Great Cyber Monday phone deals that’ll make you glad the internet exists

Refresh

Even before you consider a smartwatch to pair with your new Android phone, you might want to grab a set of wireless earbuds instead. It’s the perfect time to ditch the wires, as there are so many different great options to choose from, plus, there aren’t very many smartphones that even still include a headphone jack.

Headlining some of our favorite Cyber Monday deals for earbuds is the Google Pixel Buds Pro. These were highly anticipated, as the Pixel Buds and Pixel Buds A-Series lacked features found on some of the best wireless earbuds. Google finally brought Active Noise Cancelation, an adjustable EQ, while retaining a familiar design. And if you can still find these in stock, you’ll be able to save $50, getting the Buds Pro for just $150.

This one might be controversial, but if you just want incredible wireless earbuds, Apple’s AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) are still arguably the best of the best. Since these still just rely on Bluetooth you can connect them to any of your devices, and there are some third-party apps to control things like the ANC levels and gesture controls. Best of all, these are under $200 for the first time since Apple released its latest earbuds earlier this year.

When you think of great budget phones, Motorola’s vast lineup of devices is almost always at or near the top of the list. While the company seems to be looking to get back into the flagship market, budget phones still reign supreme, and the Moto G Stylus is the perfect example of that.

With the exception of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Motorola seized an opportunity to offer a budget-friendly phone that also includes a stylus. Currently, the 2022 version of the G Stylus, which features 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a triple camera setup, can be had for 40% off, priced at $180.

And while some parts of the world can enjoy Motorola’s latest attempt at a foldable phone, that’s not the case here in the States. Thankfully, the Motorola Razr 5G is still kicking around, and as part of the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals, you can get a folding phone for just $600.

On one hand, it’s pretty darn great that Android is getting to the point where the software optimization means we can have phones that last all day long (and then some). But there’s nothing worse than being away from a charger and having your phone run out of juice before you make it home.

We’re already seeing some pretty great early Cyber Monday deals on portable chargers, headlined by the Shargeek Storm 2 Slim. Shargeek has come out of nowhere with its portable charger that sports a “unique see-through design with yellow accents.” It reaches charging speeds up to 130W, and you can save $70 at Amazon for a limited time.

Anker’s portable chargers are still among the best of the best, and this point has been driven home even further following the release of the GaNPrime lineup of portable chargers. We’re seeing quite a few different deals on Anker chargers, but our two favorites are for the Anker 737 PowerCore and the Anker 733. With the former, you can save $50, and the latter is on sale for $25 off.

OnePlus may not be the “darling” phone maker that it once was, but that doesn’t mean the company has stopped releasing phones that offer incredible value. A perfect example of this is the OnePlus Nord N200 5G, which is easily one of the cheapest 5G phones on the market, and as part of some early Cyber Monday deals, it can be yours for just $170. Or you can bundle the Nord N200 with the new OnePlus Nord Buds for just over $200.

Those who are looking for a flagship Android phone will want to check out either the OnePlus 10T or the OnePlus 10 Pro. With the former, you’re getting OnePlus’ latest flagship, powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. The 6.7-inch Fluid Display sports a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, while also supporting HDR10+. There are two configurations available, but the 8GB/128GB model offers a much better value coming in at $575 for Cyber Monday.

Rounding out the latest deals on OnePlus phones is the OnePlus 10 Pro, which first arrived in the U.S. in March following a limited China-only release in January. The 10 Pro is also powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, which is paired with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. But the best deal this time around is for the base model, as it’s discounted by $250 at both Amazon and Best Buy.

Need a premium-grade phone at a lower price? The Google Pixel 7 is exactly what you’re looking for, then. At $499 this amazing Cyber Monday weekend deal takes $100 off the already great regular price, making it one of the better buys right now.

Amazon and Best Buy have the same deals and while they both accept trade-ins, Best Buy’s program generally offers a bit more for your old phone than Amazon will. You can even get one for free at AT&T if you’ve got an old phone to trade in. Otherwise, Verizon’s buy-one-get-one-free deal is another phenomenal choice.

