Woman shot in head during Takeoff killing compares incident to ‘scary movie’

  • The woman shot in the head during the same shooting in which Takeoff was killed has broken her silence.
  • “It was like a scary movie,” said Sydney Leday, 24.
  • Leday was left in a coma and in hospital for a week as a result of her injuries.

A woman who was shot in the head during the same shooting in which rapper Takeoff was killed has said it is a “miracle” she is still alive.

Takeoff, full name Kirshnik Khari Ball, was shot and killed outside a bowling alley in Houston, Texas, in the early hours of November 1. He was 28 years old.

Police said the shooting stemmed from an argument over a “lucrative dice game” in which the rapper was not involved and that he was an “innocent bystander.”

Sydney Leday, another bystander, was also shot as she fled the scene. The 24-year-old was left in a coma for a week due to her injuries.

A tearful Leday broke her silence about the incident.

“Like any other 24-year-old, I was just out partying and celebrating,” she told Houston news outlet KHOU 11 last week. “I felt the sting in the back of my head. I felt myself falling.”

Leday said after hitting the floor, she was picked up by the person she was with and driven straight to the hospital.

“It was like a scary movie, really,” she continued. “Ironically, it was Halloween night. I had on a nun outfit. I had blood all over me.

“I was just grateful that I did [survive] because of the place that it hit in my head. I just feel like it was a miracle.”

In December, Patrick Xavier Clark, 33, was charged with murder in connection to Takeoff’s death, while Cameron Joshua, 22, was charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon. As of now, there have been no charges filed directly in connection with Leday’s shooting.

Clark has since been released on a $1 million bond but is due to appear in court again in March.

Takeoff death: Suspect charged in the death of rapper has been released from jail after paying bond

CNN
 —

The suspect charged with murder in the death of Migos member Takeoff posted the $1 million bond set for him and was released from jail Tuesday, according to CNN affiliate KPRC.

In December, Harris County Judge Josh Hill kept Patrick Xavier Clark’s bond at $1 million, denying a reduction, reasoning that Clark may be a flight risk.

“Neither Patrick nor his family posted the bond in this case. A concerned citizen and family friend who believes in Patrick’s innocence posted the bond on his behalf,” his attorney Letitia Quinones said in a statement.

Clark “intends to comply fully” with the terms laid out by the court, Quinones said, and “will appear for proceedings whenever the court requires him to do so.”

“We believe Patrick is innocent and at the appropriate time, the evidence will reveal that to be the case,” Quinones said.

Clark, 33, was arrested early December on the east side of Houston, one month after Takeoff was shot and killed outside a business after a private event.

Takeoff, who was a member of the platinum-selling rap group Migos, was 28. His uncle Quavo and cousin Offset were the other two members of the trio.

Police believe Takeoff was an innocent bystander to an argument that took place outside a bowling alley that led to the shooting. He was unarmed and not involved in the argument.

After Judge Hill denied Clark’s bond reduction request in December, Quinones argued that the $1 million bond was unconstitutional due to Clark and his family’s financial situation being “average.”

Prosecutors in Harris County had argued Clark should be considered a “flight risk.”

Shortly after the killing, Clark allegedly applied for an expedited passport, which he received immediately before his arrest, according to the motion filed by prosecutors. When Clark was arrested, he had a “large amount of cash money,” the court document added.

Prosecutors also made several other requests, including that Clark surrender “any and all passports, visas, or other travel documents,” be barred from leaving the immediate vicinity of Harris County and be subject to a curfew.

Quinones said in a news conference at the time that her office was “surprised” by the decision.

“We complied with every requirement that the judge asked of us, only to be told today that it [the bond] would not be lowered. So yes, we are very disappointed. We disagree. And frankly, we’re very surprised,” Quinones said.

“The fight is not over. We do believe without a shadow of a doubt that when the time comes, we will be able to show Mr. Clark’s innocence in this,” Quinones said.

Man accused of murdering Migos member Takeoff asks for $2M bail to be reduced to $100K

Man accused of murdering Migos member Takeoff asks for $2M bail to be reduced to $100K and says he will live with his parents

  • Suspect Patrick Xavier Clark, 33, said he would follow all curfews and related rules ordered by the court and wear a GPS
  • Clark was arrested December 1 and charged in the murder of the rapper
  • Takeoff was fatally shot at 28 outside of a Houston bowling alley November 1

The suspect in the murder of Migos rapper Takeoff on Monday asked a Texas court to reduce his bail from $2 million to $100,000.

