NBA trade rumors: Warriors and Kings interested in Matisse Thybulle; Knicks a suitor for Pistons forward
The 2023 NBA trade deadline is now just over a week away on Thursday, Feb. 9, and as such the rumor mill is heating up. So far there hasn’t been much in the way of news about potential blockbusters, but there are plenty of role players available that could help contenders bolster their squads for the stretch run.
Here’s a look at the latest from around the league:
Matisse Thybulle’s defensive capabilities have never been in question; the 76ers wing made All-Defensive Second Team in 2021 and 2022, and finished fourth in the league in steals last season at 1.7 per game. Whether he can do enough on offense to stay on the floor and make his defense worthwhile, however, has always been up for debate.
While the Sixers tried to make it work in the past, they’ve been less interested in doing so this season. Thybulle is down to just 12.1 minutes per game, and has only made spot starts here and there. With an uncertain restricted free agency approaching this summer, the team could look to move him at the deadline.
If so, he will have suitors, including the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Warriors have been short on defensive-minded wings since losing Gary Payton II and Otto Porter Jr. in the summer, while the Kings could really use a defensive stopper as they make their playoff push.
Knicks looking at Bey
The New York Knicks’ roller coaster season is heading downhill again, as they’ve lost six of their last eight games to fall back to seventh place in the Eastern Conference at 27-25. They’re still just two games back of the Miami Heat for a top-six spot, however, and figure to be one of the more active teams at the deadline; it’s no secret they want to get back to the playoffs after missing out last season.
To that point, they are interested at Detroit Pistons wing Saddiq Bey, per SNY. The Pistons have had a disastrous season and currently sit in last place in the Eastern Conference at 13-39. Everyone assumes they will be sellers at the deadline, and teams have been making calls about a number of their players — most notably Bojan Bogdanovic.
Whether Bey will be on the move remains to be seen, but with just one year left on his contract after this season, perhaps there’s a deal to be had. It seems likely that the Knicks, or any other team, will really have to make it worth the Pistons’ while, however. Though Bey perhaps hasn’t improved as much as the team would have hoped since his rookie season, he’s still a big, physical wing who has made 37 percent on catch-and-shoot 3s this season, and rebuilding teams aren’t eager to let players like that go.

Anxious transfer portal week sees Texas Longhorns fend off suitor for superstar WR Xavier Worthy
The 72 hours prior to the effective closing of the NCAA’s transfer portal are tumultuous in college football circles. And while Pittsburgh All-American wide receiver Jordan Addison’s will-he-won’t-he flirtation with the portal dominates most of the conversation, nearly every school is dealing with the new realities of college football as we wait for the May 1 transfer portal deadline dust to settle.
No team better represents the new normal than the Texas Longhorns. Not only was Texas engaged in a heated recruiting battle for a top transfer target, but it was also attempting to protect its own roster from the tampering winds that are gusting across the sport.
The best place to start is TCU transfer Ochaun Mathis.
The No. 25 overall player in the 247Sports Transfer Rankings, Mathis was a top target for the Longhorns, who sorely need pass-rushing help off the edge. Mathis grew up right outside of Austin and had a strong connection at Texas in new special assistant to the head coach, Gary Patterson, his former coach at TCU. And while Mathis visited Austin four times and was considered a heavy Longhorn lean throughout the process, he ultimately chose Nebraska.
Multiple sources have indicated to 247Sports that Mathis’ decision to pick the Huskers had to do in large part because of a significant NIL deal Nebraska presented, which a source said was in the mid-six-figure range.
While that battle on the transfer recruiting trail was ongoing, the Longhorns were battling to keep their roster intact — outside of the expected roster purge that did occur.
Among the players targeted by others schools was True Freshman All-American wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who a source said had a significant six-figure offer from at least one Power Five school to enter the portal and attend their program.
That’s something the Longhorns managed to fend off, according to Horns247 senior writer Jeff Howe.
“He’s not leaving,” a source told Howe. “You can take that to the bank.”
A budding superstar who caught 62 passes for 981 yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman, Worthy would have been a massive loss for the Longhorns.
That’s not all. Sources say third-year defensive back Jahdae Barron, Texas’ projected starting nickelback, was also approached by a Power Five program with a significant deal to enter the portal. As of Monday evening, Barron’s name has not popped up in the transfer portal (Horns247’s Mike Roach has more here).
Three names, three different storylines. It’s just a glimpse into the bonanza that is college football right now as the transfer portal window, lightly regulated NIL policies and post-spring depth charts collide.
“It’s the new norm,” said one Power Five assistant coach.
Hawks an ’emerging suitor’ in potential Ben Simmons trade with 76ers, per report
The NBA trade deadline is just over a month away, and one major name to monitor is Ben Simmons. Simmons has yet to play in a game for the Philadelphia 76ers this season, as the team continues to scour the market for a suitable trade for the disgruntled All-Star.
One team to keep an eye on when it comes to a potential trade is the Atlanta Hawks, who have recently emerged as a suitor for Simmons, according to NBA reporter Marc Stein. But, while the Hawks may have interest in Simmons, their lack of a tradeable star-caliber player (outside of Trae Young, who the Hawks obviously aren’t interested in moving) makes a straight-up deal between them and the Sixers unlikely. Thus, if Simmons were to ultimately end up in Atlanta, it would likely be as part of a multi-team deal.