The Google Pixel 7 (opens in new tab) packs one of the best phone cameras into a newly redesigned body that’s sleeker than ever. The new Google Tensor G2 processor enables even more AI-powered features than the Pixel 6 had, including the new Photo Unblur utility which can take old photos — yes, even ones taken from other cameras or phones — and effectively unblur them by using AI trickery onboard the processor. It doesn’t work for every photo but it’s some serious magic when it does.

While the Pixel 7 doesn’t have a telephoto sensor, the more expensive Google Pixel 7 Pro (opens in new tab) certainly does. The new 5x periscope camera enables the Pixel 7 Pro to zoom in clearly up to 30x away, and Google’s intelligent machine-learning techniques can make those photos look clearer than other phones with the same zoom capabilities. All in all, this is a great reason to pick up a Pixel 7 family phone.

Need a case for your newly purchased Google Pixel 6a? Thankfully, those are also on sale for this Cyber Monday weekend. Cases like the Tudia MergeGrip in Green Lily (pictured above) perfectly compliment the Pixel 6a’s great color scheme and really add to the experience.

Some of my personal favorites can be found in the links above, and while none of them have mind-blowing sales going on — most cases aren’t very expensive to begin with, after all — it’s still great to get a few bucks off something you definitely need.

If none of those tickle your fancy, check out our best Google Pixel 6a cases (opens in new tab) for the ultimate range of options.

(Image credit: Nicholas Sutrich / Android Central)

If you thought you missed the best Black Friday deal, don’t worry, it’s not over yet. That’s right, you can still get the Google Pixel 6a (opens in new tab) for an incredible $299 from either Amazon or Best Buy, the latter of which might be the best place to catch this deal since you can walk into a store right now and pick up the phone.

In short, $300 for a Pixel 6a is almost a criminally good deal. This one packs in the same Google Tensor processor that was in the more expensive Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, as well as two great cameras on the back: one main camera and one ultra-wide-angle camera.

As you would expect, photos and videos from this Pixel phone will blow you away every single time, and Google Tensor’s processing prowess means that moving kids or pets will still come out with clear faces thanks to Face Unblur technology. Seriously, it feels like magic every time you watch it at work.

At this price, the Pixel 6a is the phone of the year because of the incredible value it brings. There’s really no underselling it. If you don’t need 100x space zoom or some other niche feature, there’s simply no reason to buy another phone in 2022.

Best Buy has a load of great Samsung cases on sale to go along with your new foldable phone purchase. My personal favorite of the bunch, pictured above, is the Samsung Standing Cover case for the Z Fold 4 which includes the fabled S Pen that sits nicely in a holster on the back of the case. You can always swap this out for a kickstand if you prefer, but both come in the box for a cool $27 off (opens in new tab).

Or maybe you just need some basic protection without any extra fuss? Samsung’s Slim case for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is $15 off (opens in new tab) and offers great protection for your new foldable without adding much weight or bulk.

While Samsung focuses more on productivity or normal-style cases for the Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4 users get to have a lot more fun. Both the silicone cover with strap (opens in new tab) and silicone cover with ring (opens in new tab) are $12 through the end of Cyber Monday in stores and offer some great alternatives to the boring old case designs we’ve had for years.

(Image credit: Nicholas Sutrich / Android Central)

Ready to get rid of that boring old slab phone and jump on board with the foldable revolution? Best Buy is your foldable headquarters for Cyber Monday and it’s offering hundreds off both the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4. That makes the Flip 4 $799 out the door and the Fold 4 $1,399.

But why stop there? Take that old phone you’re currently using and trade it in at Best Buy. The company is offering bonus trade-in values for this Cyber Monday weekend — up to $900, in fact — which means you could get a Z Fold 4 for as low as $499 and a Z Flip 4 completely free depending on what you’re trading in.

