Messi summons magic in time to rescue Argentina against Mexico

LUSAIL, Qatar — For the first 63 minutes of Argentina’s surprisingly crucial second match at the 2022 World Cup, Lionel Messi was the picture of frustration.

Toggling between the right flank and the center of the field, he barely touched the ball against a Mexico team hellbent on containing him.

On the rare occasions that he did, he tried to do too much. With a gaggle of El Tri defenders tracking his every move, there was always a sea of green shirts around him. He’d beat one or two, only to be dispossessed before he could break into open space or play a quick one-two with a teammate.

Argentina-Mexico highlights

With his team on the brink and struggling to break through, Leo Messi found his usual magic to spark Argentina to a 2-0 victory over Mexico.

With almost 90,000 expectant fans inside Lusail Iconic Stadium watching his every move, the tension built to an almost excruciating level as the seconds ticked away. Could it really end the way it has so many times before in his national team shirt for the greatest player who has ever lived: in misery?

The difference this time was that there would be no chance for redemption. The 35-year-old Messi announced before the tournament that this World Cup, his fifth, would be his last. That beautiful golden trophy is the only one he has never won, the lone blemish on an otherwise incomparable career.

This year was supposed to be different. This is the best Albiceleste team Messi has ever had around him. This supporting cast helped him win the Copa America last summer, his first title for his country. The storybook ending was supposed to come at the final whistle of the World Cup final at this same stadium next month.

But a shocking loss to Saudi Arabia in Argentina’s opening game in Qatar allowed the pressure and the doubt to creep back in. Argentina needed to beat Mexico — or at least not lose — Saturday to restore its championship dreams and the hopes of soccer fans around the globe that Messi would get the send-off he so richly deserves.

Leave it to the little magician to do it all by himself.

Just after the hour mark, Messi showed exactly why he’s the GOAT — and why he’s far from done yet. Bursting into a void in front of El Tri’s backline, he found himself with the ball at his famous left foot.

Time stood still. Messi cocked back his leg and stroked the ball along the turf just out of reach of Mexico keeper Memo Ochoa, just inside the far post.

The goal sent tens of thousands of traveling Argentine fans behind the goal into rapture. It was a perfect strike from a perfect player, and it came when they, and he, needed it the most.

Surely even the Mexican supporters in attendance — the raucous, deafening crowd was about evenly split between green and baby blue — couldn’t begrudge him it.

That’s how revered Messi has become across planet football. He has given soccer lovers so much joy, for so long, that it’s almost impossible to root against him. It doesn’t matter if you’re Brazilian or a Madridista, everybody understands and can appreciate just how special Messi is.

With all the tension released into the ether, after Messi’s moment of brilliance Argentina took over. Enzo Fernandez put the game away on a Messi assist with three minutes of regular time remaining.

The job isn’t complete, of course. It’s just getting started. Argentina has only three points from their first two games and still has to face Robert Lewandowski’s Poland — which beat the Saudis 2-0 a few hours earlier — in the Group C finale Wednesday. But La Albiceleste did what they needed to Saturday. Rather than crumble under the weight of enormous expectation, they responded and reclaimed their status as one of the title favorites.

Now, they have momentum as well as every neutral behind them.

After staring the unthinkable — elimination from World Cup contention before even playing their third first-round game — in the face for more than an hour, the dream remains alive.

Messi is on a mission. It’s not over, not by a long shot.

His heroics Saturday proved Argentina and the GOAT can still win this World Cup, even if he has to drag his team to the podium all by himself.

Pakistan summons U.S. ambassador over Biden’s nuclear remarks

KARACHI, Pakistan, Oct 15 (Reuters) – Pakistan’s foreign minister said on Saturday he had summoned the U.S. ambassador after President Joe Biden questioned the safety of Pakistan’s nuclear programme.

In a speech on Thursday, Biden said Pakistan is “maybe one of the most dangerous nations in the world” as it has “nuclear weapons without any cohesion”.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said he was surprised by the comments. “As far as the question of the safety and security of Pakistan’s nuclear assets are concerned, we meet all – each and every – international standard in accordance with the IAEA,” he said at a press conference on Saturday.

A transcript of Biden’s speech was published by the White House on its website.

Bhutto-Zardari said he didn’t think the decision to summon the U.S. ambassador would negatively affect relations with the United States, and said officials could address any specific concerns Washington had on the nuclear programme.

“The United States regularly meets with Pakistani officials.” A U.S. State Department spokesperson in Washington told Reuters in a statement, adding: “As standard practice, we do not comment on the specifics of private diplomatic conversations.”

