Peacock has removed its free membership tier for new customers

NBCUniversal will no longer be offering a free membership tier for new customers subscribing to its Peacock streaming service. As of January 30th, new Peacock customers will now need to subscribe to the Premium plan ($4.99 / month) with ads or Premium Plus ($9.99 / month) without ads to access content on the platform, as first reported by The Streamable.

A great deal of marketing for Peacock’s streaming debut in 2020 focused on the free membership tier, even introducing the service alongside the tagline “free as a bird.” The free membership was supported by ads and gave users access to a limited selection of Peacock content. Existing users will continue to have access to the free tier of Peacock, as will Premium Peacock subscribers who want to step down from their current paid membership.

Peacock is still operating at a loss despite recently surpassing 20 million paid subscribers

The Streamable reports an NBCUniversal source (delivering a message similar to an NBCUniversal spokesperson reached by Variety) said that the membership change would allow Peacock to better focus on its Premium membership offerings, which the company feels is the best way for customers to experience the service.

Peacock has managed to increase its total paid subscribers to 20 million, up from 9 million subscribers the previous year, likely due to broadcasting Premier League soccer matches alongside the success of original shows like Dr. Death, Bel-Air, and the first four seasons of Yellowstone — all of which require a Premium membership to watch in full. The sudden popularity of Peacock’s latest original series Poker Face is also likely to drive additional paid subscribers to the platform.

The Pokémon Tier List Fans Are Waiting On For Scarlet & Violet

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are about two months old at this point, but the quest to find out which Pokémon are the very best like no one ever was is an ongoing conversation among the competitive community. Smogon, one of the biggest hubs for competitive Pokémon on the internet, has been trying to sort through the games’ meta for awhile now, and while talks are still unfolding, we do have some idea of who the best Pokémon are in Generation IX.

If you want to just see the top Pokémon, feel free to ctrl+f/command+f “Who are the top ranked Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet?” Otherwise, let’s run through some context for those that don’t know how competitive Pokémon rankings work.

How do Pokémon competitive tiers work in Scarlet and Violet?

There are a lot of Pokémon, and a lot of disparity between them in terms of stats. So when it comes to creating a tier list for a Pokémon game, the community doesn’t just make one giant list. Instead, the Pokémon are divided into separate tier lists that have their own tiers. It sounds confusing, but think of it like this: the gap in stats between a little baby Pichu and Actual God Arceus is huge, and there are hundreds of Pokémon with different stats, movesets, and abilities that make them more or less competitively viable. Overall, the prospect of a perfectly balanced Pokémon game is unattainable in its current form, so rather than try and make a giant list and compare Pichu to Arceus, Pokémon fans divide Pokémon into different tiers that put different mons alongside others that are close in viability.

These tiers have contained rule sets that include and ban certain Pokémon for competitive play, but you’ll see a bit of overlap between the different tiers, as some ‘mons are considered viable in different tiers of play. These different tiers include:

Standard/Overused: This is often considered a ‘baseline’ experience for competitive Pokémon battling. Here you’ll find a lot of the most popular, non-legendary Pokémon.

Underused: The next tier below is for the middle of the road Pokémon who are decent, but there are typically better options depending on what you’re trying to accomplish.

Rarely Used: Here is where we start to get to the Pokémon that would be a rarity to see in any higher tier play, as a lot of these critters have either some notable drawbacks or would just be better off replaced by a different Pokémon.

Never Used: These are the real stinkers. The losers. The weakest links, as it were. While Never Used is not the standard way of play, some folks just prefer the Pokémon who occupy the less competitive space as it can make for a more interesting or at least different type of competitive environment. Personally, Beautifly is one of my favorite Pokémon, and it’s considered a Never Used Pokémon. Sometimes your friends are just not as good as the pros, and that’s okay.

