The CW’s 2022 Cancellations Because of Mergers and Streaming

Image: The CW

For fans of the CW’s original programming, it’s a been rough couple of days. Not only have fan favorites like Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman been abruptly canceled, earlier this week the network bid farewell to other series including Naomi, Charmed, and Roswell, New Mexico. There’ll still be some original content coming out for the 2022-23 season, including Gotham Knights and Supernatural’s prequel series The Winchesters, but for a network that let some of its series go on for quite awhile, the culling has been nothing short of shocking. Add to that the news of Warners and CBS Studios are currently attempting to sell off the network, and it feels safe to say that the network may look pretty different after the 2022-23 season.

The Hollywood Reporter published an investigative piece on Friday detailing the CW’s recent events, and it all basically comes down to money. In 2011, current network owners Warners and CBS Studios struck a partnership with Netflix to bring their series to that platform. (A season of The Flash, for example, would arrive on Netflix a week after its season finale aired.) International rights also contributed to the network’s rise during the 2010s, allowing them to air original series on Friday and Sunday nights, and contributed to the renewals of several shows over the years. Ever wonder why Riverdale keeps on going? It’s because internationally, it’s considered a “Netflix Original” and is treated like a relative big deal on the platform.

But in 2019, Warners and CBS Studios, who are now overseen by Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global thanks to recent mergers, ended their deal with Netflix in favor of their respective streaming systems HBO Max and Paramount+. As a result, the Netflix revenue went away, and their international has been slowly dwindling as the focus has been on building up these newer platforms. Legends, along with other cancelled shows like Charmed and Roswell, were all included in that original Netflix deal. But now that the shows included in that deal are gone, nearly all of the CW series for the 2022-23 season will be available to stream on The CW’s website and their app, CW Seed, which is said to be of “particular interest” to those looking to buy the network.

Fans who’ve spent their time recently taking to social media in the hopes their favorite show will get renewed or picked up by HBO Max or Paramount+ may be out of luck. Further in the Reporter’s piece, they reveal that the streamers couldn’t snatch up a show like Legends or the also canceled Vampire Diaries spinoff Legacies due to their being packaged into that Netflix deal. While characters from Legends and Batwoman have a chance to show up in the still airing Superman & Lois or The Flash, that may be as far as they get. By all accounts, and unless those fandoms can work their magic, those shows are dead and gone.

“Truth and Consequences” Preview Released

The CW has released a preview for “Truth and Consequences”, the eleventh episode of Superman & Lois‘ second season. The series returned this week after a several week break and caught viewers up to speed on everything they needed to know about the Inverse World, including Jon El (Jordan Elsass) who showed up at the end of “30 Days and 30 Nights”. And what they needed to know was pretty grim: Ally Alston, having merged with herself, sent Jon to find and merge with Earth-Prime’s Jonathan Kent and if Lois’ scream in the preview — which you check out for yourself below — is any sign, Jonathan Kent may be in real trouble.

Jon El’s plans definitely fit in what Jordan Kent actor Alex Garfin previously teased in terms of major problems that “Bizarro Jonathan” would cause in Smallville.

“Bizarro Jonathan really starts to screw things up,” Garfin said. “Also, you have to remember that he’s their son, but he’s not really their son. It’s a bit of that Natalie syndrome that we had, only this time he seems like he’s a little evil. That’s gonna be an interesting mix of emotions for everyone involved. Also, Jordan Elsass idolizes Heath Ledger’s performance in The Dark Knight, so I was really happy to see that he gets to play a villain, because he’s been wanting to do that since day one, so I’m glad they gave that to him.”

The episode will see the return of Arrow star David Ramsey, though this time he’ll be behind the camera directing. Ramsey previously directed Season 1’s “Man of Steel” and Season 2’s “The Ties That Bind” as well. You can check out the episode synopsis for yourself below.

“DAVID RAMSEY (“ARROW”) DIRECTS THE EPISODE – We pick up right where we left off with Jon-El (Jordan Elsass) smirking at Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch), who is still standing on the porch with Jordan (Alex Garfin). Jon-El, catches sight of his doppelganger Jonathan (Jordan Elsass), standing not too far away. He lunges at him, and Jordan tries to intervene but Jon-El appears to be stronger and faster than him. Tyler Hoechlin, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Dylan Walsh, Erik Valdez, Inde Navarrette, Wole Parks, Sofia Hasmik and Taylor Hack also star. The episode was directed by David Ramsey and written by Andrew N. Wong.”

Superman & Lois airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW. “Truth and Consequences” will air on May 3rd.