Ties between Islamabad and Washington, once close allies, have just started to warm after some years of frosty relations, mostly due to concerns about Pakistan’s alleged support of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Pakistan denies this support.

The foreign minister said worries about Pakistan’s nuclear programme were not raised on his recent trip to Washington, where he held extensive meetings, including at the State Department.

White House summons Chinese ambassador for rebuke on Taiwan response

Comment

The White House summoned China’s ambassador on Thursday to condemn Beijing’s escalating actions against Taiwan and reiterate that the United States does not want a crisis in the region, after a visit to the island by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) sharply escalated tensions in the Taiwan Strait this week.

“After China’s actions overnight, we summoned [People’s Republic of China] Ambassador Qin Gang to the White House to démarche him about the PRC’s provocative actions,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said in a statement provided to The Washington Post. “We condemned the PRC’s military actions, which are irresponsible and at odds with our long-standing goal of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.” A démarche is a protest lodged through diplomatic channels.

China’s show of force against Taiwan on Thursday included firing missiles into the sea and threatening the island’s territorial waters. Taiwan said China fired 11 ballistic missiles into the waters off its northeastern and southwestern coasts, and Japanese officials said five Chinese missiles landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

The White House also reiterated to Qin that it wants to keep all lines of communication open and that nothing has changed about the United States’ one-China policy, which stipulates that there is a single Chinese entity and no independent enclaves. But the White House also stressed that it found Beijing’s actions unacceptable and would stand up for its values in the Indo-Pacific.

The meeting, which has not been previously reported, was between Qin and Kurt Campbell, deputy assistant to President Biden and coordinator for Indo-Pacific affairs on the National Security Council, according to a White House official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share details of a private conversation.

China’s military actions Thursday increased tensions in the Taiwan Strait to the highest level in decades, raising fears of a dangerous miscalculation in one of the world’s most charged geopolitical flash points. Beijing has openly voiced its anger over Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, which it considers part of its territory awaiting unification, and U.S.-China relations were already strained because of disputes over trade, human rights and other issues.

Pelosi: Why I’m visiting Taiwan

The White House highlighted to Qin a statement from the Group of Seven industrialized democracies, Kirby said, which stressed that China should not use Pelosi’s visit as a pretext for aggressive military action in the Taiwan Strait. The White House also expressed support for a statement from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, which called on all sides to de-escalate tensions and engage in dialogue.

“We made clear once again as we have done privately at the highest levels and publicly: Nothing has changed about our one-China policy. We also made clear that the United States is prepared for what Beijing chooses to do,” Kirby said. “We will not seek and do not want a crisis. At the same time, we will not be deterred from operating in the seas and skies of the Western Pacific, consistent with international law, as we have for decades — supporting Taiwan and defending a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said the Eastern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) carried out long-range, live-fire exercises and “precision strikes” on eastern parts of the strait. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said the PLA fired 11 Dongfeng ballistic missiles.

The White House sought to de-escalate tensions with China ahead of and during Pelosi’s visit, which the speaker undertook against the administration’s wishes. White House officials warned earlier this week that China was preparing for possible aggressive actions that could continue well beyond Pelosi’s visit.

Virtually all the senior members of Biden’s national security team had privately expressed deep reservations about the trip and its timing, the White House official said. They were especially concerned because U.S.-China tensions are already high, and Washington is seeking China’s cooperation on the war in Ukraine and other matters.

Top White House officials defended Pelosi’s right to travel to Taiwan both publicly and to their counterparts in China, but even so, some of them still did not think the trip was a good idea, the official said.

China has sought for years to diplomatically isolate Taiwan. The Chinese Communist Party claims the island, a self-governing democracy that is home to more than 23 million people, as its territory, and Chinese leader Xi Jinping has pledged to “reunify” Taiwan with China, by force if necessary.

Chinese ambassador: Why we opposed Pelosi’s visit

But Pelosi doubled down on Thursday, saying China would not succeed in bullying the island.

“They may try to keep Taiwan from visiting or participating in other places, but they will not isolate Taiwan,” Pelosi said in Tokyo, the last stop of her tour. “They are not doing our traveling schedule. The Chinese government is not doing that.”

At a news briefing Thursday, Kirby said the United States is responding to China’s actions.

The United States will conduct standard air and maritime transits through the Taiwan Strait over the next few weeks, he said, and will take “further steps” to stand with its allies in the region, including Japan, although he did not specify what those actions would be. The aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan and its battle group will remain near Taiwan to monitor the situation, Kirby added.

