Damar Hamlin update: As the Bills player remains in critical condition, Colts’ Rodney Thomas II details his bedside hospital visit

CNN
 —

As Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin remains in critical condition after suffering a mid-game cardiac arrest, his childhood friend and high school teammate, Indianapolis Colts safety Rodney Thomas II, says there is “no doubt in my mind” that Hamlin will recover.

Thomas drove directly to the hospital where Hamlin was being treated Monday night, where he said Hamlin lay sedated after being rushed from the field during the Bills’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“I know he could hear me,” Thomas said while speaking to reporters Wednesday. He said he was able to be in the room with Hamlin and hold his hand. “Even if he couldn’t hear me, it didn’t matter. I said what I had to say.”

The pair, who became close friends while teammates at their Pittsburgh high school, spoke daily and had talked earlier Monday before Hamlin’s collapse.

“It calmed me way down,” Thomas said of seeing his friend. “It made the trip home a lot easier. I could go home and know he’s gonna be straight. I got him. We all got him. Everybody’s behind him.”

Hamlin remains under intensive care at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center following his collapse during the first quarter of Monday night’s game, though he has been showing “signs of improvement” his team said in a statement Wednesday.

His heartbeat was restored on the field, the Bills have said, before he was carried from the stadium in an ambulance while stunned and visibly emotional players and fans looked on. Hamlin is on a ventilator and was “flipped over on his stomach” in the hospital to help relieve some of the strain on his lungs, his uncle Dorrian Glenn told CNN Tuesday.

Since his hospitalization, Hamlin has received a nationwide outpouring of support from fans and players across the sports world, including more than $7 million donated to his foundation’s toy drive GoFundMe as of Thursday morning. Several athletes have donned Hamlin’s number, 3, or his jersey while teams across the league have honored him through jumbotron messages and light displays at their stadiums.

The Bills-Bengals game was postponed after Hamlin’s collapse with the Bengals leading 7-3. The NFL is discussing how to handle the incomplete game – which will not be continued this week – but has yet to announce a strategy.

Initially regarded as an important late-season matchup with significant playoff implications, the showdown averaged 21.1 million viewers on ESPN during gameplay, according to Nielsen ratings. After Hamlin’s collapse, viewers grew to a historic 23.9 million, making the telecast the most watched “Monday Night Football” in ESPN history.

It is still unclear what caused Hamlin’s cardiac arrest, but NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills said the league will investigate what could have led to the player’s collapse during the game.

Any time a player is evacuated from the field, the NFL and its medical experts perform a detailed review of what happened, Sills explained on a call with reporters Wednesday. They also examine the role protective equipment may have played, he said.

In some cases, Sills said, the medical team will not be able to determine what caused the problem.

The doctor also addressed theories that the cardiac arrest could have been caused by commotio cordis, which occurs when severe trauma to the chest disrupts the heart’s electrical charge, causing dangerous fibrillations.

“You have to have the right type of blow hitting at the right spot on the chest with the right amount of force at just the right time in that cardiac cycle. So a lot of things have to line up for that to happen,” he said, emphasizing that while it is possible, investigators will consider all options.

Sills attributed the “transformational response” of medical personnel when Hamlin collapsed to the “60-minute meeting” that is held among medical teams and NFL officials before every game. During the meeting, teams identify the location of medical equipment and nearby medical centers, and establish a chain of command in case of an emergency, including cardiac arrest, among other things.

Hamlin’s collapse is the latest in a string of recent tragedies that have struck the community of Buffalo and and its beloved football team, including a racist mass shooting and a historic blizzard that left at least 41 people dead in Erie County, New York.

A high-ranking official within the Bills organization told CNN’s Coy Wire that they broke down in tears after day and night-long meetings on Tuesday, sobbing because of the heaviness of the situation.

The series of difficult blows to Buffalo have emotionally piled up within the organization, the source said, adding that through it all, the team has tried to be a source of strength for the city, the source tells Wire.

The source pointed to the performance of Buffalo Sabres hockey forward Tage Thompson on Tuesday night as a “glimmer of hope” at a time when the team needs inspiration.

Hamlin’s jersey number, 3, was a recurring motif throughout the game, played on January 3. Thompson’s three goals during overtime brought the Sabres a win. It was Thompson’s third hat trick of the season and his third goal came fortuitously in the third minute of overtime.

