite

Usually after an invite-only PS5 restock, Sony tends to open its virtual queue to the general public. However, that’s not always guaranteed, as there have been instances where the retailer has completely sold out.

If there are extra consoles, a restock for the general public will likely occur after the invite-only event wraps up. (Usually an hour or two after the start of the original drop.) Of course, you can bookmark our page and we’ll keep you updated on the latest PS5 restock news from Sony Direct and all major U.S. retailers.

What to do once you’re in the queue

Once you’re in the virtual queue, you’ll be given an estimated wait time. All wait times vary, and there’s a good chance you’ll have a message telling you it will be “more than an hour.” If that’s the case, don’t despair. Your status can rapidly change and you may end up with a shorter wait time than estimated. (For instance, after waiting 20 minutes on a previous PS5 restock event, our time was cut from “more than an hour” to just 15 minutes).

Additionally, you may be required to solve a captcha. This is a simple challenge/question to ensure you’re not a bot and usually requires that you select a radio box. As a result, you’ll want to make sure your browser tab remains prominent, because if it’s not you might miss your captcha challenge and you could forfeit your place in line.

New Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer Premieres Today

Update: Sony Pictures has suggested that the trailer will drop at 5:30pm Pacific / 8:30pm Eastern today (that’s 1:30am UK / 12:30pm AEDT tomorrow).

The movie studio posted a video of stars Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon seemingly watching the new trailer at the same time yesterday. A caption read: “T-minus 24 hours until you get to see what they’re watching. New #SpiderManNoWayHome Trailer Tomorrow.”

A new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer will premiere tomorrow, November 16, and Marvel also released a new poster to mark the event.

The second official Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer will arrive tomorrow according to Marvel Entertainment’s official Twitter account. A new poster featuring Spider-Man and Doctor Strange facing off against Doc Ock’s arms, Electro (his electricity at least), and Green Goblin in the background has also been released.

Credit: Marvel Entertainment

The poster is a bit bare-bones, but we’ll hopefully get a better glimpse of what’s to come in tomorrow’s trailer ahead of its December 17 US theater release date (December 15 in the UK).

There have been several purported “leaks” for the new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer but none of them have been shown to be valid. These fan-made trailers have tried to predict plot points from the film, including heavily rumored appearances by past Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. But without an official trailer, these remain fan theories and speculation.

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Every Upcoming Movie and TV Show

Spider-Man: No Way Home marks the end of the “Home” franchise that began with Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Following the events of the last film, Peter Parker asks Doctor Strange for help regarding his secret identity and ends up messing with the multiverse.

Peter Parker actor Tom Holland has called the upcoming film the darkest in the trilogy. However, Marvel recently announced an animated prequel series set during Peter Parker’s Freshman year which will premiere on Disney+

La Palma volcano, live updates today: eruption, tsunami warning and latest news | Canary Islands

Relief funds slow to arrive on La Palma

DW – The Spanish government had pledged over €250 million to help the island’s inhabitants and finance new houses, infrastructure and compensation payments for businesses. But the funds have been slow to arrive.

So far, the regional government has been able to invest only a fraction of the promised money, for example, in housing for evacuees or to provide them with psychological support. Some funds have also gone into setting up new irrigation systems for some banana plantations that are cut off from the water supply.

However, many of the island’s residents complain that they have received hardly any of the financial aid so far because its distribution has been excessively bureaucratic.

Meanwhile, Spain is still dragging its heels on seeking funds from the EU disaster management mechanism.

College football scores, schedule, NCAA top 25 rankings, games today: Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Notre Dame live

There is so much that remains to be decided in college football as Week 11 arrives with a full slate of games in store for Saturday. Among the highlights are four games pitting top-20 teams against each other amid the race for conference titles and the mad dash for College Football Playoff positioning. With ranked teams in action starting at noon Et all the way up until No. 3 Oregon kicks off at 10 p.m., it figures to be another wild day.

Leading things off in the early window will be No. 8 Oklahoma traveling to No. 13 Baylor in a critical Big 12 showdown and No. 6 Michigan playing at Penn State as the Wolverines face a must-win situation against a divisional foe. No. 17 Auburn will also be in action during the early window as it tries to keep its SEC West title hopes alive against Mississippi State.

The afternoon brings No. 4 Ohio State’s clash with upset-minded No. 19 Purdue and the SEC on CBS Game of the Week between No. 1 Georgia and a surging Tennessee team. In the evening, No. 15 Ole Miss hosts No. 11 Texas A&M and No. 12 Wake Forest hosts No. 16 NC State in a critical ACC matchup. No. 9 Notre Dame also faces perhaps its toughest remaining test as the Fighting Irish go on the road to play Virginia. Finally, tp cap off the weekend, the Ducks host Washington State and No. 22 San Diego State plays Nevada in the late-night window to cap what should be another action-packed week of college football.

CBS Sports will be here every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the day. All times Eastern