At the very least, you could get an exciting new foldable phone for hundreds off with this deal and walk out of the store today instead of having to wait for shipping. Be sure to pick up a great Flip 4 case (opens in new tab) or Fold 4 case (opens in new tab) when you’re done, many of which are also available in Best Buy stores.

(Image credit: Nick Sutrich / Android Central)

If you’re an AT&T or Verizon customer and are looking for a great new phone, how about picking up our #1 pick for best Android phone (opens in new tab)? The Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus is the “Goldilocks” of Samsung’s latest flagship phones, bringing a big screen, a bigger battery, great performance, stellar cameras, and software updates for years.

This Cyber Monday deal is live right now and will give you a $500 Walmart gift card the second you complete the purchase, helping you get a brand-new phone and some much-needed cash to buy the rest of your Holiday and Christmas gifts this year. What’s better than that?

NASA’s Orion capsule circles the moon, capturing views that’ll make you feel giddy

A view captured by a camera on one of Orion’s solar array wings shows Earth setting beneath the moon’s horizon. A portion of the Orion capsule is in the foreground at left. (NASA Photo)

NASA’s Orion capsule rounded the moon today, marking a crucial milestone in a weeks-long Artemis 1 mission that’s preparing the way for sending astronauts to the lunar surface.

As the uncrewed spacecraft maneuvered for its outbound powered flyby, it sent back a spectacular set of images that showed the moon looming larger in its metaphorical windshield, and a tiny blue Earth setting beneath the lunar horizon.

Artemis 1 flight director Judd Frieling said flight controllers at NASA’s Johnson Space Center felt “giddy” when they saw the pictures come down.

“They’re just happy that all of the hard work and dedication that they’ve spent for years — many, many, many years — is really paying dividends,” he told reporters.

Mission manager Mike Sarafin said the flight was proceeding with “no concerns,” other than a few glitches with its power system and its star trackers.

The moon looms larger in a series of images sent back from the Orion capsule. The final image in this set shows Earth in the far background, more than 230,000 miles away. (NASA Photos)

Today’s 2.5-minute engine firing, which came five days after the Artemis 1 launch, sent Orion as close to the moon as 81 miles. At the time of closest approach, the spacecraft zoomed over the lunar surface at a speed of more than 5,000 mph. Orion was out of contact with Earth for about 34 minutes as it flew behind the moon.

Another maneuver, scheduled for Friday, will put the spacecraft into what’s known as a distant retrograde orbit, stretching 40,000 miles beyond the moon. Such an orbit would be the farthest-out from Earth that a spacecraft designed to carry humans has flown during its mission. (Some commentators noted that the Apollo 10 lunar ascent module, which was jettisoned in 1969 and is now orbiting the sun, is farther out.)

Orion was in the dark during today’s closest approach, so there was no opportunity to capture views of the Apollo landing sites as it flew over. But Sarafin promised that NASA will release more great pictures — once they’re downloaded from the spacecraft and cleared for distribution. NASA also set up a streaming-video channel to feature live imagery from Artemis 1 when it’s available.

The views could be even better when Orion makes another close lunar approach on Dec. 5, during the maneuver for its return to Earth. That trajectory should send the spacecraft over the Apollo sites in daylight.

This uncrewed Artemis 1 mission is meant to test the equipment and procedures that would be used in 2024 or so for the Artemis 2 mission, which would send a crew of astronauts around the moon. Artemis 2, in turn, would set the stage for a crewed lunar landing, currently scheduled for late 2025. That would be the first such landing since Apollo 17 in 1972.

An interior view of the Orion capsule shows a sensor-equipped mannequin that’s been nicknamed “Commander Moonikin Campos” sitting in the seat at left. A zero-G indicator, styled after the Snoopy character from the “Peanuts” comic strip, is floating to the mannequin’s lower right. The console for the experimental Alexa-like Callisto device is front and center.

Three mannequins are sitting inside the Artemis 1 capsule, wired up with sensors that are monitoring temperature, radiation exposure and other factors during flight.

