Real Betis vs Barcelona, Spanish Super Cup: Match Thread, Live Updates

FULL-TIME, Real Betis 2-2 Barcelona (2-4 pens): Barça are through thanks to Ter Stegen, who shined in the shootout and saved two penalties. Pedri scored the last for Barça, who are through and will play Real Madrid for the title on Sunday.

PENALTY SHOOTOUT: BARCELONA WIN 4-2 ON PENALTIES!

FULL-TIME, Real Betis 2-2 Barcelona (AET): After an exciting bonus period, we are going to a penalty shootout. Oh dear.

118’ RED CARD! Guardado is sent off for Betis after receiving two yellow cards in extra-time and Betis will be down to 10 for the final seconds of the bonus period.

GOAL, Real Betis 2-2 Barcelona (Loren 101’): Betis equalize. Luiz Henrique plays a one-two inside the box and squares it to Loren Morón who scores a nice backheel through the legs of Ronald Araujo to make it 2-2.

GOLAZO!!! Real Betis 1-2 Barcelona (Fati 93’): BARÇA RETAKE THE LEAD!!! Marcos Alonso sends a free-kick into the box, William Carvalho heads it into the edge of the box and Ansu Fati fires a SPECTACULAR volley with his left foot to find the corner and put the Blaugrana ahead! WHAT A GOAL!!!

EXTRA-TIME KICKOFF! Real Betis 1-1 Barcelona: We’re underway for the bonus period.

FULL-TIME, Real Betis 1-1 Barcelona: And we’re going to extra-time. Unfortunately.

81’ GOAL DISALLOWED! Lewandowski gets his second of the night and makes it 2-1 for Barça, but Ferran Torres was offside in the buildup and Barça have a second goal ruled out on the night.

GOAL, Real Betis 1-1 Barcelona (Fekir 77’): Betis equalize. Barça can’t clear their lines at the edge of the box and the ball finds Nabil Fekir all alone at the far post and the Frenchman fires it home.

SECOND HALF KICKOFF! Real Betis 0-1 Barcelona: Back underway in Riyadh!

HALFTIME, Real Betis 0-1 Barcelona: Barça started well but struggled with the final ball, and Betis had little possession but were a threat pretty much every time they attacked and forced Marc-André ter Stegen into some big saves. But Barça go into the break with the lead, and the second half promises to be fun.

GOAL!!! Real Betis 0-1 Barcelona (Lewandowski 40’): THIS ONE COUNTS!!! Barça go on a fast counter-attack as Pedri sends a long ball towards Ousmane Dembélé who beats Ruibal and finds Lewandowski in the box, and after his first shot is blocked by Luiz Pelipe the ball finds the Pole again and he finally finds the net!

23’ GOAL DISALLOWED! Barça take the lead with a very nice volley by Pedri inside the box, but Raphinha was slightly offside in the buildup and the goal is called off by VAR.

KICKOFF! Real Betis 0-0 Barcelona: And we’re underway in Riyadh!

Google filing at FCC reveals upcoming Nest Wi-Fi 6E router with Thread

Google appears poised to launch an updated Nest router equipped with Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth Low Energy, and Thread mesh networking radios later this year, according to a new FCC filing. It has the model number A4R-G6ZUC, which is similar to IDs assigned to not only the previous Nest Wifi but also the Nest Mini, Thermostat, and even the Google Glass.

In June, a source confirmed with 9to5Google that a new Google / Nest router was on its way, and now the outlet says it has confirmed this is the model number for that device.

The filing’s internal and external pictures remain confidential and unlisted but break down the wireless technology onboard as well as an “Internal Proprietary Antenna Solution consisting of 6 antennas”:

  • 2 x 2.4GHz / 5GHz dual band antennas for BT, Thread, 5GHz Wi-Fi Primary
  • 2 x 5GHz Wi-Fi Diversity
  • 2 x 2.4GHz / 6GHz dual band antennas for Wi-Fi

Unlike their Wi-Fi 6 predecessors, Wi-Fi 6E routers have a new 6GHz band — in addition to 2.4GHz and 5GHz — for compatible devices to connect to, reducing signal interference and providing faster speeds. Even if you don’t have many devices that can connect on 6GHz yet, the band can be used to backhaul local communications between access points, taking some of the noise out of the network that can increase performance for other connected devices.

