Adam Duvall Plans To Seek Advice From This Red Sox Teammate

Newly signed Boston Red Sox outfielder Adam Duvall doesn’t have much experience playing inside the confines of Fenway Park.

Duvall has played just four games at Boston’s home ballpark after spending all nine seasons of his career in the National League. The unfamiliarity will pose a challenge for Duvall when it comes to manning the outfield as he will presumably slot in to be the Red Sox’s everyday center fielder.

“The biggest challenge will be the dimensions,” Duvall told reporters Wednesday, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “I’ve even thought about watching certain plays and how I can learn to play the ball off the wall or the ball in the gap. … I’m thinking of ways I can try to familiarize myself with the park.”

One way Duvall plans on doing that is enlisting the help of current members of the Red Sox, particularly Kiké Hernández, to get him up to speed on his new outfield home.

Hernández, who helped recruit Duvall to Boston, should be a reliable source since he played the last two seasons in center with the Red Sox and can pass on advice to Duvall to aid him in his transition.

“Probably the first person that I go to for advice… it’s a very unique ballpark, it’s going to take some work to get used to…” Duvall told reporters, per the Boston Herald’s Gabrielle Starr. “I’m up for the challenge, I’m looking forward to it. Honestly, I can’t wait to get going.”

Duvall has the ability to play all three outfield positions but saw the majority of his time during an injury-shortened 2022 campaign with the Atlanta Braves come in center field.

Braves’ Michael Harris II beats out teammate Spencer Strider for NL ROY

The Atlanta Braves believed Michael Harris II had the ability to at least hold his own in the majors after impressing the front office and coaching staff in spring training in both 2021 and ’22.

At the minimum, they knew he was the best defensive center fielder in the organization, and with Braves center fielders hitting a collective .186 through May 27 and the team under .500, they decided to roll the dice.

The Braves called up the 21-year-old from Double-A even though he had played just 43 games above Class A. Harris rewarded the Braves’ belief with one of the best rookie seasons in franchise history, hitting .297/.339/.515 with 19 home runs and 20 stolen bases while playing outstanding defense.

“I feel like the whole season was unrealistic,” Harris said. “I was just going day to day and I guess living the dream. But now that the season’s over, I guess I can actually look back and think about how crazy of a year it was and how fast it went.”

Harris beat out teammate Spencer Strider to win National League Rookie of the Year honors on Monday, collecting 22 first-place votes and 134 points to Strider’s eight first-place votes and 103 points. St. Louis Cardinals utility player Brendan Donovan finished third in the voting.

Harris and Strider are just the fourth pair of teammates to finish 1-2 in the voting since ranked balloting began in 1980, joining the Braves’ Craig Kimbrel and Freddie Freeman in 2011, the Cubs’ Jerome Walton and Dwight Smith in 1989 and the Mariners’ Alvin Davis and Mark Langston in 1984.

Harris is the ninth player in Braves franchise history to win rookie of the year honors.

Harris was hitting .305 for Double-A Mississippi when the Braves called him up. Two days later, Strider made his first start after pitching out of the bullpen to begin the season. The Braves immediately took off, winning 15 in a row from June 1 through June 15, with Harris hitting .370 in that stretch. The Braves eventually rallied from 10.5 games behind the Mets in late May to win their fifth straight NL East title.

“He’s very calm, and he’s very consistent,” manager Brian Snitker said of Harris in early September. “It’s the whole thing. He can beat you a lot of different ways. With his glove, with his arm, with his legs, with his bat. That’s pretty good qualities to have in a player that can do so much to impact the game.”

Harris’ all-around tools — his Statcast measurements included a 92nd percentile ranking in outs above average on defense, a 95th percentile ranking in sprint speed and a 95th percentile in arm strength — helped him to a 5.3-WAR season, making him just the 34th rookie position player with 5.0 WAR since the divisional era began in 1969.

He did it in just 114 games, the fewest of any player on the list. The only Rookies of the Year since 2010 with a higher WAR were Mike Trout, Jose Abreu, Aaron Judge and Pete Alonso.

In mid-August, the Braves rewarded Harris with an eight-year contract extension worth $72 million that runs through 2030, with two club option seasons that could make it worth $102 million over 10 years. Not bad for a kid who grew up a Braves fan in Stockbridge, Georgia, 35 miles south of Truist Park.

“Yeah, I definitely never thought about the year 2030,” Harris said when he signed the deal. “That’s far. I’m just glad to be able to stay here in Atlanta that long.”

The Braves selected the hometown kid in the third round of the 2018 draft — when many teams viewed Harris as a pitcher. Braves scout Dana Brown, now the scouting director, saw an outfielder with power and speed. As Buster Olney wrote earlier this year, the Braves invited Harris to hit at Truist Park before the draft, and he filled the outfield seats with home runs in batting practice.

Harris told the Braves: “I am a hitter.”

Harris, however, hadn’t hit for much power in the minors, slugging seven home runs at Class A Rome in 2021 and just five in those 43 games at Double-A. Upon joining the Braves, hitting coach Kevin Seitzer had Harris make an adjustment, lowering his hands. Harris took to the change immediately and his power took off.