The Power Of The Dog on Netflix

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Wednesday, December 1. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

The Power Of The Dog (Netflix, 3:01 a.m.): “Westerns have been deconstructing toxic masculinity for ages. The Thomas Savage novel on which The Power Of The Dog is based got there way back in 1967. But [director] Jane Campion approaches the task with a sensual touch few of her peers possess—and with an equally uncommon understanding of where humanity’s darkest and most transcendent impulses intersect. In The Power Of The Dog, ordinary life is a soap bubble that can burst at the slightest touch. Campion’s films frequently use families to explore the commingling of personal and political violence, and The Power Of The Dog fits this mold.” Here is Katie Rife’s complete review of the film, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Regular coverage

Hawkeye (Disney+, 3:01 a.m.)
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia (FXX, 10 p.m., season 15 premiere): The comedy returns after a two-year break with a two-episode premiere, titled “2020: A Year In Review” and “The Gang Makes Lethal Weapon 7.” Two new episodes will air every Wednesday until the season finale on December 22. Dennis Perkins will recap.
DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow (The CW, 8 p.m.): In lieu of a regular episode, Legends ups the game with a holiday special called Beebo Saves Christmas. The cast additions include Chris Kattan, Yvette Nicole Brown, Keith Ferguson, while Victor Garber returns to narrate the hour. Keep an eye out for Sam Barsanti’s coverage of the episode

Wild cards

Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas (Roku, 3:01 a.m.): NBC’s loss is Roku’s gain. The broadcast network canceled Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist earlier this year after two seasons, but Roku snatched it up for a one-off holiday special. The film picks up after the finale, as Zoey (Jane Levy) navigates her familial and romantic relationships. The musical dramedy also stars Mary Steenburgen, Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, Peter Gallagher, and Bernadette Peters. Meanwhile, both seasons of Zoey’s are available for a free and heartwarming binge on Roku.

Lost In Space (Netflix, 3:01 a.m.): In the third and final season of this sci-fi drama, the stakes are higher than ever for the Robinson family. After a year of being trapped on a mysterious planet, they must lead the 97 young Colonists in a harrowing evacuation. John (Toby Stephens) and Maureen (Molly Parker) battle overwhelming odds as they try to reunite with their kids. The cast includes Taylor Russell, Mina Sundwall, and Douglas Hodge. Season three consists of eight episodes.

Fruitcake Fraud (Discovery+, 3:01 a.m.): Enjoy your holiday celebration with a side of notorious fraud. This Discovery+ true-crime special covers the case of husband and wife Sandy and Kay Jenkins, who embezzled over $17 million in a decade from the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, Texas, where Sandy worked as an accountant. The bakery is known for its fruitcakes, selling up to 20,000 per day during the holiday season. The 90-minute special traces how the duo were able to go undetected for several years, and how the case baffled the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s office once it was revealed.

HBO opens The White Lotus

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Sunday, July 11. All times are Eastern.

Top picks

The White Lotus (HBO, 9 p.m., limited series premiere): Here’s Saloni Gajjar on this buzzy new series from the creator of Enlightened: “Created by Mike White, The White Lotus is set in an exclusive Hawaiian resort… The stacked cast includes Connie Britton, Steve Zahn, and Insecure’s Natasha Rothwell, who plays the resort spa’s massage therapist and forms a possibly unhealthy bond with one of her clients, played by the one and only Jennifer Coolidge. With each passing day, a darker complexity emerges in the lives of these seemingly picture-perfect travelers and cheerful employees.”

Read more about The White Lotus and other new shows coming to your TV this month in our July TV preview. Roxana Hadadi’s recaps will run weekly.

Wellington Paranormal (The CW, 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., U.S. premiere): Grab yourself some normal human alcohols and settle in to once again slip into the absurd world of camera-ready vampires and whatnot.

The CW, rightly eager to get into the Jemaine Clement/Taika Waititi business, snapped up this spinoff of their 2014 film What We Do In The Shadows, which as you might have heard already spawned another corker. Look for Danette Chavez’s review soon on the site.

Regular coverage

DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow (The CW, 8 p.m.)
Kevin Can F**k Himself (AMC, 9 p.m.): A reminder that our coverage is following the AMC release schedule, rather than that of AMC+, so tonight’s recap will be for episode five, “New Patty.”
Rick And Morty (Adult Swim, 11 p.m.)

Wild cards

Run The World (Starz, 8:30 p.m., first-season finale): “A great deal of Run The World’s premise centers on the towering burdens placed upon Black women by society, within the Black community, and of course, the expectations they place upon themselves. Though the characters are imperfect, they continue to push back against society’s desire to humble Black women or make them feel grateful for positions and roles they’ve painstakingly earned… Run The World offers a lovely window into the lives of four Black women. It’s honest, witty, and at times heartbreaking. As in real life, the women at the center of the series know that they can hold on to one another when all else fails.” Read the rest of Aramide Tinubu’s pre-air review.

Shark Week (discovery+ and Discovery, running throughout the week): Shark Week is starting, and NatGeo’s Sharkfest hasn’t stopped swimming either, so this is a fine time to be a person who likes watching shark stuff on TV. Today’s highlights include Song Of The Shark (discovery+, 3:01 a.m.), the series premiere of Shark Academy (discovery+, 3:01 a.m.), and Tiffany Haddish Does Shark Week (Discovery, 9 p.m.).

History Of The Sitcom (CNN, 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., series premiere): This eight-part docuseries “reunites audiences with the television friends, families, and co-workers they grew up with while introducing cutting-edge comedies that are sure to be your next binge-watch.” Expect interviews with Norman Lear, Tina Fey, Lisa Kudrow, Kim Fields, Dick Van Dyke, Jason Alexander, Mel Brooks, and Ted Danson, among (many) others.

Professor T (PBS, 10 p.m., series premiere): Sound the cozy mystery klaxon, a British eccentric is solving crimes on the telly!