While the 9.6Gbps theoretical top speed is unchanged from Wi-Fi 6, the new spectrum should allow devices to use the maximum allowed channel size and reach higher speeds in real-world situations, perhaps around 1–2Gbps with lower latency than you’re used to from a wireless connection.

Since the release of the original Nest Wifi, smart home devices like the HomePod Mini adopted Thread — a part of the smart home interoperability standard Google adopted known as Matter. Thread can create a dedicated network just for smart home devices, making them more reliable and responsive no matter the manufacturer.

It’s possible that the new Wi-Fi 6E Google / Nest router will be out by the end of the year. The current Nest Wifi package comes with a router and single mesh point and sells for $269 regularly, but the price could increase like the competition’s this time around. TP-Link’s mesh Wi-Fi 6E option, for instance, comes in a pair as well for $299, and the Eero Pro 6E from Amazon comes in at $499 for a pair.

52 Household Items That Are Actually Way More Dangerous Than People Might Realize, According To This Online Thread

I have an important story!!

When my dad was a kid, one of his good friends died by inhaling Pam cooking spray. The boy was a good, smart kid and just thought inhaling Pam would get you a little high, like sniffing a Sharpie or whatever. But Pam coats your lungs and very quickly suffocates you if you breathe it in. He had no idea how dangerous it was and he was dead in minutes. It was absolutely devastating for everyone who knew him.

TLDR; never ever inhale Pam and be very careful leaving it around kids! Make sure your kids are aware that it is deadly!

greenoctopusink , Mike Mozart Report

Candles. Just because they’re trendy and smell nice, doesn’t mean they’re not still a naked flame that can cause a housefire that can kill you in your sleep.

NeverCadburys , Katy Report

I used a mold removing product in my shower. Noticed a wierd unpleasant smell and didn’t feel well. Checked whats in the product and quickly realised I almost killed myself.

Moral of the story. Don’t pee in the shower or make sure you know your chemicals and how they can react with other chemicals… Or p**s.

Pressure washers. The jet immediately penetrates the skin, injecting whatever’s inside the washer or lining the washer into the blood stream. Even new, first time use cases can cause severe damage to the body. Do NOT play with pressure washers.

Wet floors, usually bathrooms. Anything that can make hitting your head easier can kill.

Also, rotten potatoes exhale a gas that can be bad if you are in a closed room with a fairly large amount of them. It can kill within seconds.

Microwaves. There’s a reason they have a warning to not f**k with them even if they’re not plugged in- you can still absolutely get fried if you open it up to mess with it. You’re not safe just because it’s unplugged.

thewhitepearlreaper , Chris Lawrence Report

Cheap extension cords and power strips, especially ones without built in fail-safes that trip them if they are overloaded. The number of people who I see using those cheap, brown, dollar store extension cords, loading up every single available outlet, and leaving them plugged in 24/7 for years on end, makes me cringe.

Gas oven, we have cheapo oven where the stove top burner controls aren’t the ones you have to push in to release and adjust, the amount of times I have smelled the gas because someone brushed against the damn oven and slightly opened a valve on one of the burners…I’m just glad I have the doors open most of the time.

Don’t know if it counts but gas fireplace heaters are dangerous if they are not properly checked by a qualified maintenance tech, or in the case of my high school friend the gas appliance engineer took a bribe from the landlord’s son, and my friend died from carbon monoxide poisoning as a result, arseholes got suspended sentences but ten year probation.

rastagizmo Report

Every electrical appliance and outlet because it only takes about 10ma of current to start causing a heart to stop beating. And most homes have at least 100 amp main breakers and I know my place has a 200 amp main, they won’t pop when it kills you either.

Tons of the stuff in our homes has some sort of plastic in it. They get hot and can give off fumes that will at the very least make us sick and may even start to smoke but not be hot enough to cause the smoke to rise to set off a smoke detector.

nightshade00013 , BBJ- Report

Inserting a copper penny into a screw-in fuse box circuit as a “temporary measure” until replacement fuses can be obtained.