Harris spent his first three months hitting at the bottom of a strong Atlanta lineup, but was hitting third the final week of the season when the Braves swept the Mets in a crucial series to wrap up the division title.

“As he matures and he becomes this player we all know he is, he will probably be at that number 2 or 3 spot for a long time,” Snitker said near the end of the season.

Strider also had a remarkable season, going 11-5 with a 2.67 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 131.2 innings. Strider became just the 10th rookie since 1969 with 200 strikeouts and the first since Yu Darvish in 2012. His 13.81 strikeouts per nine innings was the second highest ever for a pitcher with at least 100 innings, behind only Gerrit Cole’s 13.82 in 2019.

“Everybody tries to pinpoint specific checkpoints that they’re trying to achieve,” Strider said when reaching that 200-strikeout milestone. “I don’t think I was trying to strike out 200 guys in a season. That wasn’t a goal of mine. It was just to win games, keep us in games, things that I can control and have control over.”

The voting may have been closer if Strider hasn’t missed the final two-plus weeks with an oblique strain. Strider also received his own financial reward when he signed a six-year, $75 million extension in early October that includes a $22 million club option for 2029.

Harris and Strider will also receive an extra bonus via the pre-arbitration bonus pool agreed to in the new labor deal: $750,000 for Harris and $500,000 for Strider.

Buffalo Bills CB Dane Jackson taken to hospital for evaluation of neck injury after collision with teammate

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills starting cornerback Dane Jackson is being evaluated for a neck injury at a local hospital following a scary collision with a teammate during the Monday night game against the Tennessee Titans.

Jackson has full movement in his extremities, according to the team, and was getting a CT scan and an X-ray at Erie County Medical Center.

The inadvertent collision occurred while Bills linebacker Tremaine Edmunds was making a second-down tackle on Titans wide receiver Treylon Burks with less than a minute remaining in the first half. Jackson’s head appeared to snap back after making contact with Edmunds’ helmet.

The game was delayed for nearly 10 minutes as team trainers attended to Jackson, who was moving his legs. He was then placed onto a stretcher and taken through the stadium tunnel in an ambulance.

Teammates surrounded Jackson as he was being tended to, with Edmunds remaining nearby almost the entire time.

Jackson, a third-year player who began the season starting in place of an injured Tre’Davious White, had three tackles Monday and last week recorded an interception in the Bills’ win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Following Jackson’s injury, rookies Christian Benford and Kaiir Elam took over in his place. They had been rotating opposite Jackson to start the season.

Jurickson Profar: Baseball player collapses after huge collision with teammate

Both Profar and C.J. Abrams had been sprinting to catch the ball, unaware of each other’s efforts in a game against the San Francisco Giants.

A split second after Abrams caught the ball, the pair collided at high-speed with Profar attempting a diving catch. Footage showed Abrams’ knee making significant contact with his teammate’s head.

Profar was in obvious discomfort as he lay on the ground but later attempted to walk off the field accompanied by members of his team. However, he collapsed as he got to the infield and was subsequently stretchered off by medics.

“Jurickson Profar has been transported to UC San Diego Health for further evaluation. We will provide additional updates when available,” the Padres said in a statement.

Profar left the stadium to applause and put his fist up to acknowledge the supporters while smiling.

“No tingling or anything in the arms,” manager Bob Melvin said after the game. “I think what we’re worried about most is a concussion at this point, but they’re checking everything out.”

“It’s just an awful feeling anytime you put somebody on a stretcher like that.

“Just looking at him, the way he is — trying to make everybody feel OK about it with a smile on his face — makes you feel a little bit better.”

After the game, Abrams said he didn’t hear Profar coming and was completely unaware of his teammate until they made contact.

“I was just trying to go catch it,” Abrams said. “I didn’t hear anything; the crowd was loud. Next thing you know, we just ran into each other … Hopefully, he’s OK.”

Tennessee Titans’ Ryan Tannehill vows he’ll be ‘great teammate’ to Malik Willis, feels mentor comments blown out of proportion

Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill feels his comments about it not being his job to mentor 2022 third-round NFL draft pick Malik Willis have been blown out of proportion.

“I meant no disrespect to Malik or anything like that,” Tannehill said on Tuesday. “We’ve been in constant communication since he was drafted. I’m disappointed in how things got spun and twisted a little bit. I pride myself on being a great teammate my whole career going back to when I was a kid playing youth sports.”

When asked about mentoring Willis earlier this month, Tannehill said he understood the dynamics of a competitive quarterback room, but it isn’t his job to mentor the rookie quarterback. Titans coach Mike Vrabel added that Tannehill’s “job is to make sure the team is prepared to win games.”

Tannehill said Tuesday he reached out to Willis as soon as his comments made headlines. Tannehill made it clear that he and Willis will compete, but he emphasized that he is willing to help Willis and be a great teammate. He also said that as a leader on the team, it’s his charge to help the rookie out.

