Smash Bros Pro Hurt Jumping From Illegal Taxi On Way To Tourney

Just trying to get away from the fakes.
Image: Nintendo

A big fighting game tournament, Genesis 9, took place from January 20-23 in San Jose, California. Top talent from around the world, including Super Smash Bros. competitors Leonardo “MkLeo” Lopez and Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby, gathered at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center to play games like Guilty Gear Strive and Rivals of Aether. But for one Super Smash Bros. Melee pro, British player Elliot “Frenzy” Grossman, the Genesis 9 tournament started with an illegal taxi and, he claims, a near kidnapping.

“Got tricked into an illegal taxi coming out of [the San Francisco International Airport] and nearly got kidnapped,” Frenzy tweeted on January 19 with a picture of his scarred-up right hand. “Jumped out of the car after seeing the police chase after the vehicle and very luckily only bruised and scraped my hand and back. In the hospital [right now], [but I have] no idea how anything works here [to be honest].”

You might be wondering what the hell Frenzy’s talking about, as it sounds like some action movie stunt with Tom Cruise or something. Well, as it turns out, the Falco main, who was making his way to the Genesis 9 tourney, encountered some…complications when he touched down in California.

“So, I had just got off an 11-hour flight from London Heathrow Airport to San Francisco International Airport,” Frenzy told Kotaku in an email. “I was planning to get an Uber to my hotel in San Jose, but my phone had run out of battery on the way and wifi was often spotty at the airports. I decided to get a taxi instead and so, I walked out to the taxi stand.”

Frenzy is a pro Melee player for the British esports organization Reason Gaming. Hailing from England and maining Falco, he is the UK’s second-best player and the 47th-best Melee competitor in the world as of 2022. His record speaks for itself, though. He regularly places in the top 10 bracket at most tournaments he participates in and has a few first-place wins under his belt as well, with his last one being at the Galint Melee Open: Fall Edition 2022 back in November. The dude can game! However, he wasn’t prepared for the game of California transportation.

Beyond the Summit

“A driver approaches me and asked if I was looking for a taxi, to which I replied yes and then asked where I was going as per usual,” Frenzy said. “He shows me to the car and opens the door for me to get in with my things and as I close the door and belt up, I look out of the window and see multiple police officers with weapons drawn running towards the vehicle and shouting ‘Stop the vehicle!’ and ‘Get out!’ The driver ignores this and then accelerated immediately as I was still getting in and belting up, at which point I knew that I had made a massive mistake. In the moment I just decided that if I got out quick enough, it was safer than either the driver getting away and being at his mercy or getting involved in a police chase which could end in a crash at higher speeds.”

“When I turned around to put my seatbelt on, I saw multiple cops running out to surround the car out of the window,” Frenzy said. “They had guns drawn. The driver then accelerated, foot to the floor, and tried to get away. That was when I decided to bail out. I was familiar with this sort of thing happening from the internet, but I was caught completely off guard by this specific attempt, so I knew exactly what was going on.”

Frenzy said he was in “such an adrenaline rush” that things went blurry. One minute, he was buckling his seatbelt to head to Genesis 9. The next, he was “rolling on the ground” after jumping out of the fake taxi cab. He said he “didn’t land badly or have anything else on the road” near him to cause further injury as he rolled onto the asphalt, the car going around 15-20mph. Still, he was in “pretty serious pain,” with a backpack only somewhat cushioning his tumble and his right hand taking most of the impact. The Mills-Peninsula Emergency Department in Burlingame said Frenzy didn’t break anything but had “really bad swelling, abrasions, and bruising” on his right hand as well as “friction burns” on his back from rolling on gravel and “low blood pressure” for a while. He also got in touch with cops after the incident for a quick police report.

“The cops asked a lot about what the criminal’s exact actions were and they explained they had been after this guy that had been running this scheme for a while,” Frenzy said. “They gave me some information about the case number and who to contact. I’m not 100% sure how they caught the vehicle or the criminal as I was recovering from the jump, but I saw he was in handcuffs far away as I was being attended to later on.”

A San Francisco Police Department officer told Kotaku over the phone that, although they couldn’t divulge any specific information about the incident, Frenzy’s case is real and an “ongoing investigation” is currently in progress. The officer also told Kotaku that the individual conducting the investigation will give us a callback, but that hasn’t happened yet.