Uber: This is the tier where most legendary Pokémon fall. Palkia, Arceus, Mew, the Lati twins? All of them exist here alongside a select few normies who have some great stats or strategies. A great deal of Pokémon that fall into the Uber tier are banned elsewhere, and for good reason. They’re the most powerful Pokémon in the game and can pretty easily bulldoze over everything else. So now they get to be in their own pool and fight each other, rather than stomping on a family of Maushold.

A lot of players will pick the Pokémon they like to play the main game, but competitive play tends to require a more calculated team.

What is Smogon?

For the uninitiated, Smogon is basically the officially unofficial hub for competitive Pokémon. Though the site technically abides by different rules than the official Pokémon competitive leagues, it has a pretty robust and thorough system for tier rankings that has become extremely common vernacular for the Pokémon community. It’s so prevalent that it’s recognized across Pokémon hubs like Serebii. So if you’re looking for an official ranking of the best Pokémon straight from The Pokémon Company’s mouth, that’s not what Smogon is. Plus, these kinds of discussions are often spurred by the community, as they’re the most equipped to speak candidly about the strengths and shortcomings of a game. So if you want to learn more about the best Pokémon to make up a competitive team, you won’t find a source more qualified than the users at Smogon.

The site also publishes usage statistics to give people a sense of how often certain Pokémon show up in competitive play, and based on December’s stats, it seems Paradox Pokémon are occupying a lot of space in standard play. Great Tusk was the most used Pokémon in December, with Iron Valiant, Roaring Moon, Iron Tusk, Iron Moth, and Iron Hands all appearing in the top 36 Pokémon in the tier.

Who are the top ranked Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet?

As previously outlined, who the “best” Pokémon are varies by tier, but it’s not just stats that determine how high a Pokémon will rank. There are also abilities, attacks, and stat training that will help a Pokémon climb the ranks. So while those are all key factors, the Smogon community has been debating and discussing the matter since Scarlet and Violet launched.

The easiest place to start is the Uber tier, as that’s where the most powerful Pokémon are, though a lot of them you won’t be able to use in competitive play outside of that tier. Unsurprisingly, the game mascots Koraidon and Miraidon are ranked at the very top of the Uber tier list. It’s often the case for most Pokémon games for the legendary box art characters to rank high, as they’re propped up as a powerful entity at the end of your journey. In Scarlet and Violet, you befriend these two almost immediately as the game starts, but they aren’t usable in battle until the endgame. They have powerful stats, abilities that give them stat boosts the second they’re on the field, and have a lot of tricks in their moveset.

Unsurprisingly, Miraidon and Koraidon are at the top of their tier.

Further down the list, the A rank of best Pokémon is primarily made up of both the secondary legendary monstersPokémon you’ll meet in the Paldea region (Chien-Pao, Ting-Lu, and Chi-Yu are here, though Wo-Chien is not part of the Uber tier) and the Paradox Pokémon that are ancient or futuristic relatives to established Pokémon. Flutter Mane, Great Tusk, and Iron Bundle lead the pack, with Iron Treads coming at the bottom of A-tier. There are a few normies here, as well, with Corviknight, Gholdengo, and Skeleridge also in A-tier.

When you go from Uber to Overused, you’ll notice some Pokémon who were ranked lower than others in Uber are ranked higher in lower ranks. This is because having some of those Uber Pokémon in the pool changes things in the meta, and as they’re not in the OU pool, some Pokémon who suffered from significant counters can rise in the ranks. So right now, Gholdengo, Dragapult, and Great Tusk are at the top of Smogon’s OU rankings for best Pokémon. This is above several legendaries like Chien-Pao and Ting-Lu, who fall into the A ranking alongside some Paradox Pokémon like Iron Valiant and Roaring Moon, as well as some standard Pokémon like Dragonite, Espathra, and Kingambit. As the A ranking goes down the list, some Pokémon that were ranked high in Uber like Corviknight, Iron Treads, and Glimmora appear alongside Dondozo, Graganacl, and Grimmsnarl.