Tesla Model X Owner Summons SUV Into A Jet … A True Edge Case

There’s a viral video out there of a Tesla Model X on Summon crashing into a $3.5 million jet. It’s unclear how/why someone could do such a thing, or let such a collision take place, but nonetheless, this is an edge case for Tesla that could help the company’s AI learn and prevent any such accidents in the future.

It’s not every day a driver crosses paths with an aircraft. The Verge reported that it happened at an event sponsored by Cirrus at Felts Field in Spokane, Washington. The video was originally shared in the r/flying subreddit, and it looks as though it was captured by security cameras.

One thing Teslarati noted that I didn’t see other articles pointing out was that it’s not exactly known when the vehicle was manufactured, and also there was no real explanation as to why it didn’t stop before it reached the jet. Also, as many members of the Tesla community have noted, it appears that the part of the aircraft that the Model X hit was not on the road but in the air and barely low enough to be nudged by the Model X. That doesn’t mean that the Model X should have driven into it, but it’s certainly a true edge case.

I find it really strange that the owner of the vehicle didn’t seem to notice the jet in the path of the Model X, or the car being so close to the jet. However, @WholeMarsCatalog points out that at least this will make Tesla’s software “more robust against crazy future situations.”

The Verge went on to mention a couple of not-so-positive reports about Tesla, FSD, and Smart Summon, but I didn’t see any references to stories of how this technology has helped make lives easier and even saved some as well. Teslarati pointed to an experiment by Kevin Rooke, who has extensively tested his Tesla’s Summon feature in various ways. The video below shows Kevin’s test with a shopping cart. The vehicle handled the test pretty well.

Let’s not forget, while I was waiting on an Uber a year ago, I saw Smart Summon in action during a sudden summer storm. I didn’t get to talk with the Tesla owner, but I did grab some video and you can watch the vehicle smoothly navigate the rainy weather and other cars while being summoned to its owner. (Note: I was stranded and Uber was telling me that there were no cars available. However, I was eventually able to get one and had to wait a while, which provided me the perfect opportunity to grab this video.)

Don’t let this viral video of a Tesla bumping into a jet fool you into thinking that all Teslas crash into airplanes now. It’s a truly odd edge case, and I agree with Whole Mars that it will make the technology even better.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Super Bowl movie trailer summons Robotnik’s mech

Paramount Pictures gave Sonic the Hedgehog fans a peek at Sunday’s big matchup — Sonic and Tails vs. Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles the Echidna, that is — in a new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 released Friday. A brief, mostly new “Big Game Spot” shows Sonic and Knuckles both squaring off over the Chaos Emeralds and sparring on the slopes. You may recall that Sonic is a master snowboarder and headlined not one, but three video games premised around sci-fi snowboarding.

We also get a very good look at a massive Death Egg Robot, Dr. Robotnik’s giant mech suit that, like Miles “Tails” Prower, first appeared in 1992’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the video game. But outside of an “I understood that reference” joke that likens Knuckles to a brainwashed Bucky Barnes, Sonic superfans won’t see too much new in Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s Super Bowl trailer.

Ben Schwartz reprises his role as the blue blur in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, with Idris Elba joining as Knuckles. Colleen O’Shaughnessey, longtime voice of Tails, reprises her role as Sonic’s sidekick. As for the human cast, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, and Jim Carrey return, joined by Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hits movie theaters April 8.

UAE summons people for sharing videos of missile attack interception

The UAE, the region’s commercial and tourism hub, rarely discusses its security in public but had confirmed the two Houthi attacks that took place a week apart, in the first assaults on the Gulf state.

“The Public Prosecution warned that such (video) clips endanger vital and military installations, and can impact the security and stability of society,” a statement on state news agency WAM said. It did not specify how many people were summoned or what the current status was of those summoned.

“The Public Prosecution will carry out its responsibilities in applying the law in all firmness towards these crimes and the perpetrators,” the statement said.

Monday’s strike, aimed at a base in Abu Dhabi hosting US forces, was thwarted by American-built Patriot interceptors, following an earlier deadly strike on a fuel depot.

Unverified footage that circulated on social media appeared to show moving lights from anti-projectile defenses being fired into the pre-dawn sky over the UAE capital that day.

The Public Prosecution said “deterrent legal measures” would be taken against those publishing such material in the UAE, which prides itself as a safe business haven and global tourist destination.

The Houthis are battling a Saudi-led military coalition that includes the UAE. A senior Emirati diplomat has said the UAE may upgrade its defensive capabilities following the assaults.
