Reddit traders switch sights to silver after equities attack

Retail traders have targeted the silver market following their successful attack against short-sellers of games retailer GameStop.

The world’s largest silver-backed exchange-traded fund, the iShares Silver Trust, recorded almost $1bn in inflows on Friday, according to data from BlackRock, the fund’s sponsor. The jolt of new investments came after a user in Reddit’s WallStreetBets forum urged people to buy shares and options to put a squeeze on banks.

Prices for silver rose by 6 per cent to $28.61/troy ounce in early Asia trading on Monday. That followed a 6 per cent jump last week and a rally in shares in miners of the precious metal, with New York-listed First Majestic rising by 29 per cent. “It’s a fools’ errand, it’s financial anarchy; somebody is going to get hurt,” said Ross Norman, a veteran precious metals trader.

Last week the user TheHappyHawaiian said buying shares in the ETF would “force physical delivery of silver” into the fund’s vaults, thereby causing a “short squeeze” on the market, pushing up the silver price.

The user said on the forum that it would be “incredible” to make large banks active in the futures market “pay dearly” for what he alleged were bets that the silver price will fall. The rallying call echoed that of other WallStreetBets users who last week cheered their success in triggering large losses at Melvin Capital and other hedge funds.

The 37.05m increase in the number of shares of the iShares Silver Trust on Friday was the biggest one-day increase since the ETF started trading in April 2006, data from BlackRock show. The ETF is backed by physical silver held in vaults, meaning it needs to purchase the precious metal when it receives new investments.

The attempted “short squeeze” was reminiscent of a similar effort by oil barons William Herbert Hunt and Nelson Bunker Hunt, known as the Hunt brothers, in 1979 and 1980. They bought billions of dollars worth of silver in an attempt to corner the market. They were later sanctioned for market manipulation and went bankrupt after the silver price collapsed in an event dubbed “Silver Thursday.”

In 1998, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway drove silver prices up 90 per cent to a 10-year high after he quietly accumulated a huge position in the silver market.

Analysts said it would be more difficult for retail investors to influence the silver price as opposed to that of a single equity, given the large off-exchange market for the precious metal where banks trade on behalf of clients.

“We are confident that the influence of retail investors on silver will not last all that long,” analysts at Commerzbank said.

Around $6bn worth of silver traded hands in the silver market in November, according to the latest statistics from the London Bullion Market Association. London’s vaults hold around 33,475 tonnes of silver, valued at $23.8bn, they said in January.

Mr Norman said the Reddit forum’s targeting of large banks was misplaced since they used futures contracts to hedge their physical holdings of silver, meaning they were not speculating on the price falling.

“There is a misnomer here that banks are constantly running short positions, but from a price perspective they are neutral, they have a long and a short that cancels each other out,” he said.

Apex Legends Switch News Coming Very Soon, Says Respawn Entertainment

According to a recent YouTube video and Amazon listing, Respawn Entertainment’s battle royale free-to-play game Apex Legends is arriving next month on 2nd February.

While there’s no official confirmation from EA just yet, the game’s director Chad Grenier has now responded to a question on Twitter – asking when the Switch version of the game will be released. Apparently, Nintendo fans can expect some news very soon. Here’s the full exchange:

Apex Legends was originally scheduled to launch on the Switch last year until Respawn decided to delay the game in October. Grenier said this was to ensure the team did the Switch version “justice”.

There’s also some news about the Japanese retail release via GoNintendo. Somewhat unsurprisingly, it’s filled with “digital-only” content and won’t include a game card.

If Apex Legends is arriving next week, at this rate, it might be a surprise drop on the eShop. Will you be checking out this free-to-play title whenever it does land? Comment below.

Nintendo Switch Getting 2012 Cult-Classic Next Month

Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch are getting a 2012 cult-classic game next month. Game releases on Switch and Switch Lite are pretty slow right now, but that’s about to change. So far, in 2021, Nintendo Switch players have gotten the cloud version of Hitman 3, and not much else. In February, they will get Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Little Nightmares 2, Persona 5 Strikers, Bravely Default 2, and now Thomas Was Alone as well.

Today, Bithell Games announced that their 2D platformer is coming to the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite via the Nintendo eShop next month, on February 19, priced at $10. That said, if you pre-order the game before its release, you can cop it for a special pre-order discount price of $8.