The Paradox Pokémon ranking high makes sense, as they’re meant to be primal/synthetic versions of typical Pokémon with more powerful stats, more diverse movepools, and new typings that often give them a leg up on their modern day counterparts. They are, inherently, meant to be more powerful and dangerous Pokémon than the ones you’ll come across in the rest of Paldea. So they’d naturally float to the top of competitive play, as well.

Should you use the top Pokémon from the competitive tier lists?

Crucially, if you’re looking here for ideas on how to build a good competitive team, know that a tier ranking is not the end all be all of a Pokémon’s viability. For example, a lot of competitive players have latched onto Murkrow because it can use the move Tailwind to increase your team’s speed, and the Prankster ability gives you turn priority when using it. So while Murkrow’s stats are nothing to write home about and it doesn’t show up in most competitive rankings, it’s still a very useful addition to your team.

At the moment, it seems like Legendary and Paradox Pokémon are coming out on top for competitive play in the Uber and Standard tiers, but these rankings are still in flux and will change in the months to years to come as players discover new strategies and builds. These changes are pretty frequent right now because the game is still so new. So things are shifting around with some pretty broad strokes. So it will be interesting to see how the meta changes as time goes on and players learn new combinations and builds.

One Bay Area county moves into ‘high’ COVID tier, triggering new mask guidelines

COVID-19 community levels continue to rise across the U.S., with 14% of Americans now living in a region classified in the “high” tier Friday, based on
hospitalization and case metrics
used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the Bay Area, Santa Clara County became the first in the region to slip back into the “high” tier, for which the CDC
recommends people wear a high-quality mask
or respirator in public spaces and counsels those who are high-risk to consider avoiding nonessential indoor public activities.

Last week, only 5% of the U.S. population fell into the “high” category. About 38.1% of people now live in areas with “medium” virus levels, while 48.2% are in “low” areas.

Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano and Napa counties moved from “low” to “medium,” averaging more than 10 new COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 residents over the previous week. Under that tier, universal masking is required for specific high-risk settings, including jails and homeless shelters, per
California health department rules.
Health care settings already required rules and are not affected by the latest changes.

“We have observed worsening increases in COVID-19 case reports and hospitalizations since October,” Dr. Nicholas Moss, the Alameda County health officer, said in a statement. “Taking actions like masking and staying home when sick can prevent spreading illnesses like COVID-19, flu, and RSV and help protect our health care system from strain.”



Sonoma and Marin counties moved from “medium” to “low,” while San Francisco and San Mateo remained in “low,” where
masking remains optional.
Counties also move up from “low” if they record a rate of more than 200 new weekly cases per 100,000 residents.

The CDC’s community transmission map, based on a separate metric that tracks the rates of new cases and positive tests, shows all Bay Area counties
in the “high” virus transmission category,
reflecting nationwide trends.

“We are seeing a clear uptick in infections of COVID pretty much in every region of the country, up about 40% over the last couple of weeks,” Dr. Ashish Jha, the White House’s top COVID-19 official, told the Health Action Alliance
at an event Thursday.
“There’s going to be some bumpy days ahead.”

Netflix Reveals Ad-Supported Tier Launch Date And Pricing, WhichUndercuts Disney – Deadline

Netflix is undercutting Disney+ on price by a dollar a month as it prepares for a landmark expansion into advertising-supported streaming.

The company said its new subscription tier, Basic with Ads, will cost $6.99 a month and will launch November 3 in the U.S., more than a month before Disney’s December 8 rollout of the ad-supported version of Disney+. Canada and Mexico will get the new plan November 1 and two days later it will go live in the U.S., Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, and the UK, with Spain following on November 10. In the U.S., the entry-level price will be less than half the cost of the most popular tier, Standard, which is $15.49 a month.

Disney has announced both price hikes and a new ad-supported version of Disney+. When that new tier launches on December 8, it will be $7.99 a month, which is currently the stand-alone price for the ad-free Disney+. After December 8, the ad-free Disney+ will go to $10.99, though many consumers opt for the bundle of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, which offers savings on the regular price of each one.