“These sorts of schemes are all over the world and, as a pretty experienced traveller, I’m usually aware of them,” Frenzy said. “However, in a lapse of judgement and after a long flight, I got tricked. They try to trick you by positioning close to where the legitimate taxi stands are and even color their cars in the same layout as legit ones. They will approach people, especially those who are on their own or who are tourists, and ask if they are looking for a taxi and where they are going. Because of this, I usually tend to stick to ride share apps when traveling, but on this occasion my phone was out of battery so I was in a rough situation.”

In the end, Frenzy made it to Genesis 9 to play some Super Smash Bros. Melee thanks to the help of the tournament’s organizers. After taking a day or two to heal up, he said he felt good enough to compete. He didn’t place that well, getting 49th in the tournament. However, he said the “event itself was amazing even despite what happened” and is “eager to return in full form next year.” Here’s hoping he gets there much safer next time.

Lyft to Lay Off About 700 Employees in Second Round of Job Cuts

Lyft Inc.

LYFT -0.61%

said it is cutting 13% of staff, or nearly 700 jobs, the latest technology company to say it needed to reduce costs ahead of choppy economic conditions.

Confirming an earlier report by The Wall Street Journal, Lyft co-founders

John Zimmer

and

Logan Green

announced the cuts to staff Thursday. “There are several challenges playing out across the economy. We’re facing a probable recession sometime in the next year and ride-share insurance costs are going up,” they wrote in the memo viewed by the Journal.

“We worked hard to bring down costs this summer: we slowed, then froze hiring; cut spending; and paused less-critical initiatives. Still, Lyft has to become leaner, which requires us to part with incredible team members,” they added.

The ride-hailing company has more than 5,000 employees, which don’t include its drivers. Lyft laid off 60 people, or under 2% of its workforce, in July. In May, it said it planned to slow hiring and reduce the budgets of some of its departments.

Technology companies large and small have been announcing hiring freezes or staffing cuts this year after many hired at a breakneck speed through the pandemic and now confront a tougher economic outlook. This week,

Amazon.com Inc.

told employees it is pausing corporate hiring and payments startup Stripe Inc. said Thursday that it is laying off about 14% of its employees. Both blamed the harsh economic climate for their decisions.

San Francisco-based Lyft also said that it would sell its vehicle service centers and that most of that team is expected to receive roles from the acquiring company, which it didn’t name. Lyft has centers in nine markets.

The company maintained its third quarter and 2024 earnings outlook but said it expects to incur $27 million to $32 million in restructuring related to Thursday’s layoffs in this year’s fourth quarter. The company posts third-quarter results Monday.

Lyft shares have underperformed the broader market over the past 12 months. Through Wednesday’s close, its stock was down 71% from a year ago while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index was down 33%.

Rival

Uber Technologies Inc.’s

diversified business, which includes global rides operations and a food-delivery arm that became its lifeline during the pandemic, has fared better with Wall Street. Its stock is down about 37% in the past year.

In May, Uber said it would slow hiring. Both companies have struggled with a driver shortage over the past year, an imbalance that has pushed ride fares to record highs. Uber said active drivers and riders returned to prepandemic levels for the first time in this year’s third quarter.

Taxi Fountas accused of using racial slur during D.C. United loss

On a night that D.C. United conceded a stoppage-time winner in a 3-2 loss to Inter Miami at Audi Field, its late collapse was overshadowed by something much uglier.

After a second-half exchange Sunday between United attacker Taxi Fountas and Miami defender Damion Lowe resulted in a lengthy delay and both players receiving yellow cards, with Fountas promptly being substituted, Miami Coach Phil Neville said the clash was over the use of a racial slur.

“A word was used that I think is unacceptable in society,” Neville said. “A word was used that I think is the worst word in the world.”

Miami defender DeAndre Yedlin said Lowe was walking away after a tussle with Fountas when “the guy called him the n-word” and teammate Aimé Mabika reacted angrily. Lowe and Mabika are Black. Yedlin said Miami decided to “not continue until something was done with that player.”

Fountas, who had scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season moments before, was not made available for comment amid an investigation by the club, MLS and the Professional Referee Organization, a club spokesman said. Referee Ismail Elfath told a pool reporter that no official had heard racist or abusive language and that none was detected via video review.

