New York City man allegedly mows down wife with SUV then stabs her with knife

A Queens, New York man faces charges of attempted murder and assault after allegedly mowing down his wife with a vehicle and stabbing her with a knife.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a press release on Wednesday that Stephen Giraldo, 36, had his three children in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

New York City Police arrested Stephen Giraldo of Queens for allegedly driving an SUV into his wife and stabbing her with a knife.

“The brutality of the attack, and the fact that it was committed in full view of the victim’s three young children, stirs heartbreak and outrage in all of us,” Katz said. “My thoughts are with the children.”

NYC MAN CHARGED IN 2 ‘RANDOM’ SLASHINGS

According to a complaint filed against Giraldo, video surveillance taken at about 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 27 shows him getting into the driver’s seat of a white Ford Explorer parked near the intersection of Sanford Avenue and Parsons Boulevard.

Giradlo’s three children, ages 11, 9 and 6, were in the vehicle when his wife, Sophia Giraldo, walked in front of the SUV.

The complaint alleges that Giraldo told the children, “Keep your seatbelt on,” before accelerating and “barreling” the SUV into his wife. After the collision, the SUV rolled onto its side, and Giraldo crawled out of the passenger window before he allegedly stabbed his wife with a knife.

Giraldo was at the scene when police arrived, the press release read.

Sophia Giraldo was taken to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries, including broken bones in her leg, a stab wound that pierced her liver and caused severe neurological damage.

Her husband was charged with second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Judge Scott Dunn remanded Giraldo, who is due back in court on Jan. 12, 2023.

If convicted, he faces up to 25 years behind bars.

Derek Jeter promotes Jeep Grand Wagoneer SUV

Derek Jeter will star with his wife, fashion model and television host Hannah Jeter, in the Grand Wagoneer’s new “Eyes Wide Open” campaign as part of a long-term partnership.

Jeep

DETROIT — New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter and his wife, Hannah Jeter, have agreed to a multiyear deal with Jeep to promote the company’s Grand Wagoneer SUV.

The Hall of Fame shortstop and Hannah Jeter, a model and television host, will star in a new ad campaign for the full-size luxury SUV. A 60-second ad featuring the vehicle and couple was broadcast Friday night during game one of Major League Baseball’s World Series between the Houston Astros and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Olivier Francois, chief marketing officer of Stellantis, which owns Jeep, said the Jeters were selected because of their family, rise to fame and connection to Michigan. Derek Jeter grew up in the state and it’s where the large SUV is being produced.

“We needed a personality that symbolizes American success,” Francois told reporters during a media briefing. “They are just the embodiment of the American dream.”

Stellantis, which was formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and France-based Groupe PSA in January 2021, declined to comment on the cost of the partnership and ad campaign.

The Grand Wagoneer, which can top $110,000 when fully loaded, is a three-row luxury SUV. It is an important product as the quintessential American SUV brand attempts to move upmarket.

Francois, who is well known for creative ads with celebrities, compared the new campaign to a 2011 Super Bowl ad with Detroit rapper Eminem.

Much like the Eminem ad, the commercial with the Jeters cuts between scenic city sites, a vehicle and the stars, with a voiceover dramatically discussing rebirth, dreams and success.

The campaign was filmed in New York City, including Greenwich Village, as well as upstate New York. It was created in partnership with Highdive agency in Chicago.

Darrell Brooks: Man who drove SUV into Waukesha Christmas parade found guilty of intentional homicide

CNN
 —

Darrell Brooks was found guilty of six counts of first-degree intentional homicide on Wednesday for driving his SUV into a crowd of Christmas parade attendees in Waukesha, Wisconsin, last November, killing six people and wounding dozens more.

He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison for the convictions.

Brooks, 40, also was convicted of 61 counts of recklessly endangering safety with the use of a dangerous weapon, six counts of fatal hit and run, two counts of felony bail jumping and one count of misdemeanor domestic battery – a clean sweep for the prosecution.

Brooks represented himself in court and has been combative throughout the trial, repeatedly speaking over the judge to make inane and outlandish arguments. Yet as the stream of guilty verdicts were read Wednesday, he looked down, put his head on his hands and sat silently.

The trial comes less than a year after he drove a red SUV through the crowd in Waukesha’s Christmas parade on November 21, killing an 8-year-old boy and several members of the “Dancing Grannies” group.