In a blog post, Netflix COO Greg Peters said there will be four to five minutes of ads per hour, with both series and feature films being interrupted by spots. (Watch a video below showing how it will look.)

Jeremi Gorman, head of worldwide advertising for Netflix, said inventory is nearly sold-out, with several hundred advertisers in the mix. Asked during a Zoom call with members of the press about how much advertisers paid, she declined to offer specifics. As to categories, political will be a notable no-fly zone given how meaningfully they have surged in linear TV in recent election cycles, along with others like guns, smoking or plugs for any products and services Netflix deems illegitimate.

Asked on the Zoom call to expand on the plan for ads during movies, Peters clarified that new movies coming to the service — notably marquee originals like Knives Out 2 — “will just have a pre-roll” of spots before the feature plays without interruption. “We’ll try to preserve that sort of cinematic model there,” consistent how most rivals handle it. By contrast, movies that have “been on the service for a while,” Peters said, will have a more “traditional” combination of pre-roll and mid-roll ads, albeit with “less frequent” breaks.

The degree to which the company has reversed its long-held position on advertising is difficult to overstate. Co-founder and Co-CEO Reed Hastings and other executives spent years denying that Netflix would ever work with Madison Avenue, with Hastings citing his wish to avoid entanglements over privacy and other complications that have hampered Facebook and other digital giants. ““We want to be the safe respite where you can explore, you can get stimulated, have fun and enjoy – and have none of the controversy around exploiting users with advertising,” Hastings said on a 2020 earnings call.

That was during comparatively halcyon days, however. In 2020, as Covid shut down the world, Netflix experienced a massive surge of subscriptions, adding 26 million paying customers in the first half of the year alone — equivalent to the total for all of 2019.

This year, the impact of inflation and a worsening economy on consumers as well as intensifying competition in a subscription streaming race Netflix once ran virtually by itself, have combined to create new headwinds. When Netflix posted two straight quarters of disappointing subscriber numbers — and even lost total subscribers for the first time in more than a decade — that misfire triggered a dramatic selloff in Netflix stock and prompted a range of changes at the company. In addition to cutting costs and streamlining its staff, the company decided to change its stance on ads, sensing the potential to add billions in revenue. A partnership with Microsoft was announced and two prominent Snap execs, including former Hulu ad sales chief Peter Naylor, were recruited to lead Netflix’s brand foray.

Not all programming will carry ads at launch. The blog post noted that “a limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available” on Basic with Ads “due to licensing restrictions, which we’re working on.” During the press call, Peters said the missing titles represent about 5% to 10% of the overall pie. “It’s all based on deals, not a specific studio,” he said. “And again, we’ll work to reduce that number over time.” Most previous agreements with content suppliers were forged “in a timeframe before when we were not contemplating doing an advertising-based tier.” As Peters noted at the top of the call, just six months have passed since Hastings stunned Wall Street and the media business by seemingly tossing off a mention of the ad plan during a quarterly earnings call and the go-to-market plan being finalized.

The blog post also noted that Netflix has teamed with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science “to verify the viewability and traffic validity of our ads” beginning in the first quarter of 2023. Also next year, Nielsen will use its Digital Ad Ratings in the U.S., enabling the measurement firm to offer a sense of how viewership is going, reporting figures eventually via its long-in-the-works Nielsen ONE offering.

Downloads will not be allowed in Basic with Ads and the resolution is 720p, not as sharp as the 1080p of Netflix’s Standard plan, its most popular.

For one, it’s now shifted to a 5v5 format, with only one Tank on the battlefield at any given time. On top of that, three new heroes have joined the game at launch – and play has also shifted from crowd controls and stuns to the act of killing players.

It’s a pretty enormous overhaul of what came before, basically, so it’s understandable if you are a little lost on what’s doing well and what is not in Overwatch 2 – once you have unlocked all Heroes first, of course.