It’s unclear if the Nintendo Switch version comes with any Switch-specific upgrades or features, but we do know it comes with the “Benjamin’s Flight” level pack, which adds new characters and 20 new levels to the game.

First released in 2012, Thomas Was Alone proved to be a bit of a breakout game for the aforementioned developer. Despite only debuting with a 77 on Metacritic, it garnered quite a bit of attention and won quite a few awards come the end of the year.

Thomas Was Alone is the award-winning, critically-acclaimed platformer about friendship and jumping and floating and anti-gravity,” reads an official pitch of the game. “Guide a group of sentient rectangles through a series of obstacles, combining their skills to reach the end of each level. Discover the story of the world’s first sentient AIs, and how they worked together to, well not escape… ‘escape’ is a strong word. Perhaps ’emerge’ might be better. ‘Emerge’ has an air of importance about it, while keeping the various plot twists and origin stories you’ll discover under wraps. We didn’t even mention the bouncing. That would be overkill.”

In addition to $8 or $10, the game requires 792 MB on Switch and Switch Lite. On the pair of consoles, it supports all three modes of play, but only the following language options: English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

Nintendo Unveils Monster Hunter Rise Special Edition Switch Console

@pilot
You should give it a shot. Buy Rise and make a genuine effort to learn the mechanics. It’s the best video game series of all time imo (and in the opinion of many, many others). Everyone loves monster hunter, they just have to play long enough to realize it 😉 (for real though, it’s a game that demands you learn how to play properly before you really start having a lot of fun but once you do, oh my gosh, it’ll make every other game feel boring by comparison).

I happened to get into the series by chance. Was a more casual gamer, 1st party Nintendo games only, bought MH3U on Wii U to try, gave up after the first hour because I wasn’t hunting big monsters yet and it seemed boring. Coworker kept going on and on about just wanting to play some MH. Bought a Wii U specifically to play MH3U. So I decided I would hunt online with him once or twice. And that was it. 600 hours later and I had found my new favorite video game of all time. We’re talking 48 hour binges staying up all night playing, call ins to work, etc. It’s an addiction like nothing else (barring actual drugs).

30 hours into the demo already. That’s more than many full price games. And there’s only two quests lol. That’s how fun the game is. It never gets old. But I don’t recommend you play the demo because it’ll just turn you off because it doesn’t give you time to properly learn all the mechanics. Best thing to do is just buy the game and start from the beginning and get eased in.

Among Us Estimated To Have Sold 3.2 Million Copies On Switch In Launch Month

That’s a lot of imposters

Smash hit multiplayer game Among Us got a surprise release on the Nintendo Switch last December following an indie showcase and ever since it’s been at the top of the eShop charts. It’s only £3.89/$5.00 if you haven’t already picked it up.

According to SuperData, the game is estimated to have already sold a whopping 3.2 million copies on the Switch eShop in the same month and was also apparently the highest-earning version:

Among Us player numbers fell from their November peak, but the game was still 2.8 times as popular as the next most-popular game, Roblox. The title also launched on Nintendo Switch in December. This edition sold 3.2M copies and was the highest-earning version of the game for the month.”

If you’re one of the many people who have already bought the game on Switch, there’s plenty to anticipate – with developer Innersloth currently working on the new Airship map with the plan to release it at some point early this year.

Were you one of the estimated 3.2 million who have purchased Among Us on Switch last month? Tell us in the comments.

Forget PS5 and Xbox Series X — why you should buy Nintendo Switch

While the Nintendo Switch is not brand-new anymore, buying one could be a smarter decision than trying to buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X right now. Getting a hold of the next-gen PlayStation or Xbox is admittedly hard to do. But even if you have the opportunity, you may want to reconsider.

Spending your money on the follow-up to your current console of choice seems like a no-brainer. But what do you actually want from a new console? I’d argue some of the best things about using a new console aren’t actually present in the new PlayStation or Xbox.

Nintendo Switch: What I love

For example, take the game library. The majority of games you can play on the PS5 and Series X are the same ones you can currently play on the PS4 and Xbox One. Furthermore, the handful of platform exclusives may not be that inspiring to you. Meanwhile, over on the Switch, there are more than three years of releases to explore.