Brooks had been released from jail less than two weeks prior in a domestic abuse case, on a $1,000 bail that prosecutors later acknowledged was “inappropriately low.” In that case, he allegedly ran over a woman who said she’s the mother of his child, according to court documents.

Prosecutors said in closing arguments Tuesday he intentionally drove through the crowd at significant speeds and hit 68 individual parade-goers, turning a joyous afternoon into a horrific one.

‘It was zooming’: Man marching in parade describes SUV plowing through crowd

“He reached speeds of approximately 30 mph. That’s intentional. He plowed through 68 different people. 68. How can you hit one and keep going? How can you hit two and keep going?” Waukesha County District Attorney Susan Opper said.

“His intent I do have to prove, and I submit without any doubt there’s overwhelming evidence that this was an intentional act by Darrell Brooks and an act of utter disregard for human life.”

In his own closing arguments, Brooks attempted to raise questions about the vehicle and about his intent. He repeatedly said there had been “misconceptions” and “lies” told about him during the trial.

“I’ve never heard of someone trying to intentionally hurt someone while attempting to blow their horn while attempting to alert people of their presence,” Brooks said.

Jurors deliberated on Tuesday night for just under two hours and then resumed again on Wednesday morning.

In court, a series of videos and witnesses detailed the disturbing sights of the SUV ramming through the parade route.

“The band had just passed us, a red SUV … going maybe 30, 40 miles per hour, just went straight over the Waukesha South (high school) band,” said Kyle Jewell, a spectator who tried unsuccessfully to catch up to the SUV to stop it. “And it’s not like it stopped, it went over … it looked like it went in the air, like over a pretty big object, and it was just like a big old speed bump and kept going.”

Nicole White, who prosecutors said was the first person struck by Brooks’ vehicle, testified she sustained injuries to her spine and tailbone and suffered ligament damage to her right knee.

“I just remember being struck by the vehicle from behind on my back and then I fell to my knees and kind of rolled under the vehicle,” White said.

Brooks’ trial has been marked by his unusual decision to represent himself in court and his persistent disruptions. Throughout the trial, he has spoken over prosecutors and the judge, asked vague questions, challenged the court’s jurisdiction and declared “Darrell Brooks” is not his name.

Judge Jennifer Dorow has repeatedly removed Brooks from the court for his outbursts and placed him in a nearby courtroom, where he can communicate via a monitor and microphone which is most often muted.

On Tuesday, after removing him for the prosecution’s closing arguments due to interruptions, she called him “stubbornly defiant.”

“He continues to not respect the fact that a ruling has been made, and he wants to argue and reargue and reargue points that this court has already gone over,” she said.

Brooks previously pleaded not guilty by insanity, but his public defenders withdrew the insanity plea in September. The attorneys later filed a motion to withdraw from the case, and the judge ruled to allow Brooks to represent himself at trial.

Opper, the prosecuting attorney, told jurors in her closing arguments not to be distracted in their deliberations by Brooks’ conduct during the trial.

“You must not, not, not consider anything about Darrell Brooks other than his conduct in downtown Waukesha on the evening of November 21, 2021,” Opper told the jury. “Nothing he’s done before that, nothing he’s done since that. When you go back to that deliberation room, please obey Judge Dorow. Confine your comments to his conduct on November 21.”

Polestar unveils $84,000 electric SUV, Polestar 3, to cement U.S. foothold

Polestar 3

Swedish EV maker Polestar on Wednesday unveiled a new electric SUV that it’s counting on to expand its sales and presence in the United States.

The new model, called the Polestar 3, is a five-passenger EV that the company describes as a “performance SUV.” It’ll launch with a 111 kilowatt-hour battery and a dual-motor configuration that delivers up to 517 horsepower with an estimated 300 miles of EPA-rated range.

Priced at about $84,000, the car comes loaded with technology, including an Nvidia computer running advanced driver-assist software developed by Polestar’s part owner, Volvo Cars.

Only one version of the Polestar 3 will be available at launch, though less expensive trims are expected to follow. An optional “Pilot Pack” will add a Luminar lidar unit and other sensors needed for autonomous driving, which Polestar expects to make available in the future via an over-the-air update.

It’s a step up in size, performance, technology and price from the company’s current model, the Polestar 2 crossover, which starts at around $48,000. The Polestar 1 was a limited-production hybrid coupe, now discontinued.