How we settled on our Overwatch 2 tier list ranking at launch

Overwatch 2 is just setting out with its first footsteps (albeit with some connection-related stumbles), which means that everything is still currently in flux and being figured out. Expect the meta to be fairly volatile throughout the first season as the player base adjusts to 5v5, new maps and three new heroes being added.

That being said, we’ve pooled several resources to make up this list. Firstly, through a testing phase and launch, we’ve played around 40 hours of Overwatch 2 and have been seeing what’s been doing well. On top of that, we were privy to pick-up games between high-ranking players and have been keeping an eye out on what’s been dominating in those games. We’ve also spoken to some of these players about their experiences.

On top of that, though the current patch is not live in the Overwatch League, we’ve also been watching professional teams play all year with Overwatch 2 and are able to get inclinations with what teams have been playing.

We’ve also considered tier lists from Overwatch content creators like Flats and Your Overwatch. All of this has given us a broad understanding of where the meta is at launch. That being said, expect it to move fast as people learn the game better.

Who are the best Heroes in Overwatch 2?

Who exactly makes up our ‘best’ tier in Overwatch 2 at launch? Right now, it’s clear that a certain playstyle is doing very well – Dive.

This is a classic Overwatch strategy that is all about speed and getting kills fast. In a well-executed dive, several highly mobile heroes will execute a coordinated jump on one or two enemies to eliminate backlines quickly.

Right now, several of the best heroes are all dive superstars. Genji is thriving in a world with fewer crowd control abilities, and he has immense lethality with a boatload of maneuverability to boot.

Newcomer Kiriko makes an excellent partner for Genji, as she can move between the main team and a flank with him easily with her Swift Step teleport. She can take support from multiple fronts throughout a fight and her Protection Suzu, which grants invincibility for a little less than a second, can be an amazing tool to save diving heroes who have committed too far.

Winston makes a great Tank to pair as part of the dive mentality, as he always has. He’s also thriving with less crowd control and Kiriko has a better time keeping up with him to heal him than other Supports, which has always been a danger when playing Winston.

Lucio can be another decent addition to a dive composition, however, he is also pretty good in most any compositions.

Lucio.

Speed is king right now, and his speed boost helps a lot, but he’s also able to sustain himself and displace the enemy team, while also getting kills in the right hands which make him very valuable in a 5 v 5 environment.

Similar to Lucio, D.VA can also work on a dive (though, generally you’d want to stick with Winston in a coordinated team), but she is more versatile. D.VA is just generally strong right now and is a great all-rounder pick if you don’t have a team who are going to execute a coordinated dive.

If you want a very strong option that will plug in and work in most situations, D.VA is a great option at her current power.

Best Tank Heroes in Overwatch 2

Winston.

Tanks have seen a big change with the launch of Overwatch 2, with one being removed from the battlefield, meaning that just one player is now responsible for all the duties. Luckily then, most have been souped up significantly to handle that. And there are a lot of great options at the time.

Right now, high mobility, and especially those that can dive on targets are the best Tank options in the game generally. In particular, Winston is the king in that role.

Thanks to the viability of heroes like Genji, Kiriko, Lucio, and Sombra, dive competitions are very good right now. Winston can jump into enemy back lines and, if his team is coordinated, expect help from a flanking Damage dealer, but also importantly can be saved by Kiriko diving in with him.

Too often in Overwatch 1, Winston would dive in and find himself disconnected from his healers, but Kiriko mitigates that a lot.

Elsewhere, D.VA is also very, strong. She is a great all-around pick that is feeling very viable and versatile. She can dive in a similar way to Winston (though not quite as well), but can also defend her team with her three seconds of Defense Matrix.

She can be defensive and aggressive from one moment to the next. If you want a tank that will slot into most competitions and at least provide some value, D.VA is a great pick.

D.VA.

Sigma is a great choice too if you are looking for a more traditional, stationary tanking experience. He hasn’t received too many changes in the move to Overwatch 2, but his kit remains very strong, especially as a solo tank.