“As soon as it blew up, I reached out to him and said, ‘Hey, I’m going to be a great teammate to you, I’m going to support you. They’re making this out to something that it’s not to be. It’s not what it’s been made out to be at all,'” he said. “He’s been good. He was great with it throughout the whole time. It’s been great to have him in the room and build that relationship.”

Tannehill said he takes the word mentor “seriously,” which might be why his earlier comments were misunderstood.

“There’s a few people that I count as mentors. There’s hundreds of people that helped me out throughout my career, but there’s only a few people that I would consider mentors,” he said. “A mentorship is something that both people have to want, both people have to agree to enter into that, and it’s going to have to take a lot of time, energy and focus.”

Tennessee began to entertain the idea of selecting a quarterback of the future heading into the draft this year. The Titans were the No. 1 seed in the AFC but lost to the Cincinnati Bengals at home in the divisional round of the playoffs last season. Tannehill’s three interceptions played a part in the loss.

The Titans took the field as a team for the first time on Monday. So far, the relationship between Tannehill and Willis appears to be headed in the right direction.

“It’s been cool,” Willis said. “He’s a great guy that works super hard and wants everybody to get their work. He’s definitely someone that you can look up to.”

JJ Redick: Zion Williamson a detached teammate

. @jj_redick is concerned with how “detached” Zion Williamson has been from the team. “This is a pattern of behavior that we are seeing again and again with Zion.”

In hindsight, we probably should have made a bigger deal out of Coach K saying Zion wasn’t in the “playing shape or the mental shape to play” to even play at Summer League. forbes.com/sites/adamzago… – 12:52 PM

Oleh Kosel @OlehKosel
Admit it, you’re not the least bit surprised by JJ Redick’s words today.
However, either Williamson’s behavior gets rectified asap (Zion/his camp get with program) or toxicity gets removed from New Orleans.
Should be zero tolerance on a team whose culture is finally blossoming. – 12:23 PM

Scott Kushner @ScottDKushner
The Pelicans should not be let off the hook.
David Griffin did not optimize the relationship. Hiring Stan Van Gundy was a catastrophically bad mistake that poisoned the Pelicans’ culture last year.
But, Zion is absolutely at fault here as well.
It’s a bad situation. – 12:03 PM

Scott Kushner @ScottDKushner
JJ Redick is a Duke guy, a CAA guy and someone with a personal grudge against David Griffin.
For him to light Zion up as a bad teammate and not invested in the franchise or his career, is the most damning condemnation I can think of, short of a current teammate doing it. – 11:51 AM

Jake Madison @NOLAJake
Zion could quiet this all down by doing easy little things. He might be faking it/lying when he does that. But it quiets everything.
But sometimes silence is an answer – 11:48 AM

Scott Kushner @ScottDKushner
It’s stupefying, considering all of the noise and conjecture floating around about Zion, that he’s continuing on the path of complete silence.
Even a coordinated leak from his camp would counteract a lot of this.
Instead, there’s just nothing. A void. – 6:26 PM

Going from the face of the Pelicans franchise to not even being listed on the latest season ticket brochure, that’s some downward spiral for Zion Williamson.
Biggest shame is it feels like a lot of negativity could have been avoided by matters simply being handled differently. pic.twitter.com/oFicIRLoK9 – 4:13 PM

Jake Madison @NOLAJake
Given the way things have gone, a lot of it out of their hands, it’s probably the right move to not mention Zion in that ticket renewal opening paragraph. If the Pels did the backlash would be just as bad. – 3:34 PM

I get it from the Pelicans perspective.
They’ve pushed Zion as the marquee attraction for 3 years and he’s played in 14 home games that weren’t seriously limited by COVID restrictions.

Many basketball fans would be surprised that 33-year-old Durant, who now plays for the Brooklyn Nets, was in attendance at the gathering after leaving Curry and the rest of the championship-winning team in June 2019.

Steph – born Wardell Stephen Curry II –  seemed in good spirits as he left the celebration in the wee hours of the night in a black Under Armour hoodie from his signature line and a baseball cap.

Dynamic duo: Durant and Curry – who are currently the top candidates for the NBA MVP – were teammates for three seasons as they won the NBA Championship in 2017 and 2018 together, they are seen in Los Angeles back in April 2019

The two stars – who are currently the top candidates for the NBA MVP – were teammates for three seasons as they won the NBA Championship in 2017 and 2018 together.

The Golden State Warriors lost to the Toronto Raptors in the NBA Finals in June 2019 after Durant tore his Achilles tendon and signed with the Brooklyn Nets in free agency weeks later.

The 2018-19 season was a bit tumultuous as Durant famously got into a heated argument with teammate Draymond Green in November 2018 which was thought by many to have been the reason why the star ultimately left but during a podcast in August the two players blamed coach Steve Kerr and president/general manager Bob Myers for the way things were handled.

Still got it: Also seen at the celebration was Steph’s dad Dell Curry who carried along the game ball from Madison Square Garden

They now have three kids and reside in Atherton, California, not far from where Curry plays with the Warriors at San Francisco’s Chase Center.

Back in September they renewed their vows after a decade of marriage as their eldest daughter Riley, nine, officiated the ceremony.