Patrick Xavier Clark, 33, told the court via his lawyer Carl Moore that he cannot afford the $2 million bail, TMZ reported after reviewing documents in the case, and believes that he can raise $100,000 in an effort with a bail bondsman.

Clark told the court that he would live with his parents, follow all curfews and related rules ordered by the court, wear a GPS monitor and abide by any ‘no-contact’ orders, according to the outlet.

He also said he would surrender his passport in connection with the case, which is centered around the fatal shooting of the rapper at the age of 28 outside of a Houston bowling alley November 1.

The outlet previously reported that Clark – who was requested a the court grant him a sum of $5,000 so he can hire a private investigator to assist with his legal defense.

Clark – who was arrested December 1 and charged in the murder of the rapper – told the court that his family has emptied their savings in hiring a lawyer to handle the case, and that he needs a private investigator who can ‘properly investigate [Clark’s] case and to prepare effectively for trial.’

According to authorities in the wake of Clark’s arrest, if the murder suspect made his bail, he would be put on house arrest; barred from owning any firearms or deadly weapons; not allowed to use marijuana or any controlled substance without a prescription; and prohibited from contacting people including Takeoff’s survivors and boxer Shakur Stevenson, who was present at the time of the deadly shooting.

Takeoff was snapped in Atlanta this past April at a birthday party for bandmate Quavo

A celebration of life ceremony was held in Atlanta at the State Farm Arena last month to honor the late musical artist

NBC News reported that the court granted the request, ordering authorities with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office to speak with the custody in suspect and bring a laptop, printer and device to record audio with.

Takeoff, whose real name is Kirshnik Khari Ball, died as result of ‘gunshot wounds of head and torso into arm’ in the wake of a private party held at 810 Billiards & Bowling, officials said. Gunshots were fired near the entrance of the establishment in the wake of a row after a dice game.

Houston Police Department Sgt. Michael Burrow said that Takeoff wasn’t involved in the game or the confrontation and ‘an innocent bystander’ in the incident.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said that the late musical artist was ‘definitely [in the] wrong place at the wrong time,’ and that there is ‘no evidence whatsoever to say anything different.’

In announcing the arrest of Clark earlier this month, Finner said a man named Cameron Joshua was also taken into custody in connection with an unlawful carrying of a weapon charge.

Finner said of Joshua: ‘He was there on the scene, and he was in possession of a weapon. He’s a felon.’

The next hearing in the case involving Clark is slated to take place Wednesday.

Man arrested in fatal shooting of Migos rapper Takeoff

HOUSTON (AP) — A 33-year-old man was arrested on a murder charge in the shooting of rapper Takeoff, who police on Friday said was an “innocent bystander” when he was struck by gunfire outside a Houston bowling alley.

Patrick Xavier Clark was taken into custody peacefully Thursday night, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said. Clark’s arrest came one day after another man was charged in connection with the Nov. 1 shooting, which authorities said followed a dispute over a dice game and wounded two other people.

Clark was being held in jail Friday awaiting a bond hearing. Court records do not list an attorney who could speak for him, but indicate he was arrested as he was preparing to leave the country for Mexico.

Born Kirsnick Khari Ball, Takeoff was the youngest member of Migos, the Grammy-nominated rap trio from suburban Atlanta that also featured his uncle Quavo and cousin Offset.

The 28-year-old musician was shot outside the downtown bowling alley at around 2:30 a.m., when police said a dispute erupted as more than 30 people were leaving a private party there. Police previously said another man and a woman suffered non-life-threatening gunshot injuries, and that at least two people opened fired.

Police Sgt. Michael Burrow said during a Friday news conference that the gunfire followed a disagreement over a “lucrative” game of dice, but that Takeoff was not involved and was “an innocent bystander.” Finner said police do not know whether Clark was invited to the party or if he knew Takeoff.

Every person on the scene left without talking to police, Burrow said. Some of those people have since been located by the authorities, who have also worked to piece together events with ballistics, video and audio recordings, according to Burrow. He said investigators are still trying to track down witnesses.

“We will be looking to find you,” he said. “It will be easier if you come find us.”

On Wednesday, authorities announced the arrest of Cameron Joshua in connection to the shooting. Joshua was charged with illegally having a gun at the time Takeoff was shot, but prosecutors said the 22-year-old is not believed to have fired the weapon. Christopher Downey, Joshua’s attorney, told reporters that he has not seen anything to suggest that his client was involved in Takeoff’s killing.

Burrow said that investigators believe it was Clark’s gunfire that killed the rapper.