The capsule also has an Alexa-style voice assistant, code-named Callisto, which was created by Amazon in collaboration with Lockheed Martin and Cisco. During future deep-space flights, something like Callisto could provide a channel for information and videoconferencing — as well as a HAL-like sort of companionship for crews who might be missing out on real-time contact with folks back on Earth.

“We’ve had a couple of live technology assessments of the Callisto payload, and it’s operating very well across the board,” said Howard Hu, who is the Orion program manager at Johnson Space Center. “We’re getting good visuals and good communications, thanks to Judd’s team allocating some bandwidth. Right now, based on those sessions, things are looking very well with that payload.”

Orion is scheduled to splash down in the Pacific Ocean on Dec. 11, bringing the Artemis 1 mission to a close.

Nintendo acquires animation studio that’ll become ‘Nintendo Pictures’

Nintendo has acquired CG production company Dynamo Pictures, and will rename it to “Nintendo Pictures,” the company has announced. The new subsidiary will “focus on development of visual content utilizing Nintendo IP” and the “planning and production of visual content including CG animation.” The company’s IMDB page lists credits on dozens of titles, including motion capture work on Death Stranding and Persona 5, and post-production work on Metroid: Other M.

The acquisition comes as Nintendo is gearing up for the most significant cinematic release in years; an animated movie based on the Super Mario Bros. franchise starring Chris Pratt. The film is currently scheduled to release in spring next year, almost thirty years after the last major cinematic adaptation: 1993’s live action Super Mario Bros. starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. A live action adaptation of Detective Pikachu based on the Pokémon franchise was released in 2019.

The acquisition comes amidst a flurry of interest in turning video games into movies and TV shows. A second animated film based on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise was released earlier this year, and a TV show based on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us is currently in production for HBO. Sony, which also recently put out a film based on its Uncharted games, indicated that it wants to continue expanding its PlayStation IP outside of video games at a recent investor day.

Nintendo’s notice to shareholders says it’s acquiring 100 percent of the outstanding shares of Dynamo Pictures, which will become a wholly owned subsidiary of the video game company. It expects the acquisition to close on October 3rd, 2022.

Nikolas Cruz sentencing: Jury selection starts today for panel that’ll help decide if Parkland school shooter gets the death penalty

Following Cruz’s guilty pleas, the 12-member jury now being impaneled for the penalty phase will be asked to decide whether to recommend his execution. Six to eight alternates also are due to be picked, the judge said last week during a hearing.

“There were 17 people killed, so there is a story of the death of 17 people,” Assistant State Attorney Jeff Marcus told the court in explaining why the penalty phase could last into the fall. “And then there are 17 more that are considered aggravating factors in the case.”

Jurors would have to agree unanimously that at least one aggravating factor — including the concurrent capital felony charges to which Cruz pleaded guilty, or whether he knowingly created the risk of other deaths — exists among the 34 charges to then begin to discuss whether he should face the death penalty.

If that happens, they must be unanimous in recommending a death sentence, otherwise his sentence would necessarily be life in prison. If they do recommend capital punishment, the final decision still rests with the judge.

Cruz confessed to police soon after the shooting, according to a probable cause affidavit, but then pleaded not guilty. His attorneys later said he’d change his pleas to guilty if prosecutors took the death penalty off the table, but they never did. All the same, he switched his position to guilty on all 34 counts, setting the stage for the penalty phase.

14 students and 3 faculty members were slain

On the afternoon of February 14, 2018, then-19-year-old Cruz, who had been expelled from Marjory Stoneman Douglas, took an Uber to his former high school, according to an outline of events that prosecutor Michael Satz recited October 20 during the hearing at which Cruz pleaded guilty. Cruz had with him a rifle bag with an AR-15-style rifle and backpack that held firearm magazines and a tactical vest, Satz said.

When he arrived, Cruz walked into the high school’s three-story 1200 building, stepped into the east stairwell and started loading the rifle. As he did so, a student walked into the stairwell, Satz said.