It was suggested to me this week by one league source to keep an eye on Atlanta as an emerging suitor for Philadelphia’s Simmons. The Hawks awoke Friday at a disappointing 17-20 (good for only 12th place in the East) and ranked 26th in defensive rating. They also just vaulted to the top of the Teams To Watch list at this trade deadline after general manager Travis Schlenk said in a radio interview earlier this week with 92.9 FM in Atlanta that he is openly questioning the wisdom of bringing back the same team after the Hawks’ Cinderella run to last season’s Eastern Conference finals. “It’s my responsibility to put a product on the floor that can win,” Schlenk said, “and right now I’m not sure I have done that.”
The Hawks don’t appear to have an available star on the Lillard/Beal level to make the sort of offer Philadelphia seeks for Simmons, but they have numerous enticing trade pieces to try to bring in other teams and expand the options in a theoretical multi-team trade construction. The prospect of a Trae Young/Simmons combination, given the defense Simmons could bring to Atlanta and the devastating playmaking duo he could form with Young, would certainly intrigue me.
So, the Hawks can be added to a list of teams intrigued by Simmons that already includes the Cleveland Cavaliers, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers and Minnesota Timberwolves, among others. Whether any of these teams will be able to come up with an offer enticing enough for Philadelphia to part with the former top overall pick remains to be seen.

Despite the fact that he has made it clear that he wants to continue his career elsewhere, the Sixers still hope to convince Simmons to play for the team this season, as they would rather keep him and play him than trade him. They also don’t want to settle for a return just to get a deal done, as such a move could compromise their long-term prospects. Again, from Stein:
Convincing Simmons to rejoin the team and play as much of the remaining schedule as possible, according to one source familiar with Philadelphia’s thinking, is the club’s “goal No. 1” when it comes to the wayward playmaker…
Yet it has likewise been evident for weeks, if not months, that the Sixers don’t subscribe to the notion that they are wasting a year of Joel Embiid’s prime if they hold off on a Simmons deal until the offseason. Philly’s fear is that it could do something much more damaging and squander the opportunity to acquire a true complementary star to Embiid if it rushes into a deal this season for the various headliners it could get immediately, like Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox or Cleveland’s Collin Sexton or the best package long-established interested teams such as Minnesota, Indiana or San Antonio could present.
Given all that has transpired between the two sides, it’s tough to imagine Simmons suiting up for the Sixers again, but crazier things have happened. Perhaps a deal will materialize over the next few weeks. If not, the drama in Philadelphia could stretch into the offseason.

Kansas City Southern Chooses Suitor in Bid for North American Rail Link
Kansas City Southern said on Sunday that it had deemed an offer from Canadian Pacific superior to a bid from Canadian National, in the latest turn in a monthslong battle to become the first railroad to connect North America.
Canadian Pacific first put forward a roughly $29 billion bid for Kansas City Southern in March, before being topped by a $33.7 billion offer from its rival, Canadian National, in April. But the Canadian National deal hit a key regulatory challenge this month, sending Kansas City back to talks with Canadian Pacific. The talks proved fruitful.
The crown jewel in the deal is Mexico, as the railroads look to capitalize on trade flows across North America on the heels of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement signed into law last year.
Closing a deal could take time. It must be approved by shareholders of both companies, as well as approved by Mexican authorities and the Surface Transportation Board, the U.S. regulatory board that oversees rail deals.
Kansas City Southern has notified Canadian National of its intention to terminate that deal, both companies said on Sunday. Canadian National has five days to make a better offer. If Kansas City opts for Canadian Pacific, Canadian National will receive $700 million in breakup fees, according to the terms of their deal.
Canadian National “is continuing to evaluate all options available to us,” said Jonathan Doorley, a spokesman for Canadian National. The company “will make carefully considered decisions in the interests of all C.N. shareholders and stakeholders and in line with our strategic priorities,” he said.
The Canadian Pacific deal is the sweetened offer that Canadian Pacific put forward in August, valuing Kansas City at about $31 billion. It would offer common shareholders of Kansas City Southern 2.884 in Canadian Pacific common shares and $90 in cash for each share they own of Kansas City. Canadian Pacific would assume $3.8 billion of outstanding Kansas City debt.
“We are pleased to reach this important milestone and again pursue this once-in-a-lifetime partnership,” said Keith Creel, the chief executive of Canadian Pacific.
Last month, the Surface Transportation Board ruled against the use of a voting trust by Canadian National and Kansas City. A voting trust is a common but controversial structure in such deals. The ruling was the first real test of guidelines put in place in 2001 to increase competition in deals that involve the largest railroads.
Canadian Pacific, which has a proposed voting trust that regulators have not blocked, successfully argued for its deal with Kansas City Southern to be evaluated outside those guidelines, given its smaller size.
“As we have said throughout this process, C.P. remains committed to everything this opportunity presents,” Mr. Creel said. “This merger proposal provides K.C.S. stockholders greater regulatory and value certainty. We are excited to move forward as we work toward making this perfect match a reality.”