The Sabres also wore “Love for 3” t-shirts honoring Hamlin before the game.

Ginni Thomas told the January 6 committee it was ‘laughable’ for anyone who knew Clarence Thomas to believe she’d be able to ‘influence his jurisprudence’

  • Ginni Thomas affirmed that she did not speak with Clarence Thomas about 2020 election challenges.

  • On Friday, the conservative activist’s September testimony with the January 6 panel was released.

  • Thomas during her interview was unable to point to any specific instances of voter fraud in 2020.

Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, told the January 6 committee that it was “laughable” for anyone who knew her husband to believe that she could “influence” his judicial philosophy.

The conservative activist — who in September gave a voluntary interview to the House panel probing the January 6, 2021, riot at the United States Capitol — told the members that Clarence Thomas is “stubborn” and “uninterested in politics.”

“I am certain I never spoke with him about any of the legal challenges to the 2020 election, as I was not involved in those challenges in any way,” Ginni Thomas told the panel during her interview, noting that she had an “ironclad” household rule on not discussing pending court cases with Clarence Thomas. “Let me also add, it’s laughable for anyone who knows my husband to think I could influence his jurisprudence. The man is independent and stubborn, with strong character traits of independence and integrity.”

Ginni Thomas, who in the immediate aftermath of the 2020 presidential election exchanged texts with then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows where she pushed him to challenge now-President Joe Biden’s victory over then-President Donald Trump, said during her January 6 interview that she regretted sending the messages to the high-ranking Trump administration official.

“I regret all of these texts,” she told the committee during her closed-door testimony, which was released to the public on Friday. “It was an emotional time, and people were scared that there had been enough fraud happening that they weren’t going to get to the bottom of it. So that’s how I would look at that one.”

Ginni Thomas during her January 6 committee interview admitted that while she had concerns about voter fraud in the 2020 election, she couldn’t pinpoint specific cases of such malfeasance.

“I can’t say that I was familiar at the time with any specific evidence,” she told the members. “I was just hearing it from news reports and friends on the ground, grassroots activists who were inside of various polling places that found things suspicious.”

Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the Republican vice chair of the January 6 panel, then asked Ginni Thomas to confirm her lack of verifiable information about voting irregularities in 2020.

“Right. I know. I wasn’t very deep; I admit it,” she told Cheney.

“I was hearing it, Congresswoman, from a lot of people I trust. So trusted people were telling me there were problems, and I just thought there should be people at the state level investigating those before it was too late,” she added.

After the 2020 election, Thomas also emailed a range of GOP legislators in Arizona and Wisconsin — two key swing states where Biden narrowly outpaced Trump — where she also pushed them to help overturn Biden’s victory.

Ginni Thomas, well-known in GOP circles for decades, has only in the past few years become a larger figure in the public sphere, driven by her ties to prominent conservatives as her husband has taken a prominent role as a leader of the now-dominant conservative bloc on the Supreme Court.

With a 6-3 conservative majority on the high court, Justice Thomas’ judicial philosophy has taken on incredible significance as the conservative bloc is set to reshape some of the most pertinent issues in American society for the foreseeable future.

‘The Match’ live updates: Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy vs. Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth

The seventh iteration of Capital One’s “The Match” featured Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy teaming up against Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth for a 12-hole exhibition under the lights.

Woods made his first competitive appearance since the British Open in July. Just last week, the five-time Masters champion withdrew from the Hero World Challenge with a foot injury. “The Match” provided each player with a cart—equipped with microphones and cameras—making the made-for-TV event feasible for Woods.

McIlroy and Spieth made their debuts in “The Match,” while Thomas returned for the first time as a competitor (he previously participated as a commentator).

Here’s how it played out at Pelican Golf Club:

Hole 10: Spieth Ends It

Spieth drove it in the pine straw, but hit a wildly impressive shot from the tough position to eight feet. Woods put himself 25 feet from the pin, and was disappointed, but then McIlroy stuck a wedge. Thomas went with a sweeping draw spinner, causing his ball to rip to the left once it hit the green. The whole sequence was a shot-shaping clinic.

McIlroy drained his short-range putt so then the stage was wide open for Spieth to clinch the match. He did just that. Thomas and Spieth defeated McIlroy and Woods, 3 and 2.