Back2Bach Report

Due to certifications like UL, and GFCI outlets in kitchens and bathrooms, there is way more safety built into things than decades ago. Certain woodworking tools are the first to come to mind, but most people realize they are dangerous. Using a table saw wrong and having it launch a board at your face? Or pulling yourself down onto it could easily cause fatal injuries if someone isn’t around to offer quick medical assistance. Lathes, mills, or drill presses can be super dangerous if they snag any loose clothing or hair and pull you in. It seems the people who are least aware of the danger are people who are fairly new to using them so they know the basics but end up overconfident and assume they know everything they need to know.

robotmonkeyshark Report

A stovetop espresso maker.

The method of operation is the water in the bottom chamber boils, and the steam pressure pushes up the hot water through the coffee grounds into the upper pot.

There is only one safety on these things, and it’s the valve on the water tank. If the water is filled too high so it covers the valve, you’ve made a pipe bomb. If the coffee is ground too fine or tamped and the safety valve is blocked it WILL explode and send boiling coffee and water everywhere.

Luckily this is very easily avoidable. Never fill the water over the safety valve, and never tamp the coffee in the basket.

windowpuncher Report

I remember all the boilers being super dangerous when I was younger. I can’t really remember why because they where being fazed out in the UK when I was growing up but it was either carbon monoxide or they could blow up

Yaboijustlikesgoats Report

Smoke detectors, if you forget to change the battery or you don’t check if your smoke detector is still working, undetected smoke at night when you are sleeping could kill you.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol).

OD’ing on it only takes about twice the amount on the box’s directions, which is very low compared to other common medications. Its negative effects are kidney failure, which starts with kidney pains, but quite quickly leads to a painful death.

It is scarily common. People first take Tylenol for a good reason but they take too much, so they start feeling kidney pain, so they take more Tylenol for that kidney pain, because they think it’s harmless and should help to feel good. By the time it gets bad enough that they go to the ER, they’re already dead, their body just doesn’t know it yet.

Always follow medication directions, particularly on Tylenol.

The Eve Motion is the first Thread motion sensor

Smart home company Eve continues its transition to Thread this week with the release of the second generation of its motion sensor. A wireless sensor that works over Thread and Bluetooth Low Energy, the Eve Motion is the first standalone motion sensor to use the Thread wireless protocol, which is a pillar of the new Matter smart home standard.

Today, the motion sensor will work with Apple HomeKit to trigger automations such as turning on connected smart lights or opening smart window shades. But when Matter arrives later this year, Eve says the motion sensor and all Eve’s Thread-based products will receive an over-the-air firmware update to be compatible with Matter. This will open the device to other Matter ecosystems, including Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings.

With Thread on board, this motion sensor should be significantly snappier than its Bluetooth-only predecessor. Thread is a mesh network that allows devices to communicate directly with each other rather than having to talk to a hub or bridge to receive commands. This translates to faster response time and lower latency. I’ve tested Eve’s Door & Window sensors in both Bluetooth and Thread versions, and the difference in response times was significant — going from 3 to 4 seconds to well under a second. It’s likely to be the same here, but we will be testing the sensor and will report back.

The Eve Motion works with Eve’s app and the Apple Home app.
Image: Eve

The new Eve Motion costs $39.95, which is $10 less than the previous version and its closest competitor, the Philips Hue Motion Sensor (which uses Zigbee and also monitors temperature). The Eve Motion is available today from the Eve online store and is coming to the Amazon and Apple stores later this year.

The Eve Motion’s dimensions are 2.56 x 2.56 x 1.34 inches.
Image: Eve

It can be wall-mounted and uses two AAA batteries.
Image: Eve

The sensor runs on two AAA batteries rather than two AA batteries, which means it’s significantly smaller than its predecessor, at 2.56 inches high. Interestingly, the second-gen model adds a luminosity sensor to monitor ambient light changes so you can set automations to respond to available light. It is also designed to work with Eve’s MotionBlinds to adjust the blinds’ levels according to the room’s brightness. Eve Motion is IPX3 rated, so it can be used outside in temperatures rated from 0 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

Today, you will need an iPhone or iPad to set up and control the Eve Motion and a HomePod or Apple TV (fourth gen or newer) to control it from outside your home. When Matter arrives, it will work with other ecosystems but will require a Thread border router for communication outside the home.

The HomePod Mini and Apple TV 4K (second gen) are Thread border routers, as are most Eero Wi-Fi routers. Amazon and Google have announced that the Echo smart speaker (fourth gen) and Nest Hub Max and Nest Hub (second-gen) will be upgraded to Thread border routers later this year.