Prosecutors on Friday asked a court to set Clark’s bond at $1 million, arguing he is a flight risk. After Takeoff’s shooting, Clark applied for an expedited passport by submitting the itinerary for an “imminent” flight to Mexico, according to court records. They say he was arrested the day he received the passport and was in possession of a “large amount” of cash.

Fans and other performers, including Drake and Justin Bieber, celebrated Takeoff’s musical legacy in a memorial service last month in Atlanta.

Migos’ record label, Quality Control, mourned Takeoff’s death in a statement posted on Instagram that attributed it to “senseless violence.”

Migos first broke through with the massive hit “Versace” in 2013. They had four Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, though Takeoff was not on their multi-week No. 1 hit “Bad and Boujee,” featuring Lil Uzi Vert. They put out a trilogy of albums called “Culture,” “Culture II” and “Culture III,” with the first two hitting No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

In the weeks before his death Takeoff, who released the solo album “The Last Rocket” in 2018, and Quavo put out “Only Built for Infinity Links.” Takeoff hoped the joint album with Quavo would build respect for his lyrical abilities, telling the “Drink Champs” podcast, “It’s time to give me my flowers.”

As Clark’s arrest was announced Friday, Takeoff’s voice could again be heard, featured on “Feel The Fiyaaaah” alongside A$AP Rocky on Metro Boomin’s album released that day, “Heroes and Villains.”

He sang, “It’s quiet right now in the streets.”

___

This story was first published on December 2, 2022. It was updated on December 3, 2022 because The Associated Press erroneously reported Takeoff never released a solo record. He released the solo album “The Last Rocket” in 2018.

Takeoff: Houston police make arrest for rapper’s killing

CNN
 —

One man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the killing of rapper Takeoff, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner announced at a news conference Friday.

Patrick Xavier Clark, 33, was arrested on the east side of Houston, Texas, Thursday evening. Another man, Cameron Joshua, 22, was arrested last month and charged with the unlawful carrying of a weapon, the chief said.

Takeoff, who was a member of the platinum-selling rap group Migos, was shot and killed outside a business on November 1 after a private event. He was 28.

“We lost a good man,” Finner said during the news conference. “I didn’t have the pleasure of meeting him but everybody, the hundreds of people that I’ve talked to, spoke on what a great individual he was.”

Though the incident remains an active investigation, what authorities know is that Takeoff was “an innocent bystander,” Sgt. Michael Burrow, with the Houston Police Department’s homicide division, said Friday.

“The event was a private party, there was a lucrative dice game that went on at the event, there was an argument that happened afterwards outside the bowling alley, which led to the shooting,” Burrow said.

Takeoff was not involved in the dice game nor the argument and he was not armed, Burrow said.

Authorities are still working to find and talk to witnesses. There were more than 30 people that were standing outside when the shooting happened, Burrow said.

“Literally every single one of those people left the scene without giving a statement to police,” he said. “We found a few of them that night, we’ve found others since then but it’s important that those people come forward.”

In the meantime, authorities have had to rely on “a large volume of video surveillance,” cell phone videos, audio, physical and ballistic evidence and shooting reconstruction efforts in their investigation.

“Through that, we were able to deduce that Patrick Clark is the lethal shooter in the case,” Burrow said.

Family and fans celebrated the life of rapper Takeoff at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, last month in a three-hour, superstar affair.

The memorial service featured performances from Justin Bieber, Chloe Bailey and Yolanda Adams, as well as a poem by Drake, and words of remembrance from Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and the founders of Migos’ label, Quality Control Music.

Offset, who along with Takeoff’s uncle, Quavo, formed the trio known as Migos, struggled to compose himself remembering his bandmate, who he grew up with and considered a brother.

Takeoff is regarded by many as the best rhymesmith of the trio, and Jesse Curney III, pastor of the Lilburn church Takeoff’s family attends, shared a story that Quavo once told him about Takeoff’s sobriquet.

Where Quavo and Offset needed multiple takes to get their verses onto tracks, retaking and retaking until they got it right, Takeoff – the youngest of the three – would walk up to the mic and lay down his lyrics in one perfect take. “He was an introvert,” the pastor said, “but he trusted God” to not hold back.

Takeoff’s family members took the podium to offer fond memories of the humble, wise, peaceful young man who always wanted to be a rapper but never fretted over credit or the spotlight. Even as a baby, he had a unique voice, his mother, Titania Davenport-Treet, said.

“I could tell his cry from any other child,” she said, adding that God must have given him that voice because he always knew what he wanted to be.

He was quiet but always paid attention, family members said, and he never bothered anyone. He was the funniest guy in the room, and no matter how famous he got, he never stopped putting family first and making sure their needs were met, they said.