“The referee came over and spoke to me and Phil and there was a complaint, which I’m sure will get investigated,” United Coach Wayne Rooney said. “So there’s nothing really much more I can say.”

In a statement, United said: “D.C. United are aware of the allegations involving a player during the match against Inter Miami CF. The club will work closely with Major League Soccer and Inter Miami to investigate the incident.”

“MLS has zero tolerance for abusive and offensive language and we take these allegations very seriously,” the league said in a statement. “An investigation into this matter will begin promptly.”

Spirit beats Gotham FC, has postseason hopes dashed a short while later

Six weeks after United made Christian Benteke the most expensive player in club history, Rooney finally had an opportunity to deploy his prize summer signing alongside Fountas, the club’s lone all-star who had missed Benteke’s first four matches with a concussion.

Sure enough, Benteke and Fountas found the net Sunday. But Miami got a pair of goals from Leonardo Campana and, after Fountas exited, a stoppage-time winner from Gonzalo Higuaín.

For a last-place D.C. team (7-19-6) that had failed to score in eight of its past 10 matches, the burst of offense was welcome. Fountas’s comeback, however, was soured by the allegation, as was the crucial win for a Miami team in the midst of a playoff push.

“It makes a really nice moment for us kind of dark,” said Yedlin, a member of the Black Players for Change group in MLS. “This is something I’ve been outspoken about my whole career, so it’s really unfortunate to see it live.”

Benteke opened his D.C. scoring account in the 22nd minute. United midfielder Chris Durkin curled a one-time service into the box that the Belgian striker stabbed home at the far post.

Miami (12-13-6) drew level in the 39th on Campana’s scrappy finish during a goalmouth scramble, then took the lead in the 53rd as the Ecuadoran striker again finished from close range.

Fountas pulled United level four minutes later. Miami cleared a D.C. free kick to the top of the box, where the Greek forward launched a one-time volley that took a healthy deflection on the way in.

But the subsequent delay, in which Elfath stopped to convene with Rooney and Neville multiple times, and Fountas’s 66th-minute substitution halted any momentum from United’s equalizer.

“We were trying to put pressure,” Benteke said. “With that break, it just slowed down the game.”

Both teams pushed for a winner before Miami broke through on a counterattack in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Indiana Vassilev touched a pass wide to Yedlin, whose low cross was steered in by Higuaín.

“It doesn’t even feel like a win,” Yedlin said. “Now we’ll see what the MLS does about [the accusation]. My eyes will be on that a lot. It’s now up to them to take action and take a stand and show that this not only has no place in the game but no place in society.”

Here’s what else to know about D.C. United’s defeat:

FIFA keeps Ecuador in the World Cup field, dismissing claim from rivals

Ex-England teammates meet

The match was the first meeting between Rooney and Neville since Rooney took over as United’s coach in July. They were teammates at Manchester United in 2004-05 and with England’s national team from 2003 to 2007.

Neville praised Rooney for his decision to remove Fountas from the game.

“I must give massive, massive respect to Wayne Rooney for dealing with it in the way that he did,” Neville said. “I’ve always known him as a class act. I think today he went up in my estimation more than he’s ever done, more than any goal he’s ever scored.”

International break looms

United is off next weekend as most of MLS goes on hiatus for the final international window before the World Cup in Qatar as national teams fine-tune their tactics and get a final look at players before submitting their rosters. D.C. visits CF Montreal on Oct. 1 before hosting FC Cincinnati on Oct. 9 to close the season.

20-year-old charged with manslaughter in taxi driver’s beating death in Queens

EDGEMERE, Queens (WABC) — A 20-year-old man has surrendered to police and is now charged with manslaughter in the beating death of a New York City taxi driver.

Austin Amos walked into the 101st Precinct stationhouse in Far Rockaway, Queens, Wednesday night, accompanied by his mother, after investigators released video of the suspects wanted in the death of 52-year-old Kutin Gyimah.

Police say Gyimah hit his head on the ground during an altercation with fare-evading passengers Saturday.

Amos has six prior arrests, including robbery, criminal mischief, criminal contempt and sexual misconduct.

A second male, also 20, also arrived at the precinct Wednesday night. He is still being questioned.