This is Eve’s 14th Thread-enabled product release as it continues its commitment to embrace the new wireless protocol that is specifically designed for smart home devices. The company currently offers Thread versions of its Eve Energy smart plug, Eve Room air quality monitor, Eve Door & Window sensor, Eve MotionBlinds, Eve Weather station, Eve Aqua hose controller, and Eve Water Guard leak detector. In Europe, Eve also has a smart light switch and radiator valve that use Thread.

Boris Johnson’s leadership hangs by a thread after top resignations

A snap YouGov poll conducted Tuesday found that 69% of Britons surveyed want Johnson to resign. The poll of 3,009 adults found that only 18% want him to stay on.

LONDON — U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s leadership is hanging by a thread after the resignations of two of his most high-profile ministers and several other top officials and ministerial aides in the last 24 hours.

British Finance Minister Rishi Sunak resigned Tuesday evening, saying the government should be run “properly, competently and seriously.” Health Secretary Sajid Javid, likewise, resigned in protest against Johnson’s leadership, which has been beset by controversy and scandal in recent months.

As a number of senior Tories called for Johnson to quit, the government’s former Brexit negotiator David Frost also joined the fray, calling on the prime minister to step down without delay. In a newspaper column Wednesday, Frost echoed other critics of Johnson by stating emphatically that “it is time for him to go,” adding that “if he hangs on, he risks taking the party and the government down with him.”

Despite calls to resign, the prime minister shows no signs of being ready to stand down. Last night, he reshuffled his ministerial team to fill the vacancies created by the shock resignations.

Several ministers defended Johnson, expressing their loyalty to him. Top figures staying in the Cabinet include Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and Home Secretary Priti Patel.

Odds of a snap election

For now, the loyalty of top ministers, diminishes the immediate prospect of snap election in Britain. For that to happen, Johnson would have to resign or face another confidence vote. As he faced such a vote only last month, a new challenge would require a rule change to allow another vote within the next 12 months.

“Current party rules stipulate that Johnson cannot face another no-confidence vote until next summer. But the main risk now is either that those rules will be changed to force another vote, or Johnson is pressured to voluntarily step down,” Allan Monks, an economist at JPMorgan, said in a note Tuesday night.

“Events could move very quickly, with a Conservative leadership contest potentially putting in place a new Prime Minister in the next couple of months or so – ahead of the party’s annual conference in early October.”

Market response

Sterling fell to a new March 2020 low on Tuesday as the U.K.’s political instability played out. How markets react in the next few days will be closely watched.

“There’s paralysis and there’s so much uncertainty over how it will exactly play out,” Ben Emons, managing director of Global Macro Strategy at at Medley Global Advisors, told CNBC Wednesday.

“The way the markets responded, somewhat negatively as sterling and U.K. gilt yields fell, but then they recovered and I think that does indicate that as much as there’s uncertainty surrounding the Cabinet and Johnson’s position, it has not fallen apart, he does still have support,” he said.

“We’re not going to see any snap election, they have to elect a new leader for that to happen, so I think the markets take some comfort in [the fact that] we’re going to enter a period of some uncertainty but that uncertainty reflects the status quo, nothing will change in the economy or with policy,” he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe.”

String of scandals

The latest political upheaval to hit the U.K. comes after a series of controversies, ranging from the “partygate” scandal with Johnson and multiple other government officials who were found to have broken pandemic lockdown rules, to sleaze allegations — the latest of which involves Chris Pincher, the Conservative Party’s deputy chief whip, responsible for maintaining party discipline.

Pincher resigned and was suspended as a Conservative Party MP last week, following accusations that he drunkenly groped two men at a private members’ club. It has since emerged that Johnson appointed him to the role despite knowing of previous misconduct allegations against him.

Johnson apologized for appointing Pincher as deputy chief whip, but it was too little too late with the high-profile resignations coming just minutes after.

Johnson has survived a number of challenges to his leadership in recent months, as well as calls for him to resign, particularly following a bruising confidence vote and the Conservative Party’s loss of two key by-elections in the last month as the British public’s faith in its leader wears thin.