The variety of games available is a credit to Nintendo. Naturally, your thoughts may gravitate toward Mario, Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros, Legend of Zelda and the like. These high-quality franchises are good reasons to buy a Nintendo console. However, you’ll also find a surprising number of big third-party games on the Switch. Highlights include Doom and The Witcher 3, as well as one of the best indie game libraries outside of the PC. All of the next-gen exclusives on PS5 and Xbox Series X are firmly big-budget affairs, and many of them are either remakes or sequels. I wouldn’t blame you if these lineups have left you cold.

While it’s nice to chase higher frame rates and prettier graphics, these don’t guarantee you’re going to have fun with a game.

In terms of hardware the Switch has some key advantages, too. By all means, compare TFLOPs and maximum resolution output, and laugh at the meager GPU inside the Switch. But while it’s nice to chase higher frame rates and prettier graphics, these don’t guarantee you’re going to have fun with a game. And if graphics are your priority, then you’re probably better off looking at a gaming PC rather than a console.

Then, there’s the fact that the Switch’s less powerful hardware allows it to be portable: easily its standout feature. I wouldn’t have ever thought about this before I bought my own Switch, but having access to a fully equipped console anywhere is a luxury that can’t be overstated. Even if you’re in lockdown right now to prevent the spread of you-know-what, having the freedom to play games somewhere aside from my desk helps keep the mental divide between work and home life from crumbling.

You get the versatile Joy-Cons to try out, too. These controllers have built-in accelerometers and gyroscopes, while still working similarly to a traditional gamepad. You can still play games as normal, but also try out less traditional motion control experiences. You won’t need extra peripherals, either, such as a costly VR headset. I feel that the Joy-Cons are comfier to use than a normal gamepad, since you can use both halves separated, with your arms relaxed at your sides. Perhaps this isn’t a common way to play, but it’s certainly how I like to use them.

Nintendo Switch: What I don’t love

Let’s be honest about where the Switch is irredeemably weak, though. Multiplayer and online functionality are, to put it bluntly, a mess. Some games require Nintendo’s Switch Online subscription service for online multiplayer, but others let you play over the Internet for free. To activate voice chat, you need to use an app on your smartphone — a device that already does enough without having to be a gaming peripheral as well. This doesn’t bother me, since I’m a solitary gamer most of the time. But going for a Switch probably is a bad idea if you’re a dedicated player of Call of Duty, Fortnite or the like.

In Nintendo’s defense, the Switch is probably the best console for local multiplayer, considering that the Joy-Cons can be used as two separate gamepads. Up to eight Switches with four players apiece can also work together in the same space. Want a second controller for your Xbox or PS5? That’ll be another $70. And good luck gathering enough displays and consoles in one space for a 32-person local PS5/Series X multiplayer session without hiring a community hall.

The Switch’s internal storage is both smaller and slower than what you get with the Sony and Microsoft consoles. You get 825GB of SSD space on the PS5, and a 1TB SSD on the Xbox. The Switch has just 32GB of memory. However, Switch games take up less space as a rule thanks to the lower graphical fidelity. And if you run out of space, at least you can expand the Switch’s memory easily with any microSD card. Compare and contrast to the expensive proprietary SSD drives you’ll need to add more room to the Xbox or PS5.

I think even the most dedicated PlayStation or Xbox fan has a few good reasons to make the switch to a Switch, even once the next major wave of PS5 and Series X stock arrives. Granted, your decision depends on why you enjoy playing games. If you’re into graphical fidelity, robust multiplayer or are a dedicated fan of an exclusive franchise, you may not want a Switch. But if different kinds of games — and access to them outside of your living room — appeal to you more, maybe you should consider Nintendo’s hybrid console instead of Microsoft and Sony’s newest machines.

Video: 13 Great Wii U Games Still Not on Switch

It’s no secret that Switch has nabbed a large chunk of Wii U’s biggest titles such as Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World and many, many more…but there’s still a number of games that remain exclusive to Wii U. We didn’t just want to highlight any old games though, these 13 are legitimately fantastic and we hope to see some of them join the likes of Bayonetta 2 in the series of ports to Switch.

These range from obvious choices such as Xenoblade Chronicles X to lesser known gems like Project Zero: Maiden of Blackwater. Wii U may not have been Nintendo’s most popular machine but that doesn’t devalue how good some of its games were, numerous titles have lived a successful second life on the Switch (Mario Kart 8 ranking as the Switch’s best selling game).

We are however excluding games that have essentially been replaced by similar iterations on Switch. These include Splatoon, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Mario Maker.

Have you played any of the games mentioned in this video and are there any other Wii U games you still have an attachment to?
