From start to finish, Sunday’s Falcon Heavy launch delivered spectacular imagery

Enlarge / A Falcon Heavy rocket launched about 10 minutes after sunset on Sunday from Florida.

The Falcon Heavy rocket made its fifth launch in five years on Sunday evening from Florida. However, this was the first launch of the triple-core booster in twilight, and this rare evening light provided some spectacular new insights into the liftoff and return of the rocket.

This post-sunset lighting can be seen in the introductory image above, which showcases reddish hues bouncing off the white cores and upper stage. That color comes from the rocket gaining enough altitude to be in line of sight with the Sun.

Now the second-most powerful rocket in the world after NASA’s Space Launch System, the Falcon Heavy always puts on a great show, with its 27 Merlin engines firing at once. It holds the record for the rocket with the most first-stage engines to reach orbit—at least, it will until SpaceX’s Starship rocket flies later this year.

Sunday’s launch was named USSF-67 and carried two payloads into geostationary orbit for the US Space Force. This was the second Falcon Heavy launch for the Space Force, with another scheduled for later this spring.

This engine shot showcases the three separate cores of the rocket, each a modified version of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, with its own individual plume.

The rocket is seen here climbing into the sky before booster separation, which happens about 2 minutes and 30 seconds into the launch. After this point, the side-mounted boosters will separate from the center core of the rocket.

The center core then burns for an additional 30 seconds before its kerosene and liquid oxygen propellant are expended. In the meantime, the side-mounted boosters must arrest their forward motion and reorient themselves for a return to landing zones a few kilometers from the launch site.

Bills’ Damar Hamlin is breathing on his own and talked to teammates, bolstering them for Sunday’s regular season finale

CNN
 —

Just four days after his stunning on-field cardiac arrest, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is breathing on his own and speaking to family, physicians and teammates – positive updates that Bills players say will bolster them in this weekend’s matchup against the New England Patriots.

“To hear him talk to us, it was everything, and that’s what we needed. Literally that’s all we needed,” Bills offensive tackle Dion Dawkins said of the team’s Friday video call with Hamlin, who is still undergoing treatment at a Cincinnati hospital.

Hamlin – who was sedated and placed on a ventilator after his collapse Monday – began awakening late this week and was able to have his breathing tube removed before Friday morning, physicians have said.

“Love you boys,” the 24-year-old player told his team Friday via FaceTime, according to head coach Sean McDermott, who added that Hamlin flexed his arms and made his signature heart-shaped hand gesture during the call.

Since he collapsed during the “Monday Night Football” game between the Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals, Hamlin “continues to progress remarkably in his recovery” and “his neurologic function remains intact,” the Bills tweeted Friday, citing his physicians.

Dawkins described the emotional “roller coaster” this week has been for the team – who watched in shock as Hamlin received CPR on the field and was carried from the stadium in an ambulance. But he said news of Hamlin’s significant improvement “will for sure fuel us” in the team’s Sunday showdown against the Patriots.

“The excitement was beautiful, it was amazing,” he said of the call with Hamlin. “It has given us so much energy, so much bright, high spirits – whatever you want to call it – it has given it to us to see that boy’s face.”

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said Hamlin’s continued recovery is “uplifting news” for the city of Buffalo, which has recently been struck by several tragedies, including a racist mass shooting and a brutal blizzard that left at least 41 dead in Erie County.

“What happened to Damar Hamlin, his injury, was another gut punch to the city of Buffalo and to see him recovering so remarkably is certainly lifting spirits throughout our community and across the country,” Brown told CNN’s Kate Bolduan Friday.

After millions witnessed Hamlin’s emergency play out live, a wave of support has emerged from fans and strangers across the nation, many of whom have purchased his jersey or donated to his foundation’s charity fund, which has topped $8 million raised as of Saturday morning. Teams across the NFL have also rallied behind the Bills player by wearing his number, 3, lighting up stadiums and scoreboards, and sharing words of solidarity.

Displays of support will continue this weekend as the league prepares for an emotional return to competition for the final games of the regular season on Saturday and Sunday. The NFL plans to honor Hamlin before each game.

The NFL announced Thursday the Bills-Bengals game – which was initially postponed Monday night – will not be resumed or made up.

The cancellation will have no effect on which teams qualify for the playoffs, as both the Bills and Bengals have already secured spots. But the imbalance in number of games played has prompted the league to approve unprecedented provisions for the postseason based on how the Bills and Bengals are seeded and their potential opponents.