Two girls — ages 13 and 15 — are still being sought for their alleged roles in the attack.

A 16-year-old girl initially identified by detectives is no longer being sought.

Detectives believe Amos landed the final blow on the taxi driver, sending him to the pavement and potentially causing his death.

Surveillance video shows the moment Gyimah was punched and fell on his head. His wife, Abigail Gyiham, said she was relieved at the news of the arrest.

“He was my children’s hero,” she said. “He was my backbone. He was the one I looked up to. I look up to God, but aside God, he was the only one I looked up to. And now, his life has just been cut short just like that.”

The couple has four children ages 3, 5, 7 and 8.

“He was my backbone,” she said over the weekend. “I’m lost right now. My children here. I don’t know what to do right now. I am lost. I am lost in this world.”

Gyiham’s coworkers described him as a man who worked restlessly, especially during the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This gentleman drove his cab, he never stopped taking passengers,” fellow driver Spyros Drakos said. “This, to me, is a hero, like the first responders. If a doctor, a nurse, someone, a family member needed to get somewhere, he was driving the cab, and he never stopped.”

According to police, when Kutin Gyimah let five passengers out near Beach 54th Street and Arverne Boulevard in Edgemere just before 6:30 a.m. instead of paying the fare, they tried to rob him.

Police said Gyimah chased after them and was attacked.

He suffered a severe head injury and was taken to St. John’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“Her husband went to work…like he did every day at 5 a.m., and he’s never coming back,” said Fernando Mateo, of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers said. “This guy picked them up to take them where they wanted to go. Why kill the man?”

The federation is also raising money to help the Gyiham family pay for the funeral with a GoFundMe page.

Taxi Jumps Curb, Critically Injuring 3 People in Manhattan

Three people were in critical condition on Monday afternoon after a taxi jumped the sidewalk in Manhattan’s Flatiron district. The driver hit a cyclist and several pedestrians with his vehicle, the authorities said.

Around 1 p.m., according to the Fire Department, the taxi crashed into a building near 29th Street and Broadway, an area packed with bars, restaurants and hotels. Police officials were investigating the cause of the collision, which they believe for now to be an accident.

As the driver turned left onto Broadway, the police said, his cab hit a cyclist and veered onto the sidewalk. The vehicle then accelerated and pushed two women against a wall.

Mamadou Barry, 40, was among the pedestrians who watched the collision unfold. He said that the cyclist remained conscious, but with his arm twisted in an unnatural way.

Mr. Barry joined more than a dozen other bystanders to move the cab away to free a victim who had been crushed. As pedestrians screamed, Mr. Barry looked away, not wanting to see the extent of the injuries. “It was scary,” he said.

Deputy Chief John Chell of the Police Department said at a news conference that “a remarkable scene took place: About 15 to 20 New Yorkers attempted to pick this cab off these women.”

Mohammad Khan, the owner of a perfume shop in the neighborhood, said he hurried to the site of the crash after hearing a commotion from his store, arriving to find the victims with gory injuries. Bystanders were offering them water and comforting them as they waited for ambulances to arrive, he said.

The Police Department was investigating whether the accident was caused by the driver having experienced a “medical episode,” a spokesman said earlier on Monday.

At least six people were injured and taken to the hospital, including the taxi driver, according to the authorities. Three had life-threatening injuries.

The cab was still on the scene about 3 p.m., near a juice store and a dessert shop. The driver’s door was open, next to a bicycle in the green bike lane.

The crash comes amid a startling rise in traffic deaths during the pandemic in the city and across the country.

In New York City, crashes killed 59 people during the first three months of this year, according to data from Transportation Alternatives, a bicycle and pedestrian advocacy group. It has been the deadliest start to the year since 2014, when then-Mayor Bill de Blasio announced his Vision Zero traffic safety program that aimed to eliminate traffic deaths by 2024.

Car ownership in the city also jumped during the pandemic, as more people avoided public transit. A recent weekend in June had about 60 percent of the subway ridership of a comparable weekend prepandemic, according to data from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Mayor Eric Adams recently announced a $904 million investment in safer streets over the next five years, money that would help for amenities like more protected bike lanes and pedestrian-only spaces. He has also said police officials will increase enforcement of traffic laws.