Overall, “The Match” generated $2,605,000 for Hurricane Ian relief.

Hole 9: A Push and a Dig at Tiger

The 9th hole was the second closest-to-the-pin challenge of the day. The foursome again fell short of the $100,000 bonus donation to Hurricane Ian relief efforts, because all four players did not hit the green. Thomas ended up in the greenside bunker.

After Thomas hit his bunker shot—which came up short—Barkley complimented his calf muscles. Thomas then chimed in, saying, “Tiger, tell us about your calves.”

“I’ve got a great calf,” said Woods. “Singular,” added Immelman.

The hilarious interaction was followed by the group pushing again. Woods and McIlroy will head to the 10th hole 3 down with three to play, meaning they have a chance to tie Thomas and Spieth if they win all of the remaining holes.

Hole 8: Thomas Sinks Another To Go Back to 3 Up

At the second “Hole In One Challenge,” Woods and Thomas stuck their tee shots tight, while Spieth and McIlroy had distance control issues, getting stuck up in the fringe long of the green.

After Spieth’s slightly misjudged tee shot we heard a pressing question from various members of the foursome, “Where is Michael Greller?” Spieth has to be missing the legendary caddie at least a little bit right now.

McIlroy missed, Spieth just left his short, and Woods misread his attempt. Thomas, however, stepped up and drained his birdie.

“You hate to see it!” Spieth exclaimed once again.

Hole 7: An Opening for Woods and McIlroy

McIlroy sprayed another drive, but this time made an excellent tree-weaving escape with a wood. For the first time all day the four-time major champion looked satisfied with a shot.

Then there was some commotion in the fairway: After Woods hit his second shot, he pulled up to Spieth and Thomas. Thomas, fearing a disruption from the 15-time major champion, hijacked Woods’ cart keys. But he didn’t think of everything—Woods was still able to sound the annoyingly loud reverse button to distract his competitor.

When the foursome reached the green it was McIlroy and Thomas’ mid-range birdie putts that were left to decide the hole. A make from McIlroy and a miss from Thomas gave this match some newfound allure.

“An opening,” said Woods walking off the green.

Hole 6: Thomas’s Near Miss Means Another Push

All four players found fairway on the 526-yard par-4, but Pelican Golf Club is a second-shot golf course. Thomas and Spieth continued to put themselves in prime position with their approaches, while Woods and McIlroy lagged behind. Thomas stuck his iron shot to inside 8 feet, while Spieth hit it to 20 feet. McIlroy missed the green, and Woods ended up a yard or so into the fringe.

The comment of the hole came just before Woods made his birdie attempt. TNT broadcaster Brian Anderson said, “Tiger gets a stroke here,” prompting Thomas to quickly chime in “please don’t piss him off, guys.”

Woods ultimately did not convert the long-range putt, but it barely missed—and the GOAT did not look happy about it. McIlroy then stepped up to his 12-foot par putt, only for Thomas and Spieth to say “that’s good” as he was standing over the ball. In a turn of events, Thomas missed his 7-footer for birdie. The pair remain 3 up.

Hole 5: Tiger and Rory Momentarily Stop The Bleeding

The “Hole In One Challenge” unfortunately did not produce any aces, but it did give team Woods/McIlroy a push. Spieth, Thomas, and Woods couldn’t convert their birdie opportunities, leaving the stage open for McIlroy to get one back. The Irishman caught a nasty lip-out to leave his team down 3.

Announcer Charles Barkley summed up this moment in “The Match” perfectly, saying “We better make it to 12 holes because TNT has another 752 commercials to air.”

Hole 4: Thomas Makes Miraculous One-Club Par to Go 3 Up

Woods, McIlroy, Thomas, and Spieth really put the “challenge” into the “One-Club Challenge” on the 455-yard par-4 5th.

On the tee Spieth had honors for choice and took 4-iron, JT took 5-wood, Rory took 3-iron and Tiger wouldn’t immediately say what he had.

Spieth missed the fairway, McIlroy landed in a divot, Thomas ended up on the right side of the fairway, and Tiger hit a sweeping snap hook on command.