Ahead of the season 7 premiere next week, ABC released an extended sneak peek teasing what’s to come on BiP after the season 17 finale of The Bachelorette on Monday.
The upcoming season promises to be “bigger, bolder and sexier” than ever as 23 Bachelor Nation favorites arrive on the beach in Mexico for another chance at love.
In the extended teaser, fans get a peek at some of the possible pairings on season 7, including: Tammy Ly and Riley Christian, Serena Pitt and Joe Amabile, Demi Burnett and Kenny Braasch, and Jessenia Cruz and Ivan Hall.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be Bachelor in Paradise without its fair share of drama.
Things are expected to heat up between Aaron Clancy and his season 17 Bachelorette castmate Thomas Jacobs, who is seen talking with Becca Kufrin. (PEOPLE exclusively revealed on Monday that the former Bachelorette is joining the cast — news that comes nearly a year after her split from ex Garrett Yrigoyen, to whom she got engaged on The Bachelorette.)
“I can’t stop smiling,” she says to Thomas during what appears to be a date.

Later, when the two men are seen meeting on the beach, Aaron demands, “I deserve some respect.”
“Don’t f—- with me,” Thomas replies to Aaron. In a confessional, Serena says that the men are “about to fight.”
The teaser also promises an emotional confrontation between Joe and his ex, Kendall Long — who split last year after meeting on Paradise in 2019.

When Kendall arrives, Joe has already begun spending time with Serena. The former couple sits down to clear the air, and Joe asks her: “Why did you come here?”
As tensions escalate between some of the contestants, Mari Pepin-Solis declares, “The heat is f—— on, that’s all I’ve gotta say.”
In the next clip, Mari throws a birthday cake into a bonfire on the beach before storming away with Demi.
The trailer ends with flashes of contestants shedding a few tears, as one says, “I wanna go home. That’s where I wanna go.”

Fans also get to hear from one of the season’s guest hosts, David Spade, who declares that season 7 could be “the most dramatic Bachelor in Paradise ever.”
Season 7 of Bachelor in Paradise will see Wells Adams return as bartender, while also serving as master of rose ceremonies. A rotating list of celebrities will fill in for former host Chris Harrison, including Spade, Lance Bass, Lil Jon and Tituss Burgess.
Season 7 of Bachelor in Paradise premieres Monday, Aug. 16 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
Rumored Deshaun Watson Suitor Clearing Cap Space For Texans Star
The Carolina Panthers have made a bunch of semi-minor transactions over the last couple days. And, wouldn’t you know it, this comes as they’re rumored to be a major suitor for Deshaun Watson.
On Friday, the Panthers cut three players — Tre Boston, Michael Palardy and Stephen Weatherly — to up their cap space to $28.5 million. Then on Saturday, they reportedly restructured the contract of Matt Paradis, which created more than $4 million in additional cap space.
And according to ESPN’s David Newton, the Panthers made the moves in an effort to clear cap space and dead money.
He then went on to report this: “The Panthers, per a source, plan to make a strong run at Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson if the Texans grant the former Clemson star his wish to be traded.”
Now, the Texans haven’t fully committed to trading Watson just yet, so this cap-clearing ultimately could prove to be, in a way, needless. However, if Houston decides one day it is willing to trade the franchise quarterback, the Panthers probably want to be prepared to make a move right away.
That said, the expectation is that Watson might not get moved for a little while as the Texans attempt to drive the price up.