It’s also something of a step up in price from what will likely be its main competitor: Tesla’s Model Y, which costs about $70,000 in similar dual-motor trim. Another potential rival, BMW’s all-electric iX SUV, starts at about $85,000.

The Polestar 3 will be built in China, starting next year, and in the U.S. — at a Volvo Cars factory in South Carolina — starting in mid-2024. Deliveries are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Polestar expects to deliver 50,000 vehicles to customers around the world in 2022. Through September, it had delivered about 30,400, it said last week.

Polestar is a joint venture between Volvo Cars and Chinese automaker Geely, which has owned Volvo Cars since 2010. Polestar went public via a merger with a special purpose acquisition company in June. Its shares have fallen about 58% since.

2 cyclists killed and 3 injured by an SUV that crossed over the center line, authorities say

The five cyclists were all participating in the Make-A-Wish bicycle tour, a three-day fundraising event and endurance ride that spans most of the state, according to the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office.
The cyclists were traveling southbound when the SUV, which was traveling northbound, crossed the center line, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

Ionia County is roughly 40 miles east of Grand Rapids.

One cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene while another died from injuries at a nearby hospital, the sheriff’s office said. The three surviving cyclists were transported to hospitals with severe injuries, officials added.

The driver of the SUV was arrested on two counts of Operating while Intoxicated Causing Death and taken to the Ionia County Jail, the sheriff’s office added. Authorities did not release the driver’s name pending charges and an arraignment.

The names of the cyclists were also not released. An investigation is ongoing, the sheriff’s office added.

The Make-a-Wish Foundation expressed its condolences towards the cyclists and their loved ones in a statement shared with CNN.

“Our staff and the entire Make-A-Wish family are heartbroken and offer our deepest sympathy for the riders involved, their loved ones, and all members of the WAM community during this difficult time,” the organization said. “We are thankful to the first responders who arrived immediately to save lives. We are supporting our riders, staff, and volunteers with grief counseling and assisting with the law enforcement investigation.”

A Bigger Porsche SUV Is Coming for Cayenne, And Will Be An EV

The Porsche Cayenne has been a runaway success for the German carmaker, because, of course! Crossovers and SUVs just sell more cars than pure performance models like the 911.
Photo: Porsche

A new Porsche SUV is joining the lineup to unseat the Porsche Cayenne as the biggest performance car from Stuttgart, and this new sizable SUV will be an EV. The upcoming Porsche will build on the success of the Porsche Cayenne and Macan, but will slot above both models as the company’s flagship SUV — which only happens to be electric. But it’s going to be pricey, according to Auto News.

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume confirmed the flagship SUV is coming within a few years; production isn’t slated to begin until the middle of the decade in Leipzig. Assuming that means 2025-2026, the SUV has a ways to go before taking the Cayenne’s place atop the range, and as one of Porsche’s best-selling models.

The wait will have been worth it for the performance carmaker, however, as Blume went on to say that the Porsche EV SUV will be targeting “higher margin segments in particular and aim to tap into new sales opportunities.” That’s CEO-speak for “we’re gonna sell a lot of big, expensive SUVs,” which makes sense given the public’s infatuation with the segment. The bigger the better!

Photo: Porsche

To that end, this new Porsche SUV, codenamed K1, will possibly even come with a third row — a Porsche first. But the Porsche K1 will nonetheless debut a “very sporty interpretation of an SUV.” Porsche already pulled that off with the mid-size Cayenne, but has yet to show it can graft the performance it’s known for onto a longer and wider SUV.

With the timeline of production being out a few years, and possible release further ahead in the second half of the decade, it makes sense the Porsche K1 will be fully-electric. Porsche wants EVs to account for 80 percent of its global sales by 2030, and the unexpected success of the Porsche Taycan bodes well for that goal. The Taycan now outsells the Porsche 911, per AN, proving the viability of EVs to the brand. Another Porsche EV has been delayed, but is coming in 2024: a Porsche Macan EV that’ll be smaller than the flagship Porsche K1.

Details and specifications are still scarce for now, but the Porsche K1 will likely take after technology from the Mission R — an EV concept Porsche showed off at the 2021 IAA car show in Munich. The tech that the Porsche K1 will borrow from the Mission R reportedly includes a 920-volt electrical system for faster charging, a high-performance battery and a direct oil-cooled electric motor. The future of Porsche is EVs, SUVs, and also EV SUVs but, maybe, just fewer 911s.