From there, chaos ensued. McIlroy chunked his 3-iron, forcing him to then punch out from pine straw after his third shot stopped up against a golf cart. Spieth gave himself opportunity for a 60-yard bump and run to reach the green in three, as did Woods (after two more golf carts were moved out of his line). But Thomas’ hole was perhaps the most entertaining. After launching his approach over the green (again next to a golf cart!), Spieth and on-course commentator Kathryn Tappen helped lift a rope for Thomas to hit underneath. The shot was masterful—Thomas then clinched par by sinking a 6 footer with his wood, helping his team go 3 up.

Hole 3: JT & Jordan Go 2 Up

The third hole par 3 brought the first of several challenges, this one being a closest-to-the-pin competition. Spieth ran away with the win, sticking it to 15 feet and draining the left to right slider.

The highlight of the hole, however, was at its conclusion, when Thomas gave the group some flak for continuously forgetting to grab the pin. We knew there would be some noticeable differences without caddies present, but this issue was unforeseen.

Hole 2: JT Drains Birdie Putt to Go 1 Up

The second hole was not the foursome’s prettiest, with Woods and Thomas expressing frustration with their approach shots.

But a perfectly executed lag putt from Thomas cleaned it up. The two-time PGA Champion gave a shrug as he walked towards the hole, while Spieth exclaimed, “You hate to see it.”

Hole 1: JT, Tiger Tie With Birdies

The first hole of “The Match” did not disappoint, with all four players surrounding the green with bombed drives. On the tee we even got a Trevor Immelman jab from Spieth. “Sorry Trevor,” the three-time major champion said after being announced as having a 5-0 Presidents Cup record (Immelman captained the 2022 President’s Cup International Team).

JT and Tiger both chipped their second shots close, getting up-and-down for birdie.

Spieth/JT Installed as Betting Favorites

The pre-Match odds on DraftKings have Tiger/Rory at +100 (even money) to win and Spieth/Thomas favored to win at -120.

It would seem unusual that the world No. 1 is part of the underdog team, but Tiger’s physical condition factors into the odds as well as the fact that Spieth/Thomas have had plenty of success as a team over the years.

Phil Chimes In

Phil Mickelson may not be involved with “The Match” franchise anymore due to his affiliation with LIV Golf, but he will be watching tonight. The man who had a major hand in the creation of the made-for-TV golf series tweeted his support of the event on Saturday evening.

Thomas James: Navy petty officer who helped disarm Colorado nightclub shooter speaks out for first time

CNN
 —

Thomas James, one of the two men who helped disarm a shooter during last week’s mass shooting inside Club Q in Colorado Springs, issued his first statement about his role in the attack on Sunday.

“I simply wanted to save the family I found,” James, a US Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class, said in a statement. “If I had my way, I would shield everyone I could from the nonsensical acts of hate in the world, but I am only one person. Thankfully, we are family, and family looks after one another. We came a long way from Stonewall. Bullies aren’t invincible.”

“I want to support everyone who has known the pain and loss that have been all too common these past few years. My thoughts are with those we lost on Nov. 19, and those who are still recovering from their injuries.”

“To the youth I say be brave. Your family is out there. You are loved and valued. So, when you come out of the closet, come out swinging,” he added.

James remains in stable condition at Centura Penrose Hospital, according to an update from the hospital. The hospital said he is focusing on his recovery and will not be conducting media interviews at this time.

The comments represent his first public statement since he and Richard Fierro, an Army veteran, helped take down a shooter firing at patrons at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado on November 19. Five people were killed and at least 19 were wounded in the attack, according to police.

The shooter was tackled to the ground by Fierro, who had been celebrating a birthday at the club with family and friends. Another person, identified by police as James, pushed a rifle out of the shooter’s reach while Fierro struck and subdued the shooter with the other firearm they had, a handgun.

Fierro, who spoke to CNN’s Jim Acosta on Saturday, has expressed his deep appreciation for the community’s support as his family’s brewery reopened the day after Thanksgiving.

“It was a beautiful, beautiful day,” Fierro told CNN’s Jim Acosta Saturday. “I couldn’t thank enough people. I tried to thank everyone that walked through the door.”

“I’m not a hero,” Fierro added. “Everyone else in that room was a hero with us and everybody’s got a hero story to just try and survive.”

