Chinese warplanes enter Taiwan airspace days after Biden takes office

China ratcheted up activity in Taiwan airspace on Sunday by flying 15 fighter jets between mainland Taiwan and the Pratas Islands in the South China Sea, a report said.

Reuters, which cited Taiwan’s Defense Ministry, reported that the jets included six J-10 fighters, two SU-30s and other military planes. A day earlier, China flew eight bombers and four fighters into the same airspace, the report said.

The show of force was seen by some observers as a remarkable step by Beijing during the first week of President Biden’s term in office. Nikkei Asia reported that it is not uncommon for China to send aircraft into the region, but it is rare for the country to send more than 10 at once, and for two consecutive days.

Ned Price, a spokesman from the U.S. State Department, said Washington “notes with  concern the pattern of ongoing PRC [People’s Republic of China] attempts to intimidate its neighbors, including Taiwan.”

“We urge Beijing to cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressure against Taiwan and instead engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan’s democratically elected representatives,” he said in the statement.

The Reuters report said that Taiwan’s air force responded to the incursion. Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state. Beijing’s move was aimed at pressuring the government of President Tsai Ing-wen into caving to its demand that she recognize Taiwan as a part of Chinese territory.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier team entered the South China Sea on Sunday to exercise “freedom of the seas,” and the Biden administration has said its commitment to Taiwan is “rock-solid,” the Reuters report said.

Antony Blinken, Biden’s choice to be secretary of state, pledged to repair damage done to the State Department and America’s image abroad over the past four years while continuing a tougher approach to China.

Hsiao Bi-him, Taiwan’s de-facto ambassador to the U.S., was also invited to Biden’s inauguration, which the BBC reported is a sign of the new White House’s commitment.

China imposed sanctions Wednesday on more than two dozen former Trump administration officials, including outgoing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, just as Biden was sworn into office.

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., argued on Sunday that sanctions against former Trump administration officials are a “dangerous” and “insidious escalation of China’s effort to influence American policy.”

Video: Microsoft takes shots at Apple’s MacBook Pro in new ad for Surface Pro 7

Microsoft is ramping up its marketing efforts against Apple’s Mac lineup. As first spotted by MS Power User, the company has published a new ad for its Surface Pro 7 on YouTube, touting that it’s the “better choice” when compared to Apple’s MacBook Pro.

The video compares the Surface Pro 7 directly against the MacBook Pro, offering hands on time with both devices. Notably, Microsoft says that this is the $1299 MacBook Pro, but you can clearly tell that it does not feature a physical Esc key. This means the model shown in the video is not the newest MacBook Pro, and it’s powered by Intel rather than Apple Silicon inside.

The video highlights that the Surface Pro 7 features a full touch screen, where as the MacBook Pro only features a “little bar” with touch support, in reference to the Touch Bar. It also showcases that the Surface Pro 7 has a detachable keyboard, while you’re just “stuck with what you’ve got” with a MacBook Pro.

The description for the video touts that the Surface Pro 7 offers the versatility of “both a tablet and a laptop.”

Only Surface Pro 7 has the versatility and portability of both a tablet and a laptop. With features like touchscreen, detachable keyboard and pen, and enough power to run your favorite apps — you can work or play from anywhere. Microsoft Surface Pro 7 has everything you need to do what you love.

Finally, video says the Surface Pro 7 is a “much better gaming device” than the MacBook Pro and is more affordable. The Surface Pro 7 features a 12.3-inch display and starts at $750. The base configuration offers 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. The price increases to $2,299.99 if you want 1TB of storage and 16GB of RAM.

On the flip side, the MacBook Pro starts at $1299 for Apple’s M1 processor, 8GB of unified memory, and 256GB of storage. For $2,299, you can get 2TB of SSD storage and 16GB of unified memory.

Dolphins’ offensive coordinator search takes surprising turn

The Miami Dolphins’ offensive coordinator search has been, well, extensive. Miami got word near the end of the week immediately following their season-ending loss to the Buffalo Bills that veteran offensive coordinator Chan Gailey would be stepping down from his post, leaving the Dolphins in position to hire their third consecutive play caller in as many seasons in the Brian Flores era.

And, about a week ago, the Dolphins’ list of rumored candidates was reported. Included were:

Dolphins RB coach Eric Studesville
Dolphins QB coach George Godsey
Clemson OC Tony Elliott
Chargers QB coach Pep Hamilton
49ers run game coordinator Mike McDaniel
Steelers QB coach Matt Canada

But as last weekend unfolded, it seemed as though Miami’s shortlist of candidates was whittling away. First it was reported that Elliott desired to stay at Clemson. Then it was reported that Kyle Shanahan, amid departures from his staff in San Francisco, would promote McDaniel to serve as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator and that Matt Canada was in line to be promoted from the Steelers’ quarterbacks coach role to take the offensive coordinator role in Pittsburgh.

Presumably, there were three remaining candidates: Godsey and Studesville from within the Dolphins’ building and Hamilton. And we haven’t gotten any traction towards a resolution since. But the news from yesterday threw the whole situation for a loop. The Pittsburgh Steelers interviewed Hue Jackson for the position Canada was rumored and penciled in to take as the team’s offensive coordinator. So now Canada may be back on the table for the Dolphins after all.

Also reported to be in the running for Pittsburgh’s suddenly available vacancy? Pep Hamilton, who is reportedly interviewing in Pittsburgh today.

If Pittsburgh settles on Hamilton, the Dolphins will have no one to blame but themselves — they’ve been the only team reported to show significant interest for over a week but never made the hire, so one would assume Miami’s preference lies elsewhere, either with an internal candidate or perhaps with Canada after all.

We’d say that this vacancy will come to a resolution soon — but we thought that last week as well with the 2021 Senior Bowl looming for this coaching staff; so who knows when the hire is made. Before next season would be a safe bet.