“You better get out of here,” Cruz told the student, per the prosecutor. “Something bad is about to happen.”

At about 2:21 p.m., Cruz opened fire in the hallway, Satz said, shooting at students and teachers in hallways and classrooms as he made his way through the building and up through each floor. At one point, dust shaken from ceiling tiles by the gunfire set off the building’s fire alarm, sending students and teachers out of the classrooms and into the hallways.

Of those killed, 14 were students: Alyssa Alhadeff, 14; Martin Duque Anguiano, 14; Nicholas Dworet, 17; Jaime Guttenberg, 14; Luke Hoyer, 15; Cara Loughran, 14; Gina Montalto, 14; Joaquin Oliver, 17; Alaina Petty, 14; Meadow Pollack, 18; Helena Ramsay, 17; Alex Schachter, 14; Carmen Schentrup, 16; and Peter Wang, 14.

Geography teacher Scott Beigel, 35; wrestling coach Chris Hixon, 49; and assistant football coach Aaron Feis, 37, were also killed — each while running toward danger or trying to help students to safety.

After the shooting, Cruz put down his weapon, the remaining magazines and his tactical vest and fled, blending in at 2:27 p.m. with other students, Satz said. He was arrested that afternoon, about 3 miles from the school.

At the October plea hearing, Cruz responded “guilty” to each of the 34 charges he faced before addressing the victims and their families in a short statement to the court.

“I am very sorry for what I did,” he said, in part, “and I have to live with it every day.”

Cruz’s apology, however, did little to comfort the parent of one slain student, who called it “ridiculous.”

“I think he deserves as much of a chance as he gave my daughter and everyone else on February 14 of 2018,” said Gina Montalto’s father, Tony Montalto, when asked about Cruz facing the death penalty.

Cruz has already been sentenced to 25 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to attacking a jail guard in November 2018.

Millions awarded to victims’ families in civil cases

The shooting’s impacts reached far beyond Parkland, a small Florida city about 50 miles north of Miami. In the weeks that followed, survivors and victims’ relatives spoke out and confronted lawmakers, demanding more action to address gun violence in American schools.
Students all over the US joined them, staging their own protests and school walkouts. That movement culminated just over a month after the massacre with March for Our Lives as hundreds of thousands of demonstrators attending hundreds of marches across the country called for gun control reform. “Never Again,” became the protesters’ rallying cry.
While the full effect of the movement is hard to quantify, one year after the massacre, at least 67 new laws aimed at gun safety were enacted in 26 states, the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence said at the time.

But school shootings have continued, with some 130 recorded at US campuses with K-12 students since Parkland, according to CNN’s tally.

Still, the activism inspired by the Parkland shooting has also persisted. Last month, on the fourth anniversary of the March For Our Lives in Washington, activists from the organization spelled out “Thoughts and Prayers” on the National Mall using more than 1,100 body bags, CNN affiliate WJLA reported. Each represented lives the organization said were lost in gun-related deaths since Parkland.
And civil cases brought by the families of Parkland victims have been resolved. The US Justice Department settled 40 civil cases stemming from the shooting for $127.5 million, it said in a statement last month, adding the settlement “does not amount to an admission of fault by the United States.” The FBI acknowledged after the shooting it failed to act on a tip about “the potential of (Cruz) conducting a school shooting,” among other concerns.
Broward County Public Schools, the district that includes Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, announced in December it would pay more than $26 million to 51 plaintiffs, including those who were injured and families of the 17 people killed.

“While we recognize that no amount of money can make these families whole, it is the school board’s hope that this settlement will show our heartfelt commitment to the MSD families, students, staff and faculty and the entire Broward County community,” the district’s interim general counsel said.

Meantime, Broward County Sheriff’s Deputy Scot Peterson, a school resource officer criticized for failing to confront Cruz during the shooting, has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the mass shooting, including counts of felony child neglect. A trial is set for September.

CNN’s Denise Royal contributed to this report.