A snap YouGov poll conducted Tuesday found that 69% of Britons surveyed want Johnson to resign. The poll of 3,009 adults found that only 18% want him to stay on.

Among the Conservative voters polled, 54% said they want to see Johnson go, while 33% want him to stay on, showing that Johnson has become an unpopular figure for many voters initially attracted to his leadership in 2019, when he won a massive 80-seat majority on his election bid to “get Brexit done.”

Britain’s opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer tweeted on Tuesday that “the Tory party is corrupted and changing one man won’t fix that. Only a real change of government can give Britain the fresh start it needs.”

Nadhim Zahawi, Britain’s new finance minister, told Sky News on Wednesday that he backed the prime minister and said “the team in government today is the team that will deliver” but Ed Davey, the leader of the opposition Liberal Democrats, told CNBC that “it’s clearly in the national interest for Boris Johnson to go” and that Johnson had been proven to be deceitful in the past.

“Having someone as a British prime minister who clearly doesn’t tell the truth and who lies on an industrial scale, is damaging to our democracy, it’s damaging to Britain’s reputation around the world and it’s damaging for our investment … We need a government that knows what it’s doing.”

Johnson has been accused of lying on multiple occasions during his time in office though he has invariably denied doing so, and has denied misleading parliament over the “partygate” scandal, over which there is an ongoing inquiry.

Spiders Use Electric Fields to Fly, And We May Finally Know How

Having never evolved wings, many species of spider instead evolved an uncanny ability to take to the skies using nothing more than a few short threads of gossamer dangling from their dainty butts.

Just how this invertebrate answer to paragliding works has never been entirely clear, though historically biologists have assumed it probably has something to do with swirling eddies of warming air close to Earth’s surface.

An alternative suggestion is gaining attention, however, as evidence piles up in support of a rather steampunk mechanism. Instead of riding thermals, spiders might instead sail into the sky on tides of electricity.

Studies conducted by researchers from the University of Bristol in 2018 showed electric fields generated by weather activity could sufficiently drag a single electrostatically-charged strand of web and its aeronautical arachnid off the ground.

Now, a new study modeling the mathematics behind the electromagnetic interactions on multiple dangling spider threads has contributed important new details to the discussion.

This isn’t to say electric charges are necessarily responsible for the phenomenon scientists refer to as ballooning, either wholly or partially. But it does answer a bunch of questions on the actual physics at work.

The fact spiders can add a slight charge to their webs in order to catch prey (and potentially pick up pollutants) has been a focus of experimental studies for some time now.

Unfortunately, measuring the electrostatic activity of a short drift of thread is a lot harder to do under laboratory conditions.

So researchers kept things simple, by using simple modeling to determine how a single electrostatically charged thread spun from a spider’s bum might interact with an atmosphere’s own weakly charged field.

In reality, ballooning spiders can spin two, three, or even dozens of fine strands to get them up, up, and away. Just how each thread, coated in negatively-charged material, might interact with other threads is an open question.

To explore that question, physicists Charbel Habchi from Notre Dame University-Louaize in Lebanon, and Mohammad K. Jawed from the University of California, Los Angeles, combined measurements from previous studies with an algorithm commonly used in computerized graphics to trace hair.

Attaching between two and eight virtual hairs to a 2-millimeter-wide sphere that represented a tiny species of spider, they could tweak a range of variables such as the distribution of charge, atmospheric electric fields, and air resistance, and watch it fly.

At first, the threads all remained more or less vertical. But as the simulations unfolded, the negative charges along the threads pushed apart, expanding the collection of strands into an inverted cone-shape.

This in turn slowed their ascent, causing them to drop and the strands to collect together again, making tension between electrostatic repulsion and atmospheric drag an important factor in determining the thread-count of a spider balloon.

“We think that, at least for small spiders, the electric field, without any help from upward air currents, can cause ballooning,” Habchi told Rachel Berkowitz at Physics.

As for larger spiders, it’s possible a good kick from a rising air current might be necessary, implying the competing hypotheses behind spider-flight might not be so mutually exclusive after all.

Having a sound model is one thing. Backing it up experimentally will be more of a challenge.

On the other hand, if the mathematics works, it could be grounds for a new avenue of spider-inspired flight technology, used to send nanoscale drones out on Earth’s air currents or on far distant worlds.

This research was published in Physical Review E.