As players head into the final week of the regular season, the NFL announced several ways that teams may honor Hamlin before this weekend’s matchups, including holding a “moment of support” before games or outlining the “3” on the 30-yard line in the Bills’ red or blue colors.

Players also have the option to wear shirts emblazoned with “Love for Damar 3” during warmups and the Bills will wear “3” patches on their jerseys, the NFL said.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane – who stayed in Cincinnati following the game’s postponement to be with Hamlin and his family – praised the unified message of support across the league this week, noting how characteristically competitive the sport is.

“Yeah, we go to battle. But in the end, life is the number one battle,” Beane said Friday. “And to see that unity from players, coaches, (general managers), owners, fans, is unheard of. But I think it’s a good light. It sheds a great light on the NFL. The NFL is truly a family.”

The NFL Players Association named Hamlin its Community MVP of Week 18, announcing that the organization will donate $10,000 to his Chasing M’s Foundation.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Miles Sanders said he was able to video chat with Hamlin, telling him, “You know you’re the most famous person in the world right now?”

Hamlin replied, “But not for the right reasons,” according to Sanders, who told Hamlin, “You’re blessed, bro, you don’t know how blessed you are.”

Sanders describe Hamlin as his best friend and said the two spoke after every game, according to NFL Network reporter James Palmer.

Sunday’s Bills-Browns game moved to Detroit, fans to receive ticket refunds purchased through the Bills or Ticketmaster

Bills EVP/COO Ron Raccuia and Bills GM Brandon Beane held a press conference via Zoom Thursday evening to discuss the change in location for Sunday’s game and other important topics including ticket info. Here is a summarized version of what Raccuia and Beane had to say.

Q: How was the decision reached to move the game to Detroit?

Raccuia: “The decision to move the game to Detroit has everything to do about safety. Safety first has been what we’ve been talking about here really for the last 48 to 72 hours. I do want to thank county executive Poloncarz, Governor Hochul, all of our elected officials, certainly (NFL) Commissioner (Rodger) Goodell and the entire league staff, and the lions organization for their commitment and communication and helping us move the game. As I said earlier, our sole concern was the safety of our players, our fans, our community, and making sure we did not divert any resources that the community will need coming this weekend.”

Q: Will tickets be refunded?

Raccuia: “We just actually put out an email to all the existing ticket holders for the game. So our fans will have a refund opportunity, depending on how they purchase their ticket. But I would ask them to check the emails that they should have received probably about five or 10 minutes ago actually. Those will all be refunded.”

Q: Are tickets transferrable for the game being played in Detroit?

Raccuia: “No transfer option. It’s really two separate transactions. Everyone’s tickets will automatically be credited depending on how they were purchased. So if they purchased on the Bills online, it’ll be credited that way, Ticketmaster, that way, season ticket members, directly to their season ticket account. And the new on-sale will be completely separate starting tomorrow. “

Q: What are the team travel plans?

Beane: We are going to try to keep a normal travel schedule. Obviously, we’re going to track the weather, but right now, we’re setting up a plane to leave sometime Saturday afternoon. We’re going to have to wait til we hear from the airline when they can get it here. But we would try to keep it as a close to our normal routine as possible. So right now, as long as the weather is what we anticipate for Sunday, we would fly back after the game. You know the game’s going to be at 1 so we can kind of have our normal routine and then fly back there on Wednesday.

Q: Any frustration about not having a home game?

Beane: Well, I’m counting on you to rally all the BillsMafia to show up. In all seriousness, we’re hoping for this to be still a home field advantage away. Luckily it’s not across the country. We know BillsMafia is all over, and hopefully those that are in Michigan area will definitely down. And hopefully the ones here that want to get out of the snow, will drive over there.

Ravens vs. Dolphins score: Live updates, game stats, highlights for Sunday’s Week 2 AFC showdown

The Baltimore Ravens certainly know how to set fireworks off in their home opener, scoring 28 points in the first half en route to a 28-7 halftime lead over the Miami Dolphins. Devin Duvernay started the performance with a 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the game, giving Baltimore a lead it wouldn’t relinquish in the first half.

Lamar Jackson has three touchdown passes in the first half, including a 75-yard pass to Rashod Bateman that put the Ravens up 14-7. Tua Tagovailoa found Jaylen Waddle after going 5 of 5 for 97 yards a six-play, 94-yard drive to tie the game up 7-7 moments before Jackson found Bateman on that next play of the Ravens ensuing possession. Jackson later found Mark Andrews on the Ravens’ next possession for a 1-yard touchdown to put Baltimore up 21-7. His final touchdown pass was to Demarcus Robinson for a 12-yard score to put Baltimore up 28-7.