Man who beat gunman during mass shooting got a big surprise at his business

Fierro’s daughter’s boyfriend, 22-year-old Raymond Green Vance, has been identified by authorities as among those killed in the shooting. The suspected shooter is being held in custody without bond and faces five preliminary counts of first-degree murder and five counts of a bias-motivated crime – elsewhere called a hate crime – causing bodily injury, according to court documents.

President Joe Biden called Fierro and his wife, Jessica, Tuesday, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said, explaining the president wanted to thank Fierro for his “courageous actions” and “instinct to act” in thwarting the attack and saving lives.

Fierro told CNN Saturday he was “humbled” by the call.

“At the end of the day, I wish everybody could talk to him, and just to have that honor. I’m an old soldier, so for me just to talk to a commander-in-chief is a big deal,” he said.

Biden told reporters Thursday he would again attempt to work with Congress to “get rid of assault weapons.” When asked about the national conversation around firearms, Fierro said he has respect for such weapons from his training as a soldier and wants to see a different mentality regardless of where the gun debate turns next.

“I would just like people to stop having so much anger. It shouldn’t be something this tense. There’s no reason for somebody to go to a dance club or a show or anything and have to worry about being shot,” he said.

For Friday’s reopening of the Atrevida Beer Company in Colorado Springs – of which he and his wife are owners – Fierro said he was most heartened by those in attendance.

“It was more beautiful as a person to see the variance, the difference, the diversity, the inclusion of everyone there. Everybody in the same room just having some joy and enjoying a beer.”

Ginni Thomas, other conservatives call on GOP to delay leadership elections

Comment

Dozens of conservative leaders are calling on Republican lawmakers to postpone their leadership elections until next month, echoing the demands of several frustrated Senate and House Republicans after a much-hyped “red wave” did not materialize in the midterm elections.

In an open letter Monday to Republican members of Congress, 72 conservative leaders said that “there should be no rushed leadership elections,” pointing to the fact that several congressional races remain to be called and that the Senate race in Georgia will go to a runoff.

“The Republican Party needs leaders who will confidently and skillfully present a persuasive coherent vision of who we are, what we stand for, and what we will do,” the letter stated.

It continued: “Conservative Members of the House and Senate have called for the leadership elections to be delayed. We strongly urge both Houses of Congress to postpone the formal Leadership elections until after the December 6 runoff in Georgia and all election results are fully decided.”

Signatories included Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, a lawyer and the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas; Matt Schlapp, chairman of the Conservative Political Action Coalition; and Mark Meadows, who was chief of staff in the Trump White House. Axios first reported on the letter.

The House GOP is scheduled to hold its leadership elections Tuesday, while the Senate GOP is to vote on leadership Wednesday. Republican leaders in both chambers have pushed back on calls to delay the votes. Several members of the House Freedom Caucus, who are staunch supporters of former president Donald Trump, have already said they will not support House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.).

Nevertheless, McCarthy launched his campaign for the speakership last week, sending a letter to his Republican colleagues in which he said he felt “confidently” that the GOP would achieve its goal of taking back control of the House.

“I trust you know that earning the majority is only the beginning,” McCarthy wrote. “Now, we will be measured by what we do with our majority. Now, the real work begins. That is why I am running to serve as Speaker of the People’s House and humbly ask for your support.”

In the Senate, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has also faced criticism and calls to postpone the leadership vote.

“I don’t know why Senate GOP would hold a leadership vote for the next Congress before this election is finished,” Sen. Josh Hawley (Mo.) wrote on Twitter, joining several other Republicans, including Sens. Rick Scott (Fla.), Marco Rubio (Fla.), Mike Lee (Utah), Cynthia M. Lummis (Wyo.) and Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.), in a push for the vote to be postponed until after the Dec. 6 runoff between Sen. Raphael G. Warnock (D) and Republican Herschel Walker.

Sen. John Barrasso (Wyo.), the Senate GOP conference chairman, has said the election will be held Wednesday.

Democratic lawmakers remained confident on Nov. 13 after their party won control of the Senate, even though control of the House remains unknown. (Video: The Washington Post)

House Democrats will hold their leadership elections starting Nov. 30. In interviews on political talk shows Sunday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) declined to say whether she would run for the speakership again if Democrats retain control of the House — for which there is a slim possibility.