He can absorb a lot of damage and has the potential to be the highest-damage tank. If you’re not one for diving in, Sigma should be your go-to.

If you want to just play selfishly and try to secure kills and be an exceptionally hard hero to kill, Roadhog is a bit of a sleeper pick too.

Genji.

Right now, as stated with the tanks, dive heroes are strong and no one is enjoying the move to Overwatch 2 more than Genji.

He hasn’t had any huge rework or changes, but with Blizzard’s philosophy of removing a lot of the stuns and crowd-control effects, there is a lot less that gets in the way of Genji, who can now dash in and get lots of executions and massive Dragon Blades, as long as you know what you are doing.

Sombra is an excellent partner to Genji as both can get into the enemy back line and feast upon weaker health targets fairly easily. They are both made better too with the addition of Kiriko who is an amazing support to pair with them as she can easily join flanks by teleporting to the heroes if they need a hand.

For those who want something a little simpler though, Soldier 76 is a very versatile pick that will slot into most competitions with no trouble. With the loss of a second tank, there are fewer shields and abilities protecting teams, which means sightlines are more open.

This is where some ranged Damage heroes will thrive. Sojourn is a great alternative if she is more your speed, and to a slightly lesser degree, Ashe is also an excellent pick if you can keep sufficient distance between you and diving heroes.

Best Support Heroes in Overwatch 2

Kiriko.

Currently, Kiriko is the best healer in the game. She’s just excellent. She has a great combination of abilities, a lot of healing, and can appear almost anywhere in an instant. Currently, the play has flankers running around the back of teams, and Kiriko hunting with them to support.

Due to her ability to teleport, she can both dive in to help teammates or dive out if a situation gets too spicy. On top of that, her ultimate is very strong and has some wild interactions with other heroes.

Elsewhere Lucio is also excellent. He fits into a lot of compositions, and his speed boost is always useful, especially with mobility such an important factor of the meta. Add on top of that, his Sound Barrier is still an excellent ultimate to counter powerful enemy ultimates.


Ana and Zenyatta are excellent as well, and in a void, could well be S-Tier themselves. Ana’s Biotic Grenade and Zenyatta’s Discord Orbs are powerful utility tools. The only real issue with these two is that they are juicy targets for diving heroes, which again, are very strong right now. However, with some care from the teammates to look out for them, they are very powerful options.

Generally, Supports currently feel very good across the board, and any ranked lower are generally still very good, so if you have a strong preference for another, our advice is to go with what you know.

Remember, for new players, you need to unlock Heroes in Overwatch 2 before you can start using them – but hopefully the recommendations above give you options as you go.

Arknights: Azure’s Module Upgrade Tier List | Arknights Wiki

The Module Upgrade system is a new mechanic that will be introduced during the Lingering Echoes event that allows players to upgrade any available Module they already have to Stages 2 and 3, further improving the stat boosts and modifying the Operator’s Talents. This system is designed to provide Operators with much better tailored boosts, instead of the more generic Trait changes so far, and can result in incredible boosts in viability depending on the Module.

The materials necessary for these upgrades are Data Supplement Strips for Stage 2 and Data Supplement Devices for Stage 3. These two new materials will be introduced alongside the Stationary Security Service mode, a permanent event that provides these materials in very limited amounts. Other than this new gamemode, these materials are pursachable in certain event stores.

Due to the scarcity of these new materials (each 6★ Operator requires 60 and 20 of each respectively,  plus more Module Data Blocks) and the high regular material cost of these upgrades (7 Tier 5 Materials and 220k LMD total from Stage 1 to Stage 3), it is incredibly important to be able to prioritize which Module Upgrades to focus on and to discern between which ones are not worth the hassle, which ones are, and up to which Upgrade Level.

This tier list will focus on the relative strength of the Module Upgrade exclusively. This will not rate the overall viability of the Operators post-module, but instead how strong these Module Upgrades are and how much they boost the Operator’s performance individually. In short, if you already use these Operators often, how prioritary are their Module Upgrades?