Marcus Williams has two interceptions off Tagovailoa. He had just two interceptions all of last year and has three in two games with the Ravens.

Based on what we saw in the first half, the Ravens appear poised to make a statement in this one. You’ll want to follow along all the action in the live blog below! We’ll have all the updates and analysis from this one!

How a Jazz Musician and Entrepreneur Spends His Sundays

The jazz bass player Matthew Garrison doesn’t like to slow down. “I’m always thinking, doing,” he said.

As a performer, he has toured with Herbie Hancock, and as a producer, he is helping to organize upcoming shows with the pianist Jason Moran, the drummer Jack DeJohnette and others. But most days, he is focused on producing music events through ShapeShifter Lab and its nonprofit arm, ShapeShifter Plus. He also created the app Tunebend, which facilitates virtual collaborating and recording among musicians.

Mr. Garrison, who is the son of Jimmy Garrison, the bassist for John Coltrane, seems to like pushing boundaries in the jazz world. “I’m really tired of the stagnant music scene, where this club only books a certain type of band and that club only books musicians that play this genre,” he said.

For a decade, Mr. Garrison ran a performance space in Gowanus, Brooklyn, also called the ShapeShifter Lab, but it closed last year. Soon, he will open a new venue. “My new space will be a place for performers, those genius rejects, who would not otherwise be able to play in the city.”

Mr. Garrison, 52, lives in Park Slope with his business partner, Fortuna Sung, 51.

DARK AND QUIET Time has been wonky post-pandemic. It sounds horrible, but sometimes I wake up as early as 4 a.m. I get a lot of work out of the way. I code for my apps, including Tunebend, and organize things on my computer for a few hours because everyone is asleep. There’s no one around calling, texting or bugging you.

CAFFEINATED NAP I might have some coffee and a light breakfast. I have a weird relationship with coffee these days. It doesn’t keep me awake. I now use coffee as a sleep aid. I don’t know how that works. So after I work for a few hours and drink some coffee, I often go back to sleep.

WORKING WEEKEND I wake up again around 9 or 10 a.m. and I’ll have another cup of coffee. The music industry is a 24-hour thing. I communicate with folks in Europe and Japan all the time, so my weekends don’t count as a day off. I have to divide my work hours and devote certain days to my three ventures to get everything done. On Sundays, I try to get to the stuff I couldn’t do during the weekday. But I make a mess if I multitask too much.

STEPS Then I might compose for several hours. Or I go take a walk in Prospect Park or zigzag through neighborhood streets. Sometimes I venture out into Gowanus and Carroll Gardens. Fortuna says I walk too fast, but I need to get my heart rate up. My body is telling me I need it.

SONG LAYERS I listen to music on Tunebend while I walk. I listen to see how all the bits and pieces that were recorded can become layers in a song. You can swap out different performers for the same part, so I do a lot of listening and rearranging. But I’m also interacting with the app as a user to see if anything needs to be tweaked. I know it doesn’t seem like it, but this is how I decompress.

PIECING IT TOGETHER When you’re coding or composing music, you’re problem-solving. You’re in continuous research mode to figure out why something is done in a particular way. In the jazz world, there’s so much that you have to know and be able to play in a fraction of a second. In coding, you also have to remember all these bits and pieces to build something. The only difference between the two worlds is the pay!

NEW SPACE I finally got the keys to a new performance space that we’ll open by the end of the year. So far I’ve done a livestream workshop on how to use the Tunebend app, but I’m gearing up for a lot of fund-raising so we can put on shows and events for all types of musicians here.

SUSTENANCE We get our errands done in the neighborhood, including groceries from the Park Slope Food Co-op. Fortuna, whose family is from Hong Kong, is the better cook. Her artist parents also owned and operated a restaurant, so she knows her way around a kitchen. When we eat out, it might be Japanese or Thai. Today we had dinner with my mom at Littleneck.

OLD-PEOPLE TIME After dinner, I’ll watch TV or read. I’m news-centric: There’s so much stuff to keep up with, which makes me understand how I can make this world a better place. I also like tech stuff, like articles about the newest plug-ins for music software. My mom still scolds me that all my reading is done on a screen. Now I’m on old-people time: I’m in bed by 9 or 10 p.m.

Sunday Routine readers can follow Matthew Garrison on Instagram and Twitter @garrisonjazz.