Control of the House remained in the balance Monday, with neither party yet securing the 218 seats required to take the majority. Most of the uncalled congressional races are in California, where ballots are valid as long as they were postmarked by Election Day and where final election tallies could take weeks to determine.

Alvin Kamara: It “irks my soul” to see people criticize Michael Thomas

Getty Images

This week, Saints head coach Dennis Allen announced that receiver Michael Thomas is likely out for the year due to a toe injury that requires surgery.

Thomas had been out since Week Three after he missed much of the 2020 season and all of the 2021 season with an ankle injury.

The news prompted some to criticize Thomas for not being available due to injury. That’s something Saints running back Alvin Kamara took exception to, as he told reporters on Friday.

“For people to be talking shit, it irks my soul to see that,” Kamara said, via Luke Johnson of the New Orleans Advocate.

“Out of anyone in this locker room Mike is fighting to play,” Kamara added, via Erin Summers of the team’s website. “[H]e even wanted to play last week with the injury.”

Especially considering Thomas’ 2019 season — in which he caught 149 passes for 1,725 yards with nine touchdowns — the receiver’s injuries since have been unfortunate. Kamara is right to defend his teammate against the unfair injury criticism, though he should never feel compelled to do so in the first place.

Jury finds Trump friend Thomas Barrack not guilty on all counts in foreign lobbying trial

A New York jury Friday found Trump confidant and billionaire Thomas Barrack not guilty of all charges in his trial on federal foreign lobbying allegations.

Barrack, a 75-year-old investor who was an adviser to former President Donald Trump and chair of his Inaugural Committee, was accused of using his connections to Trump’s administration to try to sway U.S. foreign policy for a client, the United Arab Emirates.

Outside the Brooklyn federal courthouse Barrack lauded the jury and invoked “Lady Justice.”

“The system is amazing. People are amazing. I have no hostility, I’m just proud to be an American,” Barrack said, adding later that he is “done with politics.”

“Let’s stop fighting with each other. Let stop all the politicalization of everything, whoever the president is,” Barrack said to reporters before teens playing music on handheld speakers walked by. Barrack stopped talking briefly, put his hands in the air, and danced.

Prosecutors portrayed Barrack as a businessman “campaigning for cash,” out to use his White House ties to add a lucrative client to his investment portfolio. Barrack’s defense said he was using his ties to the Middle East and the presidential administration to try to mediate disputes in a volatile but crucial region, an attempt to cap off a storied international investment career.

The jurors, impaneled since Sept. 19, deliberated for two days before reaching their verdict.

Barrack pleaded not guilty to charges of acting as an unregistered foreign agent for the UAE, obstruction of justice and making false statements to the FBI.

Prosecutors showed the jury text messages and emails sent during in 2016 and 2017, during the presidential campaign and the early days of the Trump administration, in which Barrack and an employee of his firm, Colony Capital, appeared to relay talking points related to a “wish list” of UAE priorities. Barrack and the employee, Michael Grimes, communicated through a middleman with Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a sheik who is the UAE’s national security advisor, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Barrack’s and Grimes’ efforts garnered $374 million in new investments from a UAE sovereign wealth fund for their firm. Their defense said there was nothing illegal about their efforts to attract new investments, and noted that figure represented just 1% of the investment portfolio managed by Barrack’s former company, which is now known as DigitalBridge.

Grimes, 29, was also charged in the case. The jury found him not guilty of charges he acted as an unregistered foreign agent.

The alleged middleman, an Emirati citizen who had been living in California, Rashid al Malik, was also charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent. Al Malik has not been located by authorities.

After the verdict, Grimes said he felt “grateful” to the jurors and his parents, who attended the trial daily and “who stood by me every single day.”

“I’m grateful to live in the United States to have the opportunity to stand before a judge who’s fair and impartial and a jury of my peers who reached the conclusion of what it should be. And that is the truth,” Grimes said.

Asked what’s next, he said, “offense,” without elaborating.

Outside the courtroom, prosecutors walked by without comment.

Barrack spent the final six days of the trial on the stand, testifying in his own defense. He described his communications with UAE officials about the Trump administration as “puffery” and attempts to mediate disputes.

The jury also heard testimony from two Trump administration officials, former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, called by Barrack’s defense, and former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, called by the government.
